CD's - Are They About To Become Extinct?

So, pretty simple question, is the CD not long for this world and is digital downloads how we'll be buying all our music in the next few years?

Personally i still love buying a CD, more because although my car has a jack so i can connect my iPod, i still like to have a CD too.

I've seen such a decline in stores too like HMV where their CD section is now nearly non existent but they've still got them and people will still buy them.

Voted Kane just because I could but I still buy the odd CD here and there. Buy more vinyl these days mind you and I actually bought a cassette the other day as well. As long as hard media exists, I'll still bite because I like something tangible, but it's impossible to deny that digital is more convenient.

I'd love some Vinyl but haven't got the space or a deck to play it on and its actually quite expensive too, £20 minimum for some of the ones i saw.

Did buy a few CD's yesterday though

I still buy physical media for my favourite artists like Metallica or Maiden because it's nice to have it as part of the collection, plus I only have a CD player in the car so I still use them.

you ain't got bluetooth? girl, buy a third party system and have the geeks at the electronics store install it, that's what i did. my system was only a hundred bucks or so. my 97 civic has a better set up than most newer cars tbh.

I love having a cd collection and usually go for the deluxe editions if I can. When I drive I like cruising full albums instead of random shuffles in order and fully appreciating the entire thing.

this basically. I don't have bluetooth but I went to best buy and bought like the cheapest cd player they had with a AUX jack for like 60 bucks.

I have thought of doing something like that, but I ain't spending a hundred on it when the car isn't worth much more

CD's have had a good run though. I remember being really into MiniDiscs when I was about 11-12 and thinking it was gonna be the next big thing, spending my money on blank discs and then MP3 players hit it big not long after and they sort of died off, still got hundreds of albums recorded onto MiniDiscs horded somewhere.

Re: CD's - Are They About To Become Extinct?

Personally if I buy nowadays I tend to lean more towards vinyl. Still got a decent bunch of CD's, but probably wouldn't consider buying too many more in the future apart from my favourite artists.

Still prefer having a physical collection of music compared to downloading everything though.

I still buy CDs. Even though once I buy them, I'll copy them to my iPod and rarely listen to them via CD again. I like seeing the effort that goes into them, not just the music but the album and booklet artwork, reading the lyrics etc.

Extinct in the sense they are becoming third (to digital and vinyl) on the list of "how you listen to music"? Sure.

Extinct in the truest form, that they'll completely vanish from the earth? No.

Whether they get to the point that cassettes are now depends on the automobile industry and how it evolves its audio systems. I would call cassette tapes extinct, even if you could find some Meatloaf ones lying around in your dad's random box in his closet.

Cassette sales actually rose 74 percent last year...

It's also interesting to note that in that article it mentions CD sales were in the 105 million unit range, so yeah, they aren't going the way of the Dodo just yet.
