Vengeance: Night of Champions was only the beginning of the rivalry that heated up between ECW World Champion John Morrison and CM Punk.
On that night, Morrison shocked the Land of the Extreme and all of sports-entertainment by defeating Punk for the vacant ECW World Title – which many experts and fans believed the Straightedge Superstar would win. But Morrison, a new addition to ECW via the Supplemental Draft, didn’t hear the experts and the A-list era in ECW began.
On the surface, Morrison and Punk are polar opposites. Morrison, a Los Angeles resident, grew up in Hollywood, Calif., surrounded by wealth, decadence and paparazzi. He never wanted for anything, dined on the finest food, and trained with the finest gurus and athletes. Morrison has 4 percent body fat, has a 36-inch vertical leap and is chiseled out of stone. He represents a new kind of extreme in ECW – the extreme athlete.
Punk grew up in poor in Chicago. He doesn’t have Morrison’s six-pack abs, but his body is a canvas for an impressive array of tattoos. But he is a technician in the ring, well-versed in Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu. Punk has won a legion of fans with his never-say-die attitude and love of the “Straightedge Lifestyle” where he espouses the virtues of remaining drug and alcohol-free. Punk’s only addiction is competition.
Morrison believes he has something to prove at The Great American Bash. By beating Punk at The Bash, he believes he will prove that his victory over the Straightedge Superstar wasn’t a fluke. The ECW Champion will also silence naysayers who moan that he is not “ECW enough” to have the gold.
On the other hand, Punk believes his title match with Morrison is a must-win. Many critics and his fans thought he should have won the ECW World Title at Vengeance. If he falls short this time, he may not get another title opportunity for a long time, and some may have second thoughts about his promise as a future world champion.
The time is now for Morrison and Punk – two Superstars from opposite ends of the extreme spectrum united in their desire to hold the ECW World Title. And their war may determine the direction of the Land of the Extreme for some time to come.
