2013 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

Hopefully I don't forget to update this in the second half of the year!

Use this thread to keep track of your MOTYC, and plug matches for people to check out from WWE to indy. One of my wrestling aims for 2013 was to keep tabs on what I matches I rated during the year, the top end of which will be posted in here.

So far one week into the year:

    1) Tanahashi Vs Okada (NJPW WK7) - 4 1/2 Stars

    2) Sakuraba vs Nakamura (NJPW WK7) - 4 Stars

    3) Prince Devitt Vs Low Ki Vs Ibushi (NJPW WK7) - 3 3/4 Stars

Re: 2013 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

    5*

    - Nakamura vs. Sakuraba (NJPW WK7, Jan 4th)

    4 3/4*

    - Tanahashi vs. Okada (NJPW WK7, Jan 4th)

    4 1/2*

    - Goto vs. Ishii (NJPW NJ CUP Round 2, Mar 17th)

    4 1/4*

    - Undertaker vs. Punk (WWE WM29, Apr 7th)

    4*

    - Nagata vs. Suzuki (NJPW WK7, Jan 4th)
    - Ishii vs. Kojima (NJPW NJ Cup Round 1, Mar 11th)

Would be great if anything that isn't a list would be deleted here and we'd just concentrate on the 4*+ matches. Anything else would just make the lists explode. Just sayin'.

Because we're only 9 days into the year, I'm listing a 3 and 3/4 just do there's something to read. As time goes by, I'll only list 4+

I'm going to follow this thread closely to check out some of the more recommended matches from elsewhere this year.

Punk/Ryback seems like a low-end TV MOTYC to me, loved it.

I don't like throwing around the term 'MOTYC' two weeks into the year, but Show vs Del Rio was pretty great and the best thing of 2013 so far. All of the spots were really simple, but really clever (why wouldn't you press slam a guy through a table 2 minutes in if you could?). I wasn't sure of Del Rio as a face, but he won me over big and made the win feel really emotional. Big Show was great as the unstoppable monster as he always is, and just like his title win off Sheamus they made this feel like Del Rio really earned the win by surviving such a colossal ass-kicking.

I'm still convinced the only reason Del Rio won the title was because it was in Miami.

Show's WHC matches with Bryan last year were my MOTYC up until Mania. He knows how to kick the year off.

I have a feeling Show is going to retire this year (and his last run was a thank you reign), but the man is 40 years old and as good as he ever has been.

Winning the title on the show The Rock returns seems perfectly logical. I don't understand what is so hard to grasp about it. No one is trying to tell you to hold in a Cloverleaf now.

You mean the Smackdown The Rock returned to after not being on for ten years. Winning the championship on that night of all nights makes sense and might bring in more viewers. Spoiling it is a here and there decision but I wouldn't dare not call it smart. It is almost as smart as having different Dragon Screws in your move set.

I'm not saying doing it the same night rock is on is stupid, it's smart. I'm saying you can't claim this is the week it's got the best chance of being 'biggest news of the week' considering Rock Returned, there was a free TLC match On raw and Rock V Punk became official. Surely next week will be quieter.

The Rock returning is going to be the biggest news. However, having it on a week where there is no attraction like The Rock returning is stupid and is a opportunity you ether grasp or you do not grasp. WWE chose to follow thru like a 2nd High Fly Flow.

Re: 2013 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

    4 1/2 Stars
    Tanahashi Vs Okada (NJPW WK7)

    4 Stars
    Sakuraba vs Nakamura (NJPW WK7)

    3 3/4 Stars
Koji Kanemoto & Minoru Tanaka Vs Shuji Kondo & Kaz Hayashi (AJPW 3/1)
Prince Devitt Vs Low Ki Vs Ibushi (NJPW WK7)
Adam Cole Vs Jimmy Jacobs (ROH Hunt for the Gold)

WWE have had plenty of good so far, just no MOTYC or at least 4 star stuff. Looking at the card for Elimination Chamber, I can see some mouthwatering matches that have a chance of getting onto my list.

Re: 2013 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

I don't think it'd be ridiculous to throw cena/punk on the list. If anything I feel it was hurt by just being a raw match, put that exact match on a PPV with a good build and it'd be considered at least 4 stars easy
