    Countries That Host The Olympics

I was discussing this with some friends and I was wondering what you all thought about this. After the issues in Brazil, do you all think that there should be a more rigorous/in-depth process in deciding the countries that can host the Olympics? Do you think the conditions affect the athletes' abilities? Does the country matter?

I didn't see any issues in Brazil, but there were those that complained a lot.

Re: Countries That Host The Olympics

Do you all think that there should be a more rigorous/in-depth process in deciding the countries that can host the Olympics?

Ya see pal, It's not the countries. It's the governmental structure. The IOC requires a taxpayers guarantee on any financial over-run for the Olympics, so basically, if the government fuck up the financial planning then the populace has to pay for it, which is exactly what happened in Brazil. They basically backhanded the construction using corrupt methods and bankrupted the country.

Brazil is a massive country. 200 million people, 8th biggest GDP, culturally unique and sort-of idolized by Western countries for carnivals and parties and vibrancy and the like. It was a good choice for the Olympics provided they didn't fuck it up. And they did, that's not the IOC's fault.

The whole damn point of the Olympics being in Brazil was to modernize the cities from dangerous favela ridden holes and to set up a legacy of sporting excellence in the country that's hosting it. Now in Rio, the vast majority of the arenas and tower blocks used for the Village are empty shells, even the Maracana isn't being used because they can't pay for the electricity bills. Apparently, street robberies are up 48 percent and deadly assaults by 21 percent, and violent crime has gone up 26 percent compared with the same period in 2016 (got these stats from a press release).

As for the sporting excellence, erm....

Brazil was definitely a suitable country, but the IOC failed to recognize just how deep the corruption went within the ruling parties. Or maybe they did, and that's the problem

Do you think the conditions affect the athletes' abilities?

Hell yeah, it affects their abilities. However, contrary to popular belief, it is not the duty of the IOC to provide the best conditions for athletes to perform at their peak. If that was the case, we'd just have an 'International Olympic Complex' in a giant bubble like the Eden Project with perfect humidity and wind speed. Excuse me but fuck that. Besides, which athletes take priority over conditions? Does a High Jumper who would prefer no wind take precedence over a Javelin thrower who would like a tail wind behind them? Rowers like colder weather, but runners don't because it cramps their muscles... you get my drift?

You have 4 years to prepare for the conditions. If you take it that seriously, move to the damn host country. It's literally your entire job.

    Does the country matter?

In an ideal world, no. Everyone would get along and we'd be one big global family. However, people are people and prejudices are prejudices. I'd love to see an Olympics in India, but it won't happen for decades. Same with Russia, or maybe Cairo or Lagos. Corrupt governments exist, and short of taking the responsibilities out of corrupt government hands and literally building everything themselves, the IOC can't regulate billions of pounds for other countries. It is what it is.

Ruling out certain countries from hosting would certainly make those countries feel a little left out. And considering the whole thing is a competition between all the countries, that's certainty not a good thing.

I don't know much about the selection process but I can only imagine how complicated the process is. Super Bowl bids are pretty complex and get tense at times. And that's just the 32 NFL teams. But all the countries bidding for the Olympics...I'm glad I don't choose.

Why isn't it possible for the Olympics to be done in India or Russia? The Winter Olympics was held in Russia a few years back.

I know one reason maybe that they feel somewhat regressive in terms of social issues. I'm pretty sure I've had several instances this year of listening to the news and hearing about some sort of gay purge this year?

    Infrastructure.

Russia was able to (barely) hold the winter olympics because it had (barely) the correct infrastructure to house an that is native to Russia's best known quality - the cold.

India doesn't have good winters, and the Summer's are usually brutal. Though most Olympic sports are held in-doors, India doesn't even have that infrastructure. They lack the appropriate funds, materials, infrastructure and appetite.

As for if the country should matter. I think it should because IOC knows it can leverage its potential benefits over those who wish to gain them. Most countries use their leverage of big bucks to get IOC interested, and they use it as a diplomatic tool. It's a big political scheme. However, the question was "should" and I still think it should. There's a lot at stake, and each country has a unique flavor to add to the games.

How quickly people forget that Russia were literally banned from the Rio Olympics for Drug Abuses.

Siderant: That should have been the biggest story in the history of Sport and it was criminally under-reported to the point where people don't remember it even happened. Disgraceful.
