Should Perjury equal removal from office?

I'm not sure how much press this gets outside of Michigan, but the Mayor of Detroit has been in hot water for a while now because of lies about an affair with his former chief of staff, who has since left the position. He is a married man with kids, and in the past few years has been under previous hot water with other scandals that include: using funds to pay for personal vacations and adult entertainment for himself, a brand new Lincoln Navigator, the list goes on....

This comes from nowpublic.com.

Quote:
Today's word of the day: hubris. Both Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and New York Governor Eliot Spitzer need to write that word about 500 times.

But in Detroit, the sex, lies, and texting scandals took a nasty turn as Kilpatrick blamed his problems on racism. Never mind the $8.4 million taxpayers spent in a lawsuit filed by cops who lost their jobs for investigating Kilpatrick's use of tax-funded security to cover up his philandering.

Another entrant in the politicians-behaving-badly non-beauty pageant: Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Boycotted by members of his own city council and surrounded by calls for his resignation, Kilpatrick sidesteps potential perjury charges in his own sex scandal to play the race card.
Using the n-word, Kilpatrick lashed out at media and citizens alike, accusing everyone, it seems of a "lynch mob mentality." According to the Detroit Free Press, "The mayor didn't get specific, but he almost certainly was referring to the circus-like atmosphere surrounding the long-rumored-but-never-proven Manoogian Mansion party, and the ongoing civil case in federal court that is generating speculation that a Detroit stripper was killed in a drive-by shooting because of her connections to that soiree and Kilpatrick himself."
This mess goes deeper than Kilpatrick's affair with a former aide. Two former Detroit police officers claimed that they were fired for investigating claims that Kilpatrick used taxpayer-funded security to cover up his affair.

Simply put, do you think that perjury should yield a removal from office of an elected official? This could go back to the days of Bill Clinton as well, but I'm curious to hear your opinions on this.

Yes! I think people have a hard time trusting politicians. I think the only person who should mind about the affair is his wife, but when he is asked under oath he has an obligation to tell the truth. Hell, Martha Stewart went to jail for lying under oath, and she doesn't hold a public office. The people in charge of running a city or a state must appear to be trustworthy!

Re: Should Perjury equal removal from office?

I think it should, especially when you combine that with unethical behavior.

Of course that is not how the law works though. I suppose he will have to be impeached if he doesn't step down. As we all know, impeachment doesn't always work.

Re: Should Perjury equal removal from office?

I agree with both of you. It's a shame the Detroit mayor has been able to get away with the crap he has. As discussed in another thread, I don't think anyone is "Above the Law". If you commit the crime, you should be punished for it, just as anyone else in the same situation would be.

I'd be interested to hear an opposing viewpoint though...anyone?

Politics make people corrupt. When you reach a position of power all kinds of offers come your way. This is where special interest groups come in. If you need money to run your campaign, they will provide it. But when you get elected, they expect political decisions in their favor.

I am so sick of politics in America I could throw up. We don't have a voice anymore.

Re: Should Perjury equal removal from office?

yeah politicians got bought for blocking the Sirius/XM merger.

Jim Kramer was actually giving people's names out that took money for the politicians to be on Free Radio's side, and block it.

Some politicians got bought out for as little as $6,000

Back to the topic though, how could anyone take the guy serious if he was still in office?

Especially after several times in the past he's been so against hookers, and brothels.

He put away around 7 guys for several years after breaking up sex rings....

Re: Should Perjury equal removal from office?

No, it shouldn't. Just because somebody's personal decisions were aired out in public doesn't mean that it should cost them their job or profession. Imagine that one of your parent's bosses come to visit your house, then they look through the bedroom window and notice your parents enjoy a dominatrix sex-life. Should they get fired over that? Removed from their work position? No. It's absurd. As long as he isn't bringing it into his workplace or doing anything bad at his job such as scams, then let him stay in office.

Either way, let's hope Rage Against the Machine writes a song about this.
