    NJPW NJPW on AXS TV

Tomorrow night on ROH's old stomping ground, AXS TV (Formerly HDNet) NJPW continues their campaign into English speaking markets with a TV show! The preview episode has gotten rave reviews from many of the chosen talking heads that saw it, particularly the commentary team of the very good boxing commentator and former Stampede Wrestling and Pro Wrestling NOAH announcer Mauro Ranallo as well as former NJPW wrestler and UFC Fighter Josh Barnett. It's hard for me to believe some of the hype but It has gotten me to rewatch NJPW matches so it should be interesting.

As I understand it the first season is more of a catch up show and a test out of the commentary team and should this be somewhat successful next season will be new episodes of NJPW with this English team.

Kicking off the show tomorrow it's going to be a look back at the Tanahashi vs Okada match from Wrestle Kingdom 7, 2013. A match built up by Okada delivering an awesome quote about turning down WWE and making Japan an ocean from a small pond. Decide for yourself what the best Tanahashi/Okada match was with this show because they're showing many of them along with quite a few heavily hyped and popular matches. Here's a lineup for the rest of season 1 for you to check out when it hits online, maybe even on TV if you have it.

In addition to the matches there's allegedly going to be subtitled promos after the matches as well as reactions from the announcers so
we'll see how that turns out.

New NJPW fans have fun seeing some good stuff, old NJPW fans lets hope the commentary can not suck.

According to Bryan Alvarez, the commentary is amazing especially considering it's taped a year or two after the matches took place.

James Caldwell said Ranallo and Barnett were really good together. After reading his review, I want to see the series. Sounds awesome.

    Re: NJPW on AXS TV

Now this is extremely low praise, but I legit thought this was the best American call I've heard in at least 11 years. I didn't even think that Tanahashi/Okada match was that great on first viewing and even I started to get excited on the "Mama Mia!". So many great little things in the commentary, even the interview with Tanahashi was pretty cool. It was also kinda cool to see moves that the wrestlers don't use anymore. Thankfully for Okada he dropped that inverted abdominal stretch thing, even Barnett knew that sucked. (Which I loved him mentioning!) But Tanahashi needs to bring back that 12-6 imho.

If WK was my favorite NJPW show in years, this honestly might have been my second favorite.

    Episode 2:
Shinsuke Nakamura, Tomohiro Ishii and Jado Vs Minoru Suzuki, Lance Archer and TAKA Michinoku
Kazuchika Okada Vs Hirooki Goto - New Japan Cup Finals 2013

    Episode 3:
Hiroshi Tanahashi Vs Kazuchika Okada - Invasion Attack 2013

    ---------------------------

Invasion Attack was my favourite match of 2013, so it's well worth checking out if you haven't seen it. I just watched Episode 2, is that how Ishii is supposed to be pronounced? Ish--ee--eeeee? Commentators definitely made the Cup feel like a bigger deal than it is. Love having translations for the promos, but they need to stop using white subtitles if the background is white already, Okada's interviews were hard to work out because he was also wearing a white T-Shirt.

I dont think Ishii is anything but eesh-eeee. The two i's indicate the sound is held longer than if it were "Ishi" i think.

Will check these out tonight for sure.

    Re: NJPW on AXS TV

For those of you that enjoyed Nakamura/Ibushi at Wrestlekingdom this year, this week's episode of NJPW on AXS TV features the first match between the two from the 2013 G1 Climax which laid the foundations for their WK rematch.

I don't know why they're trying to cram 3 matches into this show when the main event always needs at least 50% of the hour. Why not just show one undercard match rather than two heavily clipped undercard matches. Wouldn't it of made more sense this week to show the 13 minute match between Ishii and Shibata from the same G1 rather than two TenKoji matches that weren't that important in the grand scheme of things. Nakamura's interview talked of him enjoying Ishii's matches and wanting to top the great one he had against Shibata, so it would of tied into the episode. Oh well

Between NJPW on AXS and Lucha Underground, subtitles might be the best addition to wrestling in 2015.
