    Europa League & Premier League Discussion 16/02, 17/02 & 18/02

This week the Europa League round of the last 32 gets underway, so here's a selection of the fixtures taking place:

    Tuesday 16th February

    Everton vs. Sporting Lisbon (17:45)

    Thursday 18th February

    Ajax vs. Juventus (18:00)
    Fulham v Shakhtar Donetsk (20:05)
    Liverpool v Unirea Urziceni (20:05)

A few teams in the Premier League still have games in hand, so unusually for a European week, there will be some Premiership action as well.

    Tuesday 16th February

Stoke City vs. Manchester City (19:45)

    Wednesday 17th February

Wigan Athletic vs. Bolton Wanderers (20:00)

Whats up with a 5:45 kick off in England? I thought the early kick off's were because of time zones?

I'm presuming that they can't play it on the Thursday as both Liverpool and Everton are home on that match night, so they moved one of the games to a Tuesday. By moving the game it clashes with the Champions League, so they brought the kick off time forward as it then doesn't clash with the Champions League games. UEFA are very anal about other games being played at the same time as Champions League games.

I've just watched the first half of the Everton game. Everton played well and deserved their 1-0 lead. I'd favour Everton winning this tie.

    Tonights Premiership Teams:

Stoke: Sorensen, Huth, Shawcross, Abdoulaye Faye, Higginbotham, Delap, Whitehead, Whelan, Lawrence, Sidibe, Fuller.
Subs: Begovic, Beattie, Kitson, Pugh, Diao, Sanli, Collins.

Man City: Given, Richards, Toure, Lescott, Garrido, Adam Johnson, Vieira, De Jong, Barry, Santa Cruz, Adebayor.
Subs: Taylor, Bridge, Onuoha, Zabaleta, Ireland, Wright-Phillips, Petrov.

    Referee: Alan Wiley (Staffordshire)

Man City were very lucky last night and, amazingly, worse than they were on Saturday.

How did Viera get away with that kick during the match? It was awful. Good job the FA have brought him up for it. He should get a ban for a few games if you ask me. Terrible.

Seems like it was an uneventful game at Wigan last night - 0-0 between them and Bolton. Both managers seem happy with a point.

Anyone watching any of the matches tonight? I might try and catch some of the Ajax/Juve game, i'm not sure if I'll watch the Liverpool game - might dip in and out of it whilst watching the winter olympics covarage (if the hockey is on). I'd say a 2-0 win for Liverpool, and a 0-2 loss for Fulham.

Same with the slap to the face on Whitehead and the goal they chalked off. The referee was shit, but it's no big deal, we're only aiming to stay up again this season, which we should do with ease.

Ah yes, I haven't seen that one properlly, just a quick glance of it, but it did seem like a legit goal. Maybe you'll get a bit of luck in the cup replay next week. Flippin heck, you must be bored of Stoke/Man City games!!

Better than several Bolton or Wigan games in a row I suppose. Both the FA Cup games will be worth the time with a draw in the 1st and the expectancy of a win in the replay. And the league home game made me prouder of my team than I have been in a long time.

Going back to the Stoke/City match, how do Stoke get away with so much blatent time wasting?

They wasted about 15 minutes just on throw ins, goalkeeper was keeping hold of the ball for 30-60 seconds at a time and every time a City player would challenge for an header the Stike player would go down rolling around.

Just to clarify the ref was bad both ways.

I noticted that aswell this season with Stoke. Whenever they are in a good position they use up as much time as they can, I didnt notice them doing it so much last season. It's understandable if it's near the end and they are 1-0 up but they seem to do it now as soon as they score or get level.

    Re: Europa League & Premier League Discussion 16/02, 17/02 & 18/02

I assume it's because Delap is trying to create a scoring oppertunity, my guess is that ref's see Stoke throw ins as being similar to free kicks and he thinks they need time to line up and what not. The towel is fucking ridiculous though, as is the time it takes, but it's effective when used against the better teams.

I've never seen Sorensen hold the ball from between 30-60 seconds, but time does drag when you're watching Stoke, so I can see why you'd think that it was that long.

The ref might've been bad both ways, but obviously with a heavy percentage of that going against Stoke. Faye was rightly sent off, Viera wasn't, I don't remember too much rolling around from Whelan when he had some studs marks imprinted on his testicles, Fuller possibly could've had a penalty and there was nothing wrong with Shawcross' goal, if anything Given ran into him.

I watched the full game at my local and I ended up timing him in the end, 53 seconds for one of them.

Also with the taking time with the trow ins if somebody if taking that long on throw ins/free kicks isnt the ref meant to stop his watch, if he did that we would have had a lot more injury time.

I'm not arguing with the Shawcross goal or the Vieira sending off but every time we went for a 50/50 the Stoke player went down holding his knee/face and the ref would give the free kick to Stoke.
