Your Best of The 2014 World Cup XI?

So, who do you think the best players have been at all positions during the tournament? What would your All Star Starting 11 look like?

    Mine:

    Tim Howard

Serge Aurier - Vincent Kompany - Mets Hummels - Daley Blind

    Paul Pogba - Toni Kroos

Lionel Messi - James Rodriguez - Arjen Robben

    Thomas Muller

Mine sort of looks like Sykotic's at least on the attacking side of things. So many good defensive guys to switch in and out.

There is no doubt that Neuer should be in the team. He influences Germany's football so much: without him, they can't play their high line that has worked well so far. He also has immense concentration (e.g. the game against Brazil), and makes fantastic saves look routine.

To me, no keeper comes close because no keeper is as important and influential to the team as Neuer. And he is still an incredible shot stopper and organiser. Just the all round best keeper.

Haven't thought of the others too much though.

Can't believe Pogba has got a mention in there, should be nowhere near it imo.

This is subject to change given we still have the most important game to play but as of now I would say...

    Neuer

    Lahm, Vlaar, Hummels, Rojo

    Kroos, C. Sanchez

    Robben, Rodriguez, Muller

    Messi.

This is exactly my team, at least for now.

WExcept no Neymar as that makes 12 players.

I think Navas has technically been the best Keeper, though Neuer is the most valuable of all of them, even though I do think Navas/Ochoa/Howard have been better pure stoppers. Also Romero's been quite strong despite hardly getting any rating. He goes under the radar due to Argentina's great attack. Anyway.

    Navas (CRC)

Hummels (GER) - Garay (ARG) - Marquez (MEX) - Armero (COL)

    Kroos (GER) - Masherano (ARG)

Messi (ARG) - Rodriguez (COL) - Muller (GER)

    A. Sanchez (CHI)

To be fair Romero isn't a very good keeper, he has looked weak besides the penalty shootout.

Interesting choice with Alexis, I'd have been tempted to put him in had Chile gotten any further, he was great in those 4 games though.

Re: Your Best of The 2014 World Cup XI?

Romero's shutout Switzerland, Belgium, and Netherlands in a row and then stonewalled Netherlands in the PKs. Even his one "bad" game during the whole tournament against Nigeria he had 9 saves. He's been one of the 5 best Keepers this WC, period. (In a tournament with quite a few great Keepers) Just underappreciated by media/fans.

I can understand not picking Sanchez with Chile going out in the round of 16, but even missing 1 or 2 games his stats hold up and for the time he played you could easily make the case he was as good or better than anyone besides Messi and Rodriguez.

Also just going with all Final Four players is boring

Re: Your Best of The 2014 World Cup XI?

Not period, Romero had hardly anything to do a lot of the time and hasn't looked confident. He isn't great on the ball, he isn't particularly good commanding the box from set-pieces, he isn't a top modern keeper like Neuer, he is a mediocre keeper getting by in a good team. Hence why he couldn't get a game at Sampdoria or Monaco.

Sanchez was great while Chile were still in, just I think Rodriguez, Muller, Messi and Robben have had a bigger effect on the tournament.

Re: Your Best of The 2014 World Cup XI?

So I'm guessing you're not supporting him to win the Golden Glove he just made finalist for? Also I forgot the most important thing in regards to Romero: He's the top scoring fantasy GK in our league. Whether you think he's a good keeper or not or whether he's gotten games in association play doesn't change his performance in this tournament, in which he's done everything asked of him, and more, especially from the round of 16 on. (Not saying he's better than Neuer btw just that he deserves more respect for the purposes of these World Cup-based threads)

There's truth to the Sanchez point in that all of those guys played bigger roles in the grand scheme of things and Rodriguez/Mullen/Messi have been better players straight-up. Not Robben though, screw him.
