First time ever, I didn't bother to get last years version (2017) as I was kinda' still enjoying 2016 and just didn't have much time.

However, I'll be getting this years for sure. So interested to see how people are enjoying it? Has much changed from 16's version? Who did people start with and why?

Not had an FM since 15 so may be time to try a new one haha. What kind of specs are needed to run the game these days?
I have a plan so cunning......

There were a decent number of changes from 16 to 17, and even more from 17 to 18. Stuff like social media on FM17, which was not really game-changing but pretty fun. FM18 adds squad dynamics, medical center, and some other stuff.

At the very least, worth giving the demo a try when it comes out.

I find it harder and harder to make the switch. Still loving my old FM 15 team. What’s the best new feature?

Probably the squad dynamics. It creates an extra element to squad building.

not gonna buy FM, might buy it on mobile, but for now, I am playing Soccer Manager 2018 on mobile, very good free game. Very similar to FM, I'd recommend it. Can I discuss it here?

    No reason not to, Decl.

Haven't properly settled into a save yet. Had a test save with Lokomotiv Moscow, but that was mostly get a better feel for things, post-Beta.

Re: Football Manager 2018 Discussion Thread

I picked it up on Sunday.

First save I've started as an unemployed past international. Took the Forest job in late October, stuck in 23rd, have managed to get them to 13th by January - a playoff spot may prove a stretch this season though.

So far I've quite enjoyed the dynamics, probably the best of the new features this year. Not fussed on the new Scouting system, struggling to get used to it and not overly keen on the new medical centre either. Early days though I suppose.

    And he scores goals...!

Re: Football Manager 2018 Discussion Thread

I'm quite liking the new additions. Squad dynamics is definitely a great addition. I still don't think there are enough interaction options, whether with player or media. Medical center is helpful in that it shows you who is at risk of injury, which wasn't as clear before. I like the new scouting system, although you still have to click through all the reports so it didn't exactly take away clicks.

I'm in my typical "what to do" muddle. Lokomotiv Moscow is my go-to save now and I could keep going with that or start over. Yesterday, I started toying with a save with Ingolstadt. I rarely do clubs outside the top division, so that kinda appeals. But I do want to go back to South America at some point (Envigado in Colombia, maybe a save in Argentina), and Mexico (Pumas, maybe Lobos). The Netherlands is an old favorite. Its just finding which save to settle on.

Biggest change for the way I tend to play is that its become all but impossible to sign newgens away from their clubs as soon as they are generated.

Re: Football Manager 2018 Discussion Thread

So considered starting a new save in Russia with Lokomotiv, but I'll wait a bit. Maybe until after the winter update. The club has a pair of 21 year old Russian twins - Aleksey and Anton Miranchuk. Aleksey has been one of the best prospects in Russia for a few years and is one of their best young players in FM. But Anton has emerged as a regular for Lokomotiv this season. Not a regular for Russia like his brother, but a good squad player. And he isn't that yet in the game. I could edit him but I'll wait.

Instead of Ingolstadt in the 2.Bundesliga, I decided to head to Mexico. Rather than Pumas (who are one of the biggest clubs in the league), I decide to try Lobos BUAP. A university club in Pachuca, they were a shock promotion side last season and have sat mid-table for most of the season. In game, they don't have tons of talent and their facilities are pretty crap. So should be fun to build up. Without great quality, I probably won't use a Very Fluid tactic like I have tended to for the past couple of versions. Gonna go with a 4-2-3-1 deep (2 DMs, 1 MC, 2 wingers in the MC strata). Will have two versions - one with a press and one without. One of the two DMs will be a Segundo Volante, one of the new roles. Going to have to experiment with the roles of the midfield three - thinking an Anchor Man and SV as the DMs, and maybe a DLP-D as the MC.

Mexico is a much more fun and interesting league than I ever realized. Really enjoyed the save with Pumas on FM17. Had a day-one newgen fullback that I played from day one, and had to sell him to Manchester United for like 20m after 18 months. lots of talented youngsters in Mexico, and pretty good finances so you can go after good players from South America.

Newcastle start with 10.75 million, Diame is valued at 17 million and Jonjo and Ritchie have had their passing stats decreased after getting promoted.

    Wtf is this

Re: Football Manager 2018 Discussion Thread

You picked up FM Mobile, Dec?

Newcastle having money and Ashley letting you spend? Clearly this edition of FM is very fucking broken.

Day off from work yesterday so got partway thru the first season with Lobos. Doing pretty well, but don't know if that's going to last. I snagged a first-day newgen from the MLS who I have been using as a Segundo Volante. He's only 18 and he doesn't have great attributes, but he has the right ones and he's been excelling. A few goals from the DM spot and my highest average rating. The squad is pretty fucking limited though. I'm not getting a lot of goals from any of the strikers and none really fit what I would like up top. Assuming the side survives - should be pretty straight forward at this point, unless we really collapse - its going to mean a heavy rebuild for the second season. And not even by choice - three quarters of the squad are on loan players from other Mexican clubs. Of the players under contract to Lobos, maybe 4 of them have adequate skills to be starters in Liga MX. And two of those are mid-thirties and declining. So I'm not exaggerating at all when I saw I basically need a new squad for the second season. Lobos were a surprise promotion last year and didn't have the quality to compete nor the funds to build so the loans make sense. But its a short term solution.

I've played FM since FM2005. I, like so many, have always focused on youth. Developing players is one of the most fun aspects of the game, and its probably more rewarding to see a player go from good 17 year old to world beating 21 year old than it is to win a trophy. That said, it took me a long time to really understand the idea of squad building. I have almost always managed bigger clubs (at least by that nation) and its only the past few versions where I've started to manage clubs that are at least a full step below the top in their given nation. Managing bigger clubs with a budget to spend, I've always targeted that edition's wonderkids du jour - starting with Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez, Fredy Guarin, Vincent Kompany and Anthony Vanden Borre, Igor Akinfeev, and so many others. But I wasn't really squad building. I was just buying up talent. Sometimes I would bloat the squad horribly, because I wouldn't necessarily get rid of the existing players at the club. And I was targeting potential above all else - how they would fit never came into it. As the Match Engine has evolved, that has become less and less workable. I still go after young talent, but it has to be talent that fits what I want to do. How I want to play.

I have not only learned a bit about squad building, but I also have more respect for the clubs I'm taking over. The existing squad might not be ideal but almost every play can have some value. So instead of signing up 10 or 15 under-23 year old players as soon as I take over a club and trying to sell half the existing squad, I'm more gradual. Tactical familiarity and now squad dynamics make such mass turnover more difficult to make work. But I'm going to have to do a mass squad overhaul with Lobos. I already have the American DM (5 stars baby) newgen and a couple others. I've just been trying to make deals for a couple of 4-star Mexican newgen prospects from smaller clubs. But the club only started with a 150k transfer budget and a million in the bank. That million is gone as we are operating at a loss. Home matches are drawing 10k on average, but average ticket price is $4, so.... I have no idea what kind of budget I'm going to end up with. I can't remember if the Mexican league pays a lot for prize money, and the TV deals are individual to each club. So a huge percentage of the operating budget is going to come from sponsorships, which flatly suck at the moment (based on the club being in the second division). Some new ones will come thru in about June of 2018, but that means I might not get a transfer budget until then. If I get a decent amount of money, this could be really fun. Mexico produces some great newgens, but not many will be good enough yet to really help the club. In previous Mexico saves, I've been able to bring in some quality players from Argentina - not superstars, but solid additions. So South American is going to be my main shopping market for quality additions. I was actually trying to buy Ze Roberto (yes, THAT Ze Roberto) from Palmeiras at the start as he was transfer listed, but I couldn't afford the contract he wanted. He's still an amazing footballer for 42 yeas old.

A unique type of save I've read about a few times is someone starting up unemployed with a good reputation and simming the first season, then taking over a club that just got relegated from the top division in England, Germany, etc. The players are often unhappy and can be sold, and you also typically get a pretty good budget, so you can sell and rebuild with players with potential, have a season or two to mold them, and then end up back in the Prem or Bundesliga as a much better and different version. Something I've been meaning to try for about 3 versions of FM and just haven't yet. This.... will end up being a reasonably similar approach. I have the opportunity to build an entire new side with Lobos.... but I just don't know what I will end up with funds to do so.
