    Re: Joker (2019)

This film was absolutely fantastic. The way it portrays Joker was not what I expected, never did I think that Ledger could have some competition but this was an excellent portrayal from Phoenix. Comparing the two, to me, is difficult. Ledger was a great comic book villain come to life on the big screen, Phoenix however, whilst playing the role of a comic book character, did not strike me as that at all. This was very real, the themes explored were so relevant to some aspects of today's culture of mental health. I adored the score and the scenes with Phoenix dancing, especially on the steps, was simply beautiful. The scene where he's on the talk show was incredibly tense and the payoff, holy shit they payoff. Cracking film, the flack it has got from some I think is unwarranted. When I was leaving the cinema I overheard a few people say "well that was absolute dog shit" but I think they maybe missed the point.

What I love most about this film is that it doesn't feel like another DC/MARVEL shitfest that Hollywood has become so oversaturated with that whenever I see a new superhero film come out I roll my eyes and pray for the day when it stops (it won't, I know, Disney makes too much money to stop it)

Go see it, Phoenix has made the role his own. Don't go into it with the perception of "well nothing will top Ledger" just go in and enjoy it.

I watched this over the weekend and I thought it was excellent, and Joaquin Phoenix was phenomenal in his portrayal of the character. Those that didn’t enjoy this, that’s their prerogative but they might be missing the point of it and go into it expecting your typical comic book film adaptation when it’s not that at all.

Top contender for film of the year for me, I want to watch it again.

I'm not doubting anybodies reviews of this movie, but do we really need another Joker? This is the third different Joker on the big screen in little more than a decade. Why can't anyone create new characters? Or is the better question why can't fans get behind new characters?

    1. Yes, more financing towards original stories and characters would be great.
    2. This take on The Joker is so different from the others that it's almost impossible to consider this as part of an oversaturation of the character. It's more of a story of a mentally ill assassin who unintentionally sparks a violent political revolution in his image. Considering its relevance to real life and the amount of people re-evaluating their approach to mental illness these days who relate in some way to Arthur, this film did have a story worth telling.

The top 10 highest grossing movies this year (in the US) are all based on existing properties except Us (I'll give John Wick the benefit of the doubt too since the original was made in 2014). People get mad about a lack of original stories, a saturation of superhero movies, but there aren't enough people going out of their way to watch and support "original stories and characters" to justify these complaints. The product will be there if there's an audience for it. There doesn't seem to be enough of one though.

I'd argue that audience is on places like Netflix and Amazon now.

You're right! I misspoke. There's a lot of good original stuff on there (even if they tend to not go the distance for whatever reason). So I guess we can all stop complaining about a lack of original stories & too much franchise movies because there's plenty of both and you dont have to watch what you dont wanna watch and you dont have to shit on things that dont interest you.

Damn! Ya'll have got me even more excited to watch this film! :D I might try and do it this weekend. I'm intrigued.

I was hearing a lot of mixed reviews at first, but not it seems that the majority of people really enjoyed it so that's cool.

Saw this earlier. Fantastic film. Pheonix as the Joker was tremendous. Totally enthralling, can't take your eyes performance. The rest of the film delivers from story, message, how to made you feel, etc.

    Re: Joker (2019)

Just got back from seeing it.

Great film, would be happy to see more comic book material adapted in this way than another big blockbuster. Loved the political and social aspects of it.

As far as dividing opinions, my mate's thoughts were different from mine (not bad, just good) so it's definitely a very marmite film. Not sure where the complaints about the level of violence have come from, seemed no more violent than other movies I've seen.
