Money in the Bank Money in the Bank 2017 - Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match

The SmackDown LIVE Women’s division is once again about to prove just how ground-breaking it can be. At WWE Money in the Bank, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Natalya, Tamina and Carmella will compete in the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

The fuse for the unprecedented showdown was lit during the May 30 edition of SmackDown LIVE when all five Superstars competed in a 5-Way Elimination Match to determine the new No. 1 contender to SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi at the highly-anticipated June 18 pay-per-view.

None of the athletes proved willing to wait for the bell, though, and a pre-match brawl inevitably broke out, setting the stage for all-out bedlam.

As the dust cleared, SmackDown LIVE Commissioner Shane McMahon picked up the mic and acknowledged just how hungry the five competitors were for a chance at the prestigious title. Taking pride in Team Blue being The Land of Opportunity, Shane-O-Mac seized the moment to make history by declaring that all five Superstars will square off in the first-ever Women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match.

With ladders placed all around the ring, who will conquer the opposition, climb the dangerous rungs, grab the Money in the Bank briefcase and capture the coveted contract to earn an opportunity to challenge for the SmackDown Women’s Championship anytime they wish in the next year? Find out on June 18 at 8 ET/5 PT, streaming live on WWE Network.

Re: Money in the Bank 2017 - Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match

You know, I figured the number one contenders match would give Naomi something to do at this show and then the remaining girls (and perhaps two ladies from NXT who won spots on the show somehow) would go into a ladder match with a Money in the Bank briefcase to fight over, because this doesn't actually solve the number one contendership issue - the winner of this can cash in right away, or she can wait until a more opportune moment within the next year, and why wouldn't she do that. So while this is cool and all it still leaves Naomi, the women's champion (who should be the focal point of the division) with nothing to do and no one to face for the forseeable future.

Unless, Lana or Eva Marie (seriously, what's going on with her?) show up to challenge her in the mean time.

I get what you're saying, Raiz. But on the flip side, we've seen what having a sole focal point in a division did for Raw last year in copious amounts of Charlotte/Sasha/Bayley matches and nothing else. If nothing else, Smackdown at least tries to give every woman in its roster something to do and something to chase.

Re: Money in the Bank 2017 - Women's Money in the Bank Ladder Match

I can't tell you how much it irks me that we're getting two straight PPV's without the Women's Championship being defended. She's very close to becoming the longest reigning Champion in the belt's history already and has done it with only a singular defense that ended in shenanigans. And it's particularly ridiculous because she just had to vacate that same Championship for the 30 day rule BS. The implication being that the rule only matters if you physically can't defend it or if Alexa Bliss calls you out on it. There's still time though, I'm kinda hoping that Lana gets a title match at the event just so the Championship can be on the show. Even if they basically flies in the face of why it even reached this point, someone coming in and getting an immediate title match. Another idea would be for the winner to cash in immediately after they win the match. Like Charlotte wins, notices everyone else is taken down, and is all like, "Okay Naomi, get out here, I'm cashing in right now" then she wins the Championship in an amazing double history making moment. The title needs to be on the line.

That complaint out of the way, I'm stoked for this. It's a shame Sasha Banks is missing out on this since she's mentioned previously that she really wants to be in a Money in the Bank match but the match looks pretty solid. Not really sure who wins here, my guy instinct says Charlotte because WWE loves to give Charlotte every history making moment they can (and for good reason) but she also really doesn't need the briefcase, she already has a good case for getting a Championship match after all. So I'm expecting someone besides her, I'm thinking Becky Lynch. Or that insane idea I mentioned above. I'm honestly now leaning towards that. If that happens, I'm a mad genius.

Whilst I understand what you're saying, it'd make more sense if it were a more prestigious, renowned title. In reality, it's a <1 year old title that's already on its fifth champ. It could definitely do with some more prestige though, no doubt. But in a company with two of every belt (3if you count NXT), that's not easy to achieve.

I don't mean she should be the only one getting attention, I just mean that as champion she should be presented as a vital part of the division but she's barely mentioned at this point.

I was either listening to Tights & Fights or the Store Horsemen podcast and someone mentioned that Naomi not having a match on this show actually helps the focus stay on this "historic first ever" match and doesn't muddy the waters, which I can see the argument for, but I hope she gets to do something so that it's made clear that while she's not involved in the match she is/has the reason all these ladies are putting themselves through this harrowing match in the first place.

I'm hoping for Natalya or Becky. I would love for Eva to return when all the women are down and just grab the case easily.

True, this isn't as a bad as if it was a championship with an extensive lineage (which I think, WWE has like four of those left now) but I also think it's important to quickly establish a Championship if it's going to be a focal point of an entire division. To be honest, the problem isn't necessarily with this PPV, while I'd prefer the Championship also be on the line, the idea of doing something never done before simply because the women want the Championship too much to settle it under normal circumstance is a pretty nice concept that I do think can do good for the title, it's mostly Backlash's fault. The six Women tag match felt way too much like a Smackdown encounter, and was more about Smackdown veterans (& newcomer Tamina) being mad at Charlotte getting the Charlotte treatment than about the Championship. I'm sure it'll work out fine but I can't get over how much this bothers, though I'm still looking forward to this match.

Which on that note, there are two more things I want to say about the match. First, I hope Charlotte does a moonsault off a ladder onto all the girls, it would be awesome. & two, I can't wait to see what ridiculous hairdo Becky sports for this match.

Eva Marie's done with WWE. They're just running down her contract.

I think Carmella is the clear favorite to win this one. Seeing as they're pushing forward with Charlotte as a babyface, Becky doesn't need it IMO and I can't see them putting it on Natalya or Tamina as they're both veterans, then I think Carmella (who they're apparently high on) is the clear favorite to take the briefcase home.

There's a weird rumour doing the rounds that there will be another entrant in this match. And they'll win.

PWInsider been reporting about Maria Kanellis making a return soon. Just in time for this show. She and Bennett touring with SDL too according to them. Iirc Meltzer reported Maria and Bennett joining WWE a few months ago.

What a surprise that would be eh. I just dont think WWE would book Maria as the winner of this though.

I don't see them using Maria as a wrestler when she returns. She'll be used as a valet with Bennett I think, much like Maryse with Miz. As far as I'm aware she's barely wrestled since she left WWE and has just been valeting Bennett so I don't expect to see her get in the ring as a wrestler unless it's for a special mixed tag team match.

Man, if that's true, I can't believe Mike Bennett is going to work for pretty much every major promotion in the past three years.

    What's a TNA?

JK. Fair enough, I didn't know that. I think I'm right in saying that she doesn't wrestle as much as a normal performer does though, right?

James Ellsworth will take the most dangerous bumps in this match. Rooting for Carmella to win so James can hold the briefcase and tell Shane to stop mansplaining so much to them.

I think Bennett's massively underachieved by not getting to WWE years ago when they were still focused on signing green, muscular, douchebags and his ROH gimmick was basically "I'll be in WWE soon".

Yeah I think Carmella is winning this. The briefcase is just perfect for her gimmick with Elsworth.
