    Being The Booker

    BEING THE BOOKER

Hello all. Some of you already know me, some of you know of me, and I’d like to say thank you for the warm welcome I’ve received since signing up here. Quite overwhelming and surprising to say the least. For those who don’t know who I am, fantasy booking has been a passion of mine - pretty much my main hobby and creative outlet - for over ten years.

On another forum in a land far, far away, I had a pretty successful, long running thread, spanning four WrestleManias. Long story short, that place is all but dead, and over the last while, the lack of activity there saw my own passion for this past time decrease to the point where I was thinking I was finished with booking. I mean, what’s the point of writing for an audience of zero? It’s a bit like the question about a tree falling in the woods…

So, upon seeing the hive of activity here, I found myself getting that *itch* again. And even though it feels like I’m cheating on a wife by posting in another forum - that old hag just doesn’t make me happy anymore. So, while it may be wisest to ‘think it over’ for a while before deciding if I can jump back in, it’s probably best that I strike while the iron is hot, before I talk myself out of it. That said, I'm really not used to writing opening posts in threads, so this post may not make a great first impression.

Starting fresh in a new environment, I should probably start a new project entirely. But any time I’ve ever tried to finish the ‘Being The Booker’ thread and start fresh, I’ve always been drawn back to the same thread - the only thread I‘ve ever truly found a right balance with. My problem? How to transfer a twelve year old thread (2004-2008 thread time) from one place to another and expect anyone to know what is going on?

Over the next few days or so, I’ll try and condense the history of the thread into a manageable post (maybe two … or three) and catch everyone that’s interested up to speed. In the meantime, I’ll continue to peruse the threads in the section. In addition, I’ve kept records of title changes, and profiles of each superstar currently on each roster, containing the majority of their most noteworthy moments/accomplishments/feuds over the years, and I‘ll include them also.

I've been a long time reading having found you a year ago, so I know you're a booker king among men and I can promise you people will be falling over themselves to offer feedback.

...Also hey look at that you're Irish. Nice to know that we lead the way in fantasy booking
The most amazing thing about this recent conversation is that I've learned AON is even more of a waste of space than I thought he was previously

No, I really don't. I really don't have the focus for it.

...But I don't get punched in the face repeatedly for a living, but I still get hyped when McGregor wins

    Fantasy Booking...MMA...Really what's the difference?

Interested to see how you do here Wolfy. The activity was one of my main draws here a few years ago and I ended up staying, becoming mod and then smod. Always was a fan of your work, especially your most recent storylines so seeing it here is great. Have fun, enjoy the activity and I've no doubt you'll be winning multiple BTBOTM awards.

    BEING THE BOOKER

    ~ JANUARY 1 2004 - MARCH 20 2005 ~

January began with the Royal Rumble as always where John Cena sprung a mighty surprise, winning the Royal Rumble match, last eliminating the #30 entrant Goldberg. Also on the card, Shawn Michaels outlasted Triple H in a Last Man Standing match to win his fifth World Title.

Between January and WrestleMania, The Rock returns from Hollywood and screws John Cena out of his WrestleMania title shot at No Way Out, looking to clip the wings of the breakout star. Goldberg wins the match after defecting from Raw to Smackdown, and earns the shot against Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.

Intercontinental Champion Randy Orton wins a 16 man tournament to earn a title shot against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XX. On the Road to WrestleMania, Mick Foley resurfaces after being run out of Raw by Evolution at the tail end of 2003, and costs Orton his I.C Title, and also Flair & Batista of the tag titles. It results in Triple H stepping up to face Foley at WrestleMania.

Also, after losing his position as GM back in November, Steve Austin re-appears, much to the chagrin of Mr. McMahon, who vows to put an end to the Austin era, once and for all - HIMSELF - at WrestleMania…

    ---

    WRESTLEMANIA XX

March 14 2004 - New York City, NY

Haas & Benjamin defeat Dudley Boyz in a tag champions vs. tag champions table match for supremacy.

    Kurt Angle w/Chavo Guerrero def. Eddy Guerrero w/Randy Savage {returning for one night only}

Lita def. Jazz to become Womens champion.

Chris Jericho and Christian are the final two in a Battle royal for the Intercontinental Championship when Trish turns on Jericho by distracting the ref as he tosses Christian out of the ring. She then nails him with the title belt and Jericho is easily eliminated as Trish and Christian celebrate.

Rey Mysterio retains the Cruiserweight title against Billy Kidman clean. Afterwards they shake hands but Kidman is visibly frustrated.

The Undertaker returns as the Deadman, and beats Kane in a bloody Casket match.

Triple H beats Mick Foley in an I Quit Man after the referee stops the match due to loss of consciousness after 3 Pedigrees and multiple Sledgehammer shots.

HBK retains against Orton in a Ladder Match after Flair and Batista are beaten off by Michaels.

John Cena def The Rock. After kicking out of a chain shot to the head, he beats Rock with his own Rock Bottom.

Steve Austin def. Mr. McMahon despite interference from BRET HART. Hart entered looking to attack Vince but turned on Austin instead. However, despite the shocking interference from Hart, Austin rallied and won via the Stunner.

Brock Lesnar beat Goldberg in a physical war with an F5 and - after the previous years near fatal botch - a successful Shooting Star.

    ---

In the immediate aftermath of WrestleMania, Mr. McMahon made wholesale changes to Raw and Smackdown, firing Bischoff and Heyman as General Managers, introducing new General Managers to both shows - Mick Foley on Raw and Bret Hart on Smackdown. He also fired Steve Austin and a host of other mid card stars. However, being fired doesn’t stop the Rattlesnake from causing carnage over the coming weeks on Smackdown, ruining Bret Harts first period as General Manager.

Foley made an immediate impact, starting his tenure as GM with a match that saw the beginning of the end of his previous run as Commissioner; booking a 6 Man Hell in a Cell match at Backlash for the World Championship. He also re-introduced the Hardcore Championship and booked Ric Flair against his first Raw signee … STING.

On Raw, the young team of Garrison Cade & Mark Jindrak win the World Tag Team Titles, whilst the first signs of dissention begin to show in Evolution, and to make matters worse, Randy Orton is named along with Triple H in the Backlash title match. Triple H refers to Orton as his ‘back up’ in the Cell … but Orton isn’t so keen on that idea. Also, Theodore Long forms a stable called ‘The Brotherhood’ with Rodney Mack, Orlando Jordan and Jazz.

Between WrestleMania and Judgment Day on Smackdown, Billy Kidman turns heel on Rey Mysterio to capture the Cruiserweight Title, and the feud between Lesnar and Goldberg for the WWE Title rages on. However, Austin dominates the headlines, invading Smackdown each and every week, until Vince finally caves in - giving Austin one match to win his job back at Judgment Day which is coined a Judge (Bret Hart serving as guest referee), Jury (lumberjacks surrounding the ring) and Executioner (Mr. McMahon) match.

    BACKLASH 2004

    April 11 2004 - Phoenix AZ

Cade & Jindrak defeat The Dudley Boys to retain the World Tag Team Titles

Matt Morgan wins a 15 minute, 15 man Hardcore Iron Man Match to win the returning Hardcore Title.

Booker T & Goldust defeat Test & Scott Steiner

Lita w/Matt Hardy defeats Victoria w/Stevie Richards & Jazz w/Theodore Long to retain the Womens title.

Sting wins his debut match against Ric Flair in a No DQ affair.

Christian retains the Intercontinental Title against Chris Jericho. It looks like Jericho is about to overcome the odds of Christian and Trish, when EDGE makes his return from injury after a year out, and reunites with Christian, screwing Jericho out of the title again.

In the 6 man Hell in the Cell main event, Randy Orton becomes the youngest world champion in history, defeating Shawn Michaels, Triple H, RVD, Kane & The Undertaker in a huge upset.

    ---

    JUDGMENT DAY 2004

    May 16 2004 - Corpus Christi, TX

Rey Mysterio recaptures the Cruiserweight Championship from Billy Kidman in the opener.

    Hardcore Holly defeats Zach Gowen

The Worlds Greatest Tag Team retain the WWE Tag Team Titles against the APA

Kanyon remarkably defeats The Big Show to retain the United States Title

Eddie Guerrero, teaming with Chris Benoit, ends his rivalry with Chavo Guerrero and Kurt Angle in a tag team affair.

John Cena once again upstages The Rock, defeating The Great One in a WrestleMania rematch.

Brock Lesnar retains the WWE Championship against Goldberg, using Goldbergs own Jackhammer in the process to put him away once and for all.

In the main event, what will be later referred to as the ‘Corpus Christi Screwjob’ goes down, with BROCK LESNAR joining late on as a lumberjack at the behest of Vince, beating down Austin, and allowing McMahon to apply a Sharpshooter … and Bret calls for the bell.

    ---

In the aftermath of Backlash, the fractious relationship between the leader of Evolution (Triple H) and his underling - the new World Champion - Randy Orton continues to cause problems for the group. The Game attempts to cajole Orton into ‘lying down’ for him, telling Orton he’ll get his time as champion - but he isn’t ready yet. Orton doesn’t go through with it though, and in a title match, when Orton lies down, Triple H goes for his pin - but is cradled and Orton retains.

In the weeks that follow, Ric Flair tries to keep the tensions from bubbling over, but Triple H cant accept the fact that his understudy is holding the World Title, and he isn’t. The Game eventually earns a title opportunity at Bad Blood.

The Brotherhood try to recruit Booker T, helping him to victories - but he isn’t interested in linking up with Theodore Long and his group … despite their meddling leading him to a World Title match. And, after weeks of Booker rejecting The Brotherhood, the group cost him the title against Orton, teaching Booker a lesson for turning them down.

For a short period of time, The Brothers of Destruction reunite, branching off into a feud with Shawn Michaels, who is later joined by RVD. Elsewhere, Edge and Christian roll back the years as a tandem, making Chris Jerichos life a misery - but Jericho gets some measure of revenge, screwing Christian out of the Intercontinental title. However, for Trish, there is something to celebrate - she wins the Womens title from Lita.

On Smackdown, Brock Lesnar refers to Austin walking out on the WWE in 2002, saying he’s now run Stone Cold out of the company twice, and as a thank you from the boss, Vince re-hires Paul Heyman as Lesnars manager. Just as Vince thinks he has rid his company of a menace in Austin … John Cena makes a point of raising the ire of the Chairman, taking the mantle left behind by Austin.

One of the Lumberjacks from the match at Judgment Day - Kurt Angle - begins to show remorse for his actions, and apologises for costing Austin his job … and turns his focus on reclaiming the WWE title from Brock Lesnar.

McMahon tries to shut Cena down, with Bret Hart placing Cena in a number of handicap matches and multiple matches in one night, before setting Brock Lesnar on the upstart. That backfires, as Cena - in retaliation for weeks of attacks - screws Brock Lesnar out of the WWE Title, helping Angle win the title he had lost to Brock back in September of ‘03.

On the same night, La Resistance win the WWE Tag Team Titles from Haas & Benjamin. Elsewhere, William Regal returns from his long lay-off as a Smackdown roster member, immediately targeting Kanyon and the U.S Title, looking to add some class to the title and the country it represents.

Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit come to blows over this period, as the friends each have their eyes on the WWE Title, but it’s Benoit that wins out, earning a shot at Angle and GM Bret Hart, appreciating both mens skills, gives them the opportunity to put on a match for the ages, booking their Vengeance title match as a 60 Minute Iron Man match.

    ---

On the road to Summerslam, Triple H goes down with an injury, bringing an abrupt halt to the Evolution break up angle. With The Game gone, Orton takes on the role of leader. The Undertaker is taken out of commission on Raw by the World Champion & Evolution, with Orton playing up to his ’legend killer’ moniker. During this time, tensions between Orton and the GM Mick Foley begin to surface again, with Orton believing Foley is trying to screw him over.

Booker T brought an end to his rivalry with The Brotherhood emphatically, by getting a match with Theodore Long and punishing Long for his actions. Sting captured the Intercontinental title, and Raven would capture the Hardcore title, only for Rhyno to win it from him a few weeks later. Also, Edge and Christian once again won a World Tag Team title, and Kane put Shawn Michaels on the shelf as their rivalry intensified.

Chris Jericho wins a Battle Royal to earn a Summerslam title shot, and vows to make up for his loss in the SkyDome at WrestleMania X8 by winning the title in the same stadium at Summerslam.

On Smackdown, a determined John Cena overcomes the odds to book himself a showdown with Brock Lesnar at Summerslam, winning a Gauntlet, which culminates with him beating Mr. McMahon!!

Over the coming weeks, Bret Hart begins to distance himself from McMahon, challenging Vince on calls, and reminding Vince that HE is the GM and makes the matches - not McMahon. And on occasion changes a handicap match Vince tried to book with a tag match instead. It culminates with Bret Hart manipulating the contract for the Lesnar vs. Cena Summerslam match, not informing Vince until after the papers are signed that if Cena wins - Vince is barred from Smackdown.

Chavo Guerrero defeats Rey Mysterio for the Cruiserweight title, whilst Angle and Goldberg built anticipation for their first ever meeting, and tension builds between the pair as the PPV draws near.

Edge & Christian defeat Booker T & Goldust to retain the World Tag Team Championships.

Chris Jericho becomes the NEW World Heavyweight Champion, submitting Randy Orton in the Walls of Jericho to win the title back in the same stadium he lost it two years ago. Controversially though, it was thanks to interference from Raw GM Mick Foley, who had warned Orton he wouldn’t tolerate any outside help from Flair or Batista.

In the main event, Goldberg defeats Kurt Angle in the Dream Match to become WWE Champion.

    ---

As part of the new regime in March, Bret Hart & Mick Foley agreed to a new PPV concept; using the old Clash of the Champions name, it would be a Raw versus Smackdown event, set to be held in September, replacing Unforgiven. It would feature World Champion vs. WWE Champion, I.C Champion vs. U.S Champ, Tag Champs vs. Tag Champs, plus a 10 Man Tag, and a match of Mr. McMahons choosing, pitting a Raw superstar against a Smackdown superstar.

In addition, Womens Champion Trish Stratus issued an open challenge to any female on the Smackdown roster - and there is fierce competition on Smackdown for that opportunity, with Torrie Wilson winning the day.

Off the back of Summerslam, hostilities grew between Mick Foley and Evolution, with Randy Orton giving Foley an RKO when denied an immediate title rematch - and Orton then begins to target a match with Foley. Despite the animosity, Foley still selects Orton as part of his five man team for the 10 man tag at Clash of the Champions.

Orton though, does his best to create chaos, giving J.R an RKO during an in ring ceremony for the commentator in Oklahoma, as he tries to pressure Foley into fighting him, declaring he wont stop until Foley accepts his challenge. Shawn Michaels - another Raw member of the 10 man tag match - takes umbrage with Ortons actions, telling him to put his differences - like he has with Kane - with Foley aside until after the event for the good of Raw.

On Smackdown, Angle and Goldberg showed grudging rematch to one another after their battle at Summerslam, but Angle made it clear that the outcome would be different when they met again. Goldberg and Angle face off again, but with Brock Lesnar also included in a triple threat match - where Goldberg retains by pinning Lesnar.

Test & Scott Steiner jump ship to Smackdown, and as a result, the Dudley Boys challenge them to a tables match at the Raw vs. Smackdown PPV. Also, The Hurricane & Lance Storm stun La Resistance to win the WWE Tag Team Titles.

As on Raw, the five men selected for Bret Harts team in the 10 man tag have their issues, with ego’s getting in the way, but Kurt Angle tries to be a leader, and attempts to being the hostile team together. However, the team come to blows on the final edition of Smackdown before the show … and a trio of Raw stars; Michaels, Booker T & RVD watch in glee as their opponents fall apart at the seams.

And, after being banished from Smackdown, Mr. McMahon surfaces on Raw, goading Bret Hart, challenging him to a match. Hart responds on Smackdown, reminding everyone of his medical status … but cant help himself in challenging Vince to a fight - but not at Clash of the Champions - but at the event where all their animosity began; Survivor Series.

    CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS 2004

Test & Scott Steiner beat The Dudley Boys at their own game in a Tables match, putting daylight between Raw and Smackdown.

In the ‘McMahon’s Choice’ match, Ric Flair gets Raw back in the win column, defeating William Regal in a Submission match.

Then, in a shocking outcome, TRIPLE H returns, and screws Goldberg in the Champion vs. Champion match, handing Chris Jericho the victory, tying everything up going into the main event.

Team Smackdown; Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, Eddie Guerrero, John Cena & Big Show defeat Team Raw; Shawn Michaels, Kane, Randy Orton, Booker T & RVD in the main event, when Orton turns on his own team, hitting an RKO on Michaels, right in front of a watching Mick Foley, handing Smackdown the overall win, 5-4.

    ---

The next stop would be another join brand PPV, entitled Nemesis - designed to bring an end to many long running rivalries. Mick Foley finally cracked after Ortons actions at the Clash of the Champions and accepted Randy Ortons challenge to a match, and declared it would be a Streetfight.

Eric Bischoff would also resurface, now using his skills as a manager for Matt Morgan, looking to control Morgans temper and guide him up through the ranks on Raw. Meanwhile, RVD would defeat Rhyno to win the Hardcore title. Edge and Christian would put Goldust on the shelf, leaving Booker T to deal with both men in the lead up to a cage match for the tag titles, as he waited for Goldust to return.

On Smackdown, it is revealed that Triple H had signed with Smackdown, and his attack on Goldberg was simply done in order to get the attention of his adversary, as he eyed another WWE Title reign. And, his plan worked, as a pumped up Goldberg accepted his challenge.

Elsewhere, Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar relit the fuse of their rivalry off the back of Angle being named the COTC MVP - which entitled him to a title match in the future; a decision that didn’t please Lesnar - with the two men agreeing to finish it once and for all at the upcoming PPV.

William Regal cost Chris Benoit the U.S Title, with their rivalry set to come to a head at the PPV, and The Amazon, Shaniqua dumped the Basham Brothers and jumped to Raw. Test and Scott Steiner turned their attentions to John Cena, carrying out a number of two on one attacks, leading to an unlikely save from a returning Rock, who would join forces with Cena to face the pair at Nemesis.

Brock Lesnar defeats Kurt Angle in a bloody Chain Match, bringing their year and a half long rivalry to a finite ending.

Chris Jericho retains the World Heavyweight Championship against Shawn Michaels, but doesn’t win the match. Instead, both men’s shoulders are on the mat, resulting in a double pin and a lot of confusion.

The dream team of The Rock & John Cena defeat Test & Scott Steiner.

Randy Orton defeats Mick Foley (in what was essentially an homage to their actual 2004 match) in a brutal Streetfight.

And, in the main event, Triple H becomes the NEW WWE Champion, beating Goldberg in a Last Man Standing match, thanks to help from a few old friends; Ric Flair & Batista.

    ---

The Road to Survivor Series kicked off with a bang, as Raw welcomed it’s newest signee; JOHN CENA. Cena immediately targeted Evolution, and would find allies in Booker T and Goldust as they joined forces to build a Survivor Series team. Randy Orton though, was more concerned with winning back the World title. With Michaels and Jericho both claiming ownership of the title, it set up an intriguing triple threat match at the Survivor Series.

Edge and Christian dumped Trish, and she would also lose the Womens title to the physically imposing Shaniqua, who would begin an incredible title reign of dominance. Sting would also drop the Intercontinental title to Matt Morgan, thanks to the influence of Eric Bischoff.

Off the back of a dominating win over the Dudleys at Nemesis, Kane continued to rip through the Raw roster on a path of destruction. Raven would step up, challenging Kane to a No DQ match.

Over on Smackdown, with a list of contenders lining up to face Triple H, Bret Hart delivered a bombshell; the WWE Title would be defended in an Elimination Chamber match at Survivor Series. Off the strength of his win at Nemesis, Lesnar was included, whilst Angle already had a title shot promised to him. The Rock was included, Goldberg had a rematch lined up and Big Show completed the group by winning a Fatal Four Way.

Chris Benoit and William Regal continued their feud, and both men would assemble a team to meet at the Survivor Series. Also, The Basham Brothers ended a long losing streak by WINNING the WWE Tag Team Titles. Chavo Guerrero screwed Hurricane and Lance Storm, as he tried to get one up on his challenger at the Survivor Series.

The big feud though, was between Mr. McMahon and Bret Hart. They signed their contract, with Bret wanting No DQ, demanding that Earl Hebner NOT be the official, and also requested that anyone guilty of interfering would be fired immediately. Vince then declared that he didn’t want Bret to be fired WHEN he loses - because it’ll bring him greater satisfaction for Bret to QUIT in shame when he loses to Vince.

    SURVIVOR SERIES 2004

    November 14 2004 - Chicago Il

Shaniqua destroyed Lita to retain the Womens Champion.

The Hurricane defeats Chavo Guerrero to become the NEW Cruiserweight Champion.

Team Thuganomics {Cena, Booker T, Goldust, Sting & RVD} defeat Team Evolution {Flair, Batista, Edge, Christian & Matt Morgan}, with Cena the sole survivor, overcoming Edge and Batista at the end to survive.

In the Elimination Chamber, Triple H overcomes the odds to retain the title. The Rock and Big Show are the first two men the start the match, with Lesnar joining after the first interval. Big Show is eliminated by The Rock before Kurt Angle becomes entry #4. Goldberg enters next, and goes on a rampage, but is soon eliminated by Kurt Angle. Triple H gets the best draw, and it comes down to The Game and The Rock after Angle and Lesnar are eliminated. Triple H outlasts The Rock - who had started the match - and retains the title.

Randy Orton becomes a TWO TIME World Champion, winning the triple threat match against Jericho and Shawn Michaels.

In the only match that could headline the show, it’s 7 Years in the Making - and Bret Hardt finally exacts revenge on Mr. McMahon, submitting him in the Sharpshooter.

    ---

The celebrations wouldn’t last long for Randy Orton on Raw. Throughout the next month, he would be plagued with creepy messages - seemingly from The Undertaker - as the voice would state that “the dead will rise”. But that wasn’t all Orton had to contend with - Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels were both still in the hunt for the title. Jericho had his rematch, with Orton coming out unscathed, whilst Michaels lay in wait for a shot at Armageddon.

Kane turned his attention to John Cena, looking to destroy the rising star, Trish Stratus returned after a number of weeks, bravely looking for revenge against Edge and Christian for turning on her. Edge and Christian would show no mercy toward Trish, challenging her to a match - and unless she could find a partner, it would be 2 on 1. Surprisingly, it would be Chris Jericho that would step up, despite what Stratus had done to him earlier in the year - though Jericho insisted it was simply the right thing to do.

Bret Hart, moving on from the Mr. McMahon chapter, poured all his focus back into Smackdown, and looked to counter Raws PPV with a PPV worthy line up of his own on Smackdown, building to a ‘Night of Champions’ where all the Smackdown titles would be up for grabs, with a tournament set up to determined the #1 Contender for the WWE title.

In the tournament, The Rock beat The Big Show, Eddie Guerrero defeated William Regal, Brock Lesnar saw off Chris Benoit, and Kurt Angle beat an already injured Goldberg for the second time in a week to progress. In the semi-finals, Kurt Angle defeated Brock Lesnar and Eddie Guerrero scored a win over The Rock (albeit thanks to interference from Triple H), before Angle earned the title shot, beating Guerrero - with Triple H again involving himself in the match. Triple H would later explain his reasons for his interference; he hates The Rock, and didn’t feel Eddie was worthy of a title shot.

In addition to that, the highly touted team of Americas Most Wanted would sign with the WWE and vignettes would air, hyping their debut, and they arrived with a bang, defeating former champs La Resistance. Lance Storm began to become jealous of his partners - The Hurricane - success, and when Hurricane suggested they both focus on their singles careers instead of trying to win back the WWE Tag Titles, it prompted Storm to screw Hurricane out of his newly won Cruiserweight title against Chavo, and would reform his tag team with William Regal.

At the big ‘Night of Champions’ edition of Smackdown, Eddie Guerrero was rewarded with a U.S Title shot after coming up short in his quest for a WWE Title shot, and Latino Heat would overcome Kanyon to win the gold. Test & Scott Steiner became WWE Tag Team Champions after a tag team turmoil match - last defeating Smackdowns newest team AMW.

Then, in the main event, Triple H would retain the WWE Title against Kurt Angle - but thanks to the unlikeliest of people; Goldberg. This signalled a heel turn from Goldberg, who later explained his reasons, stating Angle didn’t care about him being injured when they fought a few weeks earlier - and turned on the fans for not caring about him either.

    ARMAGEDDON 2004

    Sting defeated Rhyno.

In a Fatal Four Way, Shaniqua defeated Lita, Jazz & Victoria to retain the Womens Championship.

Edge & Christian defeated the inter-gender team of Chris Jericho & Trish Stratus, with Jericho saving Trish from a Con-Chair-To, only to receive it himself.

John Cena remained undefeated since moving to Raw, beating the Big Red Machine, Kane.

NEW World Tag Team Champions were crowned, as Ric Flair & Batista became two-time champions by dethroning Booker T & Goldust.

Randy Orton defeated Shawn Michaels to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

The Undertaker then finally returned. He Chokeslammed Orton, but Evolution would save Orton from any further punishment, which left Shawn Michaels to be made an example of by The Undertaker, who sent a message to Orton, putting HBK through the announce table.

    ---

As the calendar turned to 2005, all focus switched to the Royal Rumble and the Road to WrestleMania. The Undertaker continued to pursue Randy Orton, with Shawn Michaels injured by the attack from The Undertaker. Mick Foley, looking to make sure the eventual Undertaker/Orton match wouldn’t have Evolution interfere, booked a match he knew only too well; a Hell in a Cell match at the Royal Rumble. Naturally, Orton was living in fear, facing the sternest challenge of his career, with reminders from all sides of the damage that The Undertaker has inflicted inside the demonic structure through the years.

Kane and John Cena’s rivalry culminated in a No DQ rubber match, after Kane inflicted Cena’s first loss since coming to Raw, where Cena would end the rivalry, defeating The Big Red Machine once and for all, giving him plenty of momentum heading into the Royal Rumble match, as Cena aimed to win back to back Rumbles.

Chris Jericho would continue to feud with Edge and Christian, with the pair claiming Jericho still had feelings for Trish after taking the hit for her at Armageddon. Jericho denied the accusations, and he would shut the pair up with a tag team win just before the PPV.

Rumours began to circle that STONE COLD STEVE AUSTIN had purchased ringside tickets for the Royal Rumble, which was being held in Texas. This rumour angered Brock Lesnar, who tried to make sure Austin would be barred from the building - but Bret Hart would let him know he couldn’t prevent a civilian from attending the show.

Meanwhile, the new U.S Champion Eddie Guerrero would emerge as the next top contender for the WWE Championship. Triple H would mock the credentials of Guerrero, but Latino Heat would give The Game plenty to think about, defeating him in two tag matches in the run up to the show.

On Smackdown, The Rock was homing in on the Rumble match too, as he aimed to get back at Triple H, declaring that if Eddie Guerrero couldn’t win the title, then he would dethrone The Game at WrestleMania.

    ROYAL RUMBLE 2005

    January 23 2005 - Houston TX

Matt Morgan retained the Intercontinental Title against Matt Hardy

Americas Most Wanted win their first WWE Tag Team Championship within two months of their debut, winning a four corners match against the champions; Test & Steiner, the APA and La Resistance.

Rob Van Dam defeats Raven in a Hardcore match for a place in the Royal Rumble match.

Triple H retains the WWE Championship against the U.S Champion Eddie Guerrero, but has to use the ropes to leverage a three count.

Inside Hell in a Cell, Randy Orton overcomes The Undertaker to retain the World Heavyweight Championship thanks to a run-in from Shawn Michaels, who broke into the structure to screw over The Deadman, getting a measure of revenge for what happened at Armageddon.

John Cena, entering at Number 17, would go on to win his second Royal Rumble. Cena, Angle, Sting and Goldberg would be the final four, with Cena and Goldberg the final two - as it was in 2004, and again, Cena would be the victor.

During the match, Stone Cold Steve Austin DID make his return, crashing the arena in his pick-up truck, and screwing over Brock Lesnar.

    ---

The Road to WrestleMania then kicked into high gear. John Cena, got his journey started with a win in a handicap match against Edge & Christian - although the former tag champions did themselves no favours, with a number of mishaps.

Cena would keep racking up the wins, whilst his WrestleMania opponent, Randy Orton, missed the next few weeks, recuperating from the beating he suffered inside Hell in a Cell at the Royal Rumble. But Orton wouldn’t get a free ride to WrestleMania, and would have to defend his title first, against the Icon Sting, where Orton toughed it out and retained the title to make the WrestleMania main event official.

Meanwhile, in addition to turning his back on the fans and turning heel, Shawn Michaels revealed his reasons for costing The Undertaker at the Royal Rumble. Going back to 1998, he stated he was still bitter about losing four years of his career because of The Deadman, and after what happened at Armageddon, The Undertaker nearly put him out for good - but now, it was time for revenge.

Following the loss to Cena, Edge and Christians problems continued. More miscommunication cost them their tag team title shot against Batista and Ric Flair, but Edge would have success on his own, dethroning Matt Morgan as Intercontinental Champion. Christian though, would oddly refer to both Edge and himself as the I.C Champion.

The Hardcore title changed hands, with Raven becoming the new champion, whilst Kane developed an obsession with Trish Stratus. After Trish rejected his advances, Kane went on the warpath, torturing Trish, with Chris Jericho again being the unlikely saviour for Trish. Also, Matt Hardy was traded to Smackdown, with A-Train moving in the opposite direction.

On Smackdown, Brock Lesnar demanded that Steve Austin be reinstated, in order for him to drive Stone Cold out of the WWE once and for all. After weeks of the Board of Directors refusing, they finally relented, and allowed Austin to attend No Way Out - but that he wouldn’t be under contract.

    NO WAY OUT 2005

The Big Show defeated Chris Benoit

Tajiri beat Chavo Guerrero to become the NEW Cruiserweight Champion.

The Worlds Greatest Tag Team became #1 Contenders for the WWE Tag Team Titles, defeating Rikishi & Scotty Too Hotty.

The Rock won an 8 man Rumble match to earn a shot at the WWE Champion at WrestleMania. The match came down to The Rock and Brock Lesnar, and the music of Stone Cold Steve Austin caused a distraction that helped Rock eliminate Lesnar. Austin didn’t show, and Lesnar was left fuming, whilst The Rock was on his way to WrestleMania.

In the main event, Triple H defeated Eddie Guerrero to retain the WWE Championship after a sustained assault on the knee of Guerrero softened the challenger up.

    ---

With WrestleMania on the horizon, the two fastest rising stars in the WWE embarked on the opening chapter of their rivalry; Royal Rumble winner John Cena and World Champion Randy Orton finally came to blows, in the run up to the ‘youngest main event in WrestleMania history’, with a new era seemingly on the horizon. Cena would stamp his credentials with wins over both Flair and Batista in the weeks preceding the event. And Orton, finally standing on his own two feet, declared he would face Cena alone - barring Evolution from joining him at ringside.

Edge and Christian would be torn apart, with Christian turning on Edge. Edge - due to defend his title on Raw - would be found unconscious. Christian then offered to defend the I.C title on his behalf, and after successfully retaining the title, it was revealed that Christian WASN’T defending the title FOR Edge … he won it, due to the title technically being forfeited by the previous champion; something Christian knew all along.

The Austin-Lesnar saga would dominate Smackdown, with a match between the two finally being signed at WrestleMania. Bret Hart would place himself in Austins corner to make sure Paul Heyman couldn’t interfere.

In a twist though, Mr. McMahon would be allowed to return to Smackdown, assigning himself as the special guest referee for the match at WrestleMania, declaring that he could be the only one to make the count - and that unlike in the past (Over The Edge 98) he has to be in control of his functions for the fall to count.

Chris Benoit booked a date with Eddie Guerrero at WrestleMania after beating the Big Show (who would be later released), with the two long time friends set to collide over the U.S Title.

In a Three Stages of Hell match, Christian retained the Intercontinental Title against Edge. Winning the opening fall, before Edge levelled the match in a Strap Match, before Christian won the decisive ladder match, thanks to a large man - who would later be revealed as Tyson Tomko.

Sting won a dual brand Battle Royal, which also involved two guest legends; The Honky Tonk Man & Ricky Steamboat.

Chavo Guerrero once again became Cruiserweight Champion, winning a six pack challenge which featured the champion Tajiri, Rey Mysterio, Jamie Noble, Akio and Paul London.

The Undertaker remained undefeated at WrestleMania by defeating Shawn Michaels.

The Rock won his tenth world title, defeating Triple H for the WWE Championship.

Stone Cold Steve Austin defeated Brock Lesnar. The finish came with Bret Hart getting involved, placing Mr. McMahon in the Sharpshooter, which forced Vince to tap the mat three times - counting the fall for Austin.

In the Youngest Main Event in WrestleMania history, the 2005 Royal Rumble winner, John Cena, ended the second reign of Randy Ortons career, and won his first World Heavyweight Championship to close the show.

That wraps up part one. I think it’ll be best to break this up over each year. From looking back, there were far too many title changes in the first year of the thread, and far too many main event matches ending with interference. I guess in 2004, I was still getting over the Attitude Era, and part of me was probably still wanting to recapture that feeling. I think it’ll become more noticeable in the next post that I did move away from that kind of booking, and I believe the 05-06 era of the thread was probably the peak for me.

Also, I’m massively astounded at the response the opening of this thread has had. I just hope I’m able to live up to this kind of response. Hopefully, you’re not all too disappointed.
