Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    Wrestling Challenge – 12/07/1986
@ Chicago, IL - Rosemont Horizon

Before the show begins we see highlights of The Foreign Legion retaining their right to face off against The British Bulldogs at The King Of The Ring, which takes place in two weeks time.

We then head to the ring as Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse “The Body” Ventura discuss the jeopardy that The British Bulldogs face themselves in what with The Foreign Legion looking like genuine title contenders. Whilst they are discussing the tag team title situation we head to the ring as your resident jobbers Les Thornton and “Iron” Mike Sharpe are in the ring awaiting their opponents.

The US Express (Mike Rotundo and Dan Spivey) pinned Les Thornton and "Iron" Mike Sharpe. Sharpe tastes the pinfall after a bulldog from Spivey. (4.32) This time last year the first incarnation of The US Express (Barry Windham proceeding Dan Spivey) were the most over team within the federation. This time this year, to say they have lost some of their momentum would be an understatement. They are merely treading water in the tag division as the likes of The Bulldogs, The Fabulous Rougeaus and The Killer Bees all have superseded them in terms of popularity. This however is still a needed victory for the team and puts the team back on the map.

Interview in the back conducted by Lord Alfred Hayes. His guests at this time are the combination of The Junkyard Dog and George “The Animal” Steele. Nonsensical promo with Steele playing the uncontrollable mad man and JYD praising his chances in the KOTR tournament.

Jim Powers pinned Terry Gibbs after a reverse roll up (4.11) The commentators spend the majority of the match speaking of Powers recent improvement in the ring and that fact that himself and Paul Roma gave The Hart Foundation a good run for their money in a match recently. The girls certainly appreciate Powers “talents” as he gets himself a singles victory over fellow preliminary talent. After the match Paul Roma comes out and him and Powers celebrate in the ring as we go to commercial.

When we get back, Monsoon introduces us to the first part of a series of interviews with Hulk Hogan, the World Heavyweight Champion. Over the coming episode and on Prime Time, Hogan will give his personal thoughts on each 8 competitors that will be taking part in the King Of The Ring tournament. His first focus is “Triple Crown” Pedro Morales. Hogan, says he has nothing but respect for the only man to win the World, Intercontinental and Tag titles. It would be an amazing achievement if he was to win the King crown as well. Hogan will certainly be hoping that Morales gets to the final and wins it.

The Junkyard Dog and George “The Animal” Steele pinned Gino Carabello and Steve Lombardi after JYD pinned Lombardi with a powerslam (3.33) Hogan popped up in the bottom right hand of the corner, during the match and spoke favourably about JYD. He spoke about his experience and the fact that he will have the fans on his side during the tournament. Steele and JYD make short work of their opponents and could prove to be quite the challenge to other teams in the bulging tag division.

We get a preview for Prime Time’s line up on Tuesday. In a KOTR qualifying rematch, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat will face Jake “The Snake” Roberts, we will also see the return of The Dream Team, who have been away from the spotlight for the last month, they will meet The Killer Bees.

“Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff (with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan) pinned Blackjack Mulligan with a piledriver at (10.41) Orndorff struggled to get Mulligan hoisted up for his finisher, but managed it after a fourth attempt. Orndorff gets himself another big victory heading into next weeks tournament. Hogan again was on hand to comment on another potential number one contender to his World Title. Hogan says that Orndorff has been one of the toughest opponents he has faced since he has been champion. He does state though that he has beaten him on multiple occasions and sees no reason why he wouldn’t beat him again.

Main event time and we see a new pairing in action as Haku teams up with The Tonga Kid .
Don “King” Muraco and Bob “The Ace” Orton pinned Haku and The Tonga Kid after Muraco pinned Kid after an overhead piledriver. A clean victory for the heels and a first defeat for Haku and Tonga on their first outing. Mr Fuji was not in the corner of Muraco in tonight's match. The commentators put over Muraco’s chances on regaining the title of King. Hogan again pops up to give his thoughts on Muraco’s chances in the tournament. Hogan, talks Muraco up as another huge challenger to his title in the past. Hogan though does believe that with his Hulkamanics behind him, he would be able to beat Muraco again. (12.02)

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    Prime Time Wrestling – 15/07/86
    @ Poughkeepsie, NY - Mid-Hudson Civic Center

Dory Funk Jr and Jesse Barr “The Superstar” pinned Tony Atlas and George Wells after Funk made Atlas submit to the boston crab. (7.32)
Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson welcome us to the show as this match was already underway in the ring. They spend the majority of the match discussing the King Of The Ring tournament, which of course is under a week away. Hillbilly Jim cuts a promo on Barr during the match. He says that neither he nor Funk should have laid their hands on his Uncle and Cousin.

Interview in the back with Johnny Valiant and his team of Brutus Beefcake and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine – aka The Dream Team. Mene Gene Okerlund who is interviewing the tandem, wants to know why we have not seen much of them recently. Valentine does all the talking as he proclaims himself to be a born champion. Since he has been in the WWF he has been used to winning and holding championships, recently for some reason (Valentine looks straight at Beefcake) that hasn’t been happening. It was time for them to go away and train hard and make sure they came back more focused and better than ever. Great to have The Dream Team back amongst the tag team division after their short sabbatical. It would appear that tension is apparent between Valentine and Beefcake.

Billy Jack Haynes submission over Frank Marconi (3.24) following the full nelson. This is the debut of Billy Jack in the WWF. Haynes debuts without any buildup. Haynes will make a useful addition to the WWF midcard. Haynes debuted in yellow trunks and green boots. On the back of his trunks was the state of Oregon which is where he was born. Haynes trained in Stu Hart’s infamous Dungeon and has had runs in World Class Championship Wrestling and the National Wrestling Alliance.

A clip played highlighting the highs and lows of The Dream Team. The clip focuses on their amazing run that climaxed in them winning the tag team titles and their subsequent loss of those titles at Wrestlemania 2 to the current champions The British Bulldogs. Tonight The Dream Team start that journey again. They will be tag team champions once more. Tonights main attraction match will be the returning Dream Team taking on The Killer Bees.

We don’t head to the ring just yet as we have an interview with one Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Steamboat talks about his second straight year competing in the King Of The Ring tournament and what it would mean to him to win his first accolade in the WWF. Before he can talk up his match with nemesis Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Jimmy Hart and The Hart Foundation enter the scene. Jimmy says that his Foundation were booked to have this interview time slot and not The Dragon. Steamboat says everyone is fed up to listening to The Hart Foundation moan about not getting title shots, Steamboat does his talking in the ring….as he walks off Jimmy Hart, Bret “The Hitman” Hart and Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart stare a hole through him as the camera lingers on the team.

Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and Jake “The Snake” Roberts fought to a double disqualification after Roberts shoved the referee. Then Steamboat went to drop kick Roberts, but ended up connecting with the referee, knocking him out cold. This allowed The Hart Foundation to run down the aisle and start their attack on Steamboat. The Foundation held Steamboat on either side of his arms as Roberts begins to jab at Steamboat’s ribs and face – All of a sudden The Killer Bees swarm to the ring and clear the ring of The Harts. The four tag team competitors brawl on the floor as Steamboat and Roberts go at it in the ring. It’s pandemonium in the Mid-Hudson Civic Center as we go to commercial. (9.13)
The commentators note that Steamboat may get the chance of revenge against Bret Hart at the King Of The Ring as they may be paired against one another. The Steamboat – Roberts feud continues.

The Tonga Kid pinned Paul Christy after a high cross body (3.24) The commentators discuss the impressive pairing of Haku and Tonga Kid on last weeks Wrestling Challenge. Patterson mentions that he has heard that the duo enjoyed the experience of teaming up so much, that don’t be surprised to see them on teaming up again in the near future.

After the match Hulk Hogan, the World Heavyweight Champion discussed in a talking head format, Haku’s chances of winning the King Of The Ring. Hogan describes Haku as the true “wildcard in the tournament. He also praises his recent match with Harley Race and how he proved in that match what a tough SOB he really is.

A preview of the King Of The Ring tournament is then aired. Main focuses were Harley Race, Don “King” Muraco and Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Then a preview for the tag team title match that will see The British Bulldogs meet The Foreign Legion, and finally Tito Santana will try and win the Intercontinental Championship for a third time as he meets champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage IN A CAGE!!!

Next is the return of The Dream Team.
The Dream Team (Greg “The Hammer” Valentine and Brutus Beefcake) (with Johnny Valiant) pinned The Killer Bees (B. Brian Blair and “Jumping” Jim Brunzell) (14.03) Beefcake pinned Blair after a high knee to the face. Valentine looked somewhat frustrated that he didn’t get the pinfall. McMahon suggests that The Bees attentions may not be fully on the match in hand after their altercation with The Hart Foundation earlier in the evening. Patterson tells us that Valentine in particular forced Beefcake and him to go back to the drawing board and take a long, hard good look at themselves, after not reaching their very own high standards. This is the first match from the Dream Team in near on two months. It’s good to have them back in the division.

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    Wrestling Challenge – 19/07/1986
@ East Rutherford, NJ - Meadowlands

It’s the final show until the King Of The Ring this Sunday and Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse “The Body” Ventura are excited by that fact. In tonight’s main event “Macho Man” Randy Savage will put his title on the line against the legend, Bruno Sammartino. Ventura adds that that is a sign of a true champion, not only is he defending the title tomorrow against Tito Santana, in a cage, but he will put his body on the line against the two time World Heavyweight Champion.

“The Mighty” Hercules (with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan) submission over Cousin Junior (with Uncle Elmer) with the full nelson (4.15) Pretty much an extended squash. Hercules was made to look very strong here. Bobby Heenan gets on the microphone afterwards and says that tonight is the night that The Heenan Family get’s their plan back on track. The Heenan Family plan to be the most decorated and successful group of wrestlers ever put together in any wrestling organisation. Tonight Hercules proved his superiority over a lesser talent and tomorrow “Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff will be crowned the new King in WWF, which will allow him to get a rematch with Hulk Hogan and finally win the World Heavyweight Championship. Hercules debuted new ring attire in this match. Gone is the goofy gladiatorial outfit and now he has just resorted to black trunks and white boots. The chain around his neck still stays in tack.

We then head to a talking head segment with World Champion Hulk Hogan. Over the last week Hogan has been giving his thoughts on the chances of participants of the King Of The Ring. Next up is Bret “The Hitman” Hart. Hogan feels it will be asking a lot of Hart to win the tournament, as he is more accustomed to tag team matches (Has Hogan forgot that Hart had a successful singles run in early 85 which reached it’s climax with a match against Greg “The Hammer” Valentine at the inaugural Wrestlemania?) Hogan predicts that Hart will be a winner of a King Of The Ring tournament in the future but this year won’t be his year.

The Junkyard Dog (with George “The Animal” Steele) pinned Dory Funk Jr (with Jesse Barr “The Superstar”) JYD went over clean after a head butt to Funk. Steele and Barr did not get involved with the result of the finish. JYD looks strong going into tomorrows finals. Mene Gene gets a quick word with JYD after the match (Steele, plays the fool, trying to lick the microphone) JYD says that tonight's match is just what he needed, to get him focused for tomorrow. (7.42)

A quick video package is aired, focusing on the return of The Dream Team.

Interview in the back conducted by Lord Alfred Hayes. He is standing by with “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Intercontinental Title belt around his waist, Miss Elizabeth in the background. Savage states that no one in the back forced him to sign a match with Bruno Sammartino this evening, it was all Savage’s idea. By the time sunday’s King Of The Ring event finishes, Savage will still be a champion.

Tony Atlas pinned Terry Gibbs (2.34) Atlas mows through poor Gibbs. Atlas got a really nice reaction from the crowd, however I wouldn’t expect a push to be forthcoming as there are rumours that his contract is set to expire at the beginning of the Fall, and he may very well be looking to try his luck in the NWA. Since his historic tag team title win with Rocky Johnson, Atlas has been shafted down the card as Vince McMahon’s expansion of the roster has impacted on certain individuals, with Atlas being a prime example.

Another talking head segment with Hulk Hogan. This time focusing on last year’s King Of The Ring finalist. The Hulkster say’s that Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat deserves to win the tournament more than anyone else currently in it. Hogan mentions that his heart would like Steamboat to win and believes that himself and Steamboat would have a match for the ages.

Ted Arcidi submission over Johnny K-9 with an upside down bearhug (1.31)
Arcidi was channelling some heelness here. Gone are the American striped trunks and in place of them are all black ones instead. Very aggressive style employed by Arcidi. Although the heel turn isn’t official, it would appear that the WWF are going to try something different with Arcidi. Good luck with that, as the fans have never taken to him.

Back from commercial and “Jumping” Jim Brunzell is already in the ring.

Harley Race pinned “Jumping” Jim Brunzell (of The Killer Bees) after a release belly to belly suplex (8.21) Great match between these two as Race gets even more momentum behind him. As Race celebrates his victory , WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan is out to a thunderous applause. Hogan says that over the last week he has been giving his opinion on all the participants of the King Of The Ring, however he felt that he wanted to give his opinion of Harley Race – face to face. Hogan and Race are now both in the ring toe to toe, the crowd going mad. Hogan says that he respects what Race has done, holding numerous US and World Titles – however he has never held the “big one”. Hogan says that he has been defending the belt for two years and will do for the next two, five and ten years. He will be the longest reigning champion ever in the history of the WWF but he won’t be able to do it without all his Hulkamaniacs.
The crowd are going mad. Harley Race retorts with that it’s only inevitable that he will win the World Title after he is crowned the King Of The Ring.

Tito Santana and “Macho Man” Randy Savage video package. Highlighting the several month feud that has raged on between them. At King Of The Ring tomorrow, this feud will conclude in a cage match, with Bruno Sammartino as the special guest referee. The cage match will be the first person to escape the cage or to be pinned or submit.

"The Living Legend" Bruno Sammartino defeated Intercontinental Champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage (with Miss Elizabeth) by disqualification. (10.32)
Savage turns to cheating ways as he can’t put the former World Champion away. In full view of the referee, he picks up the time keepers bell and clocks Sammartino between the eyes. The referee has no choice but to call for the disqualification.
As Savage grabs Elizabeth and drags her to the back the commentators quickly remind us to tune in tomorrow for the second King Of The Ring.

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    **Booker Note**

The much hated named "WWE Universal Championship" which has been created for the RAW brand in 2016, was in fact a name I had in mind some time ago to introduce as a mid card title in my booking saga.

From 1987 another singles championship is to be introduced called the Universal Championship and will be more or less a mid card title, whereas the Intercontinental Championship would very much be an upper mid card championship. I always thought the WWF could have done with another singles title. There are no plans though to introduce an extra tag team title

I always had it planned that the linage of the title would eventually end up crossing titles like the European Championship which WWF introduced in 1997.

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

I’ve pretty much little to zero knowledge of this era as I wasn’t born yet but the 80’s is always an era that I’ve been fascinated by, one day I’m most certainly going to go back and watch more from that era but I really do enjoy your writing style – you make everything simple and easy to read, it’s a breeze to get through your shows.

Cool to have Hulk Hogan put over Ricky Steamboat like he did in that segment. It really does endorse Steamboat to have somebody on the level of Hogan predict/say he deserves to win. Not really sure the two would have a great match together considering both are faces but it does alot to put over the Steamer. Laughed at Hogan forgetting Hart had a singles run and calling him just a tag wrestler but could win in the future, typical dick Hogan

From the Hogan/Race segment, seems like you’re having Race win the King of the Ring so he can get put into a program with Hogan for the title. Would be a cool idea for a feud really, with Harley Race being the ‘face’ of the 70s in the NWA and Hogan being the ‘face’ of the 80s in the WWF. Obviously can’t see Race winning the title off Hulk and nor should he be doing that but it gets Hogan over more to beat somebody who isn’t just your typical ‘Monster of the Month’ and is a respected legend in the business.

Likewise, Savage being in a feud with somebody of the respected nature of Bruno Sammartino is huge for his status and clocking Bruno between the eyes with a ring bell should get some good heat on him before he faces Tito Santana although it does raise an interesting scenario for their match with Bruno as the ref, is Bruno gonna play it straight and down the middle or look for revenge?

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

Thanks for the feedback. The writing style continues as I am already booked upto the week leading into Wrestlemania 3. I don't really have the time to go in full match analysis and think the writing styles gives the reader an idea of what was going on at the time.

Always found Harley Race to be criminally underused in his WWF run - sure he was a shadow of his former self but still think if booked correctly he could of made some money with Hogan.

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    King Of The Ring 86
    20/07/1986
@ Foxboro, MA - Sullivan Stadium

Three man commentary team of Vince McMahon, Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse “The Body” Ventura.

We are welcomed to the show as Vince goes into shrill mode.

Tonight we have a cage match to determine the Intercontinental Championship between champion "Macho Man" Randy Savage and challenger Tito Santana.
Ventura adds that there are huge rumours going round the back that Bruno Sammartino will not be here tonight, due to the concussion he received at the hands of Savage last night in their title match.

Also tonight The Foreign Legion will have the opportunity to taste tag team gold as they meet the champions The British Bulldogs.

And lets not forget that we will crown our second ever King Of The Ring tonight as 8 men not only fight for the royalty of the WWE, but will also be named number 1 contender to Hulk Hogan’s World Heavyweight Championship.

King Of The Ring Match: Quarter Finals.
Don “King” Muraco (with Mr Fuji) pins The Junkyard Dog (6.07) after a samoan drop. Your current King is through to the Semi Finals. It is pointed out that these two men faced each other at this stage last year. Muraco comes out on top again.

Quick interview segment in the back. As Lord Alfred Hayes tries to get a word with the Intercontinental Champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Hayes wants to know if he has heard anything about the status of Bruno Sammartino after he took him out with a time keepers bell. Savage says that he doesn’t like the tone of Hayes voice. Savage says Sammartino is of no relevance to his match tonight.

King Of The Ring Match: Quarter Finals.
Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat pinned Bret “The Hitman” Hart (with Jimmy Hart) after a high cross body (12.34)
Great fast paced match between these two. Steamboat is through to the semi finals for the second year running as well. It is mentioned before the match how The Hart Foundation attacked Steamboat last week and how there must be bad blood between these two. A Steamboat / Muraco match is set up for the first semi final.

After the match Mene Gene takes the opportunity to interview Steamboat. Gene says that later on this evening he faces the man who beat him in the finals last year – Don “King” Muraco. Steamboat says that it took him a while to come to terms with the fact he came so close to winning the KOTR last year and failed. He promises not to make that same mistake again tonight.

King Of The Ring Match: Quarter Finals.
Harley Race pinned Haku after delivering a piledriver (8.34)
It is bought up that these two fought each other only the other week. That match was a no contest, this match however has a clear winner, as Race joins Muraco and Steamboat in the semi finals. Haku gave a good account of himself, but the man that Hulk Hogan described as the wildcard of the tournament is not going to be winning it it this year.

King Of The Ring Match: Quarter Finals.
“Triple Crown” Pedro Morales pinned “Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff (with Bobby Hennan) with an inside cradle (5.02)
The surprise of the tournament so far. The commentators say that Morales could well become the most decorated man in WWF history tonight if he was to also win the King Of The Ring. Orndorff has a stunned look on his face as concentration leaves him and he is rolled up for the pinfall. Hennan scolds Orndorff , as “Mr Wonderful” apologizes for his mistake.
Morales is going to the semi final to meet Harley Race.

    Tag Team Title Match:
The Foreign Legion (Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik) (with Classie Freddie Blassie) pinned Tag Team Champions The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith and The Dynamite Kid) (7.44)
This is not a popular decision in Massachusetts, and I suspect amongst the WWF fans.
Gotta say I didn’t see this coming . The Bulldogs are by far the most over tag team on the roster and up until the last few months Legion have been used to put up and coming teams over. The crowd shit over the result as Volkoff pins Dynamite after catching him coming off the top rope and power slamming him to the mat for the clean pinfall.

King Of The Ring Match: Semi Finals
Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat pinned Don “King” Muraco (with Mr Fuji) after a sunset flip. (14.31)
Steamboat has another impressive match with a different style of wrestler to Bret Hart. These two are of course no stranger to one another, after their epic feud last year. This was also the match that was the final of the 1985 King Of The Ring. This time Steamboat is able to avenge last years heartbreaking defeat. Steamboat is in the final for the second year running.
But alas, just like last year, Steamboat will not be heading into the final at full capacity, as just as he is celebrating in the ring, in sneaks Jake “The Snake” Roberts, who drops Steamboat with a DDT. Monsoon adds that Steamboat has been suffering from severe headaches over the past month after he was DDDT’ed to the concrete floor by Roberts.

King Of The Ring Match: Semi Finals
Harley Race pinned “Triple Crown” Pedro Morales after a powerslam (10.01)
The second semi final of the night sees two former world champions collide. A dream match between Race and Morales. Harley Race after being in the federation a few months now, is finally showing us what all the fuss is about. Ventura, spouts that Race is the new number one contender to Hogan’s World Championship, however McMahon, says that Steamboat still stands in his way. Ventura says that he won’t be competing at 100%, so it will be easy pickings for Race tonight.

    Intercontinental Championship : Cage Match
Intercontinental Champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage (with Miss Elizabeth) pinned Tito Santana after Danny Davis delivered a fast count on Santata. (22.32)
Before the match Bruno Sammartino makes his way down as the special guest referee but Randy Savage got the match changed and that Savage threatened Jack Tunney he would leave the arena if he didn't have another referee in his match as he didn't think Sammartino was able to be here tonight and he wanted the match to go ahead so he could beat Santana to a bloody pulp. Sammartino calls this a farce.
For too long the matches between Savage and Santana have ended up with outside interference. Sammartino’s presence should stop that tonight. The commentators play up the fact that only last night Bruno Sammartino took a chair shot to the head.

Savage and Santana have yet another 4 star match as they pummel the holy bejeezus out of one another. These two have just clicked over the last 6 months up and down the country.
The match goes into overbooked madness in the last 5 minutes. Firstly the referee is bumped and taken out of the match altogether.
Secondly, “Adorable” Adrian Adonis and Bob “The Ace” Orton come out with David Sammartino in the aisle.
Jimmy Hart has his megaphone as he calls out to Bruno to get his attention.
Poor David Sammartino has been placed in a dress and is wearing make-up. Adonis and Orton start to lay the boots to Sammartino junior as Bruno has no choice but to go and save his son. Bruno, Orton and Adonis all battle to the back.

Another referee comes to run down the aisle to take over officiating, but a second official appears, and starts to discuss with the first referee that he has the match covered. That referee – Danny Davis. The same corrupt official that cost Tito Santana the title back in March.

Santana and Savage are both down, through exhaustion as Danny Davis climbs the cage and gets himself into the surrounded ring. He is trying the revive Savage.
Wait a minute….what has just conveniently fallen out of Davis pocket in front of Savage…….it’s some form of a foreign object. Davis goes to check on the fallen official….which means he is unable to see Savage crack Santana right between the eyes with the foreign object. Santana is out cold. Davis turns around to see Savage laying on top of the former champion. Davis looks all confused as to what has happened, as the crowd boo. He is asking Miss Elizabeth if anything untoward has taken place, she shies away. She is too scared to get involved in the decision. Davis has no choice but to make the three count.

Savage retains. What a match. Davis raises the champions hand, as McMahon and Monsoon are questioning Davis integrity. Don’t think we have heard the last of the Davis saga.

We are about to crown a new King Of The Ring, but before we introduce our competitors the crowd gives out the biggest pop of the night as World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan makes his way to the ring to be your guest commentator. McMahon and Monsoon welcomes Hogan as Ventura keeps quiet. Hogan says he is gonna enjoy the match coming up brother, as he will find out who his next match will be against.

    King Of The Ring Final:
Harley Race pins Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat after delivering a piledriver (14.32) Race drops Steamboat on his already defective head for the three count and the crown and title of King Of The Ring. After the match Race leans over the rope and demands Hogan gets in the ring now with “The King Of Wrestling” Harley Race. Hogan stands up from behind the commentary booth as Ventura urges Hogan to be a man and get in the ring with a wrestling machine like Race.
After much goading by Ventura. Hogan and Race are in the ring together as poor Ricky Steamboat hobbles off up the aisle after another losing effort in the KOTR final. Race cheap shots Hogan, who retaliates with fists as officials swarm the ring to split the World Champion and his number 1 contender up. The King Of The Ring finishes with Hogan being hauled back as he demands the officials let go of him.

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    WWF News

This is the first news update since the day after Wrestlemania 2 and a lot has been happening since then.

This news update comes off the back off an interesting King Of The Ring tournament that crowned not only the new King of the WWF, but also named him the number one contender to the World Heaveyweight Title.

That man was Harley Race, the now dubbed “King Of Wrestling”. I think it is safe to say that this hasn’t sent shockwaves through the world as it was very much expected that Race would get a substantial push upon leaving NWA. Race is a multiple world champion and has a huge respect in the wrestling world. Just like he did in NWA with Ric Flair, his feud with The Hulkster is expected to truly cement Hogan as one of the all time greats ever. Hogan’s popularity is still unparalleled and would be surprised if the WWF saw fit to strip the title from him, however Race is not any other competitor and although age may be against him (he is 43 now) a world title reign in the WWF can not be ruled out.

Race / Hogan is provisionally booked for the next Saturday’s Night Main Event.

Speaking of Saturday’s Night Main Event, this will be the 5th edition of the popular spectacular. With Hogan and Race expected to headline the event, expect another star studded card.

Another match that is being expected to be taking place is "The Living Legend" Bruno Sammartino taking on “Adorable” Adrian Adonis.
Adonis is almost unrecognisable since taking Jimmy Hart on as his manager and changing his gimmick, he is also extremely overweight. Although officials are said to be down on the fact that he has garnered so much weight they also realise that he is one of the most over heels on the roster.
The Sammartino / Adonis feud picked up a notch on Sunday at the KOTR event. Adonis, with the help of Jimmy Hart, his manager and Bob “The Ace” Orton completely manhandled and embarrassed Bruno’s son, David. The attack is sure to provoke a reaction from the former 2 time World Champion.

In linked news the attack is also going to explain why David Sammartino is no longer on our television screens. David, has been told that he will no longer be used as an “on air” talent and will fulfil his house show commitments till the end of the month, until being released from his contract. David Sammartino has never moved out of his father's shadow and the writing has been on the wall for him for some time.

Although David and the WWF are about to part company, the WWF has promised Bruno high profile matches with Adonis and Intercontinental Champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage over the coming months. This only temporarily papers over the cracks in the WWF and Sammartino relationship and there is talk that the two parties may well go their separate ways for good soon. If Vince McMahon is serious about keeping a huge attraction like Sammartino on the roster, then don’t be surprised that he is given the Intercontinental Title in the near future.

David Sammartino is not the only wrestler to be cut for the WWF roster, as McMahon trims the ranks in order for expected more arrivals in the near future.

The biggest cut is Captain Lou Albano. The man who has managed multiple tag team champions over the years – including leading The British Bulldogs to the titles as recently as Wrestlemania 2 has come to a mutual termination of his contract with the WWF. Albano has been a mainstay of the federation since the late sixties and will be hugely missed. In that time he has managed some of the current greats such as “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka, Don Muraco, Greg Valentine and most notably leading Ivan Koloff to the World Title, ending Bruno Sammartino’s 7 year reign.

Albano has been used less so since the beginning of 1985. Only being used to guide The US Express and The British Bulldogs to the tag titles and being involved in the “Macho Man” Randy Savage / George “The Animal” Steele feud. The WWF felt that due to the major influx of manager talents that now was a better time than any to allow Albano to pursue “other interests”. The parties left on good terms and hope to work together again in the future.

It certainly is all change at the moment in the WWF, as they aggressively continue their national expansion.

Another mainstay of the roster over the last 15 – 20 years is also soon to be retiring as an on air talent. That man is “Classie” Freddie Blassie.

Blassie, like Albano has been a huge influence on the current crop of heel managers (currently Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, Johnny Valiant, Jimmy Hart and Mr Fuji), but now at the age 68 feels it is time to retire from professional wrestling.
It is felt that as a thank you to Freddie for his years of loyal service that his tag team that he currently manages have been given the tag team titles.

Indeed, we have new tag team champions. The Foreign Legion (Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik) dislodged The British Bulldogs from the summit of the tag team world after Volkoff pinned The Dynamite Kid. The British Bulldogs were Champions for 105 Days (3 and a half months) and the timing of the title change is questionable as The British Bulldogs are easily the most over team on the roster. These two teams are paired up still over the coming house shows so expect this feud to continue. Also there have been lots of rumours going round as to who (if anyone) will pick up the managerial role left by Blassie, for the tag team champs. Mr Fuji has been mentioned and is the current favourite. There is also talk of the WWF looking outside of the federation also to add a new manager to their ranks.

A few other names to mention that have left the federation since last update –

Ivan Putski and The Spoiler have also been released from their contracts. Neither were seen as indispensable to the roster and space was required for all the new arrivals that are going to be coming into the federation over the last half of the year.

Another wrestler who is working his termination is Uncle Elmer, a member of the trio stable of The Hillbillies. The 49 year old is also part of the cost cutting measures before “new blood” is injected into the roster. The future of Cousin Junior is still up in the air, however, one man who won’t be going anywhere is Hillbilly Jim. Jim is a very close friend of current World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan, and friends in high places can help you avoid the cut. Truth be told it is rather surprising that The Hillbillies are being disbanded, or at least one of them is leaving as they are extremely over with the WWF crowd. The current feud with Dory Funk Jr and Jesse Barr is going to incorporate Elmer’s departure.

On the flipside to the departures we have at least one new superstar that has debuted on WWF television. That man is Billy Jack Haynes. Haynes has entered the WWF as a babyface and is expected to be positioned as a mid to high midcarder. WWF is high on the former Stu Hart trained talent from Portland, Oregon and talk is already going round that he could be positioned as a threat to the Intercontinental Championship.

“Macho Man” Randy Savage is still the Intercontinental Champion after winning what was the blow off to the six month feud with Tito Santana. Savage is booked to work with multiple opponents over the next few months. Names that Savage will be working with include Bruno Sammartino, The Junkyard Dog, Billy Jack Haynes and George “The Animal” Steele. WWF are at the moment not 100% at who will be Savage’s next feud, but JYD has many backers in the office, who like to see him get a run with Savage.

Tito Santana, now has a couple of feuds simmering. “Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff is the first feud on the horizon. The two have been starting to get in each others business since Santana showed concern at the way Bobby “The Brain” Heenan, Orndorff’s manager was treating him at the time. Heenan began to show a distinct lack of interest in Orndorff after his continuous failures to dethrone World Champion Hulk Hogan. Orndorff took offense to Tito’s concern and in response ending up costing him a match after he attacked him wearing a mask.

The other feud that could be about to erupt is Santana’s issues with crooked referee Danny Davis. Davis and Santana first started having issues when he cost Santana the Intercontinental Championship back in February. Things died down over the last few months, however they have boiled over again after Davis yet again cost Santana a high profile match with Savage. Davis is expected to become an official in ring talent over the coming months. He is currently getting the best training possible by wrestling on house shows and TV as the masked jobber Mr X.

The Heenan Family looks like it could be set to implode. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan’s utter determination to dethrone Hulk Hogan as World Champion has caused him to take his eye off the ball with his current family and look longingly at Harley Race.
Big John Studd is expected to complete a face turn in the near future and begin an intense feud with remaining Family members.
King Kong Bundy – Big John Studd is expected to be the main feud. There are currently no plans to make Race a full time member of The Heenan Family, although he is expected to become a close associate to the stable. With regards to the other members of the faction, Bundy is expected to be paired with Hogan for a World Title programme sooner than later. Orndorff is preoccupied with Santana, which leaves Hercules. Hercules has recently had a bit off a make over. Gone is the goofy gladiatorial outfit, and he has now started wearing black pants and white boots, with a thick chain draped over his shoulders. WWF is looking to push him back up the card as he is very much seen as the jobber in the group.

“Adorable” Adrian Adonis very much is getting a lot of air time recently. His feud with Bruno Sammartino is expected to run till the end of the next Saturday’s Night Main Event, but it would appear that his long term angle is with Rowdy Roddy Piper. Piper has been off TV for a couple of months and very much is expected to come back as a face. Adonis has given Piper’s Pit a complete make over, rebranding it The Flower Shop, which will surely irate the Rowdy one. Adonis also appears to have become good friends with Pipers comrade Bob “The Ace” Orton and the former King Of The Ring Don Muraco. The Piper – Adonis feud is expected to simmer along nicely over the coming months until exploding in the Fall.

Bob “The Ace” Orton and Don Muraco have recently been paired together and will add weight to the current heavy tag ranks. The team has been branded “The Magnificent Aces”. Mr Fuji is not expected to stay on as Muraco’s manager which will leave the new team of The Aces managerless, which is expected to stay that way. Orton of course is already a former tag team champion (having won it with “Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff) and Muraco a two time Intercontinental Champion and King Of The Ring winner so the team is expected to be quite the threat in the tag team division. Where this leaves Mr Fuji is anyone's guess as he will now have no clients, this is why yet again the rumours with him aligning with the Foreign Legion are pretty strong.

Another talk show segment is expected to debut over the coming weeks. Not only will you have The Flower Shop headed by “Adorable” Adrian Adonis but you are also about to see The Snake Pit. The Snake Pit will of course be hosted by relative newcomer Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Roberts has yet to fully be involved with top talent since his debut in February, mostly going over enhancement talent. However, WWF realise his potential and are set to give him a talk show to showcase his talking skills. He has also been involved with a feud with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. Steamboat is generally considered one of the best workers in the business so a feud with him will only help promote his talents to the WWF audience. This feud has some good heat on it, following Jake being the cause of the recent concussion that Steamboat suffered, after getting DDT’ed on the concrete floor. This is another match that is expected to be on the SNME5 card.

This just seems like a rehash of what happened in 1985. Danny Davis as the heel ref and things like that should be changed around.

Man...... You're are one the best BTB writers out there and a credit to this section loved KOTR keep doing what you're doing
The most amazing thing about this recent conversation is that I've learned AON is even more of a waste of space than I thought he was previously

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    Cheers for the feedback.

Im very much of the opinion if it ain't broke don't fix it. Certain booking decisions in the past in the WWF won't be changed, like the Danny Davis, heel referee angle.

But for everything the WWF did right, they got a hell of a lot wrong. Don't expect to see The Machines as an example show up. Or Terry Taylor to have a "rooster" gimmick. So there will be changes in the history. The Race/Hogan feud never reall kicked off in real life is one example of changes.

    Keep reading guys. Thanks

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    Prime Time Wrestling – 22/07/1986
@ Rochester, NY - War Memorial

We start the show with stills from sunday night's King Of The Ring.
Harley Race is the new number one contender to the World Heavyweight Title and the new King Of The Ring.
The Foreign Legion as new tag team champions.
Tito Santana was screwed out of the Intercontinental Championship yet again after Danny Davis never saw the foreign object that knocked Santana out cold.

Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson are your hosts as they say tonight begins the fall out from
    King Of The Ring.

With that out comes the new King Of The Ring, “The King Of Wrestling” Harley Race. The crowd begins to boo him as he enters the ring. Race says that he has proved to the world what he already knew, that he truly is a King Of Wrestling, amongst the pretenders within the WWF. Race states that he wants to face Hulk Hogan right now for the World Title. Race waits for 30 seconds and then gets on the microphone again, calling Hulk Hogan a coward and the fact that realisation has settled in that he will never be able to beat Race.

With this, Pedro Morales comes out from the back. He gets a pretty decent reaction from the crowd. Morales states that Race is just trying to make himself look good. He knows full well that Hogan is not here tonight. Race retorts by saying that it’s disgusting that the so called flagship of the federation has not even bothered to turn up. Race continues, that when he was fighting all over the world as a champion he never had a night off. Race says that he is dressed to fight and therefore if Hogan is too cowardly to turn up he will happily take on Morales tonight. We have our main event for the evening.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts pinned Don Driggers with a DDT (2.16) This match is over before it even began. Roberts takes to the microphone afterwards as he is interviewed by Mene Gene Okerlund after the match. He says that in a few weeks we will be seeing the start of a new talk show segment called The Snake Pit. He says that he wants Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat to be his first guest.

We then get a montage that has led us to the next upcoming match. We see the issues that have been taking place between The Hillbillies and Dory Funk Jr and Jesse Barr.

Hillbilly Jim (with Uncle Elmer and Cousin Junior) pinned Jesse Barr “The Superstar” (with Dory Funk Jr) with a big boot to the face. (3.67) Before the bell even rung all five men started weighing in with right and left hands. The referee had seen enough and throws out the three competitors that were not meant to be in the match. This allowed Jim to pretty much dominate Barr and finish him off in relatively quick course.

Interview in the back with The Hart Foundation (Bret “The Hitman” Hart and Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart), with their manager Jimmy Hart. During their time on screen they warn The Killer Bees that they should never have gotten involved in The Harts business a couple of weeks back, The Harts say that their tag team name suits them to the ground as they are annoying like bees, buzzing around and annoying people. The Killer Bees then also join the segment. B Brian Blair takes the microphone and say that The Harts cheapshotted Ricky Steamboat when they had no need to do so. The Killer Bees challenge The Harts to a match on saturday night.

The Moondogs (Spot and Rex)defeated Nelson Veilleux & Serge Jodoin at (2:17) when Spot pinned Jodoin with an elbow drop from the middle turnbuckle as the opponent was laid across Rex' knee. The Moondogs make exceedingly quick work of the jobbers. The Moondogs are certainly being booked stronger compared to this time last year, however I would expect they have a long way to go before being considered viable tag team championship contenders.

Preview for Wrestling Challenge where you will be able to see the new tag team champions, The Foreign Legion in non title action. The Heenan Family will be on The Flower Shop amongst other exciting stuff.

King Kong Bundy (with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan) pinned Corporal Kirchner after an avalanche. (3.45) Ouch. Kirchner gets the jobber treatment as Bundy practically murders him. Heenan gets on the microphone and would like to say to Harley Race that the whole of The Heenan Family would like to congratulate the amazing efforts of his at The King Of The Ring. Vince McMahon bemoans the fact that Heenan is kissing ass.

Interview in the back with the Intercontinental Champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. Savage says that he is looking for a new challenger now he has laid waste to Tito Santana. Savage talks about himself being the greatest champion of all time. “Adorable” Adrian Adonis and Jimmy Hart then enter. Savage at first looks up for a fight. However Adonis says that Savage needs to chill out, Adonis is not here for his title, but his woman. Savage starts to go angry, but then composes himself….of course Adonis won’t be any threat to his woman. Adonis asks permission for Miss Elizabeth to be in his corner next week for his non title match with Hulk Hogan. Savage will think about Adonis’ proposal. Adonis then takes Elizabeth in hand and says he is so excited as they can work on each others makeup before the big match. He promised to take good care of her.

The Fabulous Rougeaus Brothers (Raymond and Jacques) pinned Johnny K9 and Steve Lombardi at (3.31) after a boston crab by Raymond and a jumping knee drop by Jacques for the pinfall on K9. The Rougeaus Brothers are back to winning ways after their first defeat to the now current tag team champs The Foreign Legion.

A promo for Hulk Hogan the World Heavyweight Champion is aired.

“King Of Wrestling” Harley Race pinned “Triple Crown” Pedro Morales after delivering a piledriver. Race defeats Morales cleanly for the second time in as many days. (12.34) This match went slightly longer than their semi final encounter the other night. Race says that he wants Hogan next week face to face. Bobby “The Brain” Heenan leads out King Kong Bundy, Hercules and “Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff into the aisle and applaud Race as the show goes off the air. Curious by his absence was Big John Studd the final member of The Heenan Family.

I have modified the first post of this thread.

As of now it now lists the "current" champions up to booking and also a list of all the big shows.

In the near future, the current roster up to the booking and the title history will also be added.

Re: Rebooking The WWE, Starting in Jan 1985....

    Wrestling Challenge - 26/7/86
    Richfield, OH - Coliseum

Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse “The Body” Ventura welcome us as they go over the Harley Race victory on Prime Time and of course his big King Of The Ring victory.

Instead of a match kicking things off this week we will start with “Adorable” Adrian Adonis and The Flower Shop. With Adonis, is his manager Jimmy Hart and Miss Elizabeth, who doesn’t look happy to be by Adonis side at all. Adonis says that he is currently the most controversial man in pro wrestling today. He wants us all to tune in on Prime Time where he will beat Hulk Hogan clean and earn the right to face him in a future title match. He would like to thank our Intercontinental Champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage for allowing him to play “make up” with Miss Elizabeth. He calls her his best friend and good luck charm. He wants Miss Elizabeth to be in his corner on Tuesday night.

Adonis then introduces us to his guests this week – The Heenan Family.

Out comes Bobby Heenan, followed by King Kong Bundy, “The Mighty” Hercules, “Mr Wonderful” Paul Orndorff and bringing up the rear – Big John Studd.

Adonis starts by asking Heenan that there has been some visible strain within The Heenan Family after the last few months, he points out Mr Wonderful’s failure to capture the World Title and also Big John Studd’s lack of effort. Heenan says that The Heenan Family is the most prestigious collection of wrestlers in the wrestling world and will not allow “carriers” within his stable. He says The Heenan Family has not been firing on all cylinders recently and things have to change……NOW.

With that Bundy, Hercules and Orndorff, triple team Big John Studd. Studd is on the floor as his three Family collegues continue to attack. Adonis screams in a comedy moment and ushers Miss Elizabeth backstage. Poor John Studd is down and out as the remaining Family members and their manager gloat to the booing crowd. This cements Big John Studd's face turn.

Billy Jack Haynes defeated AJ Petruzzi via submission with the full nelson at (2:52) Match number two for Billy Jack and win number two as he makes short work of jobber Petruzzi. Lord Alfred Hayes gets a quick interview with him after. Hayes declares that he has entered the federation for one reason, and one reason only – to win championship gold. He sets his sights on “Macho Man” and his Intercontinental Championship. Wow. Quite the statement of intent from a man who has only had his second match in the WWF. Definitely one to watch.

A video for World champion Hulk Hogan airs. Be sure to check him out in action in Non Title action on Tuesday night’s Prime Time, when he takes on “Adorable” Adrian Adonis.

Tag Team Champions The Foreign Legion (Nikolai Volkoff and The Iron Sheik) (with Classie Freddie Blassie) pinned Corporal Kirchner and Blackjack Mulligan after Volkoff pinned Kirchner after a backbreaker (5.34) The new tag team champions are in the house and they get booed out of the building as Blassie gloats of ending The British Bulldogs tag team reign. Blassie declares his champions as fighting champions and has had the following match changed from a non title match to a title match. Odd pairing of Kirchner and Mulligan. Mulligan’s past as a tag team champion is brought up. The Foreign Legion are successful in their first title defence. After the match out from the back comes the former champions, The British Bulldogs, they state that they have just got out of a meeting this morning with Jack Tunney and they have a rematch signed with the champions in a couple of weeks time.

Interview with The Killer Bees in the back. They say that The British Bulldogs are as good as any team in federation, but after they beat The Hart Foundation tonight in the main event, they will be the next team in line to challenge for tag team gold not The Bulldogs.

“Adorable” Adrian Adonis bumps into Intercontinental Champion “Macho Man” Randy Savage” backstage, before Savage is about to have an interview. He asks permission to have the delectable, Miss Elizabeth in his corner for his match with Hulk Hogan on Prime Time. Savage says that he is happy to oblige – but there will be hell to pay if Miss Elizabeth is in any way put in danger.

Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat pinned Moondog Spot after a high cross body (4.53) Spot was accompanied to the ring by his tag team partner Rex, but Rex was ejected when he tried to stay at ringside, the commentators say it is due to him not having a manager's license. This is Steamboat’s first match since his loss to Harley Race at King Of The Ring, after the match he gets on the microphone and says that he disappointed his fans and himself in failing in his second final, he accepts Jake “The Snake” Roberts offer to be his first guest on The Snake Pit.

Quick run down on what to expect on tuesday’s edition of Prime Time Wrestling. Hulk Hogan AND Harley Race will be in the same building as Hogan will face “Adorable” Adrian Adonis and Harley Race takes on all american Tony Atlas.

The Hart Foundation (Bret “The Hitman” Hart and Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart) (with Jimmy Hart) pinned The Killer Bees (B. Brian Blair and “Jumping” Jim Brunzell) (13:54) after Blair was pinned by Neidhart after a Hart Attack. These two teams know each other very well and this match highlighted that. This match was probably even better than their curtain jerker at Wrestlemania 2. The Harts are really in a good groove at the moment and their team work has improved tenfold since teaming up for the first time last year, The Bees on the other hand even though still popular with the fans are not getting many big victories recently.
