    2004 Rebrand

    Smackdown’s No Mercy 2003
    Pain meets the dead

Brock Lesnar was having a great year since coming away from Wrestlemania XIX with the WWE championship as he had successfully defended his title against the likes of Rikishi, Kurt Angle, A-Train and the Big Show but his biggest test would be made official after the Undertaker defeated Rikishi & Kurt Angle on the 9/25 edition of Smackdown. Lesnar would react with respect as he couldn’t wait to face the “phenom” but the Undertaker promised to dethrone the scary monster and take the WWE title away from him. Where did this leave Rikishi & the “Gold Medallist”? They blamed each other for their loss against the Undertaker of course! In fact Rikishi promised to destroy Angle and spent a whole Smackdown looking for the Olympic champion before being attacked himself and was actually Angle Slammed through an announcers desk and left out cold!

Lesnar & Undertaker’s confrontations continued as a contract signing was scheduled for the next weeks Smackdown and it looked like the contract signing was about to end when Kurt Angle came parading down to the ring. Angle promised that whoever won the match at No Mercy will be facing him next but first he wants a piece of Lesnar. Lesnar would then get into the face of Angle and dare him to injure him like he had been promising for months. Before the scene could break down more, Undertaker would get in the middle and tell Angle that he doesn’t care about that situation, he just cared about the title. It was a week before No Mercy and Rikishi came down promising to add Angle to his growing “injury list” but Angle would come out and laugh at this claim until Heyman told both of them to get on for tonight because they would face Lesnar & Undertaker in a tag match. The tag match would end in chaos as Undertaker & Lesnar would walk out winners but only Lesnar would be standing as Angle would attack Rikishi, Undertaker attack Angle and Lesnar hit the final F-5 on the Undertaker but it would be completely different at No Mercy.

Whilst the WWE title had the attention of most, the blossoming tag team division continued to be ripped apart by the Basham Brothers as they not only defeated Billy Kidman & Paul London on the 9/25 Smackdown but also dragged off Paul London and disappearing into the night with him! The week after and the World’s Greatest Tag Team would have a belly of laughs about the situation but Billy Kidman would ignore them and demand the Basham’s give London back. The Basham’s refused and instead demanded a tag team title shot at No Mercy and the week after Heyman accepts the request and at No Mercy the Basham’s would be facing Sean O’Haire & Rey Mysterio. Once the Basham’s had the request granted they promised Paul London would be in the ring by the end of that night. This would be proven to be true as World’s Greatest Tag Team were laughing in the ring, Paul London came crawling out of the ring but instead of helping Haas & Benjamin start to beat down poor London and Kidman came running down before being beat down himself. The next week and it was all about O’Haire & Mysterio as they continued their stupid games before coming face to face with the Basham Brothers. The challenge soon became real when the Basham’s threatened Mysterio before telling O’Haire that everybody thinks of Mysterio when it comes to their team anyway. The game was well and truly on.

The next big match was definitely linked to one of the biggest stars in the WWE, the Hollywood star The Rock. Maven seemed to be getting wise to the “Great One’s” antics but after Maven & Rock had another argument, Rock was found knocked out backstage. Rock was being taken away by an ambulance with a frantic Maven when Rock uttered one name “Rhyno”, Maven took this as gospel and went on the hunt. Maven looks all show the next week for Rhyno and as soon as Maven found Rhyno, he attacked leaving Rhyno down and out. Rhyno tried pleading his innocence but the match was soon made for No Mercy and it looked like The Rock had regained his protégé. However a spanner was thrown into the works as the week before No Mercy, Nunzio came forward to Maven to show that The Rock had paid Nunzio to “take a dive” in their match. Maven was shocked but he continued on and even attack Rhyno before a huge match at No Mercy for the “rookie”.

Eddie Guerrero’s decisions were spiralling out of control as Chavo continued to put his wooden spoon in. The aim of Eddie & Chavo’s attention was Chris Benoit after Eddie & Chavo cheated the US title off of the “Rabid Wolverine”. Benoit would defeat Chavo after Chavo told Eddie to hit Benoit with a chair, Eddie refused at first as he continued to question between his family or his friend. However Chavo told Eddie that it was either him or Benoit and Eddie made his choice…by hitting Benoit with the chair. The decision didn’t seem to sit well with Eddie but Chavo was ecstatic and Benoit was vengeful and even attacked Eddie backstage and put him in the painful crossface…as his cousin ran away. Chavo would get a win back on Benoit the next week but only because Eddie would get involved and thanks to this Chavo would continue to tell Eddie that he will defeat Benoit at No Mercy but Benoit promised revenge before John Cena would rear his head and hint at a title shot for himself but Cena was busy at No Mercy, who with? Veteran Hardcore Holly in a battle for respect! Holly and Cena had been fighting on and off for weeks and Cena even went as far as to hire the F.B.I to beat down Holly. Holly promised to come back and beat the respect out of Cena at No Mercy.

The cruiserweight division continued to be a mess as Jamie Noble and Spanky both fight for their shot at Ultimo Dragon at No Mercy. There was a number one contenders match between Noble & Spanky but Noble’s temper would get the best of him as usual as he used a chair to beat down Spanky, causing a disqualification. Steve Corino would announce that it will be Spanky against the champion at No Mercy but Noble would refuse to go away silently and attacked the manager before making Ultimo Dragon agree to Noble being in the match at No Mercy and a triple threat match was made. All three cruiserweights were in action the next week as they would all watch each other except for in Jamie Noble’s match as after defeating Scotty 2 Hotty, Noble would beat the living daylights out of him with a steel chair. Ultimo & Spanky tried to get to the ring but Noble wouldn’t allow them before promising that this would be what will happen at No Mercy. The week before the big match and Noble promised to take the Cruiserweight title away from the Japanese legend and beat down Spanky “like the little pup he is”. Spanky promised to beat down Noble but Corino promised the match of the year at No Mercy!

New cruiserweight tag team AJ Styles & Amazing Red were desperate to make an impression on Smackdown and the man they turned to was Smackdown GM Paul Heyman. Heyman however was using them to his own devices and he told AJ Styles that he had to lose to Matt Hardy for Heyman to try and make them successful. Unhappily Styles did as he was told and Hardy defeated him on Smackdown. The next week and Styles & Red were waiting for their tag title shot but Heyman just laughed before saying that losers never get title shots and that is exactly what they are! Styles & Red were shocked but Heyman puts them into a handicap match against the whole of Mattitude instead. Of course Mattitude cheat to defeat the new tag team and Heyman orders that Mattitude punish the team, to which the gladly do. The last week before No Mercy and Styles & Red were demanding a match at No Mercy and Heyman laughs before saying that they will have a match but only if they can beat Matt Hardy, Shannon Moore and A-Train that night. Styles & Red fought hard and were within a second of winning the match but that was when Crash Holly got involved and cost them the match and their match at No Mercy. Mattitude and A-Train then destroyed the naïve team as Smackdown got ready for No Mercy 2003…

Maven defeated Rhyno but after the match, Maven found the weapon that “attacked” The Rock backstage.

Ultimo Dragon defeated Jamie Noble & Spanky to retain the Cruiserweight championship. During the match Jamie Noble was about to finish Spanky off when a debuting Akio dragged Noble out of the ring and put him through a table to take him completely out of the match.

    John Cena defeated Hardcore Holly

Chris Benoit defeated Eddie Guerrero to win the United States championship

Sean O’Haire & Rey Mysterio defeated the Basham Brothers to retain the Tag Team titles but only after Billy Kidman & Paul London cost the Basham Brothers the match.

Rikishi defeated Kurt Angle, after the match Rikishi looked to injure Kurt Angle as he has been doing. However Edge made his return to stop Rikishi!

The Undertaker defeated Brock Lesnar to win the WWE championship when Kurt Angle distracted Brock Lesnar and Lesnar turned into the Last Ride.

I was thinking the same exact thing. I was really looking to a 4-way with Taker vs Angle vs Rikishi vs Lesnar at No Mercy. This leads to an ocean of things that Smackdown can give at Survivor Series especially with Edge back in the picture. I was a little skeptical about Hardy being left off of the No Mercy card, but they still have a pretty big role on Smackdown. Keep up the good work!

Just read through this. Unique that you had Taker win the belt from Brock.
Are you going to be posting weekly shows or monthly recaps?
And also are you going to be doing anything with RAW or is this thread only for SmackDown!?

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

Yes this is the follow on from Smackdown Six Sykotic, I'm glad your reading.

Glad you are reading Nash & Wasteland. I think Hardy got injured so I had to write him out of a big storyline with Styles & Red, which was annoying.

This is only Smackdown as it is continuing my Smackdown Six thread and I will be doing monthly recaps until I get to where I am starting this diary (After Wrestlemania) so that you know what is going on in the "alternate universe" then it will be weekly, unless I fall in love with the monthly recaps lol.

Thanks for reading guys, nice to know I have some followers!

    The Big Four Everyone Forgets
    Surviving Survivor Series

No Mercy was the end of Brock Lesnar’s WWE title reign as he lost it to the Undertaker but Lesnar wanted his rematch after Undertaker refused to return the title, despite seemingly won the title thanks to Kurt Angle distracting Lesnar at No Mercy. Lesnar took this news well but he was less than pleased when Kurt Angle came strolling down and seemingly pushed his way into the WWE title match at Survivor Series, making it a triple threat. This unhappiness of Lesnar led to a match against the “Olympic Champion” the next week on 10/30 Smackdown. Undertaker witnessed a great match between the two which Lesnar managed to win but he wasn’t celebrating for long as after the match Angle attacked Lesnar and locked in the Ankle Lock but Undertaker did the decent thing and stopped Angle. Lesnar got back up and the champion and ex-champion faced off before shaking hands to end the show.

The next show and Angle bragged that he was going to win the WWE title at Survivor Series because he had something Undertaker & Lesnar don’t have…the World’s Greatest Tag Team! This prompted a quick return from Vince McMahon who banned the tag team from the match at Survivor Series and that we would find out who the better man was. This is when the Undertaker came down and promised victory before Brock Lesnar came down and also promised victory as all three men squared off but no shots were fired this time. The final Smackdown before Survivor Series saw Lesnar & Undertaker teaming together to take on Angle & WGTT, to which they managed to pull off the upset and win. Angle and World’s Greatest Tag Team attacked after the match but the WWE champion and former WWE champion fought back and ended the Smackdown side by side in the ring, trash talking Kurt Angle and his team of youngsters.

Whilst the WWE championship had three men fighting for it, someone that was normally in the fight had his hands full instead. Rikishi would come out on the Smackdown after No Mercy and name the people he has injured and that he should be the face of the company let alone Smackdown. He lets slip that he beat Kurt Angle and yet is not in the talking for a shot at the WWE title when Edge came walking out onto the stage to a huge cheer! Edge said that he knew how dangerous Rikishi was as he had to sit and watch Rikishi for 4 months thanks to him, missing out on countless title shots and he will get his revenge on the Samoan. Edge then made his in-ring return the next week when he defeated Chuck Palumbo but as Edge celebrated, Rikishi started to come down to the ring before stopping and telling Edge that he “broke him before and will break him again”.

It was Rikishi’s turn to be in action the next week as he defeated Hardcore Holly but during the match Edge went for a spear but just bounced off the huge Samoan. Rikishi then attacked Edge and hit the Samoan Driver before looking to injure Edge again, this time however the young star managed to roll out of the way. Soon the whole of Smackdown became entwined with a 5 on 5 Survivor Series match and Edge & Rikishi were no exception as they were sucked into the match and Edge promised to prove the doubters wrong and eliminate Rikishi himself as their war continued.

Why was there a 5 on 5 Survivor Series match announced? Well it all started on the 10/23 Smackdown show when Maven confronted The Rock about the Rhyno “attack” and Nunzio “taking a dive” and before the shows end, Maven broke the mentorship between him and The Rock leaving The Rock dumb struck and telling Maven that he “was nothing without him”. Maven’s first match after the mentorship ended was against Hardcore Holly and Maven came out the victor. Maven celebrated but that is when the scorned “Great One” came walking down to the ring. The Rock then attacked his former protégé and left him down and out in the ring in a brutal attack. The very next week Maven challenged The Rock to a traditional Survivor Series match and if Maven’s team wins, he wants The Rock in a one on one contest to see who is better. Rock laughs before accepting. Over the course of the next week the teams were made and Rock made quite a formidable team as along with himself, he recruited one half of the tag team champions Sean O’Haire, blossoming star John Cena, F.B.I Nunzio and the Samoan Monster Rikishi. Maven’s team was the other half of the tag team champions Rey Mysterio, mis-understood star Rhyno, ex-United States champion Eddie Guerrero and the pay-per-view return of Edge. Which team would come out the victor?

John Cena & Rhyno being involved in the Survivor Series was all shrouded in mystery after John Cena faced Rhyno in a single match on the first Smackdown after No Mercy and seemed to have the match won when a masked man attacked both men. Cena was furious and tried to chase the masked man before going back to the ring and FUing Rhyno in frustration. The confusion continued the next week as Cena and Rhyno demanded to know who the masked man was but Cena soon turned on Rhyno by accusing the “Man Beast” of paying the masked man to stop him from losing against Cena. Rhyno denied this but as what happened last month with Maven, he wasn’t believed. Cena then announced that he would be on Team Rock but only because Rhyno had agreed to be on Team Maven because Cena wanted to prove that Rhyno was behind the masked man and Cena put more punctuation to this point when he attacked Rhyno backstage on the last Smackdown before Survivor Series but only after he lost a match against Rey Mysterio with thanks to the “masked man”.

The tag team champions were also dragged into the Survivor Series match as O’Haire and Mysterio were scheduled to face each other on the 10/30 Smackdown which caused confusion when O’Haire saved Mysterio from an attack from WGTT but promised that was due to the match the next week. The match between the two was a good, exciting match which ended with O’Haire pulling off the victory. This obviously led to a huge celebration by O’Haire demanding that he is the “sole tag team champion” but Mysterio comes down and congratulates O’Haire before telling him that he will be watching his next match, O’Haire won the match but only just thanks to trying to impress his “partner” and O’Haire told Mysterio he had to do the same and Mysterio agreed. Mysterio then went on to defeat John Cena with thanks to interference from a masked man. However Mysterio pulled double duty when O’Haire & Mysterio faced the World’s Greatest Tag Team and managed to defeat them but something annoyed O’Haire and he left Mysterio to be attacked by Haas & Benjamin. However the attack was stopped by Kidman & London whilst O’Haire continued to berate Mysterio.

Eddie Guerrero was asked to be on Maven’s team on the last Smackdown before Survivor Series and even though Chavo Guerrero tried his best to talk Eddie out of it, Eddie agreed. Speaking of Chavo Guerrero, he had a big match at Survivor Series as he was going to face United States champion Chris Benoit. The match itself was made on the first Smackdown after No Mercy after Chavo berated Eddie for not retaining the US title at No Mercy but Eddie’s “friend” Chris Benoit interrupted the argument and told a cowering Chavo that he will be him at Survivor Series to shut him up once and for all. Chris Benoit showed his toughness the next week when he beat A-Train despite interference from Chavo Guerrero and before long Chavo & Benoit were fighting to which Eddie came running down. However Eddie seemed torn as to who he was helping before finally breaking up the fight and then just walking out on the fight, to confusion from everyone. The next week Chavo continued to berate Eddie and put him down when Benoit tried to talk Eddie around and get him to stand up for himself but Eddie refused saying that Chavo was just looking out for him, this will be tested as both Guerrero’s are in different matches and although Chavo has promised to be the only Guerrero with gold, will Chavo get what he wants?

Jamie Noble was seemingly screwed out of his Cruiserweight title shot at No Mercy and he was livid on the Smackdown after. He demanded that whoever attacked him come down to the ring and face him but when nobody answered he promised to find them, this was when surprisingly Steve Corino stopped Noble and agreed that it wasn’t fair and that Ultimo Dragon is just as annoyed before telling Noble that he will get another title shot tonight, this seemed to improve Noble’s mood. Noble’s mood would descend deeper however when the match was ended in disqualification when Akio again got involved and attacked Jamie Noble but didn’t attack the champion. Corino & Ultimo were left confused as Akio then ran off. The next week and the accusations were flying when Noble pointed the finger at Ultimo & Corino saying they had something to do with it. Corino denied the accusation and pointed out that they were happy to put the title on the line last week before Corino was interrupted by the full debut of Akio. Akio was on the titantron and said that Noble doesn’t deserve to be the Cruiserweight champion, he does and Corino has already promised him a title shot at Survivor Series?! Corino promises that he hasn’t but Noble just hits the PayDirt on Corino as Akio laughed on, confessing that he was just joking and Noble’s fury seemed to grow. Akio then promised Noble that he will face him in the ring on the next weeks Smackdown. Noble then waited until the next Smackdown but as he waited in the ring, Spanky came out and said he had a match with Noble?! Noble refused to fight Spanky as he has done before and goes to walk out of the match when an angry Steve Corino comes out and says that he is sick of Jamie Noble and at Survivor Series it will be Jamie Noble versus Ultimo Dragon versus Akio versus Spanky for the Cruiserweight title! There was a tag team match in which Ultimo Dragon & Spanky def. Jamie Noble & Akio when Akio refused to come to the ring. Akio however did get involved at the end of the match and attacked Noble. Ultimo & Spanky stopped Akio but were thanked by Noble with a PayDirt to Spanky and a clothesline out of the ring for Ultimo as Noble fumed that he would get revenge on everyone.

The final match for the Smackdown side of Survivor Series would be the grudge tag team match between the World’s Greatest Tag Team and Billy Kidman & Paul London. It actually started with the Basham Brothers demanding another title shot because Kidman & London cost them their title shot and Heyman agreed before promising the Basham Brothers a match against the tag team for revenge. The match would be end in a no contest when World’s Greatest Tag Team came down and attacked both teams with weapons. The Basham’s were furious and demanded a shot at the tag titles but Heyman refused, saying that they need to earn their title shot. The Basham’s were shocked thinking they already had but Heyman informed them they hadn’t and also informed them that Kidman & London would be facing WGTT at Survivor Series. WGTT promised to end Kidman & London’s careers at Survivor Series before losing to the tag team champions and attacking Rey Mysterio. Kidman & London would save Mysterio and both teams would disappear to the back fighting.

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

    Survivor Series Build Up Review

Very good change up with Rikishi dropping out of the title picture and I can see that this match will probably be a hard earned defence for Undertaker, dont see any point in having Taker drop the belt a month on

As for Rikishi, it makes sense that he will drop into a decent mid card feud with Edge. Rikishi reminding me a lot of Mark Henry with this Hall Of Pain style gimmick.

Rock/Maven , is it me or does it sound really comical that Maven wants to face The Rock and thinks he can match him, but Nunzio in the teams looks really odd and Iove that you put the tag champs on opposite sides, could see it as a great segment where Rock and Maven argue back and for and one picks the tag champ and one the other

The masked man, have no idea who this could be and it adds another outlet to SS, perhaps Cena chases him off getting counted out

Chavo getting a big push with a match against Benoit, dont expect him to win but expect him to put up a fight and maybe refuse a handshake from the Rabid Wolverine at the end

Akio is a great addition to the CW division and the build up to the four way was probably the best build up of any match in my opnion, with intrigue, controversy, lack of trust and action all packed in

The tag team match between WGTT and Kidman/London is highly anticipated and I have a feeling The Bashams will end up getting involved

    Survivor Series PPV Review

I thought you could have given a bit more info on the Survivor Series PPV, for example Ultimo Dragon winning is all good but what happened with Noble and Akio, would have been good if you either added it or put the PPV as a seperate post entirely

WGTT and Kidman/London will continue by the looks of things

Rikishi was dominant in the Survivor Series match until Edge did what he promised, Rock pinning Maven before getting dumped out by Edge (who looked impressive eliminating Rock, Rikishi and Edge) was great but Maven versus The Rock is set now

Raven was very unexpected and I hope you can do something unique with him as he has all the skills to be a top performer if giving the platform to speak

Can expect to see some Raw interaction now that Lesnar went and ended Austins job, and attacked HBK

Benoit retained but did anything happen afterwards or during, hopefully you clear this up in the next post

And you left Kurt Angle off the title match, Heyman getting involved is typical and this should be a interesting move forward with Heyman aligned with Lesnar and then Lesnar helping a guy who Heyman despises (Bischoff) keep his job

Looking forward to the next installment DE, very good start

Just a small irritant from me, why are you not giving details about the matches in this BTB when you did in Smackdown Six? But I liked the way this went. Edge looking dominant in the SS match, especially getting the pin on Rock, Brock Lesnar getting involved with HBK(Brock vs HBK at WM XX, anyone?), and I just all around liked the way this was built up. Good job here

Every time I read one of your projects, never disappointed & already from what I have read as they say this is a page turner, you can't wait to read on & find out what will transpire next. I am looking forward to seeing whether Brock Lesnar & Stone Cold Steve Austin have more then a stare down & where you may take this story line. One thing I know it will be worth the anticipation & can't wait. Always have been fans of Benoit & Guerrero so bit of looking back at what you two with two my my favorites in the ring. Good to see Maven get a run even though it is not a winning note, but who knows maybe you may allow Maven to blossom in your BTB. What ever direction you take this BTB from the early states I can see that will be another top shelve project.

Thanks for all the comments, they are what strive me on and I love hearing what you guys think of my project so keep them coming.

Wasteland that is only where I am catching everyone up to where I am because as of Wrestlemania I should be doing more detail into it, unless like I said I find the monthly recaps a lot easier to write.

Hopefully this post has answered all the questions Sykotic, I remember you being a big reviewer of Smackdown Six so I always appreciate what you have to say. I was posting it like this the whole time so that was why I just put the results in the last post.

Thank you Jimmie and I am glad you are enjoying it so far. I also remember you commenting on Smackdown Six so it is always good to get those loyal readers back in lol. I like to take those wrestlers or characters that I feel I can branch out and make into something better than what they were, whether I fully do that with Maven or not will remain to be seen but I enjoy debuting people and making them my own.

Smackdown In-depth details of Survivor Series

Cruiserweight action opened the 2003 Survivor Series and the action was fast paced with Ultimo Dragon and Spanky taking the match to the air whilst Akio & Jamie Noble kept the action grounded. At first Akio tried his best to stay out of Noble’s way as Noble tried to fight his way to the man that has continuously attacked him. Dragon and Spanky had their own missions however as they fought brutally with Noble with Noble taking to his more hardcore style. The match would never seem to have a single man on top until the final moments when Noble seemed to finally get his hands on Akio but as Noble was about to get a decent amount of revenge on Akio as he went for the PayDirt on the outside, Spanky flew over the top rope with an amazing springboard Senton Bomb onto both men. The crowd were going crazy at this point and Spanky rolled back into the ring when Ultimo Dragon caught Spanky with the Dragon Bomb and covered for the victory. The crowd enjoyed the match but watched on as Akio & Noble then began to continue to fight after coming to and had to be separated by referee’s to try and stop the fight.

During the pay-per-view Chavo Guerrero continued to try and talk Eddie Guerrero out of the elimination match later on in the night and help his cousin beat Benoit. Eddie refused however saying that he wanted to help Maven and he hoped Chavo understood. Chavo didn’t seem to understand and walked into a good match with the United States champion Chris Benoit. Chavo looked close to winning the match after sneakily low-blowing Benoit and going for his own Frog Splash but Benoit moved. This was when Benoit sealed the victory when he locked in the crossface and Chavo screamed in pain before tapping out. Benoit celebrated the victory but the camera would mostly catch Chavo screaming in fury up the ramp that Eddie should have helped and that this wasn’t over. Benoit smiled at Chavo throwing the tantrum but Chavo would begin to have some revenge on his uncle later on in the night.

Brock Lesnar recaptured his WWE title over The Undertaker and Kurt Angle when The Undertaker hit the Last Ride on Kurt Angle and seemed to have got the match won. This was when Paul Heyman first seemed to interject his way into the match as he stood on the stage. Undertaker saw this and was ready to fight but that was when Lesnar took advantage and lifted Undertaker up for the F5 and hit it before covering and it looked like Angle would break up the count but Heyman would stop him from getting in the ring and the count was made, Lesnar got back his title. Lesnar celebrated like crazy as the crowd booed and Lesnar allows Heyman to lift his hand into the air as something evil seems to have reared its head. After this match however we saw that Brock Lesnar bumped into the “rattlesnake” Stone Cold backstage whilst celebrating and Austin said something along the lines that he knew something was bad about Lesnar. Lesnar got in the face of Austin and Austin seemed to dare Lesnar to “take a shot” but after a while Austin walked off leaving a furious Lesnar with Heyman who was already talking Lesnar out of anything with Austin but Lesnar was fuming leaving questions as to what he would do. We had the answers by the end of the night as Shawn Michaels seemed to be making a great comeback in the main eventing 5 on 5 elimination match as HBK had just eliminated Chris Jericho to bring the odds from 3 on 1 to just him and Orton. The crowd were really into the match as Orton went for the cross body which knocked down the referee. HBK, a bloodied and battered mess, willed himself up and was calling for the Sweet Chin Music when Eric Bischoff snuck in and kicked at Michaels. This was the last straw for Austin who came in and took down Bischoff before hitting a furious stunner on Orton which sent him across the ring! Austin continued to fight with Bischoff on the outside as HBK went to crawl on top of Orton when the huge figure of Brock Lesnar slid into the ring and as JR was screaming about what was going on, Lesnar hit the F5 on HBK!! Lesnar disappeared almost as quickly as he appeared and Orton covered HBK for the three count and thus fired Stone Cold from the WWE in a shock ending to the pay-per-view!

The big match before the finale was Team Maven against Team Rock and what a topsy turvy match we had. The first elimination was the obvious one as Nunzio was pinned by Eddie Guerrero, with many questioning why he was in the match at all. However controversy started to rear its head as Eddie Guerrero was about to try and hit the Frog Splash on Rikishi when Chavo came running down pretending that he was hurt. Eddie started to argue with Chavo and jumped down before turning into a superkick from Rikishi and Eddie Guerrero was eliminated thanks to the distraction from his “ally” Chavo. Rikishi refused to get out of the ring as Mysterio jumped in and O’Haire wanted in. Rikishi was destroying Mysterio when Mysterio started to fight back, that was until he ran into a clothesline from his tag team partner Sean O’Haire. This gave Rikishi an easy opportunity to hit the Rikishi Driver and get another elimination on his belt. Rikishi was really rolling now and took the fight to the rough and tumble of Rhyno. Rhyno tried for a Gore which knocked down Rikishi but Rikishi just got back up before hitting another Rikishi Driver on Rhyno and getting the elimination as Rock continued with a huge smile on his face. This was when Edge jumped into the ring and the two men that everybody wanted to see against each other, stood at opposite ends of the ring. Edge sprinted at Rikishi and ducked Rikishi’s right handed punch and just chopped at Rikishi’s large stomach. Edge continued with a strategy of aiming at Rikishi’s stomach but Rikishi would always power out of any moves that could have been tried. Rikishi was looking for the superkick when Maven seemed to say something that caught Rikishi’s attention. That slight distraction worked however as Edge sprinted across the ring and hit a huge spear which exploded the crowd and Edge quickly dove and hooked the leg for the elimination that probably got the biggest cheer of the match! Edge went to try and turn his attentions back to the match but he couldn’t for long because Rikishi grabbed Edge and threw him into the steel steps before hitting a nasty sounding Superkick on the young star. The match continued however as Maven was left to be ganged up on by Rock, O’Haire and Cena. Maven tried to hold his own though and surprised everyone when he suddenly small packaged O’Haire and got a three count. The crowd came alive again for this but soon were disappointed as Rock waited behind Maven and hit the Rock Bottom as Maven turned around from the elimination of O’Haire and hooked the leg for the three count and sent Maven packing. This left a battered Edge for Rock & Cena and they both looked ecstatic about it as they toyed with him until Rock seemed to look for the Rock Bottom which awakened Edge, who turned Rock around and hit the Edgecution and quickly got the three count and shock elimination of the Rock. This left two of the WWE’s brightest stars in the ring together as it was down to Edge & Cena, would these two be main eventing together one day? They brawled for now and it looked to be completely open as the match began to wind down. Cena lifted Edge up for the FU but Edge slid out of it before going for the Edgecution. Both men were locked in duel when Edge ducked and went for the spear but Cena dove from it and then hit the FU to a mixed reaction from the crowd. Cena slowly went for the cover when the referee was suddenly pulled out of the ring by a masked figure before throwing across the outside. Cena looked up only to be smashed over the head with a kendo stick which had people rumbling as to who it was before the masked figure pulled the unconscious Edge onto Cena and threw the referee back into the ring before backing up the walk way as the referee counted the three and gave Edge the final fall and most importantly, Maven the win! Everybody was happy yet confused as Cena stared down the walkway furious when the masked man took off what was obscuring his face to show the face of the evil Raven! Cena was in shock as were the more wrestling savvy of the crowd as ECW chants erupted…

From Survivor Series to Smackdown December 4th Special

After a massive event like Survivor Series, fans of the blue brand knew that Smackdown would not be receiving a pay-per-view until Royal Rumble on January 25th. The decision was made to make a small “special” before the new year. Many big matches were made for the special but more of that later. The 11/20 episode of Smackdown was dominated by the hype of hearing exactly why Brock Lesnar aligned with Paul Heyman and stole the WWE title from the Undertaker at Survivor Series. The end of the show was when everybody finally got a glimpse of the new WWE champion as Paul Heyman came down to the ring and first of all said that he only stepped in because he wanted the champion that Smackdown deserved and that everybody should be ready for the “real” Brock Lesnar. Lesnar then came down to the ring with the WWE championship around his waist. Lesnar stepped into the ring and Heyman left it for Lesnar to tell the waiting crowd. Lesnar didn’t disappoint and told everybody about how he had become weak, allowing the Undertaker to take the WWE title off of him. He blamed the fans for allowing it to happen and then cheering a man that didn’t care that he won the title thanks to Lesnar being distracted but now boo Lesnar because he won in a similar way. Lesnar will continue to say about how Kurt Angle had tried to injure Lesnar and even kept Lesnar off of Smackdown a few shows this year and nobody did anything, Lesnar had to take on stupid odds by putting his title on the line against Big Show & A-Train, Big Show & Kurt Angle, numerous triple threat matches and even against a man whose sole goal has been to injure the whole roster. Lesnar demands the fans boo him because he doesn’t need them on his side and now he is here to fight his way, something that Stone Cold found out at Survivor Series. Austin questioned the “real” Brock Lesnar and Lesnar punished Austin the best way he can, he got his ass booted out of the WWE! Lesnar agreed that he would rather have destroyed Eric Bischoff too but Austin tried to be clever and dared Lesnar to take a shot, well Lesnar took his shot! That’s when The Undertaker seemed to have heard enough as his music hit and the crowd cheered and Undertaker demanded his rematch against the “real” Brock Lesnar and promised to bring Lesnar back down to Earth. That is when Heyman got his voice back and says that if Undertaker wants his rematch, it needs to be special and says that the December 4th Smackdown special will be Undertaker against Brock Lesnar in a Buried Alive match for the WWE title! Lesnar & Undertaker both seemed to like this as Lesnar promised to bury Undertaker’s career and keep his WWE title!

The week before the Smackdown special was next for both men and they were not at the Smackdown show surprisingly but both men filmed backstage vignettes that garnered praise from most of the wrestling community. They were shot in a “candid” interview style in which Lesnar sat in what looked like a gym and explained that the WWE title was his and he was in a no-lose situation at the Smackdown special. Lesnar also points out that Undertaker knows what a Buried Alive match is like whereas Lesnar is in new ground and he is going to prove just like he did when he stepped into the Hell in a Cell with Undertaker before, who the best is. Lesnar promises to bury the Undertaker and continue letting out the rage that eats away at Lesnar for everything he feels went wrong against him since Wrestlemania. Undertaker’s was slightly different in which he acknowledged that he had been in Buried Alive matches before and he knew how brutal they were but he was not going to dwell on them because Lesnar is a new animal that can’t be compared to anyone before. Undertaker apologises to all those out there that like to see the freak of nature that is Brock Lesnar in the WWE because he will bury him alive and take the WWE title. Undertaker even went as far as to say that this isn’t really about the WWE title but the culmination of the battles they have had in the past and that the famous Hell in a Cell match between the two may have seemed to be the end but this Buried Alive match will be the final match and Undertaker promises a blood bath.

The December 4th show came and the anticipation was for the main event as we had more hype and repeats the interviews from the previous week. Those expecting a brutal and violent match then they would have been satisfied as Lesnar and Undertaker used weapons and most prominently a shovel which soon busted both Undertaker & Lesnar and there was an amazing moment when it looked like Lesnar was going to hit a huge F5 from on top of the dirt mound near the Smackdown titantron to the floor below. Both men took each other to the limit and it got to the point where Undertaker chokeslammed Lesnar into the open grave and Undertaker looked to start the burial. Suddenly a chair struck the back of the Undertaker and the crowd watches as Rikishi suddenly attacked the Phenom! Lesnar was shown scampering out of the open grave and crawling away as Rikishi suddenly superkicked Undertaker sending him into the open grave and then Rikishi smiled as he walked over to the nearby dump loader before dumping the mud onto the grave as the crowd were in stunned shock! Rikishi begins to laugh whilst looking down at the grave whilst Lesnar was shown with blood down his face and body and clutching the WWE title in what will go down as one of those pictures that will be seen for years to come.

The man that seemed out of this situation was Kurt Angle and on the first Smackdown after Survivor Series saw Angle furious at the outcome of his match of the triple threat match. Angle demanded that he wanted a match from Heyman, Heyman agreed to the match and it was poor cruiserweight Spanky that was drafted for the match. Spanky tried his best in the match but Angle’s fury was going to be felt and before long Angle had the Ankle Lock sinched into Spanky and Spanky screamed in pain before tapping. Angle had won the match but he wasn’t letting go, Spanky’s screams continued and finally after several referees pulled them apart Spanky instantly grabbed the ankle. Spanky was in trouble and the EMTs came rushing as Angle was showing his fury. Angle’s fury didn’t cease as the next week the Rock made sure that Maven had to face Angle in a match, to soften him up. Angle took it to Maven again and once again Angle tried to lock in the Ankle Lock but the referees were ready and separated them. Vince McMahon turned up and said he had no choice and had to suspend Kurt Angle from Smackdown! This wasn’t good for Angle’s temper as he promised to make Vince pay when he comes back. This angle was sadly for Angle to rest some nagging injuried with an expected returned for the Royal Rumble likely.

The build for Maven against The Rock was continuing as Maven promised to defeat the “Great One” and the match was made officially for the Smackdown special. The week after Survivor Series Maven came face to face with his ex-mentor and Maven promised to make Rock pay for everything he had done to him. Rock smirked before saying that Maven should thank him for everything he had done for him. Maven smirked and the was it for week one. Week two and not only did the Rock make sure Maven faced Kurt Angle but he set up a special video for Maven to see, which showed everything that Maven had done since The Rock “took him under his wing”. The accomplishments included a United States title shot, beating certain stars he had never done before and actually being paid attention to. The video took a darker turn as it showed Maven not siding for Rock, questioning the Rock and even turning his back on the Rock. The obvious point of the video was to show the Rock in a good light whilst putting Maven in the bad light. The match finally came and Rock faced Maven. This was the chance for Maven to make a name for himself and a chance of a life-time, to defeat the Rock! The match was hardly an open contest as Rock kept on top of Maven for most of it before he called for the Rock Bottom. Rock looked to hit the finisher when Maven suddenly ducked out of it and hit the Backstabber out of nowhere to which he covered for the shocking win! Maven defeated the Rock!

Another storyline that seemed to be gaining speed was John Cena, Raven and Rhyno. It continued to spiral as Cena furiously demanded that both Raven and Rhyno come down and explain themselves. Rhyno was the first to come down and he continued to plead his innocence at the whole thing but Cena refused to believe it and was just about to give Rhyno a tongue lashing when Raven’s music hit. Raven came down with a big smile on his face before slowly walking to the ring. He continued by saying that there are people in the crowd that may know him and there are people that may not know him, he is the wisest wrestler you will ever know. He is the man that has forgotten more about wrestling than both of the men in the ring and he is here for a “second coming”, he is here to take all of the young talent that are jaded and need guidance. Raven even went as far as to extend that to both men in the ring as he finally stood in the ring with both of them. Raven promised to show everybody the error of their ways and he counts John Cena and Rhyno in that category. Cena took all he could take and pushed Rhyno before swinging for Raven. Raven of course ducked and Rhyno gored Cena out of his boots! The question was whether or not Rhyno was aiming for Cena or Raven as Raven smiled up the ramp. Cena was back the next week and challenged both Rhyno and Raven to a triple threat match for the December 4th special and the challenge was accepted almost instantly by both men. Cena promised that he would take on both men and stop this “Second Coming” rubbish before it has even started. The next week was the match and it was a brawl as all three men seemed determined to beat each other down. The match had Cena refusing help from both men and continually taking cheap shots at each other. Cena was able to throw Rhyno out of the ring before lifting Raven up for the FU. Rhyno was back in the ring though and Gored Cena down, causing Raven to fall off his shoulders. Rhyno then set up for another Gore on Raven but Raven ducked from the Gore. Raven then began another brawl with Rhyno when suddenly Cena lifted Rhyno up and hit the FU before looking at Raven and stepping away?! Raven dove for the cover and got the win as Cena just watched on?! The crowd was confused when Raven and Cena stood face to face……and Cena shook the hand of Raven!! Raven now had his first “student”!

The United States champion Chris Benoit may have defeated Chavo at Survivor Series but it wasn’t the end. Chavo came out on the first Smackdown and instantly demanded that Eddie Guerrero join him in the ring. Eddie came down to the ring of course and Chavo was soon screaming at his uncle that he should have been there to help him with Chris Benoit at Survivor Series. Eddie tries his best to calm his nephew down but Chavo suddenly slapped Eddie as the crowd gasped! Eddie looked furious at the slap and the crowd were desperate for Eddie to take Chavo to school. Eddie however fought himself before letting his head drop and he just quietly left the ring and walked to the back. Chavo smirked evilly before telling the fans that the Guerrero’s keep their business to themselves. That’s when Chris Benoit’s music hit and the crowd exploded as Benoit came out and said that what he has done to Benoit’s friend is unforgiveable and Benoit tells Chavo that next week he will give him another shot at the title but this time Benoit is going to get revenge for his friend and make Chavo squeal like the little bitch that he is! The next week and as Benoit said there was a US title match and once again Benoit won the match, retaining the title. Eddie didn’t come out again and Chavo was furious about this. Benoit made Chavo tap to the crossface and Chavo throws that into the face of Eddie. Chavo told Eddie that it was because of Eddie being a loser that it has been infecting him but next week at the Smackdown special Los Guerrero’s will reunite as there is a huge fatal four way tag match for the titles and Eddie better help him win the match. The tag match made was a culmination of many things, one of them being the Basham Brothers. The Basham’s continued to demand a tag title shot from Heyman but Heyman felt untouchable thanks to his affiliation with Brock Lesnar and instead put the brothers in a match with AJ Styles & Amazing Red and then maybe Heyman will think about it. The Bashams were all over Styles & Red in their match and looked like they were about to finish off the tag team when the World’s Greatest Tag Team got involved. This caused Styles & Red to pull off an upset and beat the brothers! They wouldn’t feel like celebrating though as the Bashams would start to beat down the young team, that was until Kidman & London came down for the save and with WGTT running down also, a huge brawl broke out. The Basham Brothers again want a title shot but Heyman refuses, saying they lost to Styles & Red so why do they deserve one? Heyman instead puts them in another tag match and if the Bashams win this one, he may give them a title shot. The Bashams were facing Tajiri & Funaki and once again the Bashams were about to win when the World’s Greatest Tag Team stuck their noses in again, causing the Bashams to lose once again. The Bashams were furious and to make matters worse, Heyman came out on stage and took great delight in announcing that there would be a fatal four way tag team match at the Smackdown special for the tag team titles between O’Haire & Mysterio, Los Guerrero’s, Kidman & London and the World’s Greatest Tag Team!

Where were O’Haire and Mysterio in all this? Fighting amongst themselves as always! The Smackdown after Suvivor Series saw Mysterio team up with friend Edge as they faced Sean O’Haire and Rikishi in a feisty affair. Mysterio and Edge would come out the victors when Mysterio managed to pin O’Haire whilst Edge & Rikishi were continuing their war. O’Haire was obviously disappointed but Rikishi was a lot more disappointed as he began to attack O’Haire and was just about to hit the Banzai Drop on him when Edge & Mysterio both stopped Rikishi and fought him off. Did O’Haire show any thanks? No, he pushed both men away and stormed off. The next week O’Haire raged at Edge telling him that he never asked for his help and that he wanted to face him in a match tonight to show that he was the better man. Edge agreed and the match was made, which Edge won with a spear on O’Haire. O’Haire was furious and wanted to go after Mysterio who was watching at the commentators desk but Edge stopped him, instead O’Haire demanded another match against Mysterio for the Smackdown special but Mysterio reminded O’Haire that they couldn’t, they had a tag title match already. O’Haire says that the tag titles are more trouble than they’re worth. The Smackdown special saw the tag title match and it was a fantastic advert for what is a glowing tag team division on Smackdown. Every team looked like they could win the titles in this match, including the wary teams like Los Guerrero’s and the tag champions. The ending of the match was a sight to behold as Chavo was thrown to the outside by both Haas & Benjamin whilst Mysterio was hit with the three amigo’s by Eddie. Kidman & London were fighting with O’Haire near the announcers desk as Eddie climbed to the top rope and was calling for the Frog Splash. However O’Haire stopped him and pulled him down and brawled with him around the announcers desk which Kidman saw and jumped on the ring apron before turning and flying with an amazing Shooting Star Press on both men, sending all three through the announcers desk! Mysterio was trying to get back up when Chavo flew instead with the frog splash but before he could cover Shelton grabbed him and hit the T-Bone as Haas went for the cover. This was when London flew from the top rope with the 450 splash on both but as London was rolling around grabbing his stomach, he had the ring presence to roll Shelton up and get the count of three! Kidman & London won the tag team titles! London helped Kidman up as they celebrated with the titles and one team finally imploded and it wasn’t Mysterio & O’Haire. Chavo was furious and was screaming at Eddie for some reason, blaming the whole loss on him. Chavo told Eddie that he should have been there to stop the pin and Eddie tried to say that he had just been put through a table when Chavo suddenly attacked Eddie Guerrero. This time Chavo did not let up and by the time Chavo was done, Eddie was a bloody mess in the middle of the ring as the crowd booed Chavo out of the building and Los Guerrero’s officially ended…

The Cruiserweight’s were again at each other’s throats as Jamie Noble continued to demand a match with Akio, however Noble was left even more fuming as Akio refused because Noble was not the cruiserweight champion therefore not good enough to fit. Noble refutes this however and promises to beat Ultimo Dragon that very night and that Ultimo wouldn’t be walking by the end of the night. Another classic was then wrestled between Ultimo & Noble to which once again Noble came so close to beating Ultimo and finally getting that Crusierweight gold that had so eluded him so far. That was until Akio came down and cost Noble the match before running up the ramp laughing maniacally. Noble of course was not happy and promised his revenge. Noble was infuriated more the next week when he proposed to Heyman that he put Noble in a match against Akio in which the winner faces Ultimo Dragon for the cruiserweight title at the Smackdown special. Heyman didn’t go with the idea however and just handed the title shot to Akio instead citing that he had “impresse him lately”. Steve Corino and Ultimo went along with it despite Corino thinking that Noble against Dragon is always a great seller. Noble dug his own hole though and told Corino to “shut it” and got into Ultimo’s face and promising that he will face him again and beat him. The Smackdown Special came and the cruiserweight match was a very good match, for the time they were given. It was the sort of taster you get that makes you want to see what would happen if they were given longer time and on a PPV. Ultimo & Akio showed both their high-flying prowess and both had moments where the crowd thought they had won it, even with Akio flying with the corkscrew moonsault but that was when Jamie Noble appeared. Noble came running down and pulled Akio off as the referee looked in confusion. Noble then snapped Akio’s head on the ropes and Akio bounced back into Dragon hitting the Dragon Bomb and the win to retain the title. Noble then slid in and went after Akio in anger but Akio had already run away as Noble is going crazy but Ultimo & Corino are trying to calm the enraged wrestler down. Noble didn’t listen however and instead attacked both men leaving them down and out in the ring before storming off as Akio looked back and laughed at the carnage he had made.

Also something began on Smackdown special as Paul Heyman suddenly decided he wanted to “give Benoit more competition for the US title”. Benoit said that was fine but he wanted a chance at the WWE title. Heyman laughed in Benoit’s face before telling him he is nowhere near good enough to challenge for the title and he will prove that tonight because Benoit will face Rikishi. Benoit faced Rikishi in which Rikishi tried to dominate Benoit but Benoit would continue to fight back before Benoit flew with the headbutt and got the win over the Samoan Monster! Rikishi was furious by this however and attacked the US champion before hitting the Banzai Drop on him as the crowd chanted for Edge to come out. He did finally and brawled with Rikishi to the back until Heyman suddenly came from out the back and announced that Benoit would now put the US title on the line against anybody that wanted a shot at it! Suddenly a young rookie came running down that Michael Cole told us was WWE rookie Matt Morgan!! Morgan stepped into the ring and waited for Benoit to get to his feet before hitting with a huge bicycle kick and then covered to steal the US title away from Benoit as Heyman was shown looking evil at the top of the stage.

    Smackdown Special – December 4th 2003

Ultimo Dragon defeated Akio to retain the Cruiserweight championship
Kidman & London defeated Los Guerrero’s, World’s Greatest Tag Team & Sean O’Haire & Rey Mysterio to win the tag team titles
    Maven defeated The Rock
    Chris Benoit defeated Rikishi
Matt Morgan defeated Chris Benoit for the United States championship
Raven defeated John Cena & Rhyno
Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker in a Buried Alive match to retain the WWE championship

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

Thanks for all the information on Survivor Series, I see you copied Raw side of things exactly barring the ending to the Survivor Series elimination match which originally had Batista involved.

Edge has grown big time but I expect that there is more to come between Rikishi and Edge in the form of a one on one match. Nice comment on Edge and Cena main eventing

Benoit has no challenger at the moment, as I expect Guerreros will be busy with each other myabe Rhyno will get an opportunity.

Cruiserweight division is great as there is not only a champion feud that will likely take place, but a side feud also between Noble and Akio. Two feuds in the cruiserweight division is good for its appeal

Ravens first promo should be an epic to read and this could be a great feud between the hardcore star and the thug of the WWE

I expect that HBK will turn up on Smackdown soon, but what will happen to both Undertaker and Angle who were screwed by Heyman. Big change though because Survivor Series 2003 was Takers last appearance as the American Biker.

Now onto the next post and interested to see what leads into this special Smackdown

Haha got trolled their as you make the Buried Alive match for the special but Lesnar facing Taker instead of McMahon, wonder whether Kane will be the deciding factor again or will the Phenoms return be to reclaim Lesnars soul

Oh even bigger swerve, DE you got me. Rikishi is a completely different kettle of fish and I guees this time he didnt 'Do it for The Rock'

Angle taking his frustration out on poor Spanky, a few weeks rest is probably good for the Olympic Hero but I am a bit worried that we dont have either The Undertaker or Angle on Smackdown for a month or more

Maven just had to win over The Rock, otherwise the whole angle would be lost and I guess Rock wil be calling this one a fluke

Excellent move with Raven becoming the Teacher, he is as he said a wise individual and Cena could be something quite unique under the tutelage of Raven. Rhyno and Cena most likely to go at it again, poor Rhyno, very misunderstood

Tag division looks like it has come on leaps and bounds as you mentioned at least six top tag teams in the run up to the four way, you know by my on work I am a big believer in tag teams. Kidman and London are a great choice for champions and now that Los Guerreros and the champs are gone, there is room for the likes of The Bashams and the Amazing Red/ Styles team to put their case across for the belts.

Cruiserweight build was good and Noble is great as the moaning psychopath, its great that Akio and Noble are feuding after once being team mates in the Jung Dragons, I gather that is why you put them up against one another. Triple threat might be the way to end all this carnage and arguing

At first I thought that Rikishi would be Benoits next opponent but you squashed that immediately with the introducton of Matt Morgan, getting the title off of a veteran like Benoit. Morgan could be a big star for Smackdown.

Heyman though is rightfully a tyrant, he has pissed off Undertaker, Benoit, Angle, The Bashams and Jamie Noble. He will get his comeuppance though

Great post Darkest and looking forward to the road to the Royal Rumble and it will be very interesting if you pick one of your guys to win it or let Raw take the ball. My preference is that HBK wins it and comes over to take on Lesnar.

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

Thanks for the review again Sykotic and I am glad you are enjoying it and I hope the Rumble is in-depth enough because if I went into any more detail then I would have ended up just writing the whole match! I also didn't put any detail into the other matches as there is nothing you really needed to know.

    It’s time! It’s Rumble time!
    Road to the Royal Rumble

Coming out of the Smackdown special, everybody was talking about Rikishi burying the Undertaker alive. It was the total buzz of the 12/11 Smackdown and it was not long before the “Samoan Monster” himself came stomping down to the ring and grabbed a microphone. Rikishi would then go on a big tirade on how the past year has been about respect for Rikishi and he started the year with no respect from anybody. Rikishi then explains that he decided to get his own respect by destroying everybody in his way and one of those men was the Undertaker. The Undertaker is the most respected man in the locker-room and he refused to respect Rikishi no matter what he did and Rikishi promised that now that Undertaker is in the ground, everybody out there respects him. Everybody who wants to survive the year 2004 better respect him because Rikishi is going to be even badder next year and that is a promise. The crowd then exploded as Edge’s music hit and Edge came out saying that these two had unfinished business and that everybody can be scared of Rikishi but Edge isn’t, Edge is fuelled with revenge. Rikishi laughs before saying that he is done with Edge and is focusing on the Royal Rumble and will be next to face the WWE champion at Wrestlemania. Edge had to find other ways to try and get Rikishi back in the ring but he wouldn’t have to wait long because the monster attacked him backstage the next Smackdown and threw him face first through a window in a brutal attack. Rikishi would then lift Edge’s head up by his hair before telling him that he will watch him destroy Funaki, who he was facing later on in the night. Of course Rikishi destroyed Funaki in the match and defeated him before trying to hit the Banzai Drop on Funaki. In a show of great guts and will, Edge would come stumbling down to the ring and try and fight with the big man. Rikishi easily disposed of Edge and hit the Banzai Drop on the young star, leaving him on the last Smackdown of the year (that wasn’t a crappy “best of” episode) in a pool of his own blood and seemingly badly hurt yet again.

Rikishi would start the year 2004 bragging about once again injuring Edge and then re-iterating his point that he will win the Royal Rumble and main event Wrestlemania for the first time in his career. After that Rikishi instead destroyed more wrestlers week in and week out before the Rumble match itself. Rikishi even went as far as to come face to face with the WWE champion Brock Lesnar and promise to face him at Wrestlemania and also mentioning that Lesnar not facing a challenger at the Royal Rumble was a joke but of course Lesnar had Heyman in his corner for that one.

Lesnar’s attention however had been turned by Paul Heyman and his new vendetta against Chris Benoit. Heyman for some reason was trying everything he could to stop Benoit from achieving anything and it began at the Smackdown special with the debut of the monster Matt Morgan. Matt Morgan would come out on Smackdown decked in a suit and standing next to Paul Heyman before announcing that he was Heyman’s “Head of Staff” and also the new United States champion. This brought out the dethroned champion as Chris Benoit would come out and say that Morgan never won the US title in a match but was practically given the title. Benoit however said that seeing as Morgan is the United States champion then nothing is stopping Benoit from challenging for the WWE championship. Heyman laughed at this and told Benoit that he is nothing in the WWE and loses to debuting superstars! Heyman instead puts Benoit in a handicap match against the “real” Brock Lesnar and Matt Morgan later that night. Benoit would put on a great fight but the odds soon took its toll and obviously being in the ring with the WWE champion didn’t help, Benoit lost the match. Not only did he lose the match but Lesnar and Morgan beat him to a bloody pulp in the ring before Morgan took the opportunity to show everyone the “Mount Morgan Drop” and then stood over Benoit with the US title held high. The next week and Benoit showed his defiance to Heyman which only got him into trouble as when he first got to Smackdown he was already in a handicap match against Big Show & A-Train but it was soon built upon as now Brock Lesnar & Matt Morgan were added to the match to make it 4 on 1! For the second week in a row, Benoit was picked apart and was defeated. The attack continued after the match and the Rabid Wolverine was soon chokeslammed off the stage as Heyman looked on, enjoying every second.

The next week came and once again Benoit walked into a handicap match against two of the biggest men on the roster, this time against Big Show & A-Train. However before walking into the match Benoit gave a stark warning to Heyman, that it doesn’t matter what match he puts him in Benoit will walk into the Royal Rumble and win before taking the WWE title away from Heyman’s precious sidekick Brock Lesnar. Benoit would lose the match once again and once again after the match he was attacked but this one had a motive as Brock Lesnar came walking down and held a battered Benoit in the corner for Heyman to take great pleasure in getting in his face and telling him that as long as Heyman is breathing Benoit will never face Lesnar for the WWE title! Benoit would once again have an impossible task given to him as we drew nearer to the Rumble as he was put in a match against the US champion Matt Morgan for the title, the catch? It was a lumberjack match……with the lumberjacks being Brock Lesnar, Big Show, A-Train and the F.B.I. Benoit would give it his best shot and even locked in the crossface on Morgan during the match but soon enough Morgan was helped to retain the US title and yet another beatdown was given to Benoit and yet another week with him out in the ring. As if the games were not enough, just 2 weeks away from the Rumble Benoit was put in a tag team match against Matt Morgan and Brock Lesnar…his partner being the commentator Michael Cole. There was also a catch the match. It seems that Heyman couldn’t stop Benoit from being in the Rumble but he can try and screw him as if he lost the tag team match, Benoit would be the number 1 entrant in the Royal Rumble. Benoit fought gallantly and took on both Lesnar and Morgan together as much as he could and looked like he was going to win but that was when Lesnar grabbed Michael Cole and forced the tag before destroying the announcer with an F5 to screw Benoit out of the match. Benoit just had to endure one more week of the torture as Heyman continued to gloat that Benoit was the number 1 entrant and then told Benoit that this week would be a warm up as he was in a battle royal match with Big Show, Brock Lesnar, Matt Morgan, A-Train and the F.B.I! Benoit was of course teamed up against but the match was made interesting when the F.B.I decided they wanted to win and attacked Big Show, A-Train, Matt Morgan and Brock Lesnar! This gave Benoit a chance and he took it as he fought hard to eliminate Matt Morgan and A-Train before Show & Lesnar could get the match back in order by getting rid of the F.B.I. This left it down to three and a mistake turn the tide as Lesnar went for a clothesline on Benoit but Benoit ducked and Lesnar clotheslined Show over the top rope! Benoit instantly scooped Lesnar over the top rope to win the warm up battle royal and allow him to finally stand tall for the first time in nearly two months. What could he possibly do though at the Royal Rumble? Especially with Lesnar not in a match and able to interfere in the Rumble whenever he wanted?!

The Rock refused to allow anybody to talk about Maven defeating him and Rock just wanted to concentrate on the Royal Rumble and going to Wrestlemania. However Maven would not Rock forget about the loss and Maven would push it a bit too far when he promised to win the Rumble. The next week Rock decided that enough was enough and wanted another match against Maven but Maven was instead put into a Royal Rumble qualifier match instead, to which he won to enter the Rumble. The Rock promised that he would eliminate Maven in the Royal Rumble but The Rock just laughed at this and promised to eliminate Maven instead.

Billy Kidman & Paul London won the tag team titles at the Smackdown special and that loss for O’Haire & Mysterio spelt the end of their “tag team”. This wasn’t helped by O’Haire coming down on the first Smackdown after the special and proclaiming that he carried the team and when it came down to it, Mysterio let the team down and instead thought of himself and O’Haire demanded that Mysterio come down to the ring! Mysterio came down to the ring and O’Haire got into Mysterio face before telling him that he is happy the team is over with and that they move on and seemingly offered to shake Mysterio’s hand? Mysterio took the hand with trepidation and with due course was lifted up for the “Prophecy” by Sean O’Haire, the battle lines had been drawn. The next week was another tirade from O’Haire on how he was the better man of the team and that he is finally rid of Mysterio. Mysterio would soon come running down to the ring though and tell O’Haire that they never found out who was the better man and so he challenged him to a match at the Royal Rumble, to which O’Haire refused because he wanted a piece of the Rumble match. Mysterio then changed the challenge and instead said that they have a match at the Rumble and the winner of the match go onto the Royal Rumble match. O’Haire thought about it before telling Mysterio that he is on but afterwards he is done with the little cruiserweight. We were then treated to a great promo between the two in which they ran down all those months ago when they started their game of one upsmanship. They ran down how they accidentally won the tag team titles and were forced to tag for those months before getting to where they are now. O’Haire promised to beat Mysterio at the Rumble but Mysterio also promised victory but instead went as far as to tell O’Haire that not only would he lose but then the egomaniac would have to watch backstage as Mysterio went onto win the Rumble, knowing Mysterio was the better man. The final game of one upsmanship did happen however as they were placed in separate matches on the final Smackdown before the Rumble in which O’Haire defeated Scotty 2 Hotty in a good time but Mysterio managed to defeat Nunzio in a quicker time. This left Mysterio looking the stronger going into the Rumble match which will decide which one of the ex-tag team goes onto the Rumble itself.

As for the tag team champions Billy Kidman & Paul London, they were ecstatic about winning the titles. They started to celebrate on Smackdown when they got their first true feel of what it is like to be champions when the Basham Brothers came striding down. They accused Kidman & London of not deserving the tag titles because the Bashams should have been in the match. This brings out the World’s Greatest Tag Team and tell the Basham’s that they never deserved a title shot and never earned one. This infuriated the brothers but Haas & Benjamin turned to Kidman & London and told them that they wanted a “piece” of them. Kidman & London promised to put the titles against anyone and this brought out Paul Heyman. Heyman said that they have had this roundabout going for too long now and so he makes World’s Greatest Tag Team against Kidman & London for next week but makes the Basham’s face AJ Styles & Amazing Red for tonight instead, the Basham’s are not happy about this! The Bashams will be even more angry now because WGTT cost them their match against AJ Styles & Amazing Red before running off and laughing. Well the Basham’s are evil and they soon chased after Haas & Benjamin before destroying them with chairs and leaving the out and bloody whilst screaming their outrage at the team. The next week saw the tag match between WGTT and Kidman & London and everybody was looking forward to the conclusion to a feud that had been going on for months now. They would have to keep waiting. The two teams were having a great match as they always do but that was when the Basham Brothers came walking down with steel chairs. They would proceed to hit every person in the match with chairs before going one further and putting Shelton Benjamin through the announce desk to walk out with an exclamation mark. The next week the Basham’s would demand a match against the tag team champions from Heyman but he again refused, telling them that instead they are in Royal Rumble qualifiers to which they continued on and won those matches. However on the same show WGTT would be in a match against Chuck Palumbo & Johnny Stamboli, to which the Basham’s walked down slowly to the ring whilst Haas & Benjamin finished the match with a win. What the Basham’s were doing would not be answered however as Kidman & London tried to attack the Bashams but the Bashams would soon over power the tag team champions and shock the crowd and World’s Greatest Tag Team as they grabbed the tag team champions and threw them off stage! The feud was then put on hold seemingly as Heyman announced that due to their actions the Basham Brothers have been suspended until the Royal Rumble and that the tag team champions won’t be able to return until the Royal Rumble. This left World’s Greatest Tag Team one thing to do, brag. They bragged that they are the last team standing and that one of them would be going to Wrestlemania for the WWE championship but before Wrestlemania they will take back their titles! No doubt there will be some serious rage let out in the Royal Rumble match if any of these 3 teams are in the ring at the same time.

Speaking of rage, Latino Heat was beaten down by his family member Chavo Guerrero at the Smackdown Special. Chavo would come out on the first Smackdown after to a massively negative response from the crowd. Chavo relished in this before telling everyone that his uncle Eddie Guerrero needed being put in his place especially as everybody loves him when it is Chavo that does all the work. Everything is always about his uncle Eddie and he is not going to hold him up anymore! This would bring out Eddie Guerrero to a huge cheer and Eddie tells his cousin that Eddie had nothing to do with Chavo not being able to beat Benoit. Chavo refused to believe this and told Eddie that he never helped Chavo like Chavo has helped Eddie and Eddie gets all the benefits. Eddie refused to be drawn into fighting his cousin, who he always thought of as a brother. Chavo then gets into his uncles face and tells him that when Chavo is done with his uncle he will go running back to mum crying. Chavo would then cheap shot his uncle and Eddie was down on the mat before staring angrily at his cousin, looking like he might explode. Edde was backstage the next week and says that Chavo will soon get his comeuppance and it doesn’t need to be Eddie that does it, instead he will concentrate on the Royal Rumble but that was when Chavo attacked and not only threw Eddie through a window but also with such velocity that he went through a wall and as Chavo screamed at him, EMTs rushed around trying to get an injured Eddie to the hospital. After the end of the year special, Chavo told Paul Heyman that because he has put Eddie in the hospital that he deserves a title shot against Ultimo Dragon. Heyman agrees and makes the match for that night. We were then treated to a great cruiserweight match which saw Ultimo Dragon hit the Dragon Bomb and retain his Cruiserweight title. Chavo looked furious after the match and even went as far as to attack Ultimo after the match. Chavo continued on his streak of annoyance as he said that he never wanted the cruiserweight title anyway but he could be a tag team champion or even WWE champion if he wanted. The week before the Rumble and Chavo was again bragging about attacking his uncle and putting him in the hospital when the crowd got a real treat, Eddie Guerrero returning! Eddie came walking down slowly and Chavo continued to taunt Eddie, telling him that everybody here knows that Eddie won’t touch him because he is family. Eddie says nothing before stepping into the ring and without a word just knocks Chavo down to a huge cheer! Chavo was shocked and bolted from the ring before Eddie slowly raised the microphone and told Chavo not to run too far because there is a match at the Royal Rumble signed and it will be Eddie vs Chavo and this time Eddie will beat Chavo up!

There was a huge shock to everyones system when John Cena joined the ranks with Raven. Raven announces that John Cena chose the right option and came to heard Raven’s advice. That’s when Rhyno came walking down and told Cena that he sold out his beliefs and that Cena should not join with Raven. Cena & Raven just look at each other before attacking the “Man Beast”. Cena and Raven would continue their dastardly ways the next week when they turned their attentions to poor AJ Styles and Amazing Red. They told the young tag team that they were only on Smackdown because everybody needed someone to laugh at and they were nothing more than comic relief. Styles and Red shook their heads before telling Raven that they have beaten the Basham Brothers twice now but Raven & Cena laugh before saying that nobody cared what they had done. Styles & Red told Raven & Cena that they should face them in the ring and Raven and Cena jokingly accept the challenge. Later that night Cena & Raven would defeat Styles & Red in their tag team match before attacking them after the match. They would continue their attack, busting both men wide open before Rhyno would run down to the ring. Raven & Cena were ready though and beat down Rhyno before Cena FUed Rhyno over the top rope and to the outside as Raven & Cena laughed about the mess they had caused. The next week Raven & Cena would name AJ Styles & Amazing Red are more names that they have made examples of but that was when Styles & Red and they instantly brawled before Rhyno came running down also. Rhyno would catch both men with Gores whilst Styles & Red grab microphones before promising to show which ones were being made examples of. This would lead to singles matches between Cena & AJ Styles and Raven & Amazing Red. Cena & Raven defeated them in both matches but after the Amazing Red match they continue to attack but that was when Rhyno would come down with the save before challenging Raven to a match for the next week, Raven strangely accepted. The match was a brutal smash mouth battle which wouldn’t have an ending thanks to Cena, Styles & Red all getting involved as all 5 men took it to each other. The week before the Rumble, Rhyno challenged Cena & Raven to a 3 on 2 handicap match but they refused saying they were in the Royal Rumble match. Rhyno continued to try and goad them into a match but Raven & Cena instead promised to meet them in the Rumble match.

One thing that had been lighting up Smackdown recently was the Cruiserweight title and Jamie Noble’s chase for it. The manager of the Cruiserweight champion would come out on Smackdown and say that Jamie Noble had crossed the line when he attacked him and Ultimo Dragon just for trying to calm him down. Corino promises that he will pay for attacking them and that was enough for Noble as he came stomping down to the ring. Noble takes no hesitation to get in the face of Corino and before Corino could say anything, Noble told him that he may have lost his temper but at least when he does something he does it face to face! Noble promises that if Ultimo or Steve want to take him on, he will destroy them but that is when the crafty Akio came out. Akio thanked Noble, Dragon & Corino for giving Akio the impression he wanted. He said that they were so easy to be “guided” into fighting amongst themselves and this is why finally next week, Noble will face him in the ring. Noble seemed to like this but Akio then said that if they asked him, he thought that Dragon & Noble should face each other that night to get their “frustrations” out. Noble agreed as did Corino and the match was made. Smackdown was then treated to the best match between Noble & Dragon as it played out brilliantly. The end of the match saw a great spot as Ultimo went to the top rope (after hitting the Dragon Bomb) and went for the Cancun Tornado but in perhaps the greatest reversal of the year, Noble kipped up and caught Dragon into the PayDirt before covering for his first win over the Cruiserweight champion! The crowd roared its approval at a great match but it all changed when Akio appeared at the top of the stage and just clapped. Jamie Noble would then face Akio in the ring the next week but before the match could even get started, debuting Sakoda slid into the ring and attacked Noble. Both Akio & Sakoda would then attack Noble until Ultimo Dragon came running down to the ring to make the save. Noble would come down the next week and say that he never asked for Dragon’s help and he doesn’t need it. Noble would then tell Akio that he doesn’t care if he needed the entire locker-room to face him, he will beat him regardless. That is when Akio & Sakoda both come out on the stage and say that Noble always says the same old tired stuff but he will never be Cruiserweight champion and he will never beat Akio! Noble instead had a proposal for Akio saying that if he could beat Akio & Sakoda in a handicap match then he gets a match against Akio at the Royal Rumble. Akio would accept the challenge but he will have wished he hadn’t. Akio & Sakoda would face Noble in the handicap match but Noble would show great spirit and would end up winning the handicap match when he pinned Sakoda and Akio came to the realisation that he had to face Noble at the Royal Rumble…

    The Royal Rumble Match

The first two entrants were big entrants indeed as it was Smackdown’s Chris Benoit and RAW’s Chris Jericho. They wrestled brilliantly for the first 90 seconds and that was when Randy Orton would come out as the Rumble would start to kick it off a gear. There were fights and great moments in this Rumble, which will go down as a special Rumble. The first true confrontation of the Rumble was when Big Show entered the Rumble and he and Benoit fought across the ring. It looked like Big Show was about to eliminate Benoit when Paul London would come out and try and help Benoit. The match would continue and the crowd were loving things when we had the Basham Brothers, Billy Kidman, Paul London and the World’s Greatest Tag Team in the ring together. They would fight and fight violently before each and every one of them had spilled to the outside, all of them eliminated but that didn’t stop them from fighting all the way to the back. This would spell for the future of the match as Randy Orton would be attacked by the legend Mick Foley, who he had been torturing over on RAW. The Rumble took a turn for the worse for everyone involved when Rikishi came stomping out to the ring. As most would have anticipated, he completely dominated the ring. He would quickly eliminate 7 superstars before looking like he was about to eliminate Chris Benoit when the arena suddenly went dark and a gong was heard! The crowd went mental as a strange video was shown seemingly pointing towards the Undertaker and Rikishi looked furious at the very existence of the video. This gave Edge enough opportunity to knock Rikishi over the top rope and Nunzio was the poor man that came out next. Rikishi would then attack Nunzio and not even allow him to get into the ring before storming to the back, a very pissed off monster. There was more to come from this match as amazingly Benoit was still in the match when there were only a few people left to enter the Rumble. A new feud was born when Ric Flair seemingly came down and distracted Sean O’Haire for him to get eliminated?! This infuriated O’Haire and he got in the face of Flair before being attacked by Batista and Flair trying to fight with them all the way to the back. There was another moment when Raven stepped into the ring and came face to face with AJ Styles. They fought until Red came out and then Cena and then Rhyno. They fought but it was Raven that would survive the fight as all the other men would be eliminated. Raven looked very pleased and he did the Raven pose, only to be eliminated by the Big Show! It finally came down to the final two and it was The Rock and Chris Benoit after Rock did in fact eliminate Maven. They fought but Benoit was showing his tiredness and hooked Rock over the top rope. They struggled and fought before Rock tumbled out and the crowd went crazy for Chris Benoit winning the Royal Rumble and being the second man to enter first and win the whole thing!

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

Pretty good update, DE. I see you had Benoit win the Rumble, now hopefully he can move on to face Lesnar and beat him for the title at Wrestlemania, like he should have in the real world. not sure about Matt Morgan being the US Champ, though he can't be any worse than Orlando Jordan. It also seems like an Undertaker/Rikishi showdown is in the works as things proceeded the way they did, with Rikishi replacing Kane and Nunzio replacing Spike Dudley.

You've got some great angles going into Wrestlemania, I'm excited to see how they play out. Keep up the good work!

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

    Another great update DE

Start off with a negative though, did you not think that it was a bit overplayed that both Edge and Eddie got put through glass windows, I know that one went through the wall as well but you get my point.

The lead up to the Rumble was great and everybody had their part to play and the feuds filled out nicely but their was 19 Smackdown guys in the Rumble which is a bit of overkill, but hey this is a Smackdown BTB, maybe you could have had qualifiers between the tag teams and had one from each in the Rumble, just a sidethought

Benoit winning was like in real life but hopefully he does go after Lesnar this time, and it seems Eddie (who did go after Brock) has his own agenda at the moment and wont be going anywhere soon, this to me is the moment of change when Benoit chooses to stay on Smackdown

Raven and Cena have a very intriguing partnership and I wonder if one of Styles or Red may be persuaded to join them, seems a very logical way to part their team for a future singles run by Styles and or Red

Was really expecting O Haire to go into a heel run but his altercation with Flair and Batista has me thinking his partnership with Mysterio isnt finished but maybe OHaire could end up going on a big push as a face, I like that idea

CW division and Tag division as always are packed and Sakoda joining Akio is interesting as originally both came in as back up to Tajiri, Akio though is his own man but Noble finally cracked him a the Rumble.

Looking forward to the No Way Out pay-per-view and the expected obstacle Heyman puts in the way of Benoit, keep 'em coming

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

    The Last Stop Before ‘Mania
    No Way Out

Chris Benoit won the Royal Rumble and to the fury of Paul Heyman, he was booked at Wrestlemania for a WWE title shot. Heyman refused to allow Benoit to celebrate such a great feat like entering the Royal Rumble at number one and going onto win the Rumble, instead he made sure Benoit knew who was boss by putting him in yet another handicap match against Big Show and A-Train. Benoit however refused to have his mood ruined as he told Heyman that he could put him in whatever match he wanted, he is still going onto Wrestlemania to win the WWE title. Heyman promised to make sure that Benoit didn’t make it ‘Mania as the handicap match really took it out of Benoit. However the crowd got what they wanted when they had someone come and help Benoit, his best friend Eddie Guerrero! Eddie Guerrero had just come out of a fight with his cousin Chavo Guerrero and Eddie was soon in trouble with Heyman because of saving Benoit. Eddie Guerrero was about to be punished as much as Benoit as he was also put into handicap matches but luckily for Eddie, Benoit was there to help and they continued to try and help each other for the weeks going into No Way Out. However the whole situation was turned on its head when Paul Heyman announced that at No Way Out it would be Eddie Guerrero vs Chris Benoit, in an effort to split the friends up. With only 3 weeks of build up towards No Way Out from the Royal Rumble, the fans were looking forward to a match between Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit once again which has the opportunity to steal the show.

What was Brock Lesnar doing during all of this? He had his own problems to deal with. After the Royal Rumble Lesnar complained about having to face Benoit at Wrestlemania and instead said that he wanted Benoit to be stripped of the match. This brought out Edge who challenged Brock Lesnar to a match for the WWE title which in turn brought out The Rock who demanded a title shot. A match was made for that Smackdown and a great match ensued with Brock Lesnar being at ringside. Edge got as far as hitting the spear on Rock and looked to have the match won when Rikishi was shown walking down to the ring. Edge got up and started to trash talk with Rikishi before turning into the Rock Bottom and we have the Rock versus Brock Lesnar at No Way Out for the WWE championship! The crowd wasn’t sure about things as obviously both Lesnar & Rock were heels but The Rock just flat out promised to win the WWE championship and go onto Wrestlemania and defend it against Chris Benoit. Brock Lesnar on the other hand promised that the Rock would never be able to defeat the “real” Brock Lesnar. The last Smackdown saw a contract signing which ended in a brawl but ended with Rock being hit with the F5 and Lesnar screaming that the WWE title was his and only his.

As for the WWE tag team titles, WGTT were furious that the Basham Brothers cost them their tag team title shot at Wrestlemania. The Bashams took no time to come down to the ring and start a brawl with WGTT before Kidman & London came walking down to the ring and saying that they want challengers for No Way Out. The Bashams and WGTT pleaded their case but instead a match was made for that Smackdown to determine who gets to face the champions at No Way Out! The match between World’s Greatest Tag Team and the Basham Brothers was a great match but it definitely ended too soon as Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin’s game plan was to infuriate the Basham Brothers. They did just that and soon enough Doug Basham fell into the trap of keep attacking Haas whilst ignoring the referee’s count and the match was given to World’s Greatest Tag Team, they were going to No Way Out. The next week Haas & Benjamin immediately cut a promo about how they will take the tag team titles away from the glorified cruiserweights but Kidman and London soon came out and said that getting the Bashams disqualified may have got them the title shot but not at No Way Out because it will be a ladder match! The Basham’s on the other hand demanded another title shot but were instead put into a match against Chuck Palumbo & Johnny Stamboli and Scotty 2 Hotty & Funaki with the winner going onto Wrestlemania for a tag team title shot. There was just one week left before No Way Out and Kidman & London and the WGTT had a staredown before Haas & Benjamin promised to bring the prestige back to the tag titles after the last two sets of champions, Kidman and London however promise to retain in a match they know quite well. Bashams on the other hand promised to be going to Wrestlemania and finally get the tag team titles that have eluded them since they debuted in July. No Way Out will not only determine the tag team champions going into Wrestlemania but also who will face them.

In one of the constant highlights of the show, the Cruiserweight division was building around an elimination style match for the title at No Way Out. This was started when Steve Corino started to hype Ultimo Dragon’s performance in the Royal Rumble when Akio and Sakoda came walking down to the ring and totally pulled down Dragon’s great and underrated runs at the Cruiserweight champion. Dragon has been champion since Vengeance (July 2003) and had taken on all comers and Corino was not happy about these comments. Akio’s comments brought out Chavo Guerrero who promised to get a title shot at the cruiserweight title to which Noble came out and said that everybody is arguing about his belt! Corino said that there are many people in the cruiserweight division that deserve shots and they announce an elimination style match in which all cruiserweights will be involved and the final cruiserweight will be the cruiserweight champion. The announcement was thought to be confusing but a fun sounding match at No Way Out. The next week Akio would brag that he would win the cruiserweight and that everybody in the cruiserweight division are not in Akio’s league because they have all lost to Ultimo Dragon. Akio promises to be the cruiserweight champion. There were many more promos from the cruiserweights with the match circling around Akio, Ultimo Dragon, Jamie Noble, Rey Mysterio and Chavo Guerrero being favourites for the title but the question is whether or not Ultimo could keep the title until Wrestlemania.

Raven has made quite the splash since re-debuting in the WWE as he has recruited one of the biggest prospects in wrestling, John Cena. At the Royal Rumble Raven and John Cena were eliminated by Rhyno, Styles & Red and they were not happy on Smackdown! Raven raved that all three men are scabs on the WWE and that they are nothing compared to them. Cena said that now they have something to prove so at No Way Out they want a handicap match between Cena & Raven against Styles, Red & Rhyno. Rhyno instantly accepted the challenge and the next week Cena faced Amazing Red in a singles match, to which Cena won with the FU. However after the match there was a brawl between Cena, Raven, Styles, Red and Rhyno. The last week before No Way Out, Cena & Raven attacked Styles and soon ran away when Rhyno came for the save but the match was soon coming.

The strange goings on between Rikishi and whatever the videos are continued. The first one happened during the Rumble and the second one happened during a “punishment” match for Maven as he faced Rikishi. Rikishi was about to finish off Maven with a Banzai Drop, the video started again when the arena went dark. Rikishi was visibly upset and started shouting at the screen and he was then hit with the Backstabber and lost the match to Maven. Rikishi was furious after the match and demanded to know who was playing the videos, whilst this was happening Edge snuck into the ring and hit a huge spear on Rikishi as it seemed that the feud between Edge and Rikishi would continue. The next week Rikishi said that he was convinced that the videos had something to do with Edge and wanted him at No Way Out to end it. Edge agreed to the match and said that this match will finally be the culmination of Rikishi injuring him and that he will defeat Rikishi inside a steel cage! Rikishi smirks before saying that Edge will just end up getting injured during Wrestlemania season and that Rikishi will end the match the victor and the videos will stop! Maven on the other hand was embroiled in a feud for the United States title against Matt Morgan after he asked for a title shot but Heyman decided that Maven needed punishing just for asking. Heyman first put him in a match against Rikishi and then told Maven that he will get his title shot at No Way Out but only because Matt Morgan will destroy Maven and when Maven loses, he doesn’t get another title shot!

Sean O’Haire was embroiled in an interesting feud going into No Way Out as he was furious on Smackdown that Ric Flair was involved in O’Haire being eliminated from the Royal Rumble. The fans started to get behind O’Haire with this promo until he turned around and demanded that they “shut up” because he isn’t doing it for anyone, he is doing it for revenge. He demands that Flair turn up at No Way Out because he will make him pay! On RAW Evolution were in a tag team match when O’Haire’s music played which caused them to lose the match before we fast forward to that week’s Smackdown and O’Haire pleads ignorance as to why his music theme played. O’Haire would then laugh about Evolution losing when Evolution had a video play on the titantron where they promised to be at No Way Out and they will come face to face with Sean O’Haire.

    No Way Out 2004

Chavo Guerrero defeated Ultimo Dragon, Jamie Noble, Akio, Sakoda, Rey Mysterio, Nunzio to win the Cruiserweight title
Basham Brothers defeated Funaki & Scotty 2 Hotty and Chuck Palumbo & Johnny Stamboli
Matt Morgan defeated Maven to retain the United States championship by putting a foot on the ropes
Kidman & London defeated World’s Greatest Tag Team in a ladder match to retain the Tag Team Titles
Raven & John Cena defeated Rhyno, AJ Styles & Amazing Red when Styles and Red turned on Rhyno and joined the Flock

There was a segment where Sean O’Haire pointed out that Evolution were not here because they were scared. However that was when Batista and Orton hit the ring and attacked O’Haire before holding him up for Ric Flair to punch him down before leaving him down and out in the ring.

Edge defeated Rikishi in a steel cage match

A great match which ended with an amazing spot where Edge dove off the top of the cage with a flying spear before covering and getting the win. Edge celebrated when the arena went dark and Rikishi was treated to a message saying that 5 weeks away, the Undertaker will return. This left Rikishi going crazy in the ring.

    Chris Benoit defeated Eddie Guerrero
The Rock defeated Brock Lesnar to win the WWE championship

A great match but that is what you expect between these two. They both fought hard and soon enough all finishers were used but had failed. The referee was also knocked down by an accidental clothesline from Rock but Rock would then turn into another F5 and Lesnar was ready to pin The Rock when the GLASS SHATTERED!! The crowd went absolutely ballistic as Stone Cold suddenly ran into the ring and brawled with Lesnar and then kicking to the gut and hitting the Stunner to huge cheers. Rock would cover but the referee took so long to count that Lesnar would kick out again. Rock was back up now though and hit a huge Rock Bottom on Lesnar before covering and getting the win and winning the WWE title as the crowd were still buzzing by the return of Stone Cold to attack Lesnar!

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

    Well played DE

Austin returning was the least of my thoughts and Lesnar versus Austin in possibly boths last WWE matches could be interesting, unless you chuck Michaels in in the place of Austin. Rock versus Benoit should be great, very unique match

Chavo coming away with the Cruiserweight title was a shock as he hasnt been around the division as much of late

I thought you could have put Benoit's title shot on the line, just to add that extra dimension and possibly steer towards a Eddie Guerrero heel turn when he lost

Really though that the Worlds Greatest Tag Team would come out on top but Kidman and London versus The Bashams is an equally as exciting tag title match, can finally see the Bashams getting the win

Glad you kept Flair versus O'Haire for Wrestlemania and a chance for O'Haire to push up the card with a huge win over the Nature Boy

And I wonder if Rhyno will get any help in his battle against the now four strong Ravens Flock, Styles and Red will be great servants for Raven and Cena, this storyline has me completely hooked to where it is going to go

Keep it up DE, Wrestlemania nearly there

Just give me the damn wooden spoon already!!!

Very good update, but I'm a little concerned about Rock beating Lesnar to win the title a month before Wrestlemania. Granted it makes sense that Ausitn would get even with Lesnar for Survivor Series and that sets up Austin vs. Lesnar at Wrestlemania, and let's face it, in the eal world even though the match said Lesnar vs. Goldberg it was Lesnar against Austin.

But at the same time, you've kind of robbed Benoit the chance to be the one that ends Lesnar's reign of terror. I can see him beating Rock and still getting that big moment at Wrestlemania, but still.

Other than that another excellent update. Can't wait to see how you handle Wrestlemania!

I have never been a fan of putting the winner of the Rumble's title shot on the line. I find that although it brings intrigue for that one match, it also takes away from the prestige of winning the Rumble. After all why try and win the Rumble when you could just challenge the Rumble winner and take his title shot? That's why it wasn't a title shot match.

Well I would totally understand that except for the fact that Lesnar has only just won the title back from Undertaker. If he had kept the title for longer then I think I would have put the plans for Austin & Lesnar back for the Benoit moment but because this title reign of Lesnar was so short, I decided that Austin/Lesnar was bigger than Benoit/Lesnar for now. Lesnar/Benoit will happen but not yet...

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

You had a big match on your hands with Benoit vs Lesnar at 'Mania and managed to turn into two monumental matches with Benoit vs Rock and Austin vs Lesnar. Good booking. For some odd reason it's like I've never even seen Benoit and Rock in the same ring. My memory could be hazy, or I might not have been paying attention, but it seems like these two never even faced off, at least not a big scale. Well needless to say I'm excited to see that styles clash come time for WrestleMania. The SCSA/Lesnar thing is interesting, but not a farcry from what happened in real life. Nothing wrong with that, but knowing what happened in real life kind of puts a damper on the match, even in fantasy land!

Still, I encourage you to keep on keeping on. I like what I see here and will be reading, no doubt!

    Re: 2004 Rebrand

    Where it all Begins…Again!
    Wrestlemania XX

The Rock won the WWE championship at No Way Out in controversial fashion but that didn’t stop The Rock from celebrating it. Rock threw a huge celebration on Smackdown and even declared himself the “biggest WWE champion of all time” before promising that the title belt would not be leaving him anytime soon. His celebration was interrupted however by Chris Benoit to a huge cheer. Benoit reminded Rock how he won the Royal Rumble and that now The Rock has a date with Chris Benoit in the main event at Wrestlemania. Rock smirked before saying that Benoit is nowhere near Rock’s league and that winning at Wrestlemania will be easier because Benoit has only really competed for the United States title lately. This confrontation didn’t come to blows as much as the fans wanted it but the confrontations continued as Rock reminded everyone that Benoit was too busy being beaten by Maven not too long ago and should not be anywhere near the main event at Wrestlemania, Rock even went as far as to say that he has already watched Benoit fail to two rookies in the past year and even be outsmarted by his “best friend”. Rock promises to defeat Benoit but Benoit’s response was that he may have been beaten by those people but he has also fought the biggest odds of his career lately thanks to Paul Heyman. Benoit asks the question of if he can take on Big Show, Brock Lesnar, Matt Morgan and A-Train at the same time, why would Rock be such a huge challenge? Rock smirks before telling Benoit that The Rock is larger than life and that Benoit is messing with the biggest star in wrestling history. Benoit’s rebuttle? He is the greatest wrestler in WWE history and he will pull Rock apart in the ring.

The verbals stopped and it was time for in ring action as Benoit was forced to face Big Show once again with loads of Rock shenanigans. Rock tried his best to help Show to the victory but Benoit would keep coming back and eventually locked in the crippler crossface into Show before making him tap out. Rock’s face was a picture and Benoit signalled for Rock to be getting the crossface. That was what the match seemed to hook on for the next couple of weeks as Benoit promised to lock it in and make Rock tap but that was when Heyman said that seeing as they were two weeks away from Wrestlemania, both men would be picking their opponents. Rock obviously picked the man that had been a thorn in Benoit’s side, Matt Morgan. Benoit took the match in his stride and fought hard in the match against the rookie and of course Benoit made him look like a million bucks before dodging the Carbon Footprint before locking in the crossface and making Morgan tap to the dismay of The Rock. Benoit smiled from ear to ear before telling Rock that his opponent was his “good friend” Maven! Rock looked annoyed at the choice but Maven was in another main event match! The action was hard fought but Rock was shocked when he went for the Rock Bottom but Maven slipped out and performed the backstabber before rushing for the cover. That was when the match broke down as the United States champion Matt Morgan dove into the match and attacked Maven. Maven was then in trouble as Rock and Morgan both started to beat down the challenger for the US title but that’s when Benoit came running down and evened the odds before chasing off Rock and Morgan.

The last week before Wrestlemania and it was time for one more confrontation where Benoit’s and Rock’s history were discussed in which they covered everything from when they last fought for the big title in 2000 when Rock defeated Benoit to retain the WWE championship then. Benoit however reminded everyone that he did defeat Rock by making him tap out until the match was restarted. Rock smirked before saying that this is what happens when somebody doesn’t deserve the title. Benoit then reminded Rock that they had been facing off against each other during last year and that Benoit ended up walking out as United States champion. Rock told Benoit that the United States title is nowhere near as prestigious as the WWE championship and that Benoit better be ready because at Wrestlemania The Rock will retain the WWE championship and it will be just another time in which Benoit was given the chance and couldn’t quite win it. Benoit promised to strip Rock of the title and become the WWE champion for the first time and finally beat his rut. That Smackdown ended with Rock and Benoit staring each other down with the commentators hyping whether at Wrestlemania The Rock will remain the WWE champion or whether Chris Benoit can finally win the big one.

Whilst the WWE title was taking centre stage, there was another feud that had many of the WWE fans excited. Brock Lesnar versus Stone Cold! The first Smackdown after No Way Out saw a furious Brock Lesnar come down and despite being offered his rematch against The Rock but Lesnar refused and said that the only thing he wants now is Stone Cold Steve Austin! Lesnar says that the only reason that Rock is the champion is because of his old friend Stone Cold and Lesnar even went as far as to say it was probably a plot by the “old guard” of the WWE because they knew that Lesnar is the present and future of this company and without him the company is nothing! Lesnar makes the challenge and tells Stone Cold that at Wrestlemania he will make Austin wish he had stayed away from the WWE when Lesnar booted him out the first time. The next week Lesnar seemed to have calmed down somewhat but promised to be at RAW and would be confronting Austin for the first time since Survivor Series. However we are shown a video of Stone Cold belittling Brock Lesnar and telling him that he is nothing more than a “meely mouthed bastard” that cost him his job and that Austin will destroy Lesnar to get revenge.

RAW kicked off with Stone Cold in the ring and demanding that Brock Lesnar come and face him rather than try and sneak up on him but Lesnar soon snuck into the ring and lifted Austin up for the F5 before stealing Austin’s ATV and disappearing from RAW, leaving a furious Rattlesnake! The next Smackdown Lesnar came driving out with the ATV and laughing about how he showed Austin exactly what was going to happen at Wrestlemania and now he is going to destroy “Sherriff” Austin’s ATV and pulls out a sledgehammer. Lesnar was just about to smash the ATV when the glass shattered to a huge cheer and Austin came running down to the ring. The two men started to brawl before Lesnar seemingly took control and shoved Austin into the corner before ramming his shoulder into him and Lesnar called for an F5. That was when Austin fought back and slid down before hitting the Stunner to which Lesnar rolls out of the ring and backs up the ramp. Austin then led his own beer bash before driving his ATV away and the match was next between Austin and Lesnar for Wrestlemania.

Another big match that was being made for Wrestlemania was the tag team title match. The Basham Brothers earned the right to face Billy Kidman & Paul London for the tag team titles and on the first Smackdown there was to be a contract signing for the match. Kidman & London managed to sign but before the Basham Brothers could sign, the World’s Greatest Tag Team crashed the party and came down saying they should be in the match and wanted the Basham Brother’s spot. The Basham’s of course refused having worked hard to get this title shot and that was when Haas & Benjamin attacked the Basham’s before signing the contract themselves?! They left with the confusion of what could possibly happen now. The next week we were given the answers as Paul Heyman says that World’s Greatest Tag Team had signed the contract so they were now in the match but the Basham Brothers had earned their shot and now the match at Wrestlemania will be triple threat tag team match and because Heyman wants this near year long feud to be sorted out, the match at Wrestlemania will now be a tables, ladders and chairs match for the tag team titles!

For all the teams to get tasters they were put in different matches in which Kidman & London defeated the Basham Brothers in a chairs match thanks to World’s Greatest Tag Team coming down and going to town with chairs on the Bashams before doing the same to Kidman & London. WGTT then stood with the tag team titles and promising to walk out of Wrestlemania with the titles. The next week World’s Greatest Tag Team defeated Billy Kidman & Paul London when the Basham Brothers came down with ladders and attacked all 4 men before grabbing the titles themselves and promising the titles at Wrestlemania. However it was the last week before Wrestlemania and Kidman & London fought back before taking back their tag team titles and promising to make both teams pay for their attacks over the past couple of weeks.

Another big feud was the seeming return of the Undertaker. Rikishi refused to believe that the Undertaker had anything to do with the recent videos that had been haunting him. Rikishi even destroyed poor Funaki that week before demanding to know who is behind the videos because he knows it’s not the Undertaker because he buried him alive! Rikishi promised to destroy everyone in the WWE until he finds out exactly who is doing this. The next week Rikishi comes down and demands to know who is behind everything when a special video plays saying that his “demons will come to pass, soon” and Rikishi is going crazy in the ring. That’s when Rikishi’s old friend Scotty 2 Hotty comes walking down to the ring, petrified. Scotty 2 Hotty tries his best to talk Rikishi around and looks like he is getting somewhere when Rikishi blindsides Scotty before destroying him and hitting the Banzai Drop. Rikishi then yelled into the microphone that whoever it is that is messing with him is going to feel the devastation he creates in his ring and will not be able to mess with anybody ever again. Rikishi then faced Hardcore Holly in a match and beat him easily before looking like he was going to destroy him when the ring started to rumble and a video played saying that “all will be revealed at Wrestlemania” and Rikishi was left furious before yelling that he buried the Undertaker alive and that he was going to destroy whoever this was. The last week before Wrestlemania and Rikishi stomped down to the ring before saying that this was the last week before he destroys whoever it is in the middle of the ring, they could show themselves and maybe he won’t completely destroy them but instead Rikishi just got a video saying that “at Wrestlemania, redemption is at hand” and Rikishi still refused to believe it was the Undertaker returning, so is it the Undertaker or someone else? Wrestlemania holds the answer…

Sean O’Haire was also part of an interbrand feud as he was steam rolling into a match against Ric Flair at Wrestlemania after being at the first Smackdown after No Way Out all bandaged up. Most of this feud was based over at RAW however as O’Haire turned up to RAW as their “guest” and he went down to the ring to a loud chorus of boos. Evolution soon came out and circled the ring before seemingly about to attack O’Haire. That was when Booker T, RVD and HBK came running down to help him out. O’Haire was soon left in the ring with Ric Flair and O’Haire stalked the legend before about to strike when security guards separated both men and broke up the fight, leaving the crowd booing as they wanted to see the two fight. The fight spilled to Smackdown when O’Haire challenged Flair to come to Smackdown to face him and the week before Wrestlemania, Evolution obliged. Evolution soon came down to the rind and O’Haire stood his ground and was completely out numbered when Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio and Edge came running down to the ring to even things up when Kane came running down and completely cleared the ring except for O’Haire and Flair who was just about to brawl but once again they were separated and we were left wanting their match at Wrestlemania!!

We then had the cruiserweight title feud to contend with as Chavo Guerrero had somehow ended the great title run that Ultimo Dragon had been on. Chavo of course bragged and declared himself the most successful Guerrero in their family and is going to prove to be the best Cruiserweight champion in WWE history. Chavo continued to brag when a huge cheer erupted for Jamie Noble. Noble came down demanding a shot at the title because he hadn’t had a one on one contest that hadn’t been ruined and he wants his chance. Chavo was about to say no when Jamie slipped in that Eddie knew he wouldn’t to which Chavo went crazy about and agreed to the match. On the same Smackdown, Ultimo Dragon wanted a chance to face Akio after Akio cost Ultimo Dragon his cruiserweight title but Akio refused causing a tag match between Akio and Sakoda against Ultimo Dragon and Steve Corino. The next week and Corino & Dragon defeated Akio & Sakoda whilst Chavo defeated Nunzio before demanding that Noble come down to the ring. Chavo then told Noble that next week he will face Nunzio also but he has to do better than Chavo and Noble agreed but only if Chavo faced who he wanted if Noble beat his time. Chavo laughed before agreeing and questioning who Noble could find to face the Cruiserweight champion, Noble told Chavo he will have to wait and see. Of course the next week Noble defeated Nunzio in a quicker time than Chavo and Chavo demands to know who he must face and Noble told him it was Eddie Guerrero! Eddie defeated Chavo in a decent match but the last week before Wrestlemania, these two feuds molded together as Chavo, Akio & Sakoda defeated Jamie Noble, Ultimo Dragon and Rey Mysterio before Noble promised to take the Cruiserweight title after all these months of fighting for it.

A match that had everybody excited was created on RAW by HHH but the match itself involved both RAW and Smackdown and that match was the debut of the Money in the Bank match. The concept was that it would be a ladder match with a briefcase hanging above the ring and superstars from Smackdown and RAW would be compete. The winner of the briefcase? Gets a guaranteed shot at their brands title anytime in the next year. HHH thought of the idea and told Bischoff that both Orton and Batista need to be in the match, which of course Bischoff accepted. This caught Edge’s attention and he said that he wanted in on the match. Heyman however said that unlike RAW, you earn your way into matches like that and Heyman said he wanted Matt Morgan in the match anyway. Heyman then made a match in which Edge would face Big Show and Matt Morgan would be facing Eddie Guerrero with the winners being entered into the Money in the Bank match. Mysterio then announced he wanted in too and Heyman makes Mysterio against A-Train for the next week. Matt Morgan was at this moment trying to keep Maven at bay as he wanted a shot at the United States championship and that was the reason as to why Eddie Guerrero defeated Matt Morgan to enter the Money in the Bank match, thanks to maven attacking Matt Morgan during the match. Edge and Mysterio both also managed to defeat Big Show & A-Train and it seemed we had our Smackdown entrants into the big debuting match at Wrestlemania. We were also shown that Kane had been added to the big match. The next week Maven and Matt Morgan confronting each other with Morgan trying his best to get out of the now made match at Wrestlemania for the United States championship. However it was the Money in the Bank match that started to take center fold as Edge promised that this was the opportunity of a lifetime and Edge was determined to take it. However Rey Mysterio came down and said that he has been fighting since day one because of his size and was planning to prove everybody wrong. That is when Eddie Guerrero comes down and says that on the Smackdown side of things, Eddie is the only person to have a singles championship in the match and that he promises to win this briefcase and finally get a title shot at the WWE championship. All three men staredown whilst they promise to win the briefcase. There was a final confrontation between Matt Morgan and Maven as both men promised to win the US title at Wrestlemania and Maven said that he managed to beat The Rock so Matt Morgan best bring his “A” game. However on the Money in the Bank side of things there was a mass brawl as Evolution and Kane visited Smackdown thanks to Evolution’s feud with Sean O’Haire. All 6 men brawled to the question of exactly which one of them would win the coveted Money in the Bank briefcase?

The final feud that was intriguing everyone on Smackdown was Raven’s Flock. Raven stood in the ring on the first Smackdown after No Way Out and called John Cena, AJ Styles & Amazing Red his “flock” but Raven said it wasn’t complete yet, he wants Rhyno to join him. Raven extended the invitation but Rhyno refused before saying he wanted to face Raven at Wrestlemania, one on one. Raven accepted the challenge before telling Rhyno that if he lost he is forced to join the Flock. Rhyno agrees but if Rhyno wins then the Flock must split up. What then led up to Wrestlemania was Rhyno facing each member of the Flock in singles matches as John Cena defeated Rhyno in the first week but Rhyno defeated Amazing Red the next week. Raven was determined that AJ Styles would beat Rhyno and it happened as Styles defeated thanks to the Flock attacking Rhyno before leaving him in a puddle of blood as Raven promised to defeat Rhyno at Wrestlemania and that Rhyno will then be forced to be part of the Flock.
