Greatest Upsets in Sports Volume 2 - The Miracle on Ice

I was thinking about this idea similar to what I do with TNA going back in time to classic moments, but doing greatest upsets in Sports over the years. Theirs been tons of them, and one of the first that come into my mind is Busta Douglas ending Tyson's undefeated streak while taking the Undisputed Heavyweight Title from him in Tokyo, Japan in February, 1990. I remember watching this as a kid, Tyson was my guy who got me into Boxing during that era he was the baddest man on the planet. I think Tyson when he was with Cus D'Amato, he was more focused, more humble and a better Boxer than he ever was after his death. I think after his death, he lost himself joining Don King, his Marriage with Robin Givens and firing his Trainer Rooney during this time. Tyson's head wasn't in the right place, he wasn't in the fight, he was almost wanting to lose because being so young the stardom was getting to him. Busta Douglas gave to him all night, not afraid of his punching power, or his intimidating tactics he liked to use on his opponents. Still one of the biggest upsets in Boxing, Busta didn't hold the title long, but he can always hang on his hat that he knocked out one of the greatest in the Boxing Ring.

Oh if anyone has Greatest Upsets in Sports ideas I should talk about, just post them here or pm them to me thanks.

Tyson was just destroying people up to this point
One could argue that Boxing as a whole never recovered from this fight

Yeah the Heavyweight Division was quite stale after he went to Jail, titles were flip flopping left and right. Tyson never recovered as well, I mean he won back the heavyweight title, but he was never the person or fighter than he was in his first run as champ.

Re: Greatest Upsets in Sports Volume 1[Busta KO's Tyson!]

Nice thread idea. Are we gunna have a different one for each upset, or shall I alter the thread title after each post?

I just watched the incredible Tyson vs Holyfield 30 for 30 documentary on Netflix, I'm not usually a big boxing guy but it was truly incredible. It really showed the impact this single upset had on so many top level careers.

As for why this ACTUALLY happened, it's probably a combination of a lot of things.

    - Tyson underestimating Buster, and underappreciating the strength of the division at that time because he just steamrolled everyone normally.
    - Buster being bang up for the fight because of the death of his mother
    - Tyson going through a transition from traditional boxing training and coaching to just hiring Don King lackeys who pumped his ego even higher
    - Jail stuff
    - I'm sure some drugs stuff too.
    - Death of the father figure Cus D'Amato.

..... and immediately I've fallen int to the same trap. Not talking about how good Buster Douglas fought. So easy to do whenever Tyson's involved, pure spotlight hogger.

Hmm that's a good idea to just keep them all in one thread so theirs isn't a overload of them. Thanks up front for the changing the thread each time Nash. Yeah Douglas I forgot lost his Mother 23 days before, truly a strong person to be able to handle himself in a Boxing when clearly he was thinking about his Mother at the time. Tyson was suppose to face Holyfield if he won over Busta, so underestimating him was a true thing, and he paid for it. Tyson truly did have Leeches like he said it on one Documentary, people wanted to be around him for his money, and his arrogance grew because of it, because when people are telling you day and night how great you are, it's going to fill your head up real quick. If he had a true friend at that time, he might of not of made bad decisions later in his life.

Same year your Pats won the SB over my Eagles, a game I'll never forget. Blood Sock Game though in the 2004 ALCS game, I think was Game 6? Cavs 3-1 down to the Warriors last Finals is a topic I'll talk about no doubt.

Re: Greatest Upsets in Sports Volume 1[Busta KO's Tyson!]

I don't think comebacks are the same thing as upsets. If you said before the 2004 ALCS started, "I think the Red Sox will win the series," it wouldn't have been that outlandish. Red Sox 2004 was one of the greatest comebacks ever, but not one of the greatest upsets.

Basically, an upset isn't determined by someone's chances of winning during a game/series, it's determined by the chances going in/beforehand. At least, that's how I view it.

Pats-Rams from 2002 is definitely up there.

NYG def. Pats in 2007, same.

    Hampton beating Iowa State

USA in the Miracle on Ice

App State beating Michigan in 2007

    Buster beating Tyson

The Warriors beating the Sonics (I think?) in the 94 playoffs

Maybe even Mavs-Heat from 2011, but probably not the greatest or even close. But still a considerable upset.

    Dbacks-Yankees from 2001 and Marlins-Yankees from 2003 are up there, I'd say.

I consider it a upset, because a team shouldn't be winning a series when they are done two games to the opposite team. The Warriors were planning going to Disneyland before the series was over lol.

To me, that's a comeback, not an upset. I still think it was a considerable "upset" because the Warriors won 73 games, but not because it was 3-1.

To each it's own I guess Golden One. How about Serra KO'ing George St.Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Title in the First round, truly was an upset when St.Pierre was a 10-1 favorite and was unstoppable in the game at this point in MMA.

I'm with TGO...comebacks are different than upsets. Upsets are when the team or player has little to no chance according to anyone with eyes or the "experts." Comebacks happen in a series. They're not the same thing.

But if the series reaches a point where the pundits no longer give them a chance, IE the 04 Sox or the Cavaliers, does that not in turn make their comeback victory an upset as well?

I mean it's all semantics but I can see where they'd be coming from.

Truthfully I did say they could post ideas to talk about upsets in Sports outside the Busta/Tyson entry. Necro and I are probably the only three who follow Boxing religiously especially Necro. People forget in that Tyson fight with Douglas first time he was knocked down in his career, he got rocked here and there during his run, but never a Knock down truly impressive for Douglas to do that.
