Should there be restrictions on divorce?

Divorce has practically become a pandemic in the United States. I'm almost shocked when I hear a friend say that their parents are still together. Having at least a step-mom or step-dad seems like the norm, which is a bit pathetic. Should there be restrictions placed on divorced, such as a requirement that there's some sort of physical or verbal abuse? Should counseling be required before the divorce can be official? Or perhaps there should be a certification that someone has to get before getting married?

I don't really know how to "FIX" the problem, but it does seem to be having a dramatic effect on children. You can't say that the trauma it causes doesn't, or won't in the future.

Re: Should there be restrictions on divorce?

The issue is not divorce, it is the view our society has on marriage. Over the last 40 years the family insitution has been under attack in the U.S. Marriage is supposed to mean a life time committment, but it doesn't any more. People take it way too lightly.

The only way to solve it is to get back to traditional family values.

Re: Should there be restrictions on divorce?

It is hard to put restrictions on it, like verbal or physical abuse, it would give people in unhappy marriage a reason to abuse. My parents are still together and their marriage wasn't always roses, but they stuck it out. I think every marriage will have its tough times and alot of people just give up. As a newlywed (oct 7) I expect my marriage to last, but I expect to have some tough times. I also dated my wife for five years so I knew what I was getting into, which I'm sure will help, but we both take marriage seriously (ie no cheating) and we know it will take effort which we are both willing to give. I wonder if children who have divorced parents are more likely to get a divorce?

Re: Should there be restrictions on divorce?

What needs to happen is people need to get married when they have relized their dream, not get married early, have PROTECTED sex with lots of partners, not have kids until financially stable.

I do think that divorce is pretty easy now, and that people jump to early into it.

Traditional family values means, wife stay home with kids, husband go work. With housing cost and cost of living so high, it is near to impossible to do that. Most housholds need two incomes coming in just to make ends meet.

Instead of divorce restrictions, there should be pregancy restrictions. If you cannot afford a kid, you should not be having one.

I understand what your saying, but what do we do in that situation? Just have to be forced to give up your kid?

Re: Should there be restrictions on divorce?

Maybe limit them. My gf has a friend, not married, on welfare who has had three babies in three years. A drain on the ecomony. And you know the cycle will keep going. Her mom was the same way, and her kids will be too. And she says she is not done yet. Holy shit man.

It's people like that. Drian on the ecomony.

Re: Should there be restrictions on divorce?

By traditional family values I just meant that we should be teaching our children values that make them respect the sanctity of marriage.

Many things have contributed to the shape family values is today. The divorce revolution, sexual revolution, and contraceptive revolution, have detrimently affected traditional family values.

I don't think we will ever get that back.

People just does what feels good and don't think about the consequences. The consequences are record numbers of teen pregnancy, record numbers of pre-mariatal sex, record numbers of one parent families.....it just pretty much snowballs.

All of those things have impacted the institution of family, and our country, negatively.

It is going to take a generation to realize their mistakes, and teach their kids differently.

Not very likely.

Re: Should there be restrictions on divorce?

Pre-martial sex will never stop. Teaching kids about protection, really enforcing it, will be the only way to curb teen pregnancy.

Parents do need to play that part in their child's life. Not just turning a blind eye, and denying that it is not happening, because it is.

I do believe that the divorce rate is way too high. It makes me never want to get married without a pre-nup.
