    Re: Anime Official Discussion

In general, I have no faith in live action remakes of anime. Especially ones done outside Japan.

    I'll leave it at that. >.>;

    Finally current with Black Clover.

    Currently watching The Promised Neverland.
    Everything will surely be alright.

    Re: Anime Official Discussion

Unless someone tells me its amazing, idc about live action remakes. I have never seen a live action remake of an animated property that was actually better. I'd much rather see animated takes on live action properties tbh.

Oh, I didn't see this till now. The writing was atrocious. Fire Force is fascinating because it was one of the most adventurous production teams out there, a lot of them from Shaft, and offers a unique directing style for a shounen. The animation is obviously fucking terrific. The writing is god awful, I've never been more disappointed by an anime in my life. The pace was completely off. The fan service humor is beyond dreadful.

They defeat their own emotional moments by having their zero-dimensional women characters get stripped to basically nothing. The main character is always molesting one of the characters and that character's attire makes absolutely zero sense in the context of the show. It doesn't even come close to One Piece or MHA or what have you where they've at least got an excuse for the EXTREMELY more moderate fan service. They also have what amounts to torture porn with Tamaki where they have her be absolutely helpless (despite plenty of indications she's an extremely capable fighter) as she gets beat the fuck out of till the "hero" comes to the rescue. Not even Sakura from Naruto has ever been that dreadful and she was genuinely helpless early on Another example would be the one episode "rookie competition" that gets angled as a tournament arc but they rush through it in a single episode without really highlighting anyone. There's also protag beating the fuck out of another captain in one episode (again what could have been a whole arc rushed in 20 mins) and that captain u-turning faster than any Naruto villain has ever done.

I was insanely hyped for Fire Force, and I've even gone back and watched what was a fucking 10/10 debut episode, and it's crazy how badly it receded in the span of less than 5 episodes. I've genuinely not seen writing that bad in a shounen before.

    Anyways.

I'm watching the Nisemonogatari right now by Shaft. Many of the people who work on Fireforce worked on that series from what I understand. I just love the aesthetic/directing/quirks of it. There aren't many anime like it. As for the content itself, it's really 50/50, it has some bad habits that need to get phased out of anime in general but the rest is good enough to keep me hooked.

Also dabbling in Your Lie in April (been meaning to watch this for ages but didnt end up doing it till this year and it hit me hard). Haikyuu!! as well. Started Death Parade (cooler concept than delivery).

Vinland Saga was easily the best debuting show of 2019 that I watched. This includes Watchmen/Mandalorian/Witcher. Aside from Fleabag, don't think I watched a more satisfying season of television last year.

Not much out this season that looks interesting tbh. Well, there's the Science Saru anime about high school kids aspiring to make anime that looks cool. But that's about it.

MHA has been having its least interesting season yet.

    Spoiler:

It's still solid and the last episode had a decent bit of Sakuga but they stuck too hard to the Naruto formula without having the time or space to actually let it work. Way too many flashbacks and that doesnt compute in a 24 episode season. Character arcs that dont feel emotionally satisfying. A villain that ended up losing all its luster. And a focus on different characters that didn't pay off because they weren't nearly as developped as people like Bakugo & Todoroki. And of course, shounen authors continue to be unable to write for female characters. Tsuyu, Uraraka, Nejire and the Dragon girl got benched for this entire season only to be needlessly brought back at the end of this arc to play caretakers. Bonus points for Deku's fight with a villain that was presented as being "boss" tier gets whacked in an episode.

Heads up for UKers, Netflix has scored the streaming rights to Studio Ghibli in this country, so they'll be adding the whole back catalogue minus Grave of the Fireflies between February and April.

    I'm pretty excited tbh.

    Re: Official Anime/Cartoon Discussion

Started Carole & Tuesday this past weekend and got caught up to date with RWBY season 7 after doing a bit of binging.

C&T is off to a good start, I can't imagine this is the type of show with hard hitting material to come so I'm just gonna enjoy the laid back vibe and enjoy it for as long as possible. RWBY on the other hand has made a surprising comeback with IMO it's strongest season since season 3. They've still 3 or 4 episodes to balls it up, but still it's the most optimistic I've been about the show in years. Guess those lay offs at Rooster Teeth lit a spark under some of their asses huh?

Finally, caught Weathering With You over the weekend too and if you liked Your Name then I thoroughly recommend it. Gobsmackingly beautiful, music is just as good, arguably better characters as well. Your Name is the better film, but the follow up certainly isn't a let down.

Thoughts on the former (Promised Neverland). I think it's flawed but I really like it. I read the manga initially and was very excited to see it get adapted.

I think it's a weird, yet fun concept. I liked the first 12 eps they put up, and am interested to see where they go from there. Once they complete it, I'll probably read the manga.

Do you think it was well adapted from the manga?

Well enough yeah. Im not sure if it's because I knew what would happen or not but I felt like they made some of the twists a bit too obvious in the anime. But then some moments like Isabella's Lullaby helped make the show worth watching on its own. I've played that song a million times since then. I think it had a good studio behind it so I'm hoping they stick around for any future season. Wouldn't want it to get tossed off to a different studio and go downhill.

I definitely found Isabella to be a fun and interesting character.

The lullaby was quite nice. I should learn to play it on ocarina. :3

Promised Neverland was my favourite show of 2019, I thought it was very well done.

Two new ones to start off 2020 are 1) Darwin's Game and 2) Plunderer. Plunderer is okay but Darwin's Game is really, really good thus far. Oh and as a volleyball player, I'm obviously ecstatic about the new season of Haikyuu.

Read Darwin's Game manga (up to a certain point). I wasnt a big fan but glad you enjoy it. Hopefully theres some nice animation to compensate some weaker writing. Havent heard of Plunderer though the art style & MAL rating means I arguably wont ever check it out.

How many of you all use MyAnimeList? I made a new account on there a while back, and have filled it up a good amount.

Figured we could all befriend eachother on there, and find new things to read/watch that way, too.

Almost done with Re:Zero, and stoked for the second season. Definitely gonna read the manga/light novels.

Still only at like episode 4 or something. I hear Denzel Curry pops up on it. Really need to binge through.

Have you seen Your Lie in April? I had held off on that for ages then watched it at a really low point, and it was so perfectly godsent

Used to be but dont anymore. I just use it to see whats new every season and if anything is good. (most stuff over 8.00 are watchable, under that im more careful, obviously i also use my own interest to judge whether or not i wanna watch it).

Love Re:Zero. Such great character psychology & ambitious storytelling in that show. I cant wait for a sequel.

    EDIT:

Too lazy to make a Castlevania thread and I know this isnt really anime but...

Watched a few eps but didn't hook me. The constant internal monologues got pretty annoying pretty quick
