I'd rather have got a fresh one off draft.

Who knows! Jimmy G looked good in a few games. But I wouldnt bank a franchise on that.
But you would on a QB from the draft that hasn’t played a single down in the NFL? Can’t really see how that makes more sense than going with the guy that’s actually won games with a less than stellar supporting cast, even if the sample size is small. Did they overpay? Sure, but they couldn’t run the risk of him going to another team and winning there.

This also lets them focus on areas they actually need to in the draft this year, like secondary help to deal with Goff and Wilson for the foreseeable future.

Jimmy G played the 49ers out of the top 3 in the NFL Draft. Now they're picking 9th. The guy they'd want might be gone by then. So even if they pick their 2nd, 3rd, or 4th choice at QB, it might not be as comforting as a guy who is already on the roster and knows the coaches, system, and players, and has shown a knack for winning with a team that was garbage before he arrived.

Teams often bank their futures on small sample sizes and "strong finishes." The 49ers believe he is their franchise QB for the next decade. You might as well lock that up.

tbh the risk is well worth the reward. If he's worth it they're a good team for many years and can build around a franchise QB. If he ends up sucking they'll figure that out in a year or two, dump the contract, and start over. They'll have lost a few years, but it's worth it for the gain of a potential decade+ of quality QB play.

I mean look how quickly Houston has already gotten past the Osweiler mistake. Those contracts aren't exactly nails in the coffin.

It's been mentioned on many news sources that Johnny Manziel's reflecting on his alcoholism and having bipolar disorder.

Here's a video of his interview:

Alcoholism and Bipolar disorder's nothing to laugh at. I'm very happy that Manziel finally opened up about his struggles. I believe he's very serious at taking the right direction in life and get back to what he desires, and that's playing football. I hope this is no facade and make us look like fools.

Having those issues doesn't mean he is any better, though.

In anything, it may be something to retroflect on.

But his NFL days are gone. And while I am compassionate as a fellow mental illness sufferer, I also worry this is pandering.

Looks like Derrick Johnson is a free agent from the Chiefs.
