    General Olympic Football Talk

Gathered from a few newspapers this is apparently the squad that will go to the Olympics

    Goalkeepers

Jack Butland - Birmingham City - England

Jason Steele - Middlesborough - England

    Defenders

Micah Richards - Manchester City - England - OVERAGE

Nathaniel Clyne - Crystal Palace - England

Steve Caulker - Tottenham - England

Jason Lowe - Blackburn Rovers - England

Kieran Gibbs - Arsenal - England

Ryan Bertrand - Chelsea - England

    Midfielders

Ryan Giggs - Manchester United - Wales - OVERAGE

Tom Cleverley - Manchester United - England

Aaron Ramsay - Arsenal - Wales

Joe Allen - Swansea - Wales

Josh McEachran - Chelsea - England

    Forwards

Craig Bellamy - Unattached (I believe) - Wales - OVERAGE

Marvin Sordell - Bolton - England

Scott Sinclair - Swansea - England

Wilfried Zaha - Crystal Palace - England

Daniel Sturridge - Chelsea - England

    - - -

Not a bad squad in fairness, yes Beckham missing out does seem harsh but people scapegoating Richards should realise Beckham would have to take Giggs or Beckhams place because , as Pearce put it, injuries to Walker and Smalling forced his hand

Bit surprised about Sordell and Lowe being in there

Think Chris Gunter, Adam Matthews (both Wales) or Grant Hanley or Danny Wilson (both Scotland) are better alternatives

Sordell is a very peculiar pick, did he only get in because of Bales injury. would have loved Arsenal to give Chamberlain permission to play, would do wonders for all three parties. If not think Barry Bannan or Matt Phillips would have been great picks instead

Lansbury of Arsenal seems to be a big omission to me, considering he is an integral part of the under 21 set up

Fully expect this to be the line up

    Butland

    Lowe - Richards - Caulker - Gibbs/Bertrand

    Allen - Ramsay - Cleverley

    Sinclair - Sturridge - Giggs

Its a good team, but will come up short against the likes of Brazil, Spain and even Uruguay in my opinion

I noticed that too when I started seeing the likely team sheets floating around.

No wonder the other countries werent too thrilled with the idea.

That team will get massacred by Brazil's U-23 team.

A couple of decent players there, nothing to get too excited about and a pretty sad indication of British football.

No Bale really hurts that team.

    re: General Olympic Football Talk

I would have taken Jonny Evans as one of my over age players instead of Richards and Chris Brunt instead of Bellamy

James Forrest was supposedly in the squad until Celtic ruled he couldnt play

Squad has obviously been weakened massively by Walker, Smalling and Bale being out, Sturridge set to play centrally

Scottish influence there is, however slight, Josh McEachran mother and father are Scottish

I assumed Evans was injured or something. Why wasn't he called up as one of the over 23 players?

From what I've seen Jordan Rhodes is better than Zaha, and I've never seen this Sordell so I don't know what to expect for him. Matt Phillips could have made the squad too. Plus you could of picked someone other than Bellamy to be the over aged player, there's plenty of Welsh talent in the squad anyway.

I'm glad Brunt didn't get called up, he had enough injuries last year, don't want him picking up anything in the summer that he could avoid.

    re: General Olympic Football Talk

I dont think he is injured, maybe Fergie has said you can have Giggs or Evans and he chose the sentiment

Giggs deserves a chance at a tournament, but to me its still 3 or 4 years too late, all this Beckham malarkey and you would think Beckham has never played at the big tournaments

And here is a list of the prem players at the olympics so far

Ryan Nelsen (QPR) - overage player and captain for New Zealand

Maynor Figueroa (Wigan) - overage player for Honduras

Chris Wood (WBA) - New Zealand

Park Chu Young (Arsenal) - overage player and captain for South Korea

Ji Dong Won (Sunderland) - South Korea

Giovanni Dos Santos (Spurs) - Mexico

Senegal, UAE, Uruguay, Gabon, Switzerland, Belarus, Brazil, Egypt, Japan, Morocco and Spain have yet to announce their squads

With the likes of Kagawa, Miyaichi, Mata, De Gea, Chamakh, Luiz, Ba, Suarez, Cisse all linked with places

Chris Wood has played more games for New Zealand than he has for West Brom

Really hope Clarke gives him a chance next season.

    re: General Olympic Football Talk

He looked rather decent at Birmingham was it last year, even got some Europa League experience and a goal

But when you think about the olympics and the fact Brazil are going to field Neymar- Pato - Hulk in a forward line then the others must be worried

Pretty pissed off that not one Scot made it in the squad. Should have expected it with Pearce making the selection.

Going to have a lot political shit flinging up here off the back of this.

The thing with Beckham is he likely would have captained the side and as such become the first person to be captain in the Euro's, World Cup and Olympics. He'd be an improvement on some of the players picked.

    re: General Olympic Football Talk

I think Forrest was the only real contender and only inury put him out of it

Bannan was considered but I think Hanley or Wilson could have been decent enough picks

IF I was picking with everyone fit the three over age players would have been Jonny Evans, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs, two because they are very good in their positions and one because he has the experience, the skill and deserves his opportunity for his service to the sport

    re: General Olympic Football Talk

Fairly sure Ferguson said Giggs was the only over-age player United would allow for selection. Meaning he's basically asked players to rule themselves out of those spots, or Evans probably would have made it!

I'd still far rather Beckham was in than Bellamy.

According to what I'm hearing, West Brom centre back Craig Dawson has made it into the Team GB squad.

    re: General Olympic Football Talk

Yep 5 changes from the likely squad named in the opening post

No Nathaniel Clyne, Jason Lowe, Kieran Gibbs, Josh McEachran or Wilfried Zaha

In come Craig Dawson, Danny Rose, Neil Taylor, James Tomkins and Jack Cork

    Fairly balanced and surprising squad

    Think he might go with

    Butland

    Richards - Caulker - Tomkins - Bertrand

    Ramsay - Allen - Cleverley

    Sinclair - Sturridge - Giggs

Bellamy shouldnt be in the squad, and im Welsh, much better British wingers than him such as Adam Johnson, Aaron Lennon or Chris Brunt who could have taken that place

Great that Gibbs is out. He's injury prone enough as it is, no need to be adding games for him. Shame Ramsey is still going but hopefully it will find him a bit of form.

Here's hoping he doesn't find any goal-scoring form, for the sake of celebrities everywhere!
