    Asuka

My number 1 US based female as it stands.

Asuka is head and shoulders above the rest of the women in WWE. For starters she's always been great. Charlotte, Becky, Sasha, Bayley, all of them have long stretches where they're pretty unremarkable or outright bad. Asuka to me doesn't. Her 2018 was a bit naff through no fault of her own and even in glimpses like the Survivor Series elimination match she showed how awesome she is.

Her biggest merit above all the other WWE women is her NXT run. She carried the NXT women's division when it could have fallen to bits after losing their four big names and four best wrestlers. But every Takeover she'd have another great match no matter who she was with. Nia Jax, Emma, Ember Moon, The Iiconincs, Dan Brooke. You could put her with anyone and it would be good. Her match with Ember Moon stands out to me as one of the best women's matches of the last five years. I loved her series with Bayley too, and the Charlotte matches from this year speak for themselves.

I think that her biggest asset is her in-ring personality and the way she presents herself. When you watch her, you believe that she is going to destroy the poor woman that has to step in the ring with her. If you want her to go out and have a hardcore match, she could do it (e.g. Nikki Cross, TLC 2018). If you want her to squash someone, it'll be an incredible entertaining squash match. If you want her to heel it up and generate sympathy for your babyface, she can do it (Ember, Bayley). If you want her to be a babyface working from underneath, she can do it (Nia Jax). If you want her to have an epic match against an equal, she can do it (Charlotte). I don't think there's another woman on the roster that is as well rounded as a performer as she is, and it'll be interesting to see how people view her in the wider scope of women's wrestling, and also against the men as well.

    Re: Asuka

I'm an Asuka fan, thought she was decent as far back in Japan as KANA, though definitely no super-worker. But like Lynch I think she's benefited greatly from booking decisions which have built her popularity. Does Asuka get a rep as a top wrestler without her long undefeated streak on a show which values womens wrestling? I liked her matches with Jax, Charlotte and especially Moon (probably the best woman who'll receive no buys) but I think she'll need a couple big hits next year for me to consider her.

    Re: Asuka

She's my working #1 female, because unlike a lot of the women, with the peaks of great Takeover and PPV matches, there's also entertaining TV matches like that crazy run of performances she put in on Raw at the start of the year. Women like Charlotte can't touch Asuka for TV work. They tapped into it way too much this year, but Asuka is actually pretty good at not being serious, almost comedy like in her matches like we saw when she tagged with the Miz. For someone who can't speak english very well, she knows how to get crowds into what she's doing in the ring and has adapted to WWE main roster way better than any NXT callup in the last 2 years. Now that comes at a price of losing the NXT version of Asuka, but you can't keep that going forever with an undefeated streak aura and Vince booking your shit and maybe they'll strike a good balance in 2019 when she's not so lighthearted and hip-shaking.

I don’t know why I haven’t even thought of Asuka yet.

Before WWE got her back into the Title hunt, which led her to winning the Smackdown's Women Title she did have a period after the loss to Charlotte from Mania where I felt she was being mishandled very poorly. It just felt like she was there on the Roster, and thank goodness she got back some momentum and turned it into a Title reign for her. Before the Main Roster being NXT and her as Kana in Japan from the work I've seen her easily one of the greatest talents Male or Female ever to lace them up. GIVE ME CLOWN ASUKA DAMMIT!

    Re: Asuka

Here's my issue; I didn't watch NXT. I'm looking at Asuka from a pure Main Roster standpoint. When she came in, the hype was unreal. I'd never seen her wrestler but I was hyped for it. I wanted to see this woman wrestle. I wanted to see Asuka. I wanted to watch what she can do. She was undefeated, I loved it. She won the Rumble, that was perfect. She was going to win at Mania and prove that the hype is real and that she is the bes- Oh. Wait.

Yes, harsh I know but her loss at Mania was literally WWE sticking a sharp pin into a balloon. All the air faded away and until very recently, she hasn't done anything. She hasn't been at the forefront of anything, and even now - she's, in my eyes anyway, the "fourth piece" of a feud that's really about Rousey, Charlotte and Lynch. She's been an afterthought since Mania. She was the afterthought until TLC - and even right at this moment, I'm more invested in what's happening with Charlotte and Becky than I am her.

Not an assessment on her in ring ability, nor am I arguing with what she did on NXT - I just haven't seen anything recently. If she has an outstanding 2019, then that will be her only chance of making my list.

She would have a better chance of making your list if you watched some of her highly rated NXT matches. Can't imagine anything is coming in 2019 that's as impressive as her title run.

If you had to put together a 'Asuka for Beginners' guide, what matches would you recommend?

Pretty much all of her takeover matches.

    Or NXT title matches rather.

This is probably her best match on the main roster:

Definitely my number 1 women's wrestler. Just an absolute bad ass who has remained over despite some horrific booking. Here's hoping 2019 is a return to form.

    Re: Asuka

I'm a fan of the talent but not really a fan of the role she's played. I was into the streak big for a long time, but by the end it was becoming a glare on all her matches, and although the match was legit great, her losing at WM was almost a deathknell for her 2018 until the very end to where she was more or less a comedy character. However, she's so charismatic that she was completely effective in that role and avoided the crowd turning on her despite many booking blunders and without even a dumb heel turn to "freshen her up". I think in terms of her actual skillset she has to be among the best in the company of either gender and I love her blend of technique and striking although she doesn't use it as much anymore, again focusing more on her hip attacks and the like. That said, she has a special kind of fire that seems to have made her bulletproof and even if she isn't your favorite, you have to respect that. When she's gotten chances she's always delivered from NXT to the main roster as we know.

Also that Nikki Cross match might be my favorite match of hers in the WWE, even above WM and the TLC match. Just a phenomenal performance and perfect use of a plunder match that also got both women super over for a time. I loved that one the most but they're all at least good.

    Re: Asuka

Six months of nothing since the Becky Rumble match with no sign of change on the horizon is hurting her placing. She may now not finish up as my top womens wrestler of the last 5 years.
