Gun Control

After today's shooting at Northern Illinois, I'm really beginning to think that perhaps we make owning a gun, far too easy. I realize that shootings occur all over the world, but not nearly as often as they do in the United States. People seem to be lacking the responsibility needed when it comes to handling a gun, and further, a lack of compassion towards others, and are far too willing to take drastic action, like shooting up a school, or workplace.

Re: Gun Control

I believe I made a thread last semester about the case in D.C. because in one of my POL SCI courses I was a District Attorney in a mock trial. I looked hard and deep into gun laws, the 2nd amendment, etc.. etc.. and I just cannot foresee a day in this country where gun bans will be set in place. If they are, they'll be overturned.

We should make it harder to possess a gun, but it always goes back to the same thing.. If criminals want to get their hands on a gun, they will.

What about more security? bodies and detectors.

Re: Gun Control

You do raise a good point. We're guaranteed the ability to own guns by our own bill of rights, and this isn't a new issue at all, that our "founding fathers" were not aware of. However I can't help but wonder if they were so incensed with fear of being taken over, that they gave the every-day American too much control.

What kind of feasible way would there be to implement this, and when does that begin to infringe on our civil rights?

Re: Gun Control

It's not guns that are the problem, it's the idiots pulling the trigger. Making stricter laws or just plain banning guns wont do shit. Drugs are illegal and people obtain them so guns wont be any different. There will always be someone selling and always be someone willing to pay any price for it.

Re: Gun Control

I think there will be a time, we're getting close to it, where all places of work/schools will have metal detectors. I think after enough of these kinds of incidents the public will grow to accept it as a part of life. As for security, you're already paying someone to watch the building, why not give him more responsibility? Sure, there will be people that are pissed off, but how many more innocent lives have to be lost before we start correcting this problem?

You know what one big factor is in all of this? Americans are more stressed out than any other country. The government must be held accountable for sending some people off the edge (not giving those a pass), and domestic issues like jobs, mortgage rates, and health care need to be addressed but in the meantime we cannot stand by idle and allow these idiots to have sitting ducks available to them in any public building they enter.

Re: Gun Control

We don't need new laws, we just need to enforce the ones we have.

The Virginia Tech shooter should have never been allowed to legally buy the guns he used in the attack. He had been involuntarily admitted to a mental hopital in the past and that should have disqualified him from ever owning a gun. The report on that was never sent so his record showed up clean and he was able to purchase the guns.

Having said that, it is very easy to buy a gun illegally. If they make it more difficult to buy guns it will instantly create a black market for them compared to the alcohol black market during prohibition.

Hypocrisy at it's worst!

Re: Gun Control

You can buy a gun off the streets within 15 minutes. plus if you go to a dealer and want a gun, offer the right price there is no way they are not going to sell it to to you cuz you will give them more money than they will make in a month i bet. I don't see anyways of controlling it, it is already to late with how many guns are out on the streets so i think its to late they might as well just let it be.

Re: Gun Control

Dude. Musket balls and powder. No more commercially sold bullets. Let us kick it up old school, as the kids these days say.

In America we have the right to own a gun. Right or wrong, argue if you want, but that won't change. But we have a government to tell us what kinds of guns we can have (I do not need a gatling gun in my lawn) and when extenuating circumstances mean we cannot have a gun (Crazytown).

Screw the gun lobbies, the NRA, and the whiny anti-gun lobbies, and let's start making serious legislation and seize illegal guns, stop the commercial sales of certain types, and make it take just a bit of effort and screening to own one.
