In January of this year, Batista reluctantly surrendered the World Heavyweight Championship due to injury. At the time, an emotional Animal made it clear that recapturing the gold would be his first and only goal following his return to the ring. Since Batista's return, he has received a handful of opportunities to take back the championship. However, controversial circumstances prevented him from achieving his goal.
On the November 3 edition of SmackDown, Batista made a deal with General Manager Theodore Long: protect King Booker in the days leading up to Cyber Sunday, and Long would owe him one. Batista lived up to his promise, and has asked the General Manager to pay up and grant him an opportunity to face King Booker for the World Heavyweight Championship at Survivor Series. Long obliged, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated championship matches in recent Survivor Series history.
Since capturing the coveted gold at The Great American Bash, King Booker has faced a number of imposing challengers.
