Wow, can't believe Leo got snubbed again...

Seriously though, a lot of things seemingly snubbed as usual. While I haven't seen a lot of these, films like Nightcrawler, Gone Girl, Lego Movie, etc got snubbed big time it seems. And Insterstellar missing a lot, but that isn't too surprising given the lack of respect it got at the Golden Globes. Got a lot of sound nominations which is deserving, but if you didn't want to give it a best picture nom, at least give something to Chastain or McConaughey. They both knocked it completely out of the park.

I've seen exactly three movies on this list. (Captain America, X-Men, Guardians)

    I'm clearly a failure.

Or broke. <~~ it's that one

Have you seen it? It was a great film, but I'm sure most of the Academy found it much too dreary to nominate. Same goes for Nightcrawler, which is just one of those films that they don't "get". Doesn't matter anyways, clearly Boyhood is the odds on fave to walk away with the trifecta of Picture, Director and Screenplay. Good movie or not, I highly doubt the Academy are going to miss the opportunity to award someone for taking 12 years to make a movie.

Surprised but happy to see Whiplash snag a Best Picture nom, was one of my dark horse picks and a damn good movie.

Would've liked to see Selma get a nod for Best Director and Best Actor, particularly the former just so history could be made. I haven't seen it yet but I'm a bit shocked it didn't considering the critical reception for it.

Haven't seen it yet but it sounds really good, I thought a while ago it would be a contender.

I agree with Boyhood, as a story it was pretty much a-b. It's the whole 12 years to make that makes it special.

Kind of shocked but not really for the lack of Gyllenhall love. I am surprised Inherent Vice got no recognition.

All I know is that Everything Is Awesome better fucking win Best Song.

Wow I've only seen on of the best picture nominees, I need to catch up. Although the only ones I'll probably watch are The Imitation Game, Whiplash (although I don't even really know what its about lol) and The Theory of Everything and maybe Birdman. Boyhood just seems dull to me, American Sniper, I know nothing about but from the title just seems like another movie like Hurt Locker which I hated and Selma I just have no interest in. How the hell the Lego movie didn't get nominated I can't understand, I'll have to watch this Boxtrolls to see if its any good.

    Re: 2015 Oscars Discussion Thread

Yeah, Lego Movie getting snubbed is surprising. The only one I've seen out of the animated films that are nominated is How to Train Your Dragon 2, but I still want to see Big Hero 6, and considering how well it's been received I can see it taking the win there. Out of the best films I've only seen one as well, and that's The Grand Budapest Hotel, which I really liked a lot and I'm surprised Ralph Fiennes wasn't nominated for Best Actor his role in that movie because he was great in it, IMO. I would like to see American Sniper sometime down the line, as well as Foxcatcher.

Yeah from what I heard the reason why Lego Movie didn't get in, was due to the film being more than 75% animated. The rest of the Animated choices I didn't take a look and watch, but Lego Movie to me felt something new and different. Well as I see the other categories, I see that Birdman could win a few. Birdman probably landed in my top 5 between 2014/2015 year of movies, I highly recommended the movie, and you should maybe see it twice so you can understand the ending better. Foxcatcher is another movie I really liked, and Steve Carrell's character in John DuPont made me wonder, who gave birth to this creepy bastard lol.

Sorry Hoho, gonna need you to clarify this one to me. Not nominated because more than 75% animated?

    ANIMATED FEATURE FILM AWARD
    DEFINITION
An animated feature film is defined as a motion picture with a running time of more than 40 minutes, in which movement and characters’ performances are created using a frame-by- frame technique. Motion capture by itself is not an animation technique. In addition, a significant number of the major characters must be animated, and animation must figure in no less than 75 percent of the picture’s running time.

That's all well and good, but it was on the nomination ballot so it had already passed that rule and simply didn't receive enough votes to make the final cut. Want to know why? Here's a great article from Variety that will shed a little light on just how archaic the Academy can be....

Sorry but out of all the animated movies The Lego Movie was the best out of all of the movies nominated. It had a good story and it had that classic tale of the underdog who can't do good (Shrek) save the day and get the chick.

    It's a rip off.
