I am not going to deny that my sympathies lie with the South.

I think you are trivializing the shooting of General Jackson though. Robert E. Lee thought he was so important to the war that when he found out about General Jackson's injury he said:

Re: Greatest military strategist

No one's mentioned Hannibal Barca, the man who led his troops over the Alps to fight the Roman's on their own soil, winning three great victories over the Roman legions.
His greatest victory was the battle of Cannae, there his forces won an absolute victory over a Roman army twice the Size of the Carthiginaian forces.
And, I always thought lightening war was something the Germans took from Napoleon, and adapted for the modern age.

I'm allowing this because you added to the discussion but for the near future...

Please check dates on threads.

You bumped a thread that was from Feb.

Saying that they "adapted" it is pretty ambiguous. How intrusive could horses and muskets really be? Napoleon's mark on history has always been the size and relentlessness of his army, not particularly the offensive tactics they used.

Re: Greatest military strategist

Caesar or Alexander The Great.

As mentioned, Hitler most certainly was not. He surrounded himself with the greatest military minds in the world at that time, and then didn't listen to a damn thing any of them had to say. Had he listened to Rommel, D-Day would have been a slaughter and the Nazi invasion of Great Britian and then, subsequently, America, would been under way.

If you're going to go all Romance of the Three Kingdoms here then it's obviously Zhuge Liang.

Alexander's success was entirely due to the military structure and strategy that his father Philip II of Macedon introduced. I dig Alexander though.

We can't leave out Temujin/Genghis Khan.

(I really wish I had studied the civil war in more detail, but our professor was American and the dude really rushed through it, pretty much teaching the events leading up to it and the results.)
