Lets talk about the people behind the wars. Who do you feel is/was the greatest military strategist?

Hitler? Napolean? Robert Lee? Augustus?

One could make the case for a lot of people.

I say Robert E. Lee. He accomplished a lot considering he was outnumbered and had much less resources. Some say if the South would have won at Gettysburg the North was prepared to give the South their independence. That is how close the Confederacy was to winning the war.

Strategist? Hitler, Blitzkreig was a phenomenal tactic that was pretty effective.

Blitzkreig wasn't Hitler's idea at all it was a German military officer called Heinz Guderian who developed it.

This question is difficult to answer because the people who think of strategy are very rarely the people at th top.

If I had to choose, I'd go for MacArthur. Island hopping and the Korean incursion were great ideas and they actually were his.

Interesting choice. It seems like MacArthur suffered from the same problem as the person I'm going to choose... George McClellan.

McClellan was the North's general for the beginning part of the civil war. The strategy he came up with would have worked marvelously, if he were able to execute it. It played into both the psychological aspects, and physical aspects. After seeing death in the battle field he became gun shy and feared to put more troops out on the battlefield. It failed miserably.

Luckily my boy Ulysses had balls of steel, and just killed the South. I'm not sure if Jackson, Mississippi has recovered from the battle there yet!

If it wasn't for the death of Stonewall Jackson your boy Ulysses would have been in for a world of hurt and there would be a Confederate States of America right now.

Meh, Ulysses invented total warfare. Jackson's ethics, and lack of supply would have never stood a chance.

If you really feel that way though, it's definitely a good thing Stonewall died when he did. Otherwise you, and maybe even I, would be living like the boys of Africa.
