Sunderland To Appeal Red Card For McCartney

    From BBC

Sunderland will make an appeal against George McCartney's red card during Saturday's defeat at Manchester City.

The 27-year-old was sent off in the 15th minute for pulling back Shaun Wright-Phillips.

The City winger was chasing a long ball when the incident occurred and referee Steve Tanner consulted with his assistant before making the decision.

"He made slight contact but Wright-Phillips would not have got the ball," Black Cats boss Ricky Sbragia said.

"I'm dumfounded as to why he was sent off. A long debate ensued and the linesman made the decision," Sbragia added after his side's 1-0 defeat.
I could see this being wiped out but then again i can see it standing too.

    Tough one to call.

Basically, Wright-Phillps had skinned McCartney and was going through and all McCartney did was put a hand on his shoulder and there was a small tug but nothing malicious, Wright-Phillips stayed on his feet and just waved his arms a bit.

At best it was a yellow card.

Well it could be just because it's one of your players but I really can't see any ref giving a red just for that.

Can't find a video of it anywhere but I personally cannot see a ref giving a red card for a tug.

A straight red for shirt pulling? Seems very harsh as a lot of the time people dont even get booked for it.

I also assume to had a bet with Crocker regarding sig's again?

And the ref didn't give it, it was the assistant.

I can see why he give it he was the last man and weather its a tug or a tackle that equates to a sending off if he felt SWP could reach the ball(which looking back at the replays he proberly wouldnt but at the time I thought he could).

I basically said he shouldnt have got the red card, but the rule is if he gives a free kick there he has to send im off.

Re: Sunderland To Appeal Red Card For McCartney

The way i saw it was the ball was in Fulops hands as the tug happened and i know SWP is quick but he's not that quick and the keeper had it covered.

I could understand the red if SWP had gone to ground but he hadn't so i think the card will be removed hopefully.

Oh and also, if McCartney got a red for his tackle, why didn't Malbranque get one for the penalty?

    Poor refereeing on both decisions.

Thats what im saying it shouldnt have been a free kick but if he gives a free kick he has to send him off, at the end of the day if he's stoping a goalscoring oppertunity(which the assistant thought he did) then he has to give him a red card.
