WWE NXT WWE NXT Discussion: January 10th, 2018

NXT preview, Jan. 10, 2018: Undisputed ERA and SAnitY collide in a NXT Tag Team Title rematch
SAnitY’s penchant for chaos has met an equally disruptive force in Undisputed ERA. The trio of Adam Cole, Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly promised to shock the system upon arriving in NXT and they did just that when Fish & O’Reilly won the NXT Tag Team Titles from Eric Young & Killian Dain on the Dec. 20, 2017, episode of NXT.

However, a New Year is upon the NXT Universe, and the trio of Young, Dain and Alexander Wolfe are thirsty for mayhem as they get their rematch for the coveted tag titles.

Will the talented team of Fish & O’Reilly be able to silence SanitY in this huge NXT Tag Team Championship contest? Or, can NXT’s chaotic faction find a way to disorient the titleholders en route to their second NXT Tag Team Championship reign?

Either way, one thing is for sure: With the combustible factions of Undisputed ERA and SAnitY in the same ring, disorder is sure to follow.

Watch Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly defend their NXT Tag Team Championship against SAnitY in a huge title rematch tonight at 8/7 C on the award-winning WWE Network.

Shayna Baszler makes her NXT in-ring debut
Shayna Baszler will make her highly anticipated in-ring debut in NXT tonight, but she has already made her bullying presence felt on the black-and-yellow brand.

Just two weeks ago, while Kairi Sane was engaged in a stare-down with NXT Women’s Champion Ember Moon, The Queen of Spades blindsided the Mae Young Classic winner with a vicious chokehold.

Baszler’s talent and potential to make an impact in NXT’s Women’s division is undeniable, but there are certainly concerns about her methods so far. The dominating grappler showed no remorse while battling her way to the Mae Young Classic Finals against The Pirate Princess, and that same merciless attitude already seems to be on display in NXT.

Baszler's presence has also been felt at the WWE Performance Center where she offered to "help" show WWE PC rookie Jessica Elaban how to put on a submission hold, only to refuse to let the distressed novice out of the move until Dakota Kai pulled her off. Then, just days later when Kai was being interviewed about facing Baszler tonight on NXT, cameras caught the bruising competitor once again applying a merciless chokehold on an unsuspecting Reina Gonzalez at the WWE PC. What type of unforgiving ruthlessness will we witness in Baszler’s NXT debut match?

Don’t miss Shayna Baszler in action inside an NXT ring for the first time tonight against the world-renowned Dakota Kai at 8/7 C on WWE Network.

Liked that performance center video for Shayna. Confirms her as a beast.

This brand was killing it in the second half of 2017, they’ve carried that momentum really well for their first 2018 episode. Very good episode.

Probably an unpopular opinion but I really like Shayna Bazsler. Very awesome presence, an ace bully, and they nailed her debut.

The main event was very good. Crazy Nikki is so goddamn great and Strong and Black were an awesome replacement.

Lars Sullivan rules. Lio Rush is cool. The Street Profits with Regal was awesome. Kassius is on a hot streak. The Gargano/Almas build is great. Just a great wrestling show. Even the venue is great.

One negative: that Takeover Philly theme is bad.

NXT TV continues to be really good. This week had Kassius Ohno vs. Raul Mendoza, Las Sullivan vs. Lio Rush, and a good tag team main event to boot. Also Undisputed Era definitely came off the best yet as characters, and Kyle O'Reilly played his title walking to the ring.

Honestly, I know its fun to bag on Cole, and even I turned on him for awhile. But his NXT run hasn't been nearly as bad as some make it out to be. And they're clicking right now.

I solemnly swear I am up to no good

Shayna Baszler vs Dakota Kai - Short and brutal...can't say more than that.

Kassius Ohno vs Raul Mendoza - Nice and even match that flowed nicely.

Nice bit of fun between Street Profits and William Regal haha, Profits vs AOP next week should be good.

Lio Rush vs Lars Sullivan - Lasted longer than expected in fiarness. Rush managed a little offence, but a predictable ending.

Undisputed Era vs Aliestier Black & Roderick Strong - Good match until the Cole run in at the end. All for storyline purposes but still they could have let them finish the match properly first.
I have a plan so cunning......

Could've been much worse. The old version of Asking Alexandria were unforgivably awful, at least now they're just generic.

Really, really good episode of NXT to start the year off. All the matches were good or better, progressed story or simply entertained and I felt like they really gave me more insight into the likes of Baszler and Street Profits especially, but also more interesting stuff for Lars, Lio and Undisputed.

I wasn't a big fan of Black being distracted by Cole. It felt like a rookie mistake that he's too smart for but the immediate follow up was too satisfying so I can't complain too much.

Re: WWE NXT Discussion: January 10th, 2018

    - Shanya Bayzler seems like the most obvious coldhearted bully possible. That or the performance center rookies are, like, super trusting. "Here, let me put you in a genuine headlock, just so you know how it feels, mmkay?" "Sure, mysterious stranger, I see no way this can end poorly."

So, seeing her in-ring for the first time, Shayna seems to move a bit sluggish or slow. Her lackadaisical taunting was on point, but she lacked any sense of urgency when it came to actually doing things. Which, come to think of it, may have been on purpose seeing how one-sided this affair was. Why rush through it when you're in total control, I guess. She was toying with Dakota rather than bother to even pretend to take her seriously. I'll have to wait until I see more of her work to contrast this, but if it's on purpose than good job. Poor Dakota Kai tho. That slow-mo replay looks awful.

Good to see Ember Moon making up for not even trying to save Kairi Sane from Bayzler's debuting attack a while ago though. If anything, a 'defender of the weak against foul bullies' thing would help her gain some sort of traction, character-wise.

    - I dig Raul Mendoza, and the Mendoza/Ohno match. Felt like pure speed and agility matched up against also speed and agility, but also power, which made all the difference in the world.

    - Good to see Lio Rush didn't completely blacklist himself after that twitter debacle. He'll only die at Lars Sullivan's hands instead. Aww, they cut out the scream/piano opening of Lars's theme. First Roddy, now Lars. Damnit NXT, quit cutting out the 'you fucked up and death approaches' opening piano riff from themes. Lars vs Dain is gonna be bonkers, though. HOSS FIGHT.

    - Man, way to deny us of not only Fish & Reilly vs Sanity, but also Nikki Cross vs Undisputed Era. I bet Cross would've wiped the floor with these three dweebs. I imagine William Regal was going to be all like 'You two will be defending your NXT tag titles tonight! I was going to have Authors of Pain & Street Profits fight for number one contendorship next week, but fuck it, we're having a triple-threat tag team match right now!' and everyone would be 'cool, nice, I am into this,' but instead Roderick Strong came out and everyone was like 'oh.' Can we just have Fish & Reilly vs Cross & Black instead?

Alright main event. Not bad. Aleister Black essentially buggered himself out of a tag title by stalking Adam Cole and forgetting all about the match, which shows despite his intimidating aura he's not used to the tag team compartment. I liked Cole's expressions after the match as Regal made his match with Black at Philadelphia extreme rules - from indignation, to understanding that no DQ = Fish & O'Reilly can be in his corner and do whatever, to smiling jovially. I hope Black evens the odds by convincing Velveteen Dream to watch his back.

I have no doubt that Cross would destroy Cole at least, Fish and O'Reilly would be closer contests but I wouldn't put money on either guy. Cole would be dead though.

I’ve started to watch NXT TV from right after their WarGames Takeover special, because I figured that was as good a starting point as any, but I heard about the Shayna Baszler deal and decided to skip ahead and watch this week’s show.

The set-up at Center Stage looked really cool, and it looks like the perfect place to tape NXT, or any wrestling TV show because it looks like such an intimate setting.

The whole presentation of Shayna Baszler was tremendous. From interrupting a training session to the finish of her match with Dakota Kai, they did an excellent job of getting Baszler across as a genuine badass who has no compunction about going too far. If this Baszler was on Raw, booked as she is here, Baszler against Asuka could be a WWE women’s program that would actually get over and draw.

It made the AoP/Paul Ellering promo that followed look even more embarrassing. It was very jarring to go from something serious and having an aura of legitimacy to it, to a segment that felt like three people doing a very bad impression of a pro wrestling interview.

The backstage interviewer in the Baszler-Regal segment was beyond awful. Is she usually this bad? Baszler was good, as was Regal, but the interviewer was hideous.

Hearing Mauro Ranallo use the phrase “style of sports entertainment” is one of those things, along with ‘NXT Universe’, that completely takes you out of the moment because it’s wording that nobody in the real world would ever use. WWF/F have been hammering you over the head with phrases like ‘sports entertainment’ for decades and it’s never not going to sound fake and phoney, and it kills the mood you’re trying to set.

I get giving Ohno a win after he lost to Johnny Gargano, but was there no heavyweight jobber they could have used instead of Raul Mendoza? It felt like Attitude Era booking where they’d have their lowest ranked heavyweight beat the top light heavyweight. And I know Mendoza isn’t a top cruiserweight, but it doesn’t help the perception of the cruiserweights when they’re used in what is clearly an enhancement role against the heavyweights.

Zelina Vega was awesome. The lady can talk.

The hideously bad interviewer was back and as bad as ever. But that didn’t matter because the Velveteen Dream was such an awesome heel. If his work ever catches up to his personality, Velveteen Dream is going to be a major star some day.

The Street Profits are another great act, but I have a feeling that may be their undoing if they make it to the main roster. I get the sense they’ll be seen as a team that can lose a lot because their interviews and skits will help keep them over, and as such, they’ll be a very definite ceiling on how far they can go.

The presentation of Lars Sullivan, especially the camerawork and the shadowy shot of him standing in the ring, was excellent. Lio Rush made an excellent jobber to get Sullivan over as a monster. The spot where Rush charged at Sullivan and Sullivan caught him around the throat should be remembered by those in charge, because it would make a great spot to use for an angle; once he’s caught the guy, Sullivan can chokeslam him to the floor or even through the announce table if they really want to go all-out. It could even be used in the Royal Rumble at some point to make for a memorable elimination.

The main event was fine, but the finish made Aleister Black come off as a complete simpleton for falling for one of the oldest and most trite tricks in the book. If they wanted to keep Black out of the ring, it would have been better for Cole to find a way to physically prevent Black from doing so, rather than fooling him in a way that made Black come off as a geek. The least they could have done was have Black chase Cole around, and make it seem like he’d lost his temper.

And where did Roderick Strong go? If they wanted to take him out so they could do the final angle, it needed to be something stronger than just taking the Undisputed Era’s version of Total Elimination. It makes Strong look bad if one double-team move, that did not look devastating and was not sold as such takes him out in such a fashion. At least throw him into steps and knock him out, do something else than just have Strong do a vanishing act. I guess they can use it to set up a heel turn, eventually revealing that Strong intentionally left Black in the lurch.

The post-match angle itself was good, as was Regal coming out to set up the Extreme Rules match at Takeover.

This was my first full NXT TV show in a while, maybe ever, and I was suitably entertained.

Agreed, it was cool to see a different set up for NXT last week. My eyes have grown tired of full sail.

The whole presentation of Shayna Baszler was tremendous. From interrupting a training session to the finish of her match with Dakota Kai, they did an excellent job of getting Baszler across as a genuine badass who has no compunction about going too far. I think Baszler's pretty boring in the ring, and the MYC highlighted her inexperience, I am not looking forward to her run through a division where almost everyone is more talented than she is but MMA gimmick and rep means she's gotta be booked strong. That being said I thought they've hit homes runs so far with her appearances since she signed and think she could well end up being one of the best heel females in NXT history.

Street Profits are another great act, but I have a feeling that may be their undoing if they make it to the main roster. I get the sense they’ll be seen as a team that can lose a lot because their interviews and skits will help keep them over, and as such, they’ll be a very definite ceiling on how far they can go.
I'm sure they'll take a main roster run where they lose more than they win right now. Not every graduate from NXT needs to go on to become champions, the company still needs ditch diggers too. It's still very early days from this team, we've yet to see a good lengthy match out of them and I don't think their long term future will be a tag team because Ford screams a star and will outgrow Dawkins quickly.
