No real big surprises to be honest with you. Looking forward to the tournament though as I think some people have a chance to step up and shine. I think Ibushi has a great chance this year and I wonder if Shibata was healthy then who would be cut for him?

Need to think about some block predictions.

Decent amount of names, surprised that Jeff Cobb is not in the G1 with him being on the tour but oh well. Wonder what the blocks will be. Hope White and Okada are in the same block, that would do wonders for that story line that is going on in CHAOS at the moment. Glad Ibushi got unbanned fro Budokan so he can be in the G1, it wouldn't have felt the same without him. Will be interesting to see who makes the finals. I can Okada vs Naito for the finals with it being Budokan Hall but we will see.

What an underwhelming line up. Obviously the tournament will still produce the goods but this doesn’t get me excited.

Still don’t see the big fuss with Hangman.

    Re: G1 Climax 28

I would say 18 of these were pretty much locks, then they had Page (sadly expected but is worthless in-ring) & Tonga which they kinda teased with Ishimori putting him over in his promo but really he doesn't deserve it especially over Finlay which was a real headscratching non-inclusion. Tonga would be bumped if Honma returned a month sooner, no question.

Shibata return on G1 Final Day to announce his Dome match, said it all along.

Probably the worst lineup on paper since '05 but there's still gonna be some great matches here so it's still pretty great 9 Ishii matches? Yes please.

Good lord will they fuck off with sticking Tama into this thing. He’s a tag wrestler, and he never has good matches in the past 2 G1s he’s been apart of.

i don’t think anyone else has mentioned it, but no Taichi is very strange considering they only turned him heavyweight this year and just challenged for the NEVER title.

tama, Page, Fale, yano And makabe is gonna make for every show having a couple of uninspiring matches any way these blocks fall.

Taichi's heavyweight run totally bombed. I don't know what they were expecting but this says he didn't even clear that bar. Can't say I'll miss him but I won't lie, he'd be better than Page & more than Tonga.

I actually didn’t think Tama’s run last year was completely bad, but he’s super unnecessary.

    Re: G1 Climax 28

Tonga was not bad, just completely uninspiring. I thought he had one legit good match vs. Omega and a bunch of solid ones and two bad ones vs. Suzuki & Yano. Had him 16th overall in my PTR ranking last year so pretty uninspiring. I just think that spot could have gone to someone to add some fresh matchups and Finlay blows him out of the water. Even Tonga's brother would at least give us new matches. Not a fan.

    Out: Nagata/Kojima
    In: Switchblade/Hangman

Yeah looking at the lineup it doesn't make me throw up Pomp Pomps in the air because it's either going to be Okada, Ibushi or Naito to face Omega for the IWGP World Title. It would be great to see Ibushi win it to see if NJPW would go with the Omega/Ibushi long road back to friendship now enemies storyline, or save it for down the road. Ibushi is the only guy without a title in the Golden Elite and the IC title would look lovely around his waist if they didn't have win it.

Given I'm not a huge fan of either Switchblade or Sanada, and Big Mike's skeletons in the closet being revealed have made me never want to watch his matches again, I'm close to having half the field be wrestlers I'm not excited to see wrestle which is bad news for a G1.

    Re: G1 Climax 28

Could do without Page, Switchblade and Makabe tbh. YOSHI-HASHI too. Interested in everyone else though tbh. I'm not too fussed at no real surprises. Page probably the alternative to Cody.

    Block Predictions:

    Block A:

    Kenny Omega
    Tetsuya Naito
    Hiroshi Tanahashi
    Minoru Suzuki
    Hangman Page
    Tama Tonga
    Hirooki Goto
    Toru Yano
    Togi Makabe
    Juice Robinson

    Block B:

    Kazuchika Okada
    Jay White
    Kota Ibushi
    Michael Elgin
    SANADA
    EVIL
    Tomohiro Ishii
    YOSHI-HASHI
    Bad Luck Fale
    Zack Sabre Jr

Really hard to predict. Not sure if they'll go with SANADA/EVIL or 3 BC members in one place but who knows. Suppose Ishii and Goto are swappable. Okada or Ibushi to win. Struggling to figure out who would beat Omega for KOPW match using my blocks though. Unless it's Naito but pointless for him to make finals if so.

    Re: G1 Climax 28

    The Blocks were announced today.

    G1 Climax 28 entrants

    A Block:

Hiroshi Tanahashi (17 time entrant, 17th consecutive entry)

Togi Makabe (15 time entrant, 15th consecutive entry)

Michael Elgin (4 time entrant, 4th consecutive entry)

Kazuchika Okada (7 time entrant, 7th consecutive entry)

    Jay White (G1 Debut)

    YOSHI-HASHI (3 time entrant, 3rd consecutive entry)

Bad Luck Fale (5 time entrant, 5th consecutive entry)

    Hangman Page (G1 Debut)

EVIL (3 time entrant, 3rd consecutive entry)

Minoru Suzuki (8 time entrant, 2nd consecutive entry)

    B Block:

Juice Robinson (2 time entrant, 2nd consecutive entry)

Hirooki Goto (11 time entrant, 11th consecutive entry)

Tomohiro Ishii (6 time entrant, 6th consecutive entry)

Toru Yano (13 time entrant, 12th consecutive entry)

Kenny Omega (3 time entrant, 3rd consecutive entry)

Kota Ibushi (4 time entrant, 2nd consecutive entry)

Tama Tonga (3 time entrant, 3rd consecutive entry)

Tetsuya Naito (9 time entrant, 9th consecutive entry)

SANADA (3 time entrant, 3rd consecutive entry)

Zack Sabre Jr. (2 time entrant, 2nd consecutive entry)

    -

With Omega in Naito's Block Okada is a heavy favorite. I think also Omega and Ibushi in the same Block could mean Omega is a viable candidate. (Ibushi beats/draws Omega, Omega wins G1 and picks Ibushi as his challenger. Ibushi gets the title shot without actually winning G1 and gets around the contract. Still though no matter, I think Naito beats Kenny and wins the title at KOPW, and takes it to the Dome for a rematch of last year against Okada.

Great B Block. A Block is okay too l, there are a few promising matches like Okada/Tanahashi, Okada/Suzuki, Okada/Elgin, Suzuki/Tanahashi so it's not too bad. Okada vs White is interesting because of the White character and the way they portrayed it.

think Naito beats Kenny and wins the title at KOPW, and takes it to the Dome for a rematch of last year against Okada
This is what I think will happen too. As soon as Okada beat Naito, this was the first thing on my mind. That way we still get Omega vs Ibushi at WK, just not for the title.

I'm greatly looking forward to this year's G1, and will be trying to watch as many of the shows live as I can. It's the most obvious answer but the one I'm going for nonetheless, and I'm picking Okada to win the G1. I do see Naito beating Kenny, but I don't see him winning the IWGP title when he gets his title shot; Gedo usually doesn't go for short IWGP title reigns, and I especially don’t see him doing giving Omega a four-month reign off of such a widely lauded match. I see Omega keeping the IWGP title until WK, where he’ll face Okada, and that’s where I think Gedo will pull the swerve and have Omega beat Okada again.

    Re: G1 Climax 28

As far as personal tastes go Block A is a horror show for me. A lot of it is the same old faces where the big matches in the group are ones we've seen before, Tanahashi/Okada, Okada/Suzuki, Suzuki/Tanahashi, EVIL/Okada, Elgin/Okada, Fale/Tanahashi, Fale/Okada. A lot of matches for the debuting Page do nothing for me. The only hook in this block is seeing how Switchblade gets on, and with him facing Okada first you know he's picking up a huge win straight off the bat to make him a contender on the final day. Switchblade Vs Okada, Tanahashi and Suzuki is this guy's ultimate test, he needs to really impress.

Block B is very good, Ishii, ZSJ, Ibushi, Naito and Omega are all capable of great matches, Juice and Goto peak this time of year and will be good, and who knows maybe Sanada will have the odd good match, he has the right opponents for it, Naito/Sanada sure sounds tasty. I think the only thing Block B is missing is a fresh name, I'd of personally swapped Hangman with Tama.......well actually I'd of swapped Tama with Finlay. Ibushi Vs Omega is the big draw here and I'm pretty stunned the first time they are running this is in a G1 block finals night that was always going to shift tickets. Zack Vs Omega is fresh as fuck.

What I think is great is that the final is really tough to predict. Block A could be won by literally any of Evil, Switchblade, Okada or Tanahashi based on the final nights matches, while Omega, Ibushi, ZSJ or Naito could win Block B. I'm with Zero in thinking that Naito/Okada is going to be the WK14 main event as it's one of the only big matches protected this year, so one of those men will be the winner of the G1, but they could face any one of the people I just mentioned from the opposite block. Okada Vs Ibushi or Sabre Jr OR Naito Vs Switchblade, Tanahashi or EVIL feel most likely in my mind.

Funny thing, Ego. You're wrong about Gedo not doing short title reigns. Besides Okada who needs the title because he isn't talented enough to stand out on his own, Pretty much all of them have been extremely brief. AJ: 1 Defense - Tana: 1 Defense - Naito 1 Defense title reigns have happened in between Okada's dominance.

How is Naito a top tier worker and Juice/Goto aren't? They've had way better years than he has, Juice arguably has the deepest resume counting the Finlay tags, Naito/Suzuki is arguably the worst main event in years in NJP. Naito/SANADA is at least well built tho.

I think people are really overcomplicating things by throwing these wild card candidates out. Like ZSJ? He has less main events on this tour than YOSHI-HASHI AND has lost to Okada already AND Naito will assuredly get his win back from NJC. There's a 0% chance he makes the final. My scenario is final day: Tana/Okada/Jay(Possibly Suzuki but he's too useful to put over others during the tournament IMO) & Kenny/Ibushi/Naito/Goto are all alive.

EVIL beats Jay - Okada beats Tanahashi
Juice beats Goto - Naito beats ZSJ - Ibushi beats Omega (or draws but earlier in the tour Naito beats Omega and Ibushi beats Naito so Ibushi advances)

Okada beats Ibushi in the final.

Easy. Naito potentially on his day can hit higher highs than Goto and Juice. I've no doubt Goto and Juice will be more consistent and Naito will hit lower lows, but I'm not sure they will wow me. I don't remember a single G1 match Goto had last year, and Juice was good but I don't know if any of his matches cracked my top 100. Naito Vs Ibushi, Tanahashi and Omega sure did.

Besides, I never said 'top tier', re-read my post, I said 'capable of great matches'.......how's that controversial? surely you don't think Naito is incapable of having a great match on his day.

Agree though not sure on Omega beating Okada at WK. I think Okada wins and Ibushi wins NJ Cup and loses future title shot leading to Omega vs Ibushi at next WK. slow burn and all. Okada wins IWGP belt back at WK. so Omega vs Ibushi is non title (like it needs a belt to sellthematch)

    Okada winning I agree on.

Naito is a top tier worker because he actually makes people give a fuck about him unlike one Aramusha stereotypical LONE SAMURAI Jap weeb gimmick Hirooki Goto. If you think Goto is a better worker than Naito then soz. Goto ocant' make anyone care about him other than the nerds who ar ein love wiht the fallen/lone samurai gimmick that really fails to hit home wiht any sort of fanbase other than weeb fantasticos. Nobody in Japan gives a fuck about this samurai bullshit because its overdone and, quite frankly, does not inspire anyone.
