    Goalkeeper Kenny fails drugs test

Sheffield United have suspended keeper Paddy Kenny for failing a drugs test.

Kenny tested positive for a banned substance, ephedrine, following last season's Championship play-off semi-final second leg against Preston.

Ephedrine is believed to be present in a cough mixture that the Republic of Ireland star bought over the counter, BBC Radio Sheffield understands.

"We confirm Paddy has been suspended. This is an ongoing, confidential matter," read a club statement.

The 31-year-old will now be subject to a disciplinary inquiry by the Football Association and faces a range of possible sanctions from a reprimand up to a two-year ban.

The FA and UK Sport - the agency responsible for drug testing programmes in sport - have so far refused to comment.

Ephedrine is on the list of the World Anti-Doping Agency's specified substances but is contained in some cold cures, and a positive test does not carry the usual automatic two-year suspension.

Since 2007, however, four rugby players - two from rugby union and two from rugby league - have all been served with two-year bans after testing positive for ephedrine.

In three of those cases, the players involved took ephedrine tablets before a match, while in the fourth case the source of the stimulant was unclear.

In order to minimise his punishment, Kenny will have to attempt to prove that he did not take the drug in order to enhance his performance.
With how rough this bloke is, I am not surprised in the slightest.

The news have just said that ephedrine could be found in cough medicine ...
Either way they have to stamp out any drug use in Football so I hope he gets a decent ban, think the max he could get is 2 years.

It was probably in his medication.

He will get a ban no doubt, I'm expecting a 6 to 8 month ban. I'd be very surprised if he got more than 12 months.

Yeah I think 6 months sounds about right ... I Mean Rio Ferdinand only got 8 months for missing a pre-arranged doping test.

Apparently, if he can convince a panel of 4 people that it was part of medication and he has no intention of taking a banned substance then he could get off with a mere warning.

Which is fair enough I think if he's innocent, there's obviously good reason that it doesn't carry an automatic 2-year ban, and that being that it could easily be taken accidentally. If he's innocent he doesn't deserve to be banned for a legitimate mistake, I think the most he should get in this case is perhaps extra tests in the future to make sure he is more careful, nothing more.
