How on earth Northern Ireland got to the finals? Literally the worst football team I've ever watched.

I feel like Poland didn't even play well. Looking forward to the match vs. Germany on Thursday. That should be a fun one.

Northern Ireland were terrible. It was like watching a Pulis team.

But anytime I get to see Paddy McNair is a win

Felt quite sorry for Lafferty. He was knocking the ball down for no one and didn't get anything sent through to him for the whole match and was forced into that overhead kick.

Germany look very good going forward but a bit suspect defensively. They will be a different proposition with Hummels back in the side.

Danny Murphy has a hard-on for Kroos. I mean yeah he's been great but you don't have to tell us every 2 minutes.

Don't think Ukraine played badly at all they were looking really dangerous towards the end of the first half, but truth be told they were lacking in the final third of the pitch.
What a cross from Ozil to create the second goal though!

Ukraine were alright going forward but defensively and tactically they were probably the worse team I've seen so far. To allow Kroos, Khedira and Ozil as much space as they did was criminal. If Germany were in top form and really going for it that would have been at least 5-0.

Come on, they weren't worse than Northern Ireland.

Also, not sure that Hummels coming back into the side is necessarily a good thing for Germany. Mustafi is quality and I think Hummels is quite overrated.

I really don't think Germany will win the Euros this time, good wingers could get at those full backs and a team better-organised and harder-working than Ukraine would stifle them going forward. On top of that, neither Khedira or Kroos are natural holding midfielders.

In terms of their defensive shape which is what i was talking about Northern Ireland were 100x better than Ukraine. I'll whole-heartedly agree that Ukraine had a lot more of a threat going forward but that's to be expected.

Good wingers Sim? Isn't that Ukraine's best asset? Their two wingers.

Ukraine weren't the greatest and I expect the Germany/Poland game to be a tighter contest.

Lol wut? They spent large parts of the first period of the game frantically making last-ditch clearances, they were all over the place.

That is true, and that is why before the kick-off I fancied Ukraine to nab a point. However, I underestimated how poor Ukraine would be, and if you can't get quality service to wingers and get them in 1-on-1 situations then it doesn't matter how good they are.

A side like France or Portugal, with better players across the pitch and dangerous wide players would give Germany serious problems, imo.

    Fuck off.

I can understand why O'Neill went for such a defensive line-up, essentially just playing for a 0-0 but was always going to require a bit of luck to get that result.

We should have had a go instead of playing 8 defenders. Should have played more of the lads that got us to the finals. The team that finished the game should have started it, Washington looked lively when he came on. Disappointed Grigg didn't get on just for chant purposes.

Fuck it, I'm off to Lyon tomorrow to have a good time win or lose. GAWA!

    And he scores goals...!

Just to expand on that a little bit more, as PS says, playing 8 defenders doesn't necessarily translate to being a shape capable of keeping a clean sheet. Despite the fact that Ukraine were poor with the ball, they did still carry a threat against Germany, who incidentally are a much better side than Poland, against whom Northern Ireland never looked like scoring.

But purely in terms of defensive shape, Northern Ireland, despite sacrificing any chances of being threatening themselves, conceded 13 shots on goal. Ukraine conceded 15 shots on goal, and had 5 themselves.

So not only did simply watching the game tell you that Northern Ireland looked far shakier defensively than Ukraine, the stats also show that in terms of chances conceded they were about the same. And, on top of that, Ukraine carried a genuine threat themselves, and were playing against Germany, not Poland.
