    Overwatch

    OVERWATCH

Overwatch is a multiplayer first-person shooter video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It was released in May 2016 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Overwatch puts players into two teams of six, with each player selecting one of several pre-defined hero characters with unique movement, attributes, and skills; these heroes are divided into four classes: Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support.

Players on a team work together to secure and defend control points on a map and/or escort a payload across the map in a limited amount of time. Players gain cosmetic rewards that do not affect gameplay, such as characters skins and victory poses, as they continue to play in matches.

The game was launched with casual play, while Blizzard added competitive ranked play about a month after launch. Blizzard states that all Overwatch updates will remain free, with the only additional cost to players is through microtransactions to earn additional cosmetic rewards.
    Spoiler:

Overwatch is set sixty years into the future of fictionalized Earth, thirty years after the resolution of the "Omnic Crisis". Prior the Omnic Crisis, humanity had been in a golden age of prosperity and technology development. Humanity developed robots with artificial intelligence called "omnics" which were produced world-wide in automated "omnium" facilities and put to use to achieve economic equality. The Omnic Crisis began when the omniums started producing a series of lethal, hostile robots, which turned against humanity. The United Nations (UN) quickly formed Overwatch, an international task force to combat the Omnic threat and restore order.

Two veteran soldiers were put in charge of Overwatch; Gabriel Reyes and Jack Morrison. Though Overwatch successfully quelled the robotic uprising and brought a number of talented individuals to the forefront, a rift developed between Reyes and Morrison, and Morrison became the de-facto leader of Overwatch while Reyes took charge of Blackwatch, Overwatch's covert operations. Overwatch maintained peace across the world for several decades in what was called the "Overwatch Generation", but the rift between Morrison and Reyes intensified. Several allegations of wrongdoing and failures were leveled at Overwatch, leading to public outcry against the organization and in-fighting between its members, prompting the UN to investigate the situation. During this, an explosion destroyed Overwatch's headquarters, purportedly killing Morrison and Reyes among others. The UN passed the Petras Act, which dismantled Overwatch and forbade any Overwatch-type activity.

Overwatch is set some years after the Petras Act; without Overwatch, corporations have started to take over, fighting and terrorism have broken out in parts of the globe, and there are signs of a second Omnic Crisis occurring in Russia. Former members of Overwatch decide to reform Overwatch despite the Petras Act, recruiting old friends and gaining new allies in their fight.

<< Post reserved for strats and observations and junk. >>

So yeah... questions, comments, let's talk Overwatch.

I'm rocking prestige level 14* right now and eating shit in Competitive mode. Just a series of bad runs. Looking to put in some serious time toward ranking up this weekend.

I keep promising myself I will play more Reinhardt and familiarize myself with him but it's been competitive only lately and I don't want to screw everyone over. Junkrat, Hanzo, or Pharah for now, with some Lucio and Symmetra mixed in. Zarya is also pretty reliable.

What's competitive like? Do people play any smarter or are they all still brain dead?

As for Reinhardt all you need to know is shield. It regenerates when it's not active so when you're not taking fire drop it to boost it back up a bit. Charge is excellent to use in combination with his ult. Shatter them bitches and then try to line em up and charge them and it almost always results in multikills.

Playing a true tank version is hard sometimes because I've seen a lot of bastion players that didn't realize they could stay behind me and basically just merc everyone. So it depends a lot on your team being smart enough to actually stay behind you.

DVA is my favorite tank but Reinhardt is probably my second favorite.

Competitive is like drinking a smoothie full of delicious fruit and veg that uses warm garbage water as a base.

The people who play smarter play much smarter and the people who are brain dead are so bad it causes the smart players to start typing obscenities and then everyone fails.

It's not always like this. Sometimes that is what the opposing team experiences, and then you are free to celebrate with champagne and shrimp as you ice skate across their frozen tears (thanks Mei), but for the most part it all feels this frustrating when POINTS are on the line.

My rank seems stagnant but it's really that for all the wins I've gotten, they only increase rank incrementally, while the losses are like losing kidneys. I mean, it's possible that I'm only winning and losing against plebs, but I dunno. Seems like I should be losing less rank for being defeated by a solid team. Also sensing a very minor rift among my friends that are good at Overwatch and my friends that are "okay" (read: bad) at Overwatch as it pertains to Competitive... knew this would happen but wasn't ready for it to feel so real...

The biggest problem with Ranked so far, in my eyes, is people complaining about the team's lack of a certain role, and then not changing. For the same amount of time they chose to complain, they could have switched. That said, I am guilty of preferring to play Junkrat and get golds on damage and kills and actually fucking contribute versus playing a support class I am not that great at in a last-ditch effort to maintain team cohesiveness. Even then, the next round, the complainer or 'complainee' may just quit the match.

Competitive is definitely a mixed bag but I'm happy it's here and I know what I'm doing with my evening...

Reinhardt- That Ult/Charge combo is disgusting. Oh man. The sheer fear experienced when you're down on the ground looking at a charging Reinhardt. And then the cries of sheer gratitude as my Junkrat mine pops and pushes Reinhardt off course, saving 3-4 peeps. I think Reinhardt is one of those staples I see almost every game, I'm having a difficult time remembering the last game I played where he didn't play a prominent role. I definitely need to learn him more. Tried a round or two yesterday - I just get greedy with the hammer swings. Need to stop that. And Bastion/Reinhardt combo, for-fucking-get-about-it.

D.Va- Increasingly becoming one of my favorites. The never-ending stream of bullets is very welcoming to a mostly-Junkrat player, and the "flying push" helps when people have already picked Junkrat or Pharah or Lucio on the levels that allow you to throw people off maps.

My Symmetra game is getting pretty good. Not that it's rocket science, but I feel like I've mastered the charge shots (in tandem with her turrets) in terms of suppressing entire groups of people by myself. So far there is nothing quite as satisfying as dueling a Reaper as Symmetra and winning. I also use her spray that's a 'Caution' sign for turrets and pop that right under the turrets for lulz.

    Tis a great game.

    Re: Overwatch

Reinhardt does a shit ton of damage when swinging so it can be tempting. But you need to really isolate the enemies you try to kill. I play with a defensive push mindset. Meaning I push the payload and keep it going while also protecting my team from and during ults and enemies pushing us back. Doing this I still end up going 25-2 as an average. Once you stray off the path of being able to shield it opens you up to way more damage than you want.

Got back on the reaper train lately and was fucking dominating. Between reaper and DVA I had 3 perfect games of 20+ kills and 0 deaths and pulling in 4 golds per game. DIEDIEDIE

Just bought this from the PSN store.

Realllllly struggling to stay in a game at the moment. Im having to VPN to get into a server from China and it just is not working. Managed to play maybe 10 games in total and this shit is ridiculously fun. I'm obviously terrible because i can't consistently practise, but Reaper and Reinhardt are my go to bros of choice.

Im researching how to do it, but basically i think you can only connect to the Chinese server if you buy the Chinese version of the game. Fucking commies

    Re: Overwatch

Wow, does communication in this game ever make a difference. Played Competitive last night with 5 buddies (so full 6 man team) and even though at least two of them are kinda weak at the game, we demolished everything in our path utilizing good communication. It helped that they were willing to fill roles or perform tasks as designated by the more experienced players. Usually that sort of thing gets a nice "fuck off" from people online.

At one point we did a round with three Winstons and made a dedicated effort to keep a shield on the payload at all times, it was grand. If I thought this level of cohesion were possible without being on Skype with people, I would play Competitive solo more often. As it stands, I almost exclusively play with people I know.

Teamwork in Overwatch is sexy. Should go without saying, but you would be surprised how many lone wolves there are online. Though I suppose the case could be made that there could be more functionality toward 'suggesting' a class and things like that. As helpful as the small team build suggestions are on the right hand side, they're automated and can be inappropriate/misleading without considering the situation.

    Overwatch

I completely agree with your post on teamwork Natty. I've rarely had chances were we can get a full group of friends on at once because of conflicting schedules, but even having two or three people on the same page make a huge difference. This game is enjoyable, and really the only problem I frequently encounter are people who are stubborn about playing roles. I'm so tired of people picking Genji and rushing to their death all game while we are defending. Even though some people play like they just don't give a fuck, I try not to get too irritated because there's a good chance you may be playing a kid who's just trying to have fun.

i started playing overwatch on PC as part of a 3-man premade. went through the placement matches, was put in the low 50s. both of my friends are away for the summer but as the weakest player out of the 3, i decided to keep playing in the solo Q to get more experience.

today, ive bottomed out from the low 50s to 33.

    Must. Resist. Urge. To charge.

Put in a chunk of time with Reinhardt over the weekend and was very happy with the results. That Whiplash move or whatever it is actually called (could probably check the handy-dandy Heroes data I posted in this thread but soooo lazy) just wrecks entire worlds. If I am correct, it's only that and Symmetra's charged shots (with the exception of Ultimates) that can get through Reinhardt's shield. Pretty great. Also Reinhardt vs Reinhardt happens all the time and it's never dull. Love this game.

I keep fucking myself with him though, using the Charge, whooping all manner of ass, and then getting the Ultimate in a situation where it's the best possible choice but without a cooled-down Charge to follow up with.

Once I get the hang of that, I have a feeling I'm going to be a very happy Lionheart. Who needs gold guns when you already have a gold hammer?

    Re: Overwatch

Sorrynotsorry for double post, there's an update today for people who are playing on PC and can enable Public Test Region to try out the new digs (LINK).

Introducing Ana! (LINK) I'll be adding her to the Heroes list later this week but hopefully playing with her later today.

    Patch Notes

    Spoiler:

Please note that the below patch notes only include changes currrently available for testing on the PTR. While many of these changes will also be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in a future patch, the PTR is PC-only and therefore not all upcoming console

    PATCH FEATURES

    New Hero: Ana (Support)
After being out of the fight for several years, one of Overwatch's founding members is returning. Introducing Ana—a battle-scarred veteran who supports her teammates from a distance using a unique and highly specialized collection of weapons.

Ana’s primary weapon is her Biotic Rifle, which fires long-range darts that can restore the health of her allies or deal ongoing damage to her enemies. Meanwhile, her Biotic Grenade is perfect for a close-quarters clash, simultaneously healing teammates and injuring foes caught in its small area of effect. (Affected allies will also receive a temporary increase to all incoming healing, while affected enemies can’t be healed for a few moments.) And if the battle starts to get out of hand, Ana's sidearm can fire a Sleep Dart, knocking her adversaries unconscious.

Plus, Ana's ultimate ability, Nano Boost, empowers one of her teammates, granting faster movement, increased damage, and resistance to enemy attacks.

    GENERAL UPDATES

    Gameplay

    • If a match goes into Overtime for more than 20 seconds, the fuse will now start to "burn down" more quickly
    • Players now respawn more slowly during Overtime (increased spawn time by 2 seconds)

    Competitive Play

    • Competitive Play matches can now only have one of each hero per team.

    Miscellaneous

    • Added Ana as an AI-controlled hero in Practice vs. AI, Play vs. AI, and Custom Game modes
    • Timing on Zenyatta's Rapid Discord achievement is more lenient
    • Targeted teammates now respond by saying "I'm with you," when players use the “Group Up” communication
    • Renamed five sprays to avoid duplicate titles

    HERO BALANCE UPDATES

    General

Self-healing abilities now charge ultimate abilities. As a result, some heroes’ ultimate costs have been adjusted (see below).

    Bastion

    • Configuration: Tank
      • Ultimate cost increased by 10%

    D.Va

    • Defense Matrix
      • Cooldown decreased from 10 seconds to 1 second
      • A new resource meter has been added. This meter will deplete while Defense Matrix is active and then recharge when it’s not in use.
      • Defense Matrix takes 10 seconds to reach full charge from empty
      • At a full charge, Defense Matrix will last for 4 seconds
      • Defense Matrix will now remain active as long as its assigned hotkey is held
      • Defense Matrix has been reclassified as an alternate fire and is now bound to RMB (by default)
      • An option to “Toggle Defense Matrix” has been added under Options > Controls > D.Va

    • Self-Destruct
      • Ultimate cost decreased by 15%
      • Explosion delay reduced from 4 seconds to 3 seconds
      • Explosion no longer damages D.Va (the player who activates it)

Developer Notes: D.Va isn't being selected as often as our other tanks, and we feel a lot of that stems from the underperformance of her damage absorption abilities. So, we've reconfigured her Defensive Matrix, making it more flexible and giving players the ability to use it more often. We’ve also given Self-Destruct a little more oomph, because it felt slightly underwhelming when compared to many of Overwatch's other ultimate abilities.

    Lúcio

    • Sound Barrier
      • Ultimate cost increased by 10%

    McCree

    • Peacekeeper
      • Now maintains full damage at longer distances, but will deal less damage at extreme ranges

Developer Notes: While the game does feel better following the nerf to McCree’s close-range damage in a previous patch, it left him a little too weak. So, we're increasing his effective distance, making his range similar to Soldier: 76’s. This should hopefully give players another option for dealing with pesky long-range damage dealing heroes like Pharah and Hanzo.

    Mercy

    • Caduceus Staff
      • Damage Boost
      • Bonus damage increased from 30% to 50%
      • Effect will no longer stacks with bonus damage provided by another Mercy

    • Resurrect
      • Ultimate charge cost increased by 30%
      • Movement is no longer prevented during activation
      • Guardian Angel instantly resets upon use

Developer Notes: Mercy's ultimate is one of the most powerful abilities in the game; however, players would often fly into the fray and die while using it. With this update, Resurrect will now take a bit longer to charge, but Mercy will be a lot safer when activating the ability in the middle of combat. In addition, we always intended Mercy’s Damage Boost beam to be her primary method for dealing damage, but it often felt so weak that you were better off pulling out your blaster. To help address this, we've slightly increased its potency.

    Roadhog

    • Whole Hog
      • Ultimate cost increased by 45%

    Soldier: 76

    • Heavy Pulse Rifle
      • Spread recovery will begin after a short delay (rather than instantly)

    • Tactical Visor
      • Ultimate cost increased by 10%

    Zenyatta

    • Base shields increased by 50 (now 50 Health/150 Shield)
    • Orb of Discord and Orb of Harmony
      • Projectile speed has been increased from 30 to 120

    • Transcendence
      • Movement speed is now doubled upon activation
      • Healing amount increased from 200 to 300 health per second

Developer Notes: While Zenyatta has never had the healing abilities of Lúcio or Mercy, he made up for it by dealing more damage. However, his lack of mobility and low health has meant he’s struggled to find a place in many games. To increase his effectiveness, we've made several changes, the biggest of which is an increased shield pool. This will allow him to go head-to-head with more enemies. The Orb of Harmony and Discord changes are also a quality of life change, helping Zenyatta move his orbs around and apply their effects more quickly. And lastly, we’ve increased Transcendence’s healing throughput. This ultimate was designed to be the most effective against sustained, high-damage fire and least effective against short, high-damage bursts (like D.Va’s or Junkrat's ultimates). But, due to the amount of healing it provided, there were times when it was possible for even sustained fire to overcome Transcendence’s output. We’ve made the heal powerful and also allowed Zenyatta to move around more quickly while it’s active.

    UI UPDATES

    Game Options

    • Players can now enter numerical values for any option that also has slider (e.g. FoV, volume, sensitivity, etc.)
    • Controls
    • Mouse sensitivity can now be adjusted out to two decimals
    • Gameplay
    • Mid-match tips can now be toggled on or off (this will enable/disable tips that pop up after a player dies)
    • Social
    • Friend Request toasts can now be toggled on or off
    • Friend notifications can now be toggled on or off
    • Whispers can now be toggled on or off
    • Video
    • Added 21:9 aspect ratio support
    • Players can now enable a real-world clock by toggling the "Display System Clock" setting

    Social Features

    • Certain commendations will now appear less frequently during end-of-round voting (e.g. Zenyatta’s Transcendence Healing and Zarya’s Projected Barriers Applied)

    BUG FIXES

    General

    • The Hero Gallery now remembers the last hero you were looking at and will properly highlight that hero whenever returning to the gallery
    • Fixed a bug that caused the “payload is nearing its final destination” music to continue playing even after the match was over
    • Fixed a bug that caused the UI to disappear whenever the game was forced into windowed mode by an external application
    • Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause visual healing effects to appear on the wrong hero whenever multiple players attempted to up a Health Pack
    • Fixed a bug that would sometimes cause different heroes’ victory poses to clip into each other
    • Fixed several lighting issues with the killcam

    Maps

    • The payload on King’s Row will no longer retreat back inside its starting location if the attacking team fails to push it
    • Adjusted the Hero Select screen volume for the attacking team on Watchpoint: Gibraltar
    • Added Spectator camera collision to most maps
    • Fixed issues with player collision across multiple maps
    • Fixed issues with ambient lighting and shadows across multiple maps

    Heroes

    • Fixed a bug that caused D.Va to sometimes ignore player collision when summoning her mech
    • Fixed a bug where Mei’s Ice Wall would persist in the game world even after the player switched heroes or left the game
    • Fixed even more bugs that allowed Reaper to Shadow Step to unintended locations
    • Fixed a bug that sometimes caused Reinhardt’s Barrier Field to get stuck in the “on” position if the player used the “Toggle Barrier” setting
    • Fixed a bug that sometimes caused Roadhog to accidentally Chain Hook targets standing behind him
    • Fixed a bug that caused Winston’s Barrier Projector shield to ignore the “Sound Effects Volume” setting

    Re: Overwatch

Can't wait to play Ana. Everytime I play as a healer people stray too far away so the idea of snipe healing someone doing work and then sniping a mother fucker trying to kill them is dope.

As a huge DVA player I dig the changes. It was always annoying being blown up by my own mech if I had to ditch it without forward momentum. The defense matrix change is intriguing. It's basically a Reinhardt shield now and that I can dig.

The one hero per team in ranked is interesting. On one hand I get it and I like it. On the other I feel like it could change the dynamic too much but idk. I fucking hate facing double bastion so I love it I lied.

I think they may have put the stacking cap at 2, but some type of limit on it is better than nothing. Honestly, Bastion stacking isn't that much of a pain the ass compared to a million midgets with their turrets or two Hanzos dropping their dragons every two minutes. Then again, I main Pharah so maybe that's why I'm never really bother by Bastion.

The D.Va changes sound good too. I always thought her deflect should operate similar to Reinhart's shield.

On, and all aboard the fucking hype train for Momma Pharah. I look forward to using her. Her skill set sounds like it add another interesting dynamic to gameplay. Her ultimate could be the deciding factor near the end of so many matches.

Ana reminds me of the Crusaders Crossbow Medic from TF2, when that was announced, only this time, at least it seems she has some sort of attack to aid her along as well...but the long range sniper is good imo, especially to Widowmaker players who keep getting told to go support, because god know, we've all encountered a game with at least three of the same hero...

I can't fucking handle competitive mode. First of all the matches take way too long. I'm not exactly into the idea of only getting 2 games in the span of an hour. Secondly people are so fucking stupid it's ridiculous. It's mostly from the t-rage I have from doing squats earlier but I got so fucking mad I spiked my controller and shattered it like a little bitch.

    Fuck you.

I feel you on competitive. It's not necessarily bad, and I actually like the longer matches. My problem is definitely ransoms. Ransoms are a problem in quick games too, but in competitive it becomes infuriating to have teammates not play the objective and constantly switch between characters for no real purpose. It also sucks when you have someone playing a healer/support who absolutely sucks at their role, they're basically useless and it becomes 5v6.

A friend and I went into some competitive games last night because she wanted to get her competitive ranking up. All was fine until we got a streak of terrible random teammates. We had one group who would constantly rush on defense and have us lose rounds in record time. We also had teammates who would pick aggressive characters and refuse to push forward while we were on attack. We also had a game or two with some Mercys that would never heal you when you needed it and gave out damage boosts to you when you weren't in battle. We did manage some wins, but we had to bust so much ass to beat people clearly below us in skill level due to poor team play.

    Re: Overwatch

Competitive is unplayable solo. It's truly fucking awful. It might get better once they limit heroes to one per team but Jesus Christ. I just lost 5 consecutive games because people were doubling up on Junkrat on ATTACK, showing zero sensibility on how to actually play their characters and didn't understand that there was an objective to be had. It's seriously so fucking frustrating that the whole allure of competitive is that the retarded shit in unranked is supposed to be gone. Yet somehow it's even more prevalent.

I led my team in healing/objective time/objective kills in every single game except the first and even then I was at least playing a role. Competitive in this game is unleashing a fucking demon that was locked away in my soul because I wanna play the game and dedicate so much time to it but I can't fucking get through a 45 minute game without wanting to kill everyone on my block.
