The Name is Bond, JIM Bond Fract007

In 1953, British author, Ian Fleming, first wrote a novel detailing the courageous acts of the suave and cool under pressed super spy, James Bond. Over the next decade, Fleming continued to entertain fans with the adventures of Bond and his battles against the supreme evil group known as SPECTRE before Bond was first brought to the big screen in 1962 (Or 1963 if you're a damn Yankee). Over the next five decades, the Bond film series racked up the hits, gained new fans, and become one of the most successful and popular movie franchises of all time. Known so well that people from around the world are familiar with Bond's catchphrases, his look, and has seen him parodied countless times. Much like another long running iconic British series, the fact that the character of Bond has a revolving door of actors portraying the role has allowed the series to remain fresh and relevant for nearly sixty years now.

With a combined gross of over 7 billion dollars at the box office, a number that will only grow further up with the release of the latest Bond film in 2020, a person would have to be living under a rock to have never seen a Bond film before. As it turns out, Wrestling Clique is home of two of those sad, sad souls that had never watched a Bond film before (Okay, so one of them watched one, but even that is pathetic). That changes in 2019.

Starting tomorrow and continuing every Wednesday until the end of the series, yours truly and Silk will be posting reviews of each of the movies in our own distinctive reviewing styles. We welcome you all to join along with the fun, re-watch the movies (Because clearly the rest of you guys aren't so lame to have never watched Bond before), and to share your thoughts on the movies. After initially trying to convince Silk to allow us to have an "Out" after each actor is finished playing James Bond and essentially being told by her to "Stop being a pussy and just watch the full series" the idea is to watch one film per week until the end of the franchise. So with 20+ films, this will be a long running thread, but hopefully a thread that maintains interest for a lengthy portion of 2019. Will Jim and Silk end up becoming major Bond fans and regretting that we took so long to watch the series or will we realize that we had made the right call refusing to watch the franchise for years? Who knows, maybe we'll be disagreeing at every turn until one of us has to kill off the other~!

So join us tomorrow as we take a look at the first time that Bond, James Bond, appeared on the big screen with Ian Fleming's Dr. No!

For reference sake, I've seen Casino Royale in its entirety and bits and pieces of the other films on TV over the years, but I'm still very much a scrub to the series at large. We're gonna have some fun y'all.

In 2018 I was going to go through all the James Bond films before Daniel Craig came into the picture. I finished at Goldfinger which was amazing glad to see this happening to make my ass go back into the films. I guess I might need to watch Thunderball next to prepare instead of Only the Strong I had planned to watch 12 Midnight.

I'm looking forward to this. Whilst I never watched the entire series myself (Only the recent ones and a few of the oldies), I enjoy seeing people's perspective on the films. Learning new tidbits and backstage info on the series and the individual films. Might watch them all myself

I could probably give you The World is not Enough if I don't have to sit through the opening sequence and Bond's all-time terrible "DON'T BLOW US UP" line but that's a big ask for me. Tomorrow Never Dies and Die Another Day are arguably the two worst Bond films, though I suppose you could also lump The Man with the Golden Gun (mainly because of that terrible Elephant story), A View to a Kill, Quantum of Solace and Spectre into that group.

Personally, I kind of dig A View to a Kill despite its flaws. Walken is solid as the villain, Grace Jones has a nice (and sexy, yes I said it) turn as May Day and the fire truck chase scene is so ridiculous it actually works as a self-parody of James Bond style car chases.

This actually annoys me. When Fracto and I first began talking about possibly doing this thread in late 2018, most of the series was on Amazon Prime and it seemed like it'd be easy to watch them. Then when we finalized the decision to do this thread and I sat down to watch the first movie in 2019 and I discovered they were all gone. FML

FFS. We should have went to you for thread ideas. This thread idea is pretty much a combination of both of our ideas. On my own, I came up with "The Name is Bond, JIM Bond" and on her own, Fracto came up with Fract007 and that Jim Bond should be incorporated somehow.

If you keep up with your weekly schedule we'll be able to discuss it after April 10th.

They've done that over the last couple of years. They seem to all pop up around November and then disappear in January. I guess they only have a limited window for the rights. It's the same with Hulu, which seems to have them all whenever Amazon Prime does. Luckily I have the Blu Ray set but I can see how it would be really annoying.

Me too maybe my favorite outta the three I watched so far from the old era of Bond films. I want to see what they say about Pussy Galore and act so proper about it. You know I'm going to be a little naughty with that one.

Yeah? Well your face is an even worse thread title!

Also, what's the deal on the unofficial Bond films? Which ones are they, why are they unofficial, and should they be covered?

The unnoficial Bond movies are Casino Royale (1954), Casino Royale (1967) and Never Say Never Again. The first Casino Royale is actually just a short television episode. It's worth checking out but doesn't have to be covered. The second one is bizarre and should be avoided unless you're really into seeing a spoof of the Bond films before Austin Powers did it better.

Never Say Never Again is a remake of Thunderball and is alright but not nearly as good as the original. There's an entire sordid story behind why the remake was made but I'll get into that more when you guys review Thunderball in a month. I'd probably cover it although now that I think about it I never reviewed it myself back in 2011 when I was doing the Bond films so maybe it's not that big of a deal.

Unofficial ones are the original Casino Royale TV adaptation from 1954, the parody Casino Royale from 1967 and the Thunderball remake from 1983 Never Say Never Again.

They're unofficial because Eon productions didn't make them. The two Casino Royales got made because Fleming sold the rights to that book before he made the deal for the rest of them to Saltzman years later and they couldn't get the rights back for 40 years.

NSNA got made because Fleming wrote what became the novel Thunderball with Kevin McClory and Jack Whittingham as a screenplay that didn't go anywhere and he just published it as a book without crediting them which resulted in a lawsuit that seemingly didn't end until McClory died in the mid 00s. As a result of the lawsuit McClory owned the Thunderball story, SPECTRE and Blofeld and was allowed to produce his own version of it.

I can't say whether or not you should watch the two Casino Royales as I've never seen them but if you consider a legit Bond movie one where Connery plays Bond then I'd say go for NSNA. It's not as bad as some official ones.
