2012 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

Not sure why this hasn't been posted sooner tbh, this was always a good thread to keep track of the great matches throughout the year, hype up some matches from the indys that some people won't have seen yet etc, etc. With Wrestlemania just gone, marking the first quarter of the wrestling year over, now seems like a decent time to start this.

Surprise surprise I'm going for Undertaker v Triple H as my front runner for MOTY from the WWE, I thought it was fantastic and they really will have to pull out something special for it not to stay at my #1 come the voting in December. Jericho/Punk is in at #2, which was great, but it didn't have the same emotion as HIAC, plus I think we're getting a rematch at Extreme Rules anyway. The Elimination Chambers this year weren't great, so I don't seem much point pimping them out here. In terms of free TV matches, we got CM Punk v Daniel Bryan a couple of times, and last night's match between Henry and Punk was great.

I've only seen Aries and Roode's matches from TNA pay-per-views this year, and I'm still a little sketchy on what I remember from them, so I'm probably not best placed to make a judgement.

I've seen very little ROH this year, I have Elgin/Davey downloaded, so I'll watch that some point this week seeing as though it's got rave reviews over the weekend from some people.

Anyway, over to you guys, discuss....

Re: 2012 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

In all honesty I don't know what will come close to HIAC. It wasn't just a great match but it had a huge backstory and the combined experience and respect in the ring was phenomenal. Which was cemented by the legends hug.

Jericho and Punk is my second for MOTY as it was perfect start to finish. But the reasons above are why it's second.

3rd will probably be Rock and Cena. Not the best technical match ever but both men put on a fantastic match, was spoilt be Cena's stupid attempt at the Elbow.

4th is probably The Rumble match. Some great moments and an epic finale.

5th will likely be Smackdowns HIAC. Just because of how one man drew everyone into the match. Never has a guy gone from a nobody to a massive fan favourite in such a short time.

These of course are for the year so far. I hope we see much more of the same, but like I say. That top spot will be hard to beat.

to be honest I can't see any match beating out the WM HIAC this year, in terms of match quality as well as backstory and match storytelling. It was that damn good.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the best match of the year will involve Lesnar.

But so far, for me it's Jericho vs Punk.
    Everything will surely be alright.

How did that spoil it? If anything spoiled it was Rock being blown up like 12 minutes in.

Re: 2012 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

I don't think either of those things spoiled the match. Cena's elbow was a part of a neat finish and they covered Rock's rustiness pretty well. Saying something is spoiled is like Rey vs Eddie from Wrestlemania 21 which was a match that had no chance of being anything special due to Rey's mask.

    After Extreme Rules.....

    1) The Undertaker vs Triple H - Wrestlemania
    2) Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus - Extreme Rules
    3) CM Punk vs Chris Jericho - Wrestlemania
    4) Brock Lesnar vs John Cena - Extreme Rules
    5) CM Punk vs Mark Henry - Raw (the night after Wrestlemania)

Still got Elgin/Davey and Roode/Storm from last month to watch at some point

Eh, Storm/Roode wasn't anything special. Star rating wise, it's only about 2 3/4 stars.

Re: 2012 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

I'd probably put Bryan/Sheamus ahead of Undertaker/HHH. Both are great, but less things irritated me about Bryan/Sheamus and I thought the storytelling was just as good. Plus the pacing was a little more to my liking.

Re: 2012 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

I haven't seen much this year, but my list is only slightly different from Ed's...

    1. The Undertaker Vs. Triple H- WrestleMania
    2. Brock Lesnar Vs. John Cena- Extreme Rules
    3. Daniel Bryan Vs. Sheamus- Extreme Rules
    4. Chris Jericho Vs. CM Punk- WrestleMania XXVIII
    5. Austin Aries Vs. Alex Shelley- Against All Odds

I've seen most Raws this year and every PPV, but not much on the Smackdown side and very, very limited TNA. In fact, only saw AAO. Really enjoyed that match though.

Re: 2012 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

    After last night:

    1) The Undertaker vs Triple H - Wrestlemania 28
    2) CM Punk vs Daniel Bryan - Over The Limit
    3) Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus - Extreme Rules
    4) Brock Lesnar vs John Cena - Extreme Rules
    5) CM Punk vs Chris Jericho - Wrestlemania 28

Austin Aries v Bully Ray is the best I've seen from TNA this year, but I'm not sure I'd put it above that top five, I'm sure something will sneak out Jericho/Punk sooner or later.

Still haven't got around to watching Davey/Elgin............

To much WWE in here. People need to watch Elgin vs. Richards and Okada vs. Naito.

I'll watch Richards vs Elgin eventually, but the idea that anybody who's seen it would vote it over those WWE matches is short-sighted.

The fact that you have that view is short sighted. Geezus........what a shitty statement.

To assume that anybody would have the same opinion as yours on that match is short-sighted yes, especially when you know full well that a lot of people here can't stand Davey's style.

The fact that I'm so reluctant to watch it tells it's own story.

Re: 2012 Ongoing Match of the Year Thread

I'll wait till I've actually seen Elgin/Davey before I dismiss it as weaker than the top WWE matches this year, but it's got a tall ask no doubt, been really impressed with the BIG matches from them this year.
