Battleground Battleground 2017 - WWE Champion Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton (Punjabi Prison Match)

At WWE Money in the Bank, Mahal’s faithful cohorts, The Singh Brothers, not only cost Orton his chance to regain the WWE Title, but also attacked his father, WWE Hall of Famer “Cowboy” Bob Orton. In response, one week after attacking Mahal, a still seething Orton opted to hold up the June 27 edition of SmackDown LIVE. Orton threatened the titleholder’s family and everybody else who would dare to get in his way until he received another WWE Championship Match against The Modern-Day Maharaja.

Though SmackDown LIVE Commissioner Shane McMahon agreed that The Viper deserved another title opportunity, he decided that the personal nature of the rivalry between the two Superstars demanded a special match stipulation. Because Orton already lost his mandatory rematch, Shane-O-Mac indicated that he would allow Mahal to choose the stipulation.

In a stunning announcement, The Modern-Day-Maharaja declared that he would give WWE’s Apex Predator a taste of his homeland by resurrecting the infamous Punjabi Prison! But what exactly will the intimidating Punjabi Prison Match consist of?

With Randy Orton and Jinder Mahal locked inside the dreaded Punjabi Prison, there is no way to predict who will walk out with the WWE Championship. Don’t miss WWE Battleground, streaming live on WWE Network on Sunday, July 23 at 8 ET/5 PT.

I'm absolutely fine with this being a Punjabi Prison match. The whole feud is Mahal arguing that nobody respects him. By negating the Sing Brothers, sure, he's taking away the advantage that's won him the title and the rematch against Orton, but he's not giving the advantage to Orton. All he's done really is leveled the playing field, which is a strange thing for the heel to do, but he's also going to be able to inflict punishment on Orton while also beating him fair and square once and for all through this match, which he can use post-match to argue that nobody can argue that he's the undisputed champion now.

I can also understand why WWE have gone for this match stipulation from a marketing point of view. It's the first Punjabi Prison match in 10 years, people will want to tune into Battleground just to be able to witness that out of curiosity. Not saying that everyone will but there will be a lot of people I bet that will be curious to see this unfold live.

I think that is the main point. For a lot of viewers, this is the first time seeing the Punjabi Prison match, so it does make sense...plus it opens up the possibility of a Corbin cash in due to it being a brutal style of match. Clever stuff indeed.

Maybe I'm selling Jinder and the WWE's plans for him short but I thought this was probably an easy pick for Orton to win since he's lost the other two matches. The heel's plan backfires and he loses the title in a stipulation that was supposed to work in his favor.

It's always possible Rage, but if they're really gonna run with this they should commit and make Jinder; have him fend off Orton, have him fend off Cena and then have him drop the belt against (for instance) Nakamura in his first attempt because that makes Nakamura (or whoever they pick) look better and smarter than Orton and Cena, or at least on their level.

Them passing the title back and forth between Orton and Jinder isn't interesting to me and doesn't help anyone - it makes Jinder look like a fluke and does nothing to dispell the idea that Mahal is a jobber with a body that Vince sprung a stiffy for and then regretted pulling the trigger on because he couldn't hang. Jinder has all the tools to make it, he just needs a chance to get all his ducks in a row; he can cut a promo, he can work to a certain level in the ring and he has a character seems to resonate live at least. A two or three month reign over the course of one feud doesn't let him work out all the kinks.

Mahal will retain here. Orton did a good job with his promo on Smackdown of convincing me that Mahal has picked the wrong stipulation for the reason that he's taking away The Sing Brothers. But Mahal will find a away and retain. I'm just curious as to who will be facing Mahal next.
