WC's Fave Five Video Games of 2006!!

With the Xbox 360 ruling the market, the two other big forces of gaming look to catch up toward the end of 2006, truly ushering in a new age as the Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii enter homes across the nation, particularly the latter. Is motion gaming the next hot new thing? Or did gamers prefer the comfort of a traditional controller and not moving at all?

You know the deal, I need a list of your fave five video games of 2006 sent to my inbox this week so I can compile a list of the forum's bestest video games from the year that Wiimotes started flying through TVs. Per usual we're using NA release dates, so please make sure every game on your list was released on this continent in 2006 before sending it in or I'll get very upset with you. I'm looking to get this kicking next weekend so let's get those lists in by Saturday, February 3rd at 11:59 EST. Bon appetit.

Oblivion was good, but a major step down for Morrowind.

Then again, we all know Daggerfall wins for best ES.

    Decent year.

And, no Fuji..There should be no Wii games on this list.

Man, 2006 was one of those strange years in gaming for sure, lots of unheralded games came out of that year, lots I still play too.

It's the only console I played for the year so if I wanted to participate it was going to have to be a list of 5. Luckily I found them although I'm pissed that one of my faves didn't come out in NA until the start of 2007.

I had a pretty easy time compiling my fave 5 versus prior years. Good mix of single player and multiplayer. Honorable mention to Just Cause, which just barely got the cut.

I used to agree with you. Then I discovered Skyrim with 100+ mods.

I'm not sure how it isn't, though?

Narratively, Morrowind encourages a "play at your own pace" style while Oblivion wants the main story to be done as soon as possible and is under the assumption you are going to do the main story first and foremost (spoiler alert: almost nobody really does it, I certainly don't go through the main story). Now, really, Oblivion really only looks better than Morrowind. Also, Morrowind throws you out into the world without that bullshit opening mission that Oblivion and Skyrim have.

Re: WC's Fave Five Video Games of 2006!!

Oblivion having a prologue seems like a weak gripe as its a subjective stance. I prefer it. I disagree that Oblivion only looks better. Though Morrowind is dated, it would be unfair for me to compare them cosmetically as they are from different console generations, and to be fair I played Morrowind on Xbox and Oblivion on PC. While Oblivion may nudge you into the direction of the main quest as you stated, you don't have to go that route, as you also stated. You can play at your own pace same as you would in Morrowind. I'd argue that the storyline and voice acting were superior to Morrowind but the biggest, most important factor in any game debate is game play, and it would be hard to argue that the combat system in Oblivion isn't a vast improvement over that of Morrowind. It's undeniable that more work went into Oblivion in terms of mechanics but I'll say that I preferred the leveling system in Morrowind. Someone suggested that I'd change my stance on Morrowind if I played it with mods and as far as I'm concerned that hurt their argument.

I don't play any of the games with mods, I feel they definitely hurt the core experience. Although I have yet to check out that Macho Man dragon in Skyrim...

I do think Oblivion is a slight step down from Morrowind but it's still a great, great game.

The Dark Brotherhood questline alone is better than anything in Fallout 3, 4 or Skyrim.

Combat system and graphics, I give the edge to Oblivion. Almost everything else, Morrowind. Fantastic setting, better starting sequence, richer lore/storytelling/side-quests/guild-missions. No shitty Oblivion gates over and over. It was janky and could use some improvement, but I liked the conversation system in Morrowind and the breadth of information you could glean from conversations. Oblivion toned that down a lot, which had its pro's and con's. I also feel the voiceovers actually hurt Oblivion. Instead of making it more grandiose and epic, all I could notice was the same voices going on forever, thus breaking immersion. More skills, weapons, and spells in Morrowind made it feel like a more active and real world. Also, motherfucking silt striders.

Oblivion is more accessible and streamlined but Morrowind is the superior RPG. Though nothing in Morrowind felt quite as terrifying as my encounter with the giant slaughterfish. Damnit, now I kinda want to check in on the modding community and see what they've done to these two over the years, but that's far too daunting a rabbit hole to actually go down.

Mods add life to games. For example, i got starcraft 2 for free since blizzard made it free to play. I downloaded a mod that ported the original Starcraft 1 and its expansion Brood War. So now im playing the original using the superior Starcraft 2 engine.

Dude... why would you do that?

I play StarCraft: Brood War only one way, the original way. Although that may have a lot to do with the fact I'm still fucking impressed by it, even after having played it again and again for 10 years straight.
