Mandatory military service
What's your opinion on this? I know countries like Greece have this, and have been very successful with it.

Bill Richardson tonight brought up an issue, of having the government pay for 2 years worth of college, if the student is in the military service for 1 year. Would you be willing to risk your life so that the government will pay for 2 years of your college?

I would be happy to see it re-introduced, and would not have been displeased to have served myself.

We had National Service up to the end of 1960 over here and, many people that did serve, reflect fondly on those years, be it they learned a trade in that time that helped them in later life or indeed took the option to join up as a full time serviceman.

Basically, you served 18 months (it went up briefly to 2 years) at any stage between being 17 and 21.

I would not however have conscripts involved in full army military activity or serving overseas.

Not unless it is a scenario similar to the two World Wars in which Canada is directly involved (and kicking all kinds of ass may I add) and there was a shortage of troops. In that case not only would I support it but I would sign up immediatly.

Not when our guys are being sent to fight a pointless war.

I'd have no problem with mandatory military service if our CIC was a little more careful about starting wars just for the hell of it.

Would you have joined the military to fight the war in Afghanistan after we were attacked (ignoring all the conspiracy theories on that)?

I really feel that the mandatory military service could result in the return of nationalism, which would again "unite" the United States. As it seems now, we're a rather divided country.

The only way we can be united is if our country is attacked or if we are in a really serious war.

I don't want to be united with the leadership of our country currently. It's time for a drastic change in the way this country is ran.
