I didn't know Smith watched it as a kid, but i did hear he watched and loved the original series. Supposedly he wanted Kaitlin to play Shannon Doherty's role in Mallrats.

I want to say certain episodes were edited before they were shown in the US.

Re: Fract Reviews Degrassi: The Next Generation - Whatever It Takes

    Season One – Episode 4
“Eye of the Beholder” or “Nobody Wants to Dance with a Fat Cow”

“Terri doesn't want to attend Degrassi's first nighttime dance because she thinks she's too fat for any guy to be interested in her. Spinner likes her, but Paige wants him for herself and by playing on her insecurities, gets Terri drunk. Meanwhile, J.T. and Toby skip the dance to look at adult sites on the internet while Toby's parents go out for the evening and Emma meets bad boy Sean Cameron at the dance.”
What Actually Happens: This episode is pretty much amazing from top to bottom. We meet Terri, who is perhaps the normalest normie in all of Degrassi, except she weighs just a teeny bit more than the other girls, and therefore hates everything to do with herself. She wants a date with toast of the town Spinner, but so does that hot slut Paige. Being the manipulative bitch she is, Paige gets Terri wasted on fine wine before the dance, and she ruins her dance with the lovely Spinner by falling all over herself and throwing up at the dance. Embarrasing! The episode ends with the crushing reveal that Spinner gets his science notes from Paige now, leaving Terri in the dust.

This episode also introduces us to Sean, a motorcycle-riding badboy who couldn’t pass seventh grade, and gets subtly harassed by familiar-looking Jimmy all episode. Eventually he soothes himself by dancing with that dorky looking Emma girl, obviously setting up a romance that will inspire a generation. Also, J.T. and Toby look at porn together and say a lot of cringeworthy things while they do it. The high point of the episode is when a record scratch sound plays right as Toby’s parents catch them, a moment of cliché so beautiful it may never be topped.

So The Drama Rating: This episode lacks in high drama, but is full of mild drama like sneaky porn watching, underage drinking, and Sean’s general presence. 5/10
These Kids are Dumb Rating: No one’s that dumb in this episode. Everyone just kinda acts like a normal teenager. Toby and J.T. could probably have been a bit more subtle with their porn addiction though. 2/10
Degrassi Life Lesson: Sometimes people DO want to dance with a fat cow, and you don’t even have to get drunk.

This line had me legit lol'ing.

Although, to be fair, Paige did go to Banting University. I hear that's the Harvard of the North!

(I get it's a show trying to cater to American audiences, but what a stupid quote. If anything, they should be saying how Harvard is the Banting of the South.)

Great little episode though. Sean was one of my favorite characters while Paige did an amazingly bitchy thing to Terri. Loved it.

Re: Fract Reviews Degrassi: The Next Generation - Whatever It Takes

    Season One – Episode 5
“Parents Day” or “News About Kids About News About Kids”

“With Parents' Day fast approaching, Toby tries to convince his divorced parents that the event is canceled in order to avoid an ugly public spat between them. Meanwhile, Ashley and Paige vie for the attention of Toby's mom, who happens to be a casting agent. Emma is annoyed by the morning announcements program because she thinks it's biased and writes an opinionated paper about it.”
What Actually Happens: In today’s A-plot, Toby’s parents both show up for Parent’s Day and totally embarrass their child by arguing incessantly in front of cool guy teacher Mr. Simpson. That’s the whole deal here, really. It’s sad watching Toby get all flustered while his parents have a freak meltdown, and eventually he loses his shit and calls them both out. This is one of the only two or three times Toby will actually be cool, so cherish it.

Also Emma does the most Emma thing ever and writes an opinionated news article about the hilariously awful news program (N.A.K.: News About Kids) that Degrassi forces down her throat ever week. She’s pretty proud of it until Sean’s older brother calls her out for being a biased and ignorant douche. It looks like dark days for Degrassi’s blossoming power couple, but Emma and Sean hammer out their beef in the computer lab later, in between stolen glances and daydreaming about what the other one looks like naked.

Worth noting is that Paige and Ashley are both vying for the attention of a casting agent AKA Toby’s mom AKA that raging bitch from earlier, but it is Terri who instead gets her card because apparently she has a good look. Fat cows everywhere rejoice.

So The Drama Rating: I’ll give it a solid 4/10 for Toby’s parents having their little argument, as well as Emma and Sean’s bro going to war over a news piece. Solid drama considering there’s no consequence to any of it.
These Kids are Dumb Rating: The kids on News About Kids are the really dumb ones here. 10/10
Degrassi Life Lesson: Don’t be afraid to stand up to your parents, cause they’re actually wrong all the time.

These tongue-in-cheek reviews are kinda more fun than the actual episodes.

The cheese factor is part of the fun of the series. Besides, right now they're in Junior High. They kind of have to be embarrassingly stupid to be believable.

Re: Fract Reviews Degrassi: The Next Generation - Whatever It Takes

    Season One – Episode 6
“The Mating Game” or “I Like Turtles”

Jimmy and Ashley's eight month anniversary comes up but with Paige playing Juliet to Jimmy's Romeo for their English class assignment, Ashley contemplates having sex with Jimmy to keep him interested. Toby attempts to get closer to Emma when the seventh graders are assigned a media immersions assignment on endangered animals.
What Actually Happens: Our string of Toby-centric episodes continues because now the little nerd has hopelessly fallen in love with Emma, who apparently has beer-flavored nipples or something cause now she’s got two guys on the hook. In an attempt to get in her pants, Toby starts helping her with a project about endangered turtles that is almost definitely even lamer than it sounds. In the end, Emma bails on a Lame-Turtle-Movie-Night to hang with Sean, and Toby cries himself to sleep every night.

After a crazy old lady teaches the eighth graders about sex, Ashley and Jimmy both start wondering if it’s time to consummate their relationship. Ashley in particular gets concerned, seeing how school tramp Paige is moving all over her man during Romeo and Juliet rehearsals. Fearing that blowies are no longer enough, Ashley tells her man to get ready for the good stuff, but eventually they both chicken out because they’re not ready. Instead they make condom balloons like mature adults.

So The Drama Rating: There’s nothing dramatic about endangered turtles or teenagers wanting to have sex. 0/10
These Kids are Dumb Rating: Listen Toby Tobes, the way to a girl’s heart is not pretending you love all the dumb shit she loves. Caring about endangered turtles doesn’t help anyone. Except turtles. 3/10
Degrassi Life Lesson: How to put a condom onto a banana.

Re: Fract Reviews Degrassi: The Next Generation - Whatever It Takes

    Season One – Episode 7
“Basketball Diaries” or "Drake Is The Lord of the Flies"

“Jimmy is desperate to make the basketball team, but with all the practicing, his schoolwork begins to suffer. To get an energy boost, he convinces Spinner to skip a Ritalin pill and give it to him instead, which leads to disastrous consequences for them both. Liberty is tired of writing Ashley's video announcement speeches for her all the time and not getting any credit for it.”
What Actually Happens: When Liberty is running through the halls, you know you’re in for a lame time. Apparently she writes the morning announcements for Ashley but doesn’t get any credit for it, and when she delivers them late, like today, she even gets chewed out! Man, life sure does suck for Liberty. Eventually she gets to read some announcements and she sucks but then gets better and everything’s cool again, but who cares. It’s fucking Liberty.

Meanwhile in the story that actually matters, Jimmy “Young Money” Brooks is struggling to balance basketball and school. His teacher, Ms. Kwan, isn’t taking any shit and is really riding him hard to read Lord of the Flies, but he’s got to spend all of his free time (apparently) working on his jump shot instead. Desperate to get a kick in the pants, he borrows a Ritalin from Spinner (who has ADD, surprising literally no one). Jimmy gets amped for the BIG GAME and scores TWELVE WHOLE POINTS, but gets cut by his coach for being a ballhog and hurting his own teammate (Sean, who almost gets away with a curse word in this episode).

Spinner misses his Ritalin, and ends up mooning the crowd at the basketball game. It’s amazing.

So The Drama Rating: 6/10 cause there’s DRUGS in this episode.
These Kids are Dumb Rating: Spinner’s dumb for sharing prescription pills, and Jimmy’s dumb for taking them. 5/10
Degrassi Life Lesson: Drugs are bad, mmmk. This will not be the last time Degrassi drills that one into your head. It's even foreshadowing for the INTENSE season finale, in a way.

EDIT: Oh and it's worth noting, this is the first episode without a Toby storyline. If only Liberty were also left out, this would be a clear A+ episode.
