Their policies are more around the working class rather than the upper class that the Conservatives cater for.

Re: UK General Election 2017 Thread

Very unfair to slate the Lib Dems for partnering with the Tories. Partnering with the popular party was the right choice since it was all about what the people wanted.

On NMW - aren't Labour adopting the £10 policy now too? I probably wouldn't vote Green until they prove themselves but fuck me, I would rather have a cactus rammed up my arse before I ever vote Tory.

There is no party in the UK that really represents me well enough tbh and the FPTP system is fucked with the rise of all the newer parties.

Re: UK General Election 2017 Thread

The Lib Dems couldn't have gone with Labour because Clegg said in the debates that he would side with the party that got the most votes and even a Lib/Lab coalition wouldn't have a majority. The Tory coalition was the only possible partnership and it made for a pretty good government that did a lot of things right. Of course it came at the overall detriment of the Lib Dems unfortunately, but the coalition was probably the most stable government I can remember.

Labour are going up to £8 for NMW by 2020, which sounds about right and seems like it would be fine. Haven't heard anything about £10 NMW, but it wouldn't surprise me with this Labour party.

Re: UK General Election 2017 Thread

Clegg in the debates was GOAT. He smashed it and deserved way more than he got in that election. Tories used him as a scapegoat and he took the heat for a lot of stuff. I didn't like the government at all, though. Lib Dems definitely helped but the coalition only served to ruin them.

Labour really have fucked up their leadership elections over the years but if the right Miliband was chosen, things could've been different.

I read that Corbyn had said it was £10 by 2020 if elected. Makes sense to me that he'd adopt that policy. Labour's policies, on the whole, aren't very bad but Corbyn just turns people off. It's disappointing as I think he is generally ok.

Clegg is a great man. He made 2 big errors but otherwise was a very fine leader and was one of the few people in government who truly put country before party.

He deserves a lot more respect than he gets. He's a very intelligent forward thinking guy. I will defend him to the end but I understand his reputation with Dem voters is ruined.

I was almost certainly going to vote Lib Dem but after Farron refused to deny homosexuality was a sin I'm in two minds again.

I think Clegg could've been a great prime minister. He just got done over the student tuition fees and stuff. I can respect him for siding with the Tories since it was political suicide to do so. Makes you wonder how bad Tories could've been without the Libs there though.

Dim Tim is nothing and whilst his personal views are weird, I wouldnt let it dissuade me from voting Lib Dem. Especially if my MP was a nice person.

Farron has voted for lgbt rights and equality and gay marriage at every chance. His voting record is impeccaple in that regard.

Yeah I know but when he was asked yesterday he refused to answer the question which didn't sit well with me. Still my number one choice over the other two clowns though.

Even if he did think that, his voting record shows that he is someone who wouldn't impose his beliefs on others and deny their rights.

I don't think he actually thinks it, he's just a Christian man who is admittedly very bad at answering the question.

The Greens insisting on a 33% increase on NMW (from £7.55 to £10) is a huge jump that has never been done before. It will make thousands redundant, put businesses out of business, young workers would be neglected because they will just go for more experienced workers. When the increase in NMW is gradual, there hasn't been a problem - but you can't say it's never been a problem to raise NMW because it hasn't been risen by 33% in 3 years before. Minimum wage needs to increase steadily.

There's nothing wrong with immigration, but it is naive to think that people will just accept it. World politics has given a big middle finger to globalism in the last 12 months, and there's a growing sense of national pride in the UK and US. You can't really ignore that and you can't ignore the will of the people. So any party that encourages more open immigration really needs to rethink themselves.

I'm not happy with the Tories and wouldn't vote for them myself, but they're a far more attractive option to me in 2017, with the way the world is and the fact that we are going to go through Brexit, than the Green Party. Like I said, I am genuinely terrified of the prospect of the Green party because they have deluded and unrealistic policies which won't work in the world we live in.

EDIT: The best government in my lifetime was the Coalition of Lib Dems and Conservatives. Steady progress, and they worked together to make some tough decisions and pulled us out of a hole. The Tories have us back in the hole when left to their own devices. I want to see the Lib Dems in a position where they can make an impact. They'll never have an outright majority, and the Conservatives wont need a coalition to win this election, but the LD could make enough of an impact to be a real player again in 2022.
2020 was the NMW target in 2015 manifesto, so I assume it will be changed to 2022 for this one.

I can't believe I'm going to say this as I can't stand the man, but I would have to go with Blair's first term as the best govt in my lifetime. Minimum wage, Good Friday agreement, Data protection and FOI. He did actually do some good things before he disappeared up Bush's, and then his own, arse.

Coalition and current ones remind me of the Nye Bevan quote about the art of conservative politics being for the rich to convince the poor that poverty is in the national interest. I do agree that Clegg and co reined the idiots in a lot more than I think anyone realised at the time. Suspect history will be kinder to him than 2015 was.

Speaking of 2015, anyone else see Miliband on The Last Leg a couple weeks ago? Comes off so much better now he isn't shackled.

Poor Milliband.....it's a shame Labour chose the wrong Milliband in the first place, maybe then we wouldn't be in such a mess as he was more respected and liked than his brother...anywho we won't go there.

I must agree Blair has been the best for my generation too. He did a hell of a lot of good especially having to clean up for the previous Conservative government. Given how the general British public like cycles, we won't see another Labour cycle until 2022, and then they need someone who is strong to be leading them.

    Absolutely right.

Fantastic pm in his first term but his reputation has rightfully been destroyed by Iraq.

Re: UK General Election 2017 Thread

Dunno if you live under a rock but Thatcher barely gets away with anything where I live. She's a vile cunt of a woman. And I'd certainly bet a decent amount that Blair secretly looked up to her with how much he seemed to love playing war and sniffing up the arse of President Bush.

Her role in Falklands as well as other conflicts at the time is really bad. The belgrano incident the worst assuming she gave the order.

Unfortunately, she can't be jailed cause she's deader than Labour atm.

Blair though? Still kicking about with the knowledge he is partially responsible, with Bush and other advisors, for the needless deaths of many in Iraq. No legal justification for any of it. Credit to Blair for 'New Labour' and being a breath of fresh air for his time... But his need to appease the US and lust for war will forever define him.

Reading that UKIPs candidate to replace Carswell in Clacton (?) has just admitted he knows nothing about the place. Wonderful politicking there son, sure youll be elected in 6 weeks time.

Looking forward to SNP losing a few seats and May trying to paint it as the Ruth Davidson party coming back. Hope they get wiped out, though.

Also saw ITV are doing debates without May. Well, Jeremy Corbyn is going to end up getting hammered as he will be the main enemy of others.

Nah I don't live under a rock. Thatcher was resoonsible for closing the valley mines which in turn ruined our economy via job losses and money from selling the coal on. Many miner towns are still in the shit because of it and that was almost 30 years ago.

On the flip side, will Al Murray run again?

Northerner here, Thatcher is basically despised everywhere north of Birmingham. We celebrated when the bitch died.
