Lol. So what......a different guy, from a different background, that gets everything and loses it all in the end, with a different way he sees the message "The World Is Yours."?

    Re: Scarface (TBA)

Do they really need to remake Scarface? Really?

Not interested in this at all. I saw the original for the first time earlier this year and it was an epic film that I found to be incredibly entertaining and a great cautionary tale of the darker side of the American dream. Why this needs to be re-made into something far less interesting as it's inspiration is beyond me.

Really surprised this is being remade.

Interesting to see who gets cast all the same.

    And he scores goals...!

Harry Potter Director David Yates Circling Scarface

The long-gestating Scarface update appears to finally have a director. According to Deadline, Harry Potter's David Yates is in "final talks" with Universal to direct the movie, which would make him the first person formally attached to the film. The 1983 Al Pacino–led Scarface is itself a remake of a 1932 movie, but this new Scarface will apparently be more of a reboot — new characters, new setting, new saying hello to little friends, but with the same themes of drug kingpindom, trafficking, and the American Dream.
The first one was pretty incredible. Seeing a reboot is just about the cash, and I can't see how they can recreate the magic of the first one. David yates directing might be one way to at least ensure it as a chance.

Tough movie to try and remake, or even get that same energy from past movies, will be tough to do.

Bit too much of an iconic movie to remake successfully in my opinion. But that's Hollywood, if it's not a reboot, remake, sequel, prequel, spin-off or tie-in then it's not worth releasing.

Actually I'm kind of looking forward to this remake (if it ever gets made). The 1983 version is one of the most overrated piles of crap ever, so there's pretty much nowhere to go but up for this one.

    How dare you.

And even if you believe that, you can't deny that Pacino's Tony Montana is one of the most iconic characters in the history of cinema, and that alone makes remaking the film rather tough.

I guess with Scarface you have the fact that it will be a completely different setting and time period which will make it feel less like a direct remake and more like a completely different film, despite the plot similarities. The 80s setting is what made the 1983 one what it was.

I love that film though. Yes it's over the top, but it's supposed to be.

    Re: Scarface (TBA)

This isn't the first time he's said it, and I'm in agreement. Scarface blows except for the last 10 mins, although I appreciate Al Pacino's acting in it. Don't think I've ever felt a film drag as much as Scarface did, was really disappointed when I watched it given the hype it gets.

Want a brilliant gangsta film, goodfellas!

    Re: Scarface (TBA)

Yeah, cos Goodfella's doesn't get a ton of hype.

I know though. I've seen Fuji opine about Scarface before and he's never been overly complimentary of it. Personally I found the whole film incredibly enjoyable, but I can certainly understand people not enjoying it. Almost Famous, The Princess Bride, Willow... Now those are films that I'm mystified to find people who don't enjoy them.

    Re: Scarface (TBA)

So it looks like this one might actually get made. Good luck, I guess to Mr. Yates, if that is indeed who's directing.

I'll take a James Cagney gangster film any day of the week. White Heat and The Public Enemy are must see movies.

For sure, as much as I dislike the movie I'd never take anything away from Pacino's performance. To me, it stands out even more than some of his other work because of how poor the movie itself is.

I do, but as Booty says, this is not one of those times.

I actually kinda agree with Fuji. Scarface is a good movie, but its way over rated. I feel the same way about Goodfellas and Casino. Though both those movies are better than Scarface.

The best gang/Mafia movie is Blood in Blood Out
    Here fishy fishy fishy.......

Straight Outta Compton’s Jonathan Herman to Pen Scarface Remake

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has set Straight Outta Compton writer Jonathan Herman to perform a script rewrite on its upcoming reboot of Scarface, to be helmed by Chilean director Pablo Larrain (No). Herman will fine-tune the screenplay that was already written by Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco) and David Ayer (Suicide Squad).

Originally directed for the screen by Howard Hawks in 1932, the story of a gangster’s rise to power was based on the 1929 Armitage Trail novel of the same name. In 1983, Brian De Palma offered a modernized update of the story with Al Pacino in the lead, which is the version best known today.

Now, producers Martin Bregman and Marc Shmuger (the former of which produced De Palma’s version) are moving forward with a third big screen take on Scarface, which will follow a Mexican lead in present-day Los Angeles. The character will keep the first name of Tony from the De Palma version, but will have a different last name.
Man they have a huge task ahead of them, I hope it's a new twist and not an exact copy of the 1983 version. I have never seen the originial, man maybe I should.

I just hope they can find a way to incorporate another "Push It To The Limit" montage. One of my favorite parts of the movie.
