Re: Champions League 2017/18 Discussion Thread

In Germany, it goes beyond that. Any "plastic" club's are generally disliked. Any club that skirts the 50+1 rule or is outright exempt is held it contempt by most supportes. Leipzig aren't hated because they have money. They are hated because they are corporate owned, built around brand advertising, and found a very facetious way around the 50+1 rule. They are a corporate built club, wiping out the history of the previous smaller club's.

Outside of Germany, where the 50+1 rule probably doesn't mean much, they are no worse than any other club with rich benefactors. Unless you have issue with UEFA ignoring their own rules about club's with the same owners playing in European competition.

Besiktas 2-0 RB Leipzig. Jesus Christ, 2 out of 2. We play in a whole different level in Champions League, our defence is especially solid. Thank you Pepe, so glad you came to Besiktas. *BAM* *BAM* *BAM*

Probably the result of the round. At least of today. Good win by Madrid over Tottenham, and Porto has to be a bit of an upset over Monaco, but great work by Besiktas. A lot of people had big expectations of Leipzig after they did so well in the Bundesliga last season, and they haven't fallen off that much in the league so far.

Basically, German clubs can't have private ownership for majority control of a club. A majority of the club shares (50 percent plus one more percent) must be owned by the club's members. There are exceptions because of corporate clubs (aka plastic clubs) like Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg. There are a couple of other situations that were "grandfathered" in because they existed before the rule. Before the rule, clubs simply could not have private ownership.

Leipzig are technically a member-owned club, but there are only a few members, all employees of Red Bull, and new members can be rejected without reason. So they are following the letter of the law but not the spirit.

4-1 was a great result against CSKA Moscow.Martial ripped them apart on some occasion. Moscow was terrible though.

Yeah wasn't expecting a big win like that at all. CSKA had never lost by more than two goals at home in the Champions League before.

Some win for Chelsea as well. Should give them the edge to finish top of their group.

CSKA have a defense that is outright ancient. Ignashevich is 38 and the Berezutskiy brothers are 35 (though only one played today). Moreover, they are slow. Looks like United was able to capitalize on that very effective. Good win.

What a win in Madrid. We'll always be the first team to beat them there. Need to get the double win over Roma before getting the better of Qarabag again so that the final game is pointless.

Only problems outside group stage are Bayern could be lying in wait. Although they were pretty poor last night.

Well that will depend on who Bayern appoint as their new manager haha.

Way too easy for Man Utd last night. The way Benfica are playing in Europe Man Utd could be through after 4 games

Real vs Spurs could be pretty tasty. If Kane & Dele do well there, no doubt Real will be circling them in the summer.

Man City vs Napoli should be a very tasty game. Would be interested to see how both teams go up against each other. Same with Real and Spurs, will be interesting to see how Madrid handle Spurs pressing style. I'm sure Spurs will lose but It will be interesting to see how well they handle the the European Champions.

I expect a United win at Benfica, no excuses our squad is much better then Benfica's.

Away victory against Monaco makes our campaign three wins out of three matches, that's fucking mental. I wish we could play the same way in the league.

Man Utd...4 wins from 4...still not qualified for the last 16...not often that happens.....Plus some of that Chelsea defending at times wowzers...they pull that on the weekend they'll be hit for another 3 if not more. Celtic also put out of their misery as expected.

Looking forward to some more fun in the Spurs/Real game tomorrow, Real must be out for revenge after the draw at the Bernabeu.

Awful from us. Morata down on confidence. Cahill continues to baffle me why he gets played... captain or not. Might be an unpopular opinion but he's 5th choice CB for me. Also missing Kante badly. His injury is making us overplay Bakayoko who still needs settling into playing twice a week with the strenuous style of the Premier League.

Thankful for Qarabag holding Atletico again. Win in Azerbaijan next time out and we are through, which is a big upside for us.
