The Awesome Albums of 2017 Thread

Taking a cue from CaptainC, here's a thread to discuss all the cool stuff you've been listening to throughout the year.

I'll start with Idles album Brutalism, one that I've had on repeat for the last few days. Something tells me it'll be right up Nicky's alley...

Also digging the new Laura Marling, Vagabon and Thundercat albums.

    Called it, Fuji. Loved it.

New Thundercat and Real Estate albums have been my favorites so far.

Re: The Awesome Albums of 2017 Thread

The xx - I See You
    Kehlani - Sweetsexysavage
    Migos - Culture
    Big Sean - I Decided
    Jidenna - The Chief
    Jonwayne - Rap Album Two
    Khalid - American Teen
Taylor Bennett - Restoration of An American Idol

Those are probably my favorite albums this year (I checked Wiki for this so I may have missed a few lesser known ones that don't appear on there). Lupe Fiasco's DROGAS Light was insanely disappointing, and I still don't really enjoy FUTURE or Drake, admittedly Drake still had some pretty good tracks. Culture kind of drops off in the last 3rd but the first 8 tracks are pretty great. Bad and Boujee is obviously mint but I really liked Big on Big. I Decided isn't as good as the last one, and I still would prefer another TWENTY88 album but it's honestly really solid from top to bottom. He's not an elite rapper but he's a very easy listen. Jidenna obviously captured my attention thanks to Luke Cage and Jonwayne's Rap Album Two is really good. Need to listen to it more. Taylor Bennett's Restoration of An American Idol is great, he's just as good as Chance The Rapper and honestly I'm sure he's bound for the same level of success. Does help that he's always got great features but I almost wish he'd have a featureless one.

American Teen is easily my favorite album out this year. Love it top to bottom, and everyone I've played this around has ended up asking me who sang it and tried to get on it too.

I need to listen to J.I.D.'s The Never Truth some more and Stormzy's Gang Signs & Prayers because they didn't get me the first two times.

That Jidenna track is off the hook, love it. Glad you dug Idles Nicky, the rest of the album is more of the same.

Aimee Mann's new album comes out on Friday and the two songs I've heard have been great.

Re: The Awesome Albums of 2017 Thread

Joey Bada$$ came out with ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ and it's really good. I haven't listened to his old album(s) and some say its a different step for him musically but its a really great step. Awesome album. Not sure yet how it'll rank for me at the end of the year.

On the complete other end of the spectrum, Father John Misty's Pure Comedy is also pretty mint. Loved I Love You, Honeybear and still prefer it at the moment but I'm still relistening to this one before my final verdict. Still, really good stuff.

Pure Comedy is fine. Might be the weaker of his three albums. It felt rushed compared to how much time he took on ILYH, but it still have some gems.

Might be a fairly unpopular opinion but Dragonforce - Reaching Into Infinity is pretty damn good, shout out to The Edge of The World for best track on the album.

    Things I've gotten recently:

The Buckingham/McVie album - It's Feetwood Mac without Stevie Nicks, pretty good, they swap vocals every other song.

Cheap Trick's new one just showed up yesterday and I haven't gotten to it yet.

I also have new stuff from Afghan Whigs, Rancid and Dan Auerbach floating around the apartment.

Looking forward to the new QOTSA album...should be sooner than later.

That Afghan Whigs album is great, I've listened to it a few times already.

Currently enjoying a plate of Pulpo Gallego via Tapastalk.

Heard some of the upcoming War On Drugs album, all the songs were really strong and I'm sure when the rest is available it'll be an AOTY contender. That guys been real consistent.

The new Do Make Say Think album is one of their best. If you're into that post-rock instrumental tip you'll probably dig it. Beach Fossils album Somersault is really good as well. Also, not for everyone but there's a band called Pixx and their album The Age of Anxiety is well worth checking out.

Re: The Awesome Albums of 2017 Thread

Apricot Princess by Rex Orange County
    Digital Druglord by Blackbear
    SATURATION by Brockhampton

Those are probably my favorite albums out this year. I listen to Apricot Princess pretty much every single day. That said, my two favorite ROC songs aren't on the album. For those who watched Dear White People, his song UNO is one of the episode enders.

Brian Eno's been having a sneaky year. A musical pioneer and showing that he's still got it. He's already got multiple projects this year, and it's definitely been something. If you're into boring ambient music, the kind of music to just have on in the background while sitting in a dark room, then you really need to check out Reflection.
