    (-) NJC 2015 - Final Match

    --------------------------

Well, clearly what's going to happen is Honma beats Makabe, Yujiro, Goto and then Tanahashi as Honmamania runs wild in Ryogoku and he finally claims the NEVER Championship.

I can't call it. Okada having Fale in the first round makes me think his road to redemption is going to carry on for even longer and Fale eliminates him. With the recent tag team title change, maybe they're opening it up for Shibata to have a run at this, Shibata to beat Fale in the finals, then set up a match with the BC leader AJ Styles in April. Long shot is Ibushi to set up Ibushi/Nakamura III, but he's got a real tough side of the draw.

Re: New Japan Cup 2015 - Starts 5th March

It's funny because I had hoped that the tag switch was to free up a great run for Meiyu Tag but I was quite disappointed with these brackets because I could easily see both men losing in the 1st round to set up an IWGP 4th Gen matchup.

Taking Ishii out & just looking at the brackets I think Makabe's the favorite right now. He's got two virtual byes to start off. (I don't think it's crazy for Honma to get his win here and make it to the semi-finals though btw) Still, Makabe winning and challenging Ishii would both uninspiring & the World Title look like crap again. Okada was a lame duck last year and we're headed there again with AJ at this rate.

A sensible storyline with higher upside would be for Nagata to win. They teased at on the 2/14 with his emotional sitdown interview and hype vid that he's thinking about hanging it up in NJPW. And he's still pretty awesome so it could be good quality-wise too, especially if AJ flops again.

Okada has a built in story with AJ from last year.

Are we going to do some kind of pick em like we did last year? Saw the card last night, and I look forward to seeing who leaves the winner in the end.

Re: New Japan Cup 2015 - Starts 5th March

The first round happened today. Here's what we have to look forward to in the 2nd Round.

    Spoiler:

    Toru Yano vs. Kota Ibushi
Tetsuya Naito vs. Bad Luck Fale

    Togi Makabe vs. Yujiro
    Hirooki Goto vs. Katsuyori Shibata

I had a hunch they'd put Yano over Tanahashi. But that combined with Fale pretty much kills Block A in terms of match quality. Unfortunately my first instinct of Makabe appears to be right. The only other I'd even rate as even a darkhorse is Ibushi. Goto winning would be friggin' awesome but Meiyu Tag are going against Gallows & Gun so it's kinda bad timing. Same for Shibata though at least Goto has his tournament specialist gimmick if they wanna go there. Why would Naito win when his evolved form (Ibushi) is right there? The others are all horrible. Between running NOAH into the ground, overpushing Bullet Club, and killing this once promising tournament, J&G are near an all time low at booking quality at this point.

Match quality from Round 1: Goto/Nagata was the strongest match that all should enjoy. Naito/Anderson was very good by their standards though I thought the ending was a bit flat, and Makabe/Honma was fun. The rest weren't that great but what can you do? Just know Fale's no good.

Re: New Japan Cup 2015 - Starts 5th March

I actually liked the show, no Young Bucks, no Omega, Doc and Anderson both losing and their matches didn't have run-ins, ok Fale won but we all knew he'd win because that's the way the wind is blowing at the moment. Okada's fall from grace storyline would be better if he was paired with a good worker, he tried his best, but you can't get a good match out of Fale.

Yano winning is stupid because no-one buys him as a winner of this cup, he doesn't need the rub of beating Tanahashi because he's not getting a push, and you've decreased the quality of the quarter final matches by eliminating Tanahashi.

Goto/Nagata was the clear match of the night, though I enjoyed Shibata/Kojima, Makabe/Honma and Naito/Anderson as well.

Interesting flare up between Tenzan and Ishii after their 6 man as well.

Seems obvious to me that Ibushi/Fale will be one of the semis, even though Ibushi has a built-in reason to challenge Nakamura if he wins, I can't see them doing that match again so soon, or beating Fale, so King wins there. Makabe will win his quarter final for sure, which leaves Shibata/Goto as the only match I'm on the fence about. I'm sticking with my gut that Shibata wins the whole thing and continues his feud with Bullet Club by facing AJ Styles for the IWGP title which he'll lose because AJ will be going to the ROH/NJPW shows as champion (they could do the same scenario if goto wins). All I know is Fale will be the runner up, not the winner.

Fale/Makabe with Makabe winning and challenging for the weakest of the 3 belts sounds like one of the worst finals they could book, so perhaps your gut will be right Zero

A couple big upsets that took me by surprise in Round 1, but overall a really entertaining show, especially for not having the bucks or omega.

Re: New Japan Cup 2015 - Starts 5th March

Yano has a history of having his number (especially in tournaments) plus if you look at the tour Yano and Tanahashi are matched up every night so I kind of anticipated it. I think it was more to hold off Tanahashi/Ibushi for a bigger stage.

Dude, Fale sucks. Even by unathletic big guy standards. His entrance alone of walking out took like 2 minutes it felt like.

I just thought it'd be Makabe all along because why else announce the NEVER title being up there if it wasn't gonna come into play? What feud does Shibata have with BC outside of the tag titles which they lost clean? They weren't teasing either of them at all, and honestly I don't think it benefits anyone to have one of Meiyu Tag lose another title match. It's hard to believe they're booking their company's World Title around a 3 show indy tour, but that's Jado & Gedo logic for you.

    (3) Hiroshi Tanahashi & Yohei Komatsu vs. Yuji Nagata & Sho Tanaka
I have more interest in this match than I do 75% of the cup matches.

    Right choice of main event.

At this point I could see Ibushi/Shibata in the finals. With Ibushi going for the IC title if he wins and Shibata making a play for the World title if he wins.

I wouldn't mind seeing AJ vs Shibata.

Re: New Japan Cup 2015 - Starts 5th March

Well, there goes my prediction of Fale/Shibata in the final.

Most of the better matches on the card were non-tournament. The 10 man tag was decent, I did lol at Taguchi's funky kokeshi and Tenzen and Kojima aren't holding back on the aggression. My favourite match of the evening was Tanahashi/Komatsu Vs Nagata/Tanaka, really enjoyed the dynamic of one rookie paired with one vet and these kids are coming along nicely, lovely transition by Komatsu into a boston crab to get the win. I actually really liked the CHAOS/Bullet Club tag as well, and they gave Cody Hall a lot of time in here.

As for the rest of the cup, pleasing winners, but not much to write home about. Makabe/Yujiro was hard hitting, sick powerbomb into the turnbuckle, but you've always got a ceiling with Yujiro matches (WHO'S THE VALET?), and Ibushi/Yano was mercifully kept short like all Yano matches should be. His mocking of Tanahashi doing commentary did crack a smile from me. Naito Vs Fale was the surprise of the night for me results wise, but it was Fale so the match wasn't that good, and Goto Vs Shibata had a good main event to wrap this show up, but I felt it fell short of previous great matches the two of them have had together.

Semi final line up is much more desirable than the quarter final line up, Makabe Vs Goto will be a war, and Ibushi Vs Naito feels like a fresh match which will at least give Ibushi a good opponent for the first time in this cup. Ibushi will win his match because he has a tailor made challenge in mind to Nakamura whereas Naito challenging AJ feels like a reach, and I am starting to see the logic in Zero's prediction of Makabe winning. Makabe/Ibushi final most likely.
