Republicans have the 51 votes they need....unless McCain decides to change his vote just to spite Trump which seems to be his modus operandi these days.

Even then I think the Republicans can swing some moderate Democrat votes from several Democratic Senators up for re-election in Trump states.....like Sen. Joe Manchin of W.V.

He better play nice or he is out in November.

That by their might and by their right

    Of course they do.

Though if McCain did that, as much as I dislike him, it would be hilarious.

Such irony after what occurred when Obama was to appoint a SCOUTS and how that duplicitous turtle threw a tantrum.

And oh yes..better play nice, or I'm sure there are some cheesy nationalist inspired country song lyrics to post and call him out with. :P

in a funny turn of events... Trump whined about countries not putting in enough to Nato. He still doesn't get that the 2% is a recommendation and they can also put far less. Trump even goes on to say he convinced other Nato leaders to raise their contributions.

in response to that, Trudeau says hes not raising Canadian military spending.

That is all well and good.

So the U.S. pays around 4% of their GDP right now.

So lets just start paying about 1% of our GDP.

    Fair is fair.

The rest of the world expects America to pay the bill and provide the protection.

Time for the free ride to stop.

He doesn't. Its just funny that he claimed he convinced (even said he has done what other presidents have failed to do) other Natos members to boost military spending.

Trudeau put that lie to rest.

Ever wonder why that hasn't happened yet? You should look that up. No one cares if you put 1%. You are allowed to.

And its not even a free ride you nerd. Free would mean no one contributes anything except the US.

Also i asked this before....who are the enemies of Canada? Don't be a mark....The Us only protects its interests. If that happens to be the continent we share...oh well!!

Yous can pay what you want.

War is profitable to the US more than any other nation so it only makes sense that they pay the most. Most wars the UK have entered since WW2 have, with the exception of the Falklands, been with the United States as part of NATO - not to protect us, but to fight some war across the world. Most NATO nations don't need protection, and a lot of them use NATO to give the States advantageous bases and intelligence.

The United States led us into Iraq twice, Afghanistan, Kosovo, Bosnia, Libya among others not because we wanted to or not, but because it was our obligation to our treaty. America gets its conflict, and supplies the troops and in return gets whatever intelligence and logistical advantage the NATO nations bring, the troops they can provide, and whatever resolution the US want from the conflict.

NATO is mutually beneficial as it stands. The US chooses to spend that much on military, but in truth they can spend whatever the hell they want. But if Trump wants to chuck that away and the allies that followed them during tough times following 9/11 all because he doesn't understand the concept of NATO then so be it.

Saying all this as a country that spends the second highest on their military.

Agreed on all of this but that bold part is the exact reason why the US spends that much. Not to mention most politicians have high friends who benefit from military spending.

And the rest of NATO benefits when we spend that much on our military......and we still pay nearly 4% of our GDP to this organization.

I say we start paying less since we aren't appreciated anyway.

Maybe NATO is a bit outdated....

Of course they do because it's a mutually beneficial alliance.

    That's the point of it.

You can pay what you want. Nobody is forcing the US to spend 4% of its GDP on its military (not on NATO, on its military). But it is profitable for the US to do so.

Sounds to me like it is only 'beneficial' to those not paying their fair share.

It is not very beneficial to the U.S.

Let's see what would happen if the U.S. left NATO. I bet a lot of countries would start spending a lot more on defense.

It is not fair to rely on the U.S. to protect you then talk shit about us.

Maybe it is time for the big brother (U.S.) to let the little brother (those not paying their fair share) learn to protect themselves from school yard bullies.

You should of voted for Bernie Sanders since he was all for cutting military spending which most likely would of affected Nato spending

You still don't get it. What school yard bullies? Isis? the UK doesn't need the US to fight them and neither does France . Isis doesn't even attack Canada or Japan. And the US isn't protecting anyone except their interests.

This foreign enemy that your country scares you with isnt that scary to the rest of us.

    Keep that military spending going!!!

    This, 100%

NATO works for the US because of the numerous advantages I've already said, namely logistics, intelligence, etc etc. It works for smaller countries because they can say "yeah UK, US, Canada, help us if shit goes down and you can build military bases in strategically advantageous positions and access to our intel".

Dak you have a very ill informed view of what NATO does and how it benefits everyone. You're just regurgitating Trump's nonsense when he clearly doesn't have a clue either.

No Sir, I think it is YOU who have a very ill informed view of what NATO does.

To make the principle work, all countries are expected to chip in. NATO's official guidelines say member states should spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense.

Of the 28 countries in the alliance, only five -- the U.S., Greece, Poland, Estonia and the U.K. -- meet the target.

But a lot of that US surveillance is within NATO nations and is held there because of that alliance. A country in eastern Europe will allow the US to station there in order to collect intel for American interests.

As said, the US is the main country that pushes war within the NATO nations. It spends that much because it positions itself as the number one military in the world and makes money from conflicts worldwide. They voluntarily choose to pay 4% because they feel it's in their best interests. Whereas a country like Germany who doesn't need a strong military doesn't spend as much on its military but provides the US with valuable positioning and intel.

I don't know how this is hard to understand?
