    Universal Mixed Martial Arts League

    ESTABLISHING UMMAL

UMMAL was founded in September 2010 by “Big” John McCarthy, long time referee for the UFC as well as owner of a prominent Los Angeles gym. McCarthy came up with the idea one day at him gym when one of his students told him that McCarthy had enough talent there to start a fighting company of his own. He of course didn’t use the trainees at his gym but he did look into running his own fighting organization. He talked it over Dana White and Dana said he’d support him 100%. After all McCarthy had done for Dana and how he stood by the company in it’s early days of struggle how could Dana not help him start this company. McCarthy got a lump of money from Dana as well as money from the bank and thousands to millions from investors, which would easily be enough to open up his fighting federation, The Universal Mixed Martial Arts League!

    UMMAL HEADLINES

John J. Austin of mmashift.com sits down with Kimbo Slice for Q&A before the first ever Terminal Velocity where he will collide with Antoni Hardonk.

Q: How does your ground game match-up against that of Hardonk’s?
A: Does it really matter? Fact of the matter is that I am too powerful and too dangerous for Hardonk to even consider trying to take me down in fear of getting a big right hand in the mouth!

Q: Do you think Hardonk and you will make for a fight worthy of being main event of the first ever Terminal Velocity?
A: No doubt about it! Anytime you’ve got me in a fight you can bet big things will happen!

Q: Does it bother you that critics have rated you as a mediocre MMA fighter with no proper education in the sport?
A: Haters gonna hate. I guess they don’t know that I’ve been training hard with American Top Team to improve and I am in fact a bona fide MMA fighter.

Q: Have you spoke about your future in UMMAL with Big John McCarthy yet?
A: Me and John spoke a little about me bringing my A Game in every fight and being a model fighter in this company. He says he’s got confidence that I can become the face of this company in no time, and I agree.

Q: How stacked is the Massweight division in your opinion?
A: There’s a lot of good fighters. From Arlovski to Emelianeko, you got every kind of fighter the world has to offer, but there’s no way any of them want it as bad as me, so really, there is no threat!

John J. Austin of mmashift.com gets John McCarthy’s views on the Minorweight division

John McCarthy: “To me the Minorweight division might just be the deepest pool of talent in the UMMAL right now. Me and my staff had really rallied together a crowded class of fighters from Urijah Faber to Ben Henderson to Dan Hardy to Anthony “Rumble” Johnson and everyone in between, every competitor in this division is hungry for competition and that’s why I think some of the best fights to come out of UMMAL in the future are going to feature these super tough athletes! When the UMMAL advances on into it’s fifth and tenth years and so forth, we’ll look back on the greatest fights before then and you’ll see guys like Faber and Henderson putting on a show! That’s not to say that the Midweight and Massweight divisions aren’t incredible, but on paper, The Minorweight Division looks the most solid to me!”

Roger McNeil of fightersunited.com asks Jamie Dukes about his new job in MMA

Jamie Dukes: “When John and his people first got in touch with me about being a part of their MMA organization I told them, ‘I think you got the wrong Jamie Dukes, I’m the NFL Total Access guy!’. But then they told me that they knew who I was and thought I would make a great post-fight interviewer. I figured I had the time and I had watched a bit of UFC and PRIDE in my day, so I told them I’d love the job! And now here I am and I am psyched about Terminal Velocity! I’m fully confident Slice, Hardonk, Faber, Danzig, and the rest of the fellas will put on one fantastic show!”
