    Re: Joker Origin Movie (2019)

Although I'm sure there's gonna be next to no Batman in this, I'm guessing that part of this is that the news story is about the Waynes' murder. Arthur, growing more insane, takes pity on young Bruce and thinks it's a good idea to show up at the gates of Wayne Manor in his clown costume to cheer him up - inevitably it turns awkward and terrifying, leading to that moment where he forces that smile on him.

Fucking great it's hard to say off one Trailer, but I'm going to love Phoenix performance as the Joker. Off the Wall crazy, while being charming let's all time skip to October!

Just watched this again with a buddy and he commented that his favourite part was that Joker is wearing the classic Romero suit. I’m sure it’s a minor detail to most, but I love it as well. I only wish he had a moustache under the face paint for full attention to detail.

I agree with that love for that shot and the Trailer sells so perfectly because the slow motion tells me this is Joker in all his glory. Another shot that I'm like woah is when you see the shot of his back and Phoenix is skinny as hell for this role compared to what he looked like before, and you see him what it looks to be tying making some laces on a Shoe. He does it so hard and loud like he's barely keeping in sanity.

I was already sold before, but this Trailer fully makes me confident that this Movie is going to be fucking great. No more Mr.Nice Guy!

Joaquin Phoenix's Laugh gave me chills it's perfection. I have a prediction that the Talk Show with De Niro is the place he kills his Character getting even after the disrespect he showed him earlier in the film.

Luckily, a client of mine has an extra ticket to a screening of this at TIFF on September 13th, which means I'll be seeing it a couple of weeks before its major release. Pretty stoked about that.

    Re: Joker (2019)

So, I saw this last night and to say it delivered would be a ridiculous understatement. It's pretty much the antithesis of every "comic book" movie that's come before it, playing a lot more closely to a thriller/drama than anything else. It's quite clearly inspired by the works of Martin Scorsese and Paul Schraeder (Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, The King of Comedy, Blue Collar, Hardcore, Light Sleeper to name a few) while still creating its own unique identity.

Phoenix was obviously excellent and should get an Oscar nomination, though winning will be tough given the subject matter. All of the other actors and actresses were superb as well, with particular mention going to Robert De Niro (mainly for not playing himself for a change), Zazie Beetz, and Brett Cullen, who gives perhaps the most interesting take we'll ever see on Thomas Wayne.

I can't really say more without spoilers, but I highly recommend checking it out when it hits wide release. Just be prepared, because I have a feeling it's going to be a movie that sticks with you for awhile after seeing it.

Ah, I'm so jealous Fuji, this is the most I've looked forward to a film since The Force Awakens. Glad it's got the Fuji seal of approval though!

    Re: Joker (2019)

I know it's a Phoenix tour de force, but I also think it's the film where Todd Phillips is looked at as a real director and not just a guy that does toilet humor-esque movies. This is a huge jump for him. War Dogs was a small jump, but this is a big serious comes into his own type of film, imo.

Film of the year, maybe film of the decade. Phoenix with maybe the performance of his career (and that's saying something).

    Re: Joker (2019)

Went to see this tonight. Definitely lived up to the hype for me. Overheard a few slightly younger people talking on the way out that weren’t as impressed. Think they expected something different for some reason. Fuck them, I loved it. I’d expand a little, but I’d be worried about accidentally spoiling stuff.

    Just go see this film!

    Re: Joker (2019)

I’m glad the community here has so far been receptive, as it is a great film. Wolf’s point about spoilers is well taken and I just wanted to address that by saying it would be great if we could stay spoiler free until this coming Monday/Tuesday. After that point, I’ll be more than happy to discuss all of the great subtleties of this film.

    Re: Joker (2019)

Went to watch this last night and all I can say is; wow. Fantastic film. So raw, dark, deep and real. Joaquin Phoenix deserves a best actor Oscar nomination for his performance for sure and he should absolutely be in contention to win it too. Extremely compelling performance by him. A similar Joker along the same lines as the Ledger portrayal, but turned up 100. This movie could easily be a prequel to the Nolan trilogy however.

I can see why opinions have been divided among critics, as the portrayal of mental health illness and violence is very raw. However, I think that adds to the realness of this movie and makes it more grounded in a world of extraordinary movies in the superhero genre, which is where this movie falls in.

Although bit strictly a Batman film, this is set in the Batman universe and its one of the best movies in the Batman series for sure. Right up there with the Nolan trilogy.
