Re: WC's Fave Five Best Picture Winners~!

I considered American Beauty but like Fuji said it hasn't aged well, Deer Hunter I just watched for the first time and while I really enjoyed it and think it's a great movie, it's a little too slow moving for me to consider it a favorite. Unforgiven would have been on my list because I remember really enjoying the movie but I just can't remember a damn thing from it. Put me in the Titanic dislike group, a friend put it best that it was better when movies were on VHS because with Titanic you could just about just throw away the first VHS and watch the second and it's a bit of a better movie.

Re: WC's Fave Five Best Picture Winners~!

    Alright, top ten time folks...

    10T. Braveheart - 80 Points (Tig #1, Wang Chung #4, Dook Gulak #5)

    10T. Platoon - 80 Points (MitchMiser #1, Tig #3)

    10T. Rain Man - 80 Points (Ed #1, MitchMiser #4, Jimmy King #5)

    9. Spotlight - 110 Points (Panther #2, Professor Booty #2, Postman Dave #3)

Braveheart and Platoon are two that were considered for my list as both are great films and well worth their wins for Best Picture. I ultimately had to leave them off but I'm glad they both got enough love to crack the top ten. Rain Man has never been a personal fave but it's still a solid movie with a top notch performance from Hoffman. I do think Mississippi Burning was the better film of the nominees for that year but not by a wide enough margin to be a snub. Spotlight is another movie that I really wouldn't consider a fave if only because I can't imagine ever watching it again but it was still very good. I thought The Big Short was better but there was no way it was winning because it had too much humour so I was fine with Spotlight taking home the big prize.

Next up, just three more before we reach the Fave Five~!

Braveheart was one of those films that just made you want to stand up and join William Wallace until you see the truck in the background.

I preferred The Big Short too personally, but Spotlight is still great.

    Again, not seen the others.

A lot of these are good, solid films to me but nothing spectacular. I haven't watched Braveheart or Platoon in years so would arguably need to re-watch. I enjoyed Spotlight but like Fuji said, would have little desire to ever re-watch it.

Rain Man was one I considered for my list but just didn't think it warranted top 5 status.

    And he scores goals...!

I love Spotlight (Deer a Hunter too) but if I voted for either it would be more recency bias than anything

Spotlight gets better every time I watch it. Went from liking it on first watch to absolutely loving it now one. One of my fave movies of the last few years.

Re: WC's Fave Five Best Picture Winners~!

Ok, here we go, final three before the Fave Five begins...

    8. Forrest Gump - 140 Points (Jimmy King #1, Postman Dave #1, Dook Gulak #2)

    7. The Departed - 160 Points (Panther #1, Professor Booty #1, Jimmy King #2, Ed #4)

    6. Schindler's List - 170 Points (Necro #1, The Natural #3, Wang Chung #3, Dook Gulak #4, Panther #4, v4yne #4)

Unlike the last couple of updates we have two nominees that I'm not a big fan of here. Forrest Gump, while inherently a decent enough film, is just way too melodramatic to be taken seriously. On the positive side, it does have a killer soundtrack and strong performances from the entire cast. It's also a fairly original idea, something that cannot be said of The Departed. I get that most people who love it have never seen the movie it's based on and I've honestly given up trying to convince people that a foreign film is better than a lavish Hollywood remake but that doesn't change the fact that it is. I will never understand how Scorsese messed up that falling scene but hey, at least he won Best Director for what is quite possibly the worst movie he's ever made.

Schindler's List is another one of those movies that I'd consider great but hardly something I'd call a favourite. The subject matter is just way too bleak to be something I'd want to revisit but I won't deny its power or that it was easily the best film of its year.

Next up, the Fave Five begins with the 1970's~!

I had a Jewish owner of a grocery store by where I grew up buy my whole senior class alojg with many other highschools movie tickets to go see this when it came out. I had about 450 kids in my senior class so that was not a chep move. I love history things like this and the subject matrer is very gruesome i get that but it was a powerful movie that showed alot of truths.

I will forever defend Forrest Gump. Terrific storytelling and great accompanying elements.

I like The Departed less and less I feel like.

Re: WC's Fave Five Best Picture Winners~!

Flaws and all I love The Departed but after seeing Infernal Affairs and what they could've done it dropped a bit for me. They shouldn't have given away Queenan's death in a dumb ass slow mo shot. It should've just been Queenan landing right in front of Costigan OUT OF NOWHERE and though I enjoy Marky more in this than almost anything he's ever done, Dignam only exists so that Sullivan can get caught otherwise Costigan doesn't need to make the rooftop play. In IA he has to because Queenan/Wong is the only one that knew he was a cop. Sure, Dignam's suspended but would it really be that hard to find out where he lives and give him the tapes that prove Sullivan's the rat without alerting him? Were it not for those problems it would have easily made the list.

Schindler is great but not something I'd consider a favorite.

Gump's not a bad movie I just don't like it.

Re: WC's Fave Five Best Picture Winners~!

    The time has come....

    5. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - 230 Points (Lucha Bear #2, TCON #2, Dook Gulak #3, Ed #3, PS #3, Thundercat #3, Tig #4, Fuji Vice #5)

    4. Rocky - 250 Points (TCON #1, Tig #2, Wang Chung #2, Jimmy King #3, Panther #3, Lucha Bear #4, Postman Dave #4, Necro #5, Professor Booty #5)

Two heavy hitters start us off and while I knew Rocky was going to get a lot of love I'm pleasantly surprised that Cuckoo's Nest made the Fave Five. I've always been a big fan of the film as it's just expertly crafted, brilliantly acted and has quite a lot to say in a time where movies dealing with this sort of stuff were not prevalent. Really stoked so many other awesome people here love it too. I debated voting for Rocky but the truth is I've always been a bigger fan of the second movie. That's not a knock on the original mind you, I just really enjoy Stallone chasing the chicken around.

Next up, number three beat out Rocky by just 10 points~!

Rocky is timeless though and without it you wouldnt have him chasing the chicken in the second movie and the fact he wrote the script in like 3 days is huge considering how good it is.

Oh I know it's a classic and definitely the better film, I just prefer the sequel as far as favourites go. On that subject, let's take advantage of this great segue opportunity and look at number three...

    3. The Godfather Part II - 260 Points (PS #1, v4yne #1, Fuji Vice #2, Creeping Death #3, MitchMiser #3, Necro #3, Professor Booty #3)

I'm not sure if I can comfortably say The Godfather Part II is better than The Godfather but, of the the two, it's the one I tend to gravitate towards more often. I love the dual story, the incredible acting from the supporting cast and the amazing quotability. As far as sequels go, I think it's safe to say that it set the bar that all others will be measured at from now until the end of time. Very nice to see so many others here give it the love it truly deserves.

Next up, you may know the top two by now but their order will be revealed in our grand finale~!

Little surprised Godfather films weren't 1 & 2 and disappointed Godfather II didn't edge out the original - for me it's definitely the better film - but can understand why it didn't.
