Silk Loves Video Games (Ask Silk?)

Cards on the table, Silk's a huge fucking dork. I was born in 89 when the NES was in full swing, and there was already one in my house. My mom got it from a friend of ours to help deal with maternity leave I.E. distract my older brothers from being shitheads while she was angry and pregnant. Those two jerks had already beaten Super Mario Bros by the time I got out of the womb, but joke's on them, I was the first one to beat Donkey Kong Country a few years later (neither of them tried that hard).

Anyway, the point of all this is I've been a gaming person my whole life, have a lot of passion for that world that's come and gone over the years, but I've gotten full swing back into it the last few years and really just can't believe I ever strayed. Video games are cool, and I'm gonna finally embrace that and become the champion this subforum deserves.

So let's just consider this a tale of two threads. I'm gonna use it to occasionally review games I'm playing or have played, maybe taking some requests, or just comment on some development that's got my attention. If people care, this can also be an Ask Silk sort of situation, where if you really want to know what I think about some shit, just ask and I'll like, I dunno, answer it.

Welcome to Silk's Big Magical World of Games. Probably kick this off with a Pokemon Sun/Moon review, since I'm close to beating that sucker and it's all I'm playing lately.

I've only played 1, 4, 5, and Revelations 2. Thoughts are mixed. I generally dislike horror games/movies because being scared is not a sensation I like, so that combined with the clunky controls of Resi 1 really didn't do much for me back in the Playstation days.

Four is one of my favorite games ever, since I loved the atmosphere and the gameplay, and it wasn't TOO scary. Five was fun with a friend but I found it much less interesting narratively and felt it failed to capture the spark of the previous game. Revelations 2 was a neat game that didn't scare me too much, playing it co-op helped, and I also really enjoyed the raid modes or whatever they were called. Actually got way more mileage out of that title than I expected.

That would be a dream. Personally I got outta Pokemon around the time Diamond and Pearl games came out, so my favs would more towards the old school Pokemon. I burned the fuck outta my clear Yellow-Green Gameboy back in the day playing Blue, and don't get me started on my Pokemon League adventures at Toys "R" Us. Still have my 8 legit badges from the game that we gained from Card battles each win earned out 2 points and one for the loss.

For the most part the genre didn't phase me for years but I'll admit to falling hard for SMITE this past year. It's now almost certainly the game I play the most, I think thanks to it's unique (at the time) perspective on the genre, it's wide variety of characters for an easily attainable price, and the variety of game modes to help get away from the toxic 5v5 conquest once in a while. I've also been playing Heroes of the Storm lately and enjoying that too, but my heart belongs to Smite.

If he did he might well be the top prizefighter right now, but I think even in the Wii reboot of Punch-Out they were still falling off all the time. Seems it's his cross to bear.

I definitely never finished any TMNT game, spent a lot more time on the arcade game, but we did have the NES one in the house once in a while and it was pretty great. Haven't played Syndicate, will look into it.

Alola Ninetales is way better. Real talk I haven't used a Marowak on this current run so I can't say how good it is, but he looks neato. I'll definitely be getting a Switch because I'm a Nintendo mark and I get all their shit. My friend code's gone around a bit over the years so it's really your own fault you don't have it. I'll get back to you on that.

You should checkout Paragon and Gigantic. Both in open betas and interesting different and good looking takes on the genre.

I wasn't much for turn-based strategy as a youth but I'm learning to appreciate the series over the last year. The most I've played of any of them are I, IV, and X, and I've enjoyed but not beaten any of them. I'm really bad about starting games and not finishing them. Really interested in XV.

I've played Paragon and it didn't really do anything for me, I didn't care for the card system. Gigantic is something I'll make note of.

    Um, well, see, I....

I've never played them. Any of them. It's maybe the biggest series I have literally no exposure to.

BUT, I kinda wanna play. Let me turn Ask Silk back on you guys. Do I start with MGS one, or is this a jump in anywhere kind of situation?

Re: Silk Loves Video Games (Ask Silk?)

gotta start with MGS1 on PS1.

The story is very confusing and convoluted so really it probably doesn't matter but I'd say start from the first games. they are all for download on PS3.

So much so that there's an app on Ps3 thats like an encyclopedia for the series that tells you everything about each character and event or place. it came out with MGS4 so it kept out spoilers for that game but once you beat MGS4 it reads the save and unlocks those files.

Re: Silk Loves Video Games (Ask Silk?)

Either start with MGS1 or get Metal Gear on the NES first. Play them in release order. Avoid getting the MGS1 Gamecube remake, PS1 version is superior.

MGS1 isn't the start of the story but most people will have played that one first and worked through it, but MG1 and MG2 came out before it and are canon so up to you. But you can easily just read up on their plots and whatnot.

The story gets convoluted when you get to MGS4 but all the earlier games are relatively straightforward.
