    --------

This movie has been in talks for a few years now, but here's an update from Jerry Bruckheimer.

Regarding the long-in-the-works Top Gun sequel, he said: "Well you know, technology has changed obviously since we made the first one. So I think we're going to take advantage of what the world is like today, with the drones kinda taking over a lot of our wars today, but is the pilot obsolete? Those jet jockeys, are they gone now? No, I don't think so, I think they're going to be around for quite a while. Because you still have to make quick decisions and the pilots who want to make quick decisions, so we're going to hopefully highlight both worlds."
Would be an interesting update. The first was pretty cool, even if it was a tad bit fruity.

‘Top Gun 2′ to Feature Maverick, Drone Warfare

Do you feel the need? The need for a “Top Gun” sequel?

Rumors of “Top Gun 2″ have swirled since the original touched down in 1986. Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed that the project is in development and revealed its plot details at a “Terminator Genisys” press junket in Berlin, Collider reports.

“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now,” Ellison said. “He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today.”

He added, “It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”

Fans of the original film will be delighted to know that Ellison hinted that Tom Cruise will reprise his role. “There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no ‘Top Gun’ without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” Ellison said.

Time to blast Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” in celebration.
I'm only in if Cruise is in.

Tom Cruise says he's in for Top Gun 2, but only if there is no CGI involved

Tom setting the record straight on whether he will reprise his role as Maverick, “If I can figure it out, if all of us can figure it out, it’d be fun to do, I’d like to fly those jets again.” Cruise continued, “But we got to do all the jets practical, no CGI on the jets…I’m saying right now no CGI on the jets, if we can figure all that out and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun.”
LOL Cruise wants to pilot those damn jets!

I may not enjoy Cruise as an actor that much anymore, but you have to admire his determination to do as much as possible practically in his films.

    Re: Top Gun Sequel (TBA)

The Top Gun Actor Who Is Already Ready To Rejoin Tom Cruise For Top Gun 2

The 1986 film Top Gun has risen to cult film status in the years following its initial release thanks to its many memorable scenes, quotes, and that Kenny Loggins theme song. A sequel to the film has long been spoken of, but Tom Cruise recently made it official when he confirmed that is was "definitely happening." It's been over 30 years since we've seen the high-flying Maverick, but what would he be without his rival Iceman? Val Kilmer is making sure that everyone knows that he is down to play with the boys once again.

Taking to Twitter, Val Kilmer shared a photo of himself wearing a "cool as ice" Iceman t-shirt. In Top Gun, Kilmer played LT Tom "Iceman" Kazanski, a hotshot flyboy who knew how to keep things cool up in the air. Kilmer wrote in his tweet that he still had his "Top Gun plaque," and he's "still got the moves!". Kilmer is clearly ready to join Top Gun 2 and is just waiting for the phone call. That call is likely to come too, because it's tough to picture there being a Top Gun movie without Iceman.

In the film, Iceman was the rival to Tom Cruise's Maverick, the two of them possessing near equal skill as pilots, but with entirely different composures. Maverick was, well, a maverick who flew by his own rules, while Iceman was cool like...ice. This led to the two of them butting heads quite frequently, whether it was in the sky, in the locker room, or on the volleyball courts. Despite being kind of a jerk, Iceman was proven to be right in the film, as Maverick's reckless attitude led to unnecessary casualties. In the end, the two of them settle their differences and become friendly rivals.

With so much time passed since the original film, it's unknown what Iceman has been up to all these years. Maybe he's still out there in the skies leading a bunch of young hotshots, or maybe he took a page out of Maverick's book and eventual became a flight instructor at Top Gun. Whatever the case may be, I'd be pretty surprised if Val Kilmer didn't have some kind of role in Top Gun 2.

Top Gun 2 has been in development since 2010. At first, original director Tony Scott expressed an interest in directing the sequel, but his tragic suicide in 2012 left the future of the movie unclear. The project seemed to pick up more steam with Justin Marks apparently writing a script for the sequel and Tom Cruise announcing that they would be relying on CGI as little as possible. The jets will be real people, and you can bet Cruise will be in the cockpit as much as he can.

Stick with CinemaBlend as more updates on Top Gun 2 come pouring in.
Man, I loved the first one, and I'm so into this sequel. Especially with both of them back.

Yeah, it would be terrible if they ruined the cinematic gem that was Road House.

For the record, you can't "ruin" Top Gun because it's one of the shittiest movies ever made so if anything they can only improve on it.

Crazy like the time in Next of Kin when Liam Neeson's American accent outacted Swayze and the rest of the cast? Or my personal fave when Swayze lost the award for best performance in a film to the truck in Black Dog.

    Re: Top Gun Sequel (TBA)

The Top Gun sequel release date is set for 2019 between Spider-Man 2 and The Lion King

Paramount Pictures has set a Top Gun sequel release date for July 12, 2019. The film, starring the 1986 original’s Tom Cruise, is the only release currently schedule for that Friday. The date does have the still-untitled Top Gun sequel hitting theaters just one week after Marvel Studios‘ Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel and one week before Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action The Lion King.

Deadline, meanwhile, confirms that the Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed Cruise in Oblivion, will helm. Kosinski’s name had previously been linked to the project. Although the title Top Gun: Maverick floated around briefly, the film is currently without an official title.

A follow-up to Tony Scott’s 1986 hit has been in the works for quite some time, with Tom Cruise interested in reprising his role as United States Naval Aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer previously outlined that the film will deal with the rise of unmanned drones and pilots becoming a thing of the past.

The original Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott and also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards and Tom Skerritt. The film won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away” performed by Berlin. In 2015, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry, finding it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Here we go, 2 years until release.
