Ireland reject European Reform Treaty

Quote:
With all official constituency counts in, the Lisbon Treaty has been officially rejected by the Irish electorate.

Nationally, the final count saw 862,415 voting No, a 53.4% majority, with 752,451 voting Yes (46.6%).

The results followed a day-long count that revealed how rural and working-class voters heavily rejected the EU’s blueprint to modernise its powers and institutions in line with its rapid expansion since 2004.

Ireland was the only EU member to vote on the Lisbon Treaty through a national referendum, while all others are decided through their national governments.

The Irish rejection technically means it cannot become law throughout the community.

Taoiseach Brian Cowen will join other EU leaders at a summit next week to try to negotiate a new way forward.
I didnt vote, but if i had i would have voted No. If your wondering, The Lisbon Treaty would have created an elected EU president and an EU foreign minister while cutting back the number of national vetoes for each country. Basically, the smaller countires have even less say in matters.

“If supporters of the EU constitution cannot even win in Ireland – one of the most pro-EU countries in Europe – it is clear that their vision for the future of Europe is now discredited in a most fundamental way.”

We were the only country to vote on it, so Your Welcome Europe

I don't know much about this subject, but having a European president and prime minister does sound like a horrible idea. Kudos to Ireland for voting no. Places like Estonia and Luxembourg would pretty much become invisible (well, more than they already are).

Polish President Lech Kacynski has refused to sign the Lisbon Treaty following Ireland's rejection of the document.

Mr Kacynski is quoted in a newspaper interview saying it would be pointless to ratify the treaty following the Irish 'no' vote.

The Polish Parliament voted to ratify the Treaty in April, but it still needs the President's signature.

EU leaders urged member states to continue with the ratification process despite the Irish vote and the Polish stance is likely to anger French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who recently took over the EU presidency.
If it wasent dead before, it is now.

I am really afraid they are going to try this BS in the US.

A North American Union...

Personally I would like one, one common currency between the three countries, free movement, it wouldn't be terrible saves time at the border with goods espicially and makes it so the jobs go where they are best suited.

And other countries get a vote in what we do.

No thanks.

You are right there.

I have given up on the U.S. anyway.

hmm, I've always kind of had this stance that globalization was a bad thing...

but maybe that's just me.

NO

It can get much worse, and it's continuing to get worse everyday. Having a North American Union would only speed up the deterioration of our economy.

I'm against globalization as well. I'm against the North American Union which will be forming in 2010. I don't care how "convenient" it makes things, I'm still against it.
