The 100 Greatest WWE Matches (2006-2016)

It's time for another one of Shock's projects. Can he stick with this one or will the prospect of more HBK drive him away?

This is once again my own vanity project where I count down my 100 greatest WWE matches from 1st January 2006 until today, 19th September 2016. This has taken ages of drafting a shortlist, rewatching, trying to find forgotten gems, just for me to get to a top 100 that I was happy with, and this isn't going to be posted in a random order. Rather I am literally counting down all the way to my number 1 match of the last 10 years. In each entry, I will talk about why I enjoyed the match, why I ranked it where I did, what sort of legacy the match holds, and then leave a few similar matches to recommend.

WWE in the last ten years has provided us with some truly incredible matches and I've always been one for enjoying the shitty side of wrestling, but I feel like we should celebrate the sheer amount of quality content that is afforded to us, especially in the Network era. Narrowing down to a list of 100 matches was a difficult but rewarding endeavor and a lot of good matches were cut - a lot of prominent and highly regarded matches. It may get to my number 1 match and you might realise "wait, where was this match on your list". Or you may get to my number 30 and think "wow, Shock, you're on crack if you think that is a top 100 match in WWE". As I said, a lot of cracking matches just missed out, from some highly regarded Cena matches in 2015 to the last match that dropped off the list (for those interested, it was Edge vs John Cena from Summerslam 2006).

I expect there to be controversy, disagreements, but ultimately I hope that this thread will be a great chance for us to celebrate when wrestling is good (because when wrestling is good, it's the fucking best), speculate what's going to come up - and for newer fans maybe a chance to find some matches they've never seen before.

This will start tomorrow, hope you all take part because it's going to be a long road to number 1.

Re: The 100 Greatest WWE Matches (2006-2016)

If you're not including Edge vs Cena at Summerslam 2006 then I really hope you're not including the overrated Unforgiven ladder match between those two.

I'll be checking this out. I started watching wrestling again in late 2006 after a 7 year break. Although I've stopped regularly watching the past two years I still check out anything that creates a buzz so I'll probably have an opinion on most matches.

TLC* , and that was one of my fav matches from 2006, don't see how it was overrated in any way personally.

In any case look forward to reading this Shock.

Big big project if the review length is gonna be similar style to your 30 day ones. Look forward to it, especially what gets listed between 2006-2009 because I wasn't watching WWE then and have only seen a few bits and pieces retrospectively.

Your sig would suggest NXT is included, if so I can see 2015 being one of the better represented years as it'll blitz any other year for women's matches before you even look at the men.

Man, one post in and no matches posted and I'm already getting pre-emptively called out! This is going to be a long thread

    Anyway, let's get started:

    #100

World Heavyweight Championship: CM Punk (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
    WWE Night of Champions 2009

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwfVwGigmSA

    Why I rated it #100

Quite simply, these two had a lot of chemistry together. And while this might be their least famous of their matches, it stands out as their best non-gimmick match and proves that the two could produce without said gimmick. This is another in a long line of quality matches that these two would give us through the middle of 2009 and the “new SmackDown Six” era.

Why this stands out to me is that - as well as the solid wrestling that we came to expect from this time period - was the story and character work. I love matches that manage to incorporate the story going into the match into the match itself and here was CM Punk trying to prove that he is so much better than Jeff Hardy because of their lifestyles. For example, the start of the match has Punk schooling Hardy with mat wrestling just to prove he is better. Then he gets far too cocky and tries the high risk (ironically what CM Punk puts down in the lead up to the match), which brings Jeff into the match. Spectacular storytelling. This is a fantastic performance by both, but particularly from Punk - his mannerisms are great here. And this was his first WWE main event as a fully fledged heel and he rose to the occasion. He had finally found his groove in 2009 as a great wrestler and character after a few shaky (not bad, but certainly not up to his high standards) first few years in WWE. Also, long-time forum readers will tell you what a big fan of Jeff Hardy I am. I think he’s incredibly underrated as a wrestler and – while he has some big flaws and his worst stuff is awful – the stuff he can produce at his best is fantastic, and I think WWE has sorely missed a Jeff Hardy character since 2009.

The match also benefits from a hot finishing sequence and a crowd that gets more and more invested in the match as it goes. Expect to see plenty more of these two wrestlers throughout the list.

What is the legacy of this match

Well, the match on its own doesn’t have much of a legacy to it. A title change is usually noteworthy but this was done in 2009 when the WWE were playing hot potato with the two world titles like it was WCW 2000. And at the time I remember a negative response to this from the ever-reactionary internet community because they feared that Punk’s push was being stopped (when in reality it was just another part of the ongoing story between the two). It’s also not a match that is talked about a lot – as I said, SmackDown in 2009 was producing so many good matches that it’s difficult for any to truly stand out. And as far as CM Punk and Jeff Hardy matches go, this is at best their third most famous match behind the Summerslam TLC match and the emotional cage match from SmackDown right afterwards.

That said, it’s a match that people will watch and straight away see the positives and see why someone could call it a great match. I think with the benefit of hindsight and seeing that the story had a really great conclusion that this deserves another objective look.

Re: The 100 Greatest WWE Matches (2006-2016)

I wouldn't say Punk was a fully fledged heel just yet, the following Smackdown with the beatdown on Jeff cemented it though. More of a tweener at this point.

Such a great period of time this, after 3 years Punk was finally able to flex his muscles as a character and we got this gold right off the bat.

I forgot the number of World title changes back during this period, and that's not counting the ECW title! Ridiculous.

Re: The 100 Greatest WWE Matches (2006-2016)

This was a great feud with great character work from both Punk and Hardy. It's a shame Punk kind of had the coolers put on him shortly after it was over. I don't have any recollection of a Hardy/Michaels match. Going to check that out. It'll be interesting to see who has the most matches on this list. I'm assuming Cena because of him being on top for the entire 10 years. Maybe Punk or even Bryan can claim that spot as well.

I'd say by this point he was properly a heel. Look at how he wrestles the main event, plus the promo he cut earlier in the show. All semblance of him being a face was gone by the time Night of Champions came along.

Re: The 100 Greatest WWE Matches (2006-2016)

Had never seen this match, just checked it out on the award winning WWE Network and enjoyed it. Excellent pacing and they didn't shoot their load, saving something up their sleeve for their upcoming gimmick matches. Having watched the intro to Night of Champions 2009 where the show was eight title matches, I think the past might be about to repeat itself because nine title matches are going to become the norm for big shows like Wrestlemania and Summerslam.

Wrestler with the most matches on the list: It should be Cena given the bulk of main events he's worked, but I know you're not keen on his current work so I'm gonna take a brave punt with Roman Reigns given the ridiculous amount of times he can appear in Shield tag and trios matches and I know you love his PPV singles matches more than Seth and Dean's. I at least see Reigns being in the conversation with Cena, Punk, Bryan etc

Year with the most matches on the list: Had a quick scan through the ppv's from '06 to '16 and I reckon 2015 has the best chance w/NXT but it'll be tight.

The #1 Match: Shawn Michaels Vs The Undertaker Wrestlemania 26 just because it's mine and I can't see how the legacy of that match has been hurt as HBK hasn't wrestled since.

Re: The 100 Greatest WWE Matches (2006-2016)

I remember watching that Hardy vs. CM Punk match from Night of Champions the day after it happened. I was rooting for Punk and was disappointed to see Hardy get the win but I suppose it was necessary to set up their next two matches. Nice pick to start out the list.

Wrestler with the most matches on the list: John Cena
Year with the most matches on the list: 2009
The #1 Match: Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels from WM 26

The 100 Greatest WWE Matches (2006-2016)

Not sure on the others but I'm going with Christian vs. Orton from Over the Edge 2011 as the number one match.

Hoping to see that Riley/Mysterio vs. Miz/Swagger tornado tag from Raw make the list.

Currently enjoying a plate of Pulpo Gallego via Tapastalk.

I'll go with Punk for the most matches.

2013 for the year. You had The Shield, Punk, and Bryan all at the top of their games.

My number one match would be Punk vs Lesnar from Summerslam '13. I'm going to say yours is Roman vs Brock from Wrestlemania 31.

I might have to watch every match you suggest in this Shock. That's a great match to get things started. I always loved Hardy taking on Punk.

I think either 2009 or 2013 gets represented the most from this list. And I'll have to rematch Punk/Hardy from NoC. I don't remember much from their program aside from the heel turn and the cage match.

WWE Championship: Falls Count Anywhere: The Miz (c) vs. John Morrison – WWE Raw, 3rd January 2011

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CGtBUO6UEbQ

    Why I rated it #99

Here’s something you might pick up over the next few weeks: I am a total sucker for falls count anywhere matches. I think they’re used sparingly enough to where the always feel fresh, and it allows for stuff like crowd brawling. In the late 90’s, these matches were much of a muchness and became pretty standard affair. But in the PG era it is rare and that makes them special.

This is really well worked and highlights both men’s strengths while not exposing their weaknesses. Let’s face it, Morrison versus Miz one-on-one would likely be a standard, inoffensive, but mediocre affair. But with the falls count anywhere stipulation they got to do some cool spots on the outside and mask any weaknesses they might have. This match never once got boring and was wrestled at a good pace. And it’s not just the stuff on the outside, but the work inside the ring worked really well as they wrestled a match based on counters (as former tag partners should!). The spots were well spaced out as well and all of them looked great. Stuff like Morrison jumping off the big W is a great visual. Even the simple stuff that Miz did like throw Morrison down the ramp looked painful. To top it all off, the finish was a great spot to close off the match as well.

What is the legacy of this match

John Morrison is a wrestler that had quite a bit of hype in the mid-late 00’s and he was a bit of a favourite to a lot of people. But he had a lot of doubters who questioned him as an overall wrestler - mostly his mic work and the spotty nature of his matches. Then came his feud with Sheamus and the doubters started to go away. He looked all set at the beginning of 2011 to make it to the main event on Raw to fill that Jeff Hardy void that was left in 2009 that I mentioned in the previous match. Unfortunately, poor booking, a shitty girlfriend shooting on a WWE legend, an injury, and his contract running down ultimately led to Morrison just kind of leaving WWE without realising the potential this match (and Lucha Underground) proved he had.

This one is rightfully looked back on fondly. Not only is it a match for the WWE Championship between two former tag team partners, but it’s considered one of the best TV matches of the last few years, and is generally regarded as Miz’s best title defence and one of the few times he’s treated as a proper champion. It’s also one of Morrison’s finest WWE outings as well and helped silence critics of both men.

    #98 Teaser

This is one of those "wait, these two had good chemistry together?" matches. This is a Nicky Talent special.
